Let's get started with introducing the team! Quote ExileAcid: Hello, I'm John, aka ExileAcid Henrik: You guessed it, I'm Henrik Exile's the mastermind, designer and scripter. I'm more the guy who helps Exile stay focused on one task at a time, bug checks and provide general support to people using our mod. Ced: Awesome! I'm seeing more mods with community managers now to handle the feedback and support from the community. What brought you guys together to work on the mod? Quote Henrik: ARK brought us together <3 We started playing ARK together through/with mutual friends a year ago. Went on to run one server, then another and here we are today Ced: So ExileAcid, tell me what your inspiration for the mod is. What made you want to create it? Quote ExileAcid: We originally hosted a game server soon after this games release, back then there were not as many mods available for the game and we wanted our players to have a few little extra's, so back then i made a made could additional armor sets which proved quite popular. But that mod was a more just a bit of fun and a technical exercise. This one, Castles, Keeps and Forts i made though to try and bring a more personal experience for players, As building and customising bases is a huge part of the game I live in an area of Britain called North Wales and castles are a common site around here, From Conwy Castle to Caernarfon Castle they are huge are impressive structures that I thought would fit well in to arks world. Also as PVP is common part of the game, a castle is basically designed for maximum lethality against attackers, so there is plenty of designs to reference for cool features Ced: I've always thought castles would work well in ARK too. I've had some time to play the mod and I had a blast building and customizing castles with it. So I know that all of the 3D models are custom. Did you design those? Quote ExileAcid: I did! A lot of the archways, doors and the portcullis were based off of photographs of real world castles. The archway is based of the film location of Winterfell from game of thrones and the portcullis is referenced from the one used in Warwick castle, in fact the next portcullis will actually include a little door built in the same as Warwick's, so the entire portcullis would not need to be opened for a single player to pass through. Ced: Very cool that you are basing your designs off of real architecture. One of the other things I liked a lot is the ability to customize the material or even the mesh on the structures. Did you have prior experience 3d modeling or game development? Quote ExileAcid: I have 3d modelling for the past 6 years, but during that time I mainly worked on pre rendered artwork and "artist impression of" images. I had dabbled with other engines such as cryengine and unity but found UDK to be one of the more natural feeling for workflow, I'm still learning all the time as I use for that reason of it having such a good workflow. Ced: So Henrik, since you handle a lot of the community feedback, are you getting new requests for features? What has the community response been like? Quote Henrik: The community is awesome. We're getting a lot of positive feedback on the mod both written and from people posting pictures of their creations. That's what keeps us going! We are getting a lot of requests for new items to be added in and we've already fulfilled some of those wishes with the recent additions of a secret door, behe gates, one way stained glass windows and a prison set. We will keep on adding more content in future updates and will prioritize based on feedback. 3 Ced: That leads into my next question, do you want to share any ideas that you plan on releasing relatively soon? Quote ExileAcid: On the list next are different types of battlements, as we have found that the battlements really help alter the style of the entire castle, at the moment we have crenels and looped battlements, but we will be adding hoardings and my personal favourite machicolations. A drawbridge is also coming in a couple of weeks, and then we add some more lethal features used in castles, such as booby traps, of which there was a very wide variety used in real world castles, such as devices for dropping hot oil and rubble down onto attackers from walls and archways. We will also be having a decoration pack as an additional mod, once content for this mod is fully finished, we will able to bring out more mods using more architectural styles, at the moment the parts are medieval northern European. We will bring out more mod packs for Mediterranean, oriental and other historical styles Ced: I have to tell you, I'm really excited to see what's in store based off of what I've seen so far. Do you have any advice for people that want to get into 3D modeling or modding? Lot's of people are overwhelmed by the dev kit if you don't have prior game dev experience Quote ExileAcid: Don't be afraid of the user interface of 3D software when you first open it, It's natural to feel a bit overwhelmed at first by the amount of buttons and options. It's worth just watching guides on how to use and navigate before you get to complex. The steepest part of the learning curve is the start and after that it all starts to click. I would definitely anyone with an interest in it to try their hand. There is tons of help and guides online, and open source software such as blender means won't even need to spend a penny. 3 Ced: That's good information to people to know - that you can get involved without needing to spend a penny. The only thing you'll need to do is spend a little time getting familiar with the interfaces. It's been a blast talking with you guys. Are there any last words either of you would like to share? Quote ExileAcid: Thanks you to all the developers at wildcard and you Complex for taking an interest in the mod. The community support has been overwhelming and helping to keep is going even further with the mod. I hope everyone has fun making their castles, keeps and forts 2 That's it for this week's Crunch, thanks for tuning in guys!
