Jen
Hey Survivors! Welcome to the latest edition of the Community Crunch! Each week we run community contests Survivors can win lots of prizes! At the beginning of each week we post a thread here on survivetheark.com where you can try your hand at the competitions by sharing some of your creations with us! Let's get on with the contests. Community Contests! Player Procedurally Generated Maps! The Procedurally Generated Map system allows players to make their own ARK maps by determining a myriad of landscape options from the heights of mountains, depths of valleys, and the number of lakes, rivers or oceans, to the kinds of each biome they want, and more! Let's check out the entries for this weeks contest! This week's contest winner is... Kovko! Monkeypuzzle
I've been feeling for a while that the ARKitect contest could be improved if it were divided into categories, even if it meant the prizes were reduced. Building while actually playing the game in survival and building with admin commands are two extremely different modes. To a lesser degree the same could be said of modded vs vanilla. Rexanator
Yay another week of screenshots. (Sarcastic). Seriously, no one cares about that stuff. Give us some answers and information about what's going on. Not just screenshots. I play the game almost everyday. I know what it looks like. SatansPegasus
I gotta say i like the Venice shot but personally i wish i didnt see it as its too soon after my own project got corrupted which was going to be a Venice-esq build so note to self make back ups when using console. Tridentnova
When will Player-Dedicated Console servers get the ability to increase the limit of structures on rafts!? I see the game can take more structures. Some private computer servers have increased the limit already. An excuse may be because it is over-powered to have more structures, but if its a private server the host should be able to change it! It would open a wide array of new builds! B0BtasticB0B
This weeks pokemon snap winner is... I used to look forward to the crunch. Now it's just a circle jerk that destroys bandwidth. It would be interesting to know the stats on entries vs concurrent players on all platforms. Seems like the crunch only serves a small percentage of the player base. Wolf Angelus
9 hours ago, Deamonsatwar said: Speak for yourself. I actually love the contests and videos. I really want to know what mod WolfAngelus is using to make that Venice City. Bugger off with your negativity back to the steam forum with you. Buildings are the regular adobe pieces that are part of the core game, along with the floor, pillars were from a mod solely because of their fixed snap points. Fences = Fancy Fences, Roofs/canopy over windows/walls along water level = medieval structures, the rest of the decor = ecotrees/ecorpdecor, stairs + rails = extra ark2.0, and to bypass some collision for a few pieces = structures plus. It pretty much comes down to borrowing 2-3 bits from each of these. For those who want more building pieces in the core game, this is a good example of why Jeremy regularly supports letting a mod bring certain things in. They could add a few mods in completely but it will just never satisfy everyone and you may get lots of things you don't care about. If they did do this, it will require more RAM. It could require as much as 1GB per contents that a larger mod has. This means less accessibility, higher hardware requirements, and less personal customization choices. I am pretty positive that while the core game is a very complete experience, it was always intended for people to customize their experience with the sandbox provided. What I would support heavily put into the game is things like stackable foundations or less strict collision mechanics/removal of collision, say 60% of an object may collide so it wouldn't cause issues for pvp and be destructable still. Also, fixed snap points for things like pillars so they don't stick through flooring. 13 hours ago, Monkeypuzzle said: I've been feeling for a while that the ARKitect contest could be improved if it were divided into categories, even if it meant the prizes were reduced. Building while actually playing the game in survival and building with admin commands are two extremely different modes. To a lesser degree the same could be said of modded vs vanilla. Into their scoring they take into account how something was built, according to a message Jat wrote me once. I remember the first 2 things I ever built back in the first few months when the game came out was on servers and won with them. A more recent example was my ARK Police Department done on an official server that also won against modded/admin created content. I have also lost with admin content against things built on a live environment, so they definitely consider it. Based on observation, this is why they have ties/runner ups sometimes. I do think that when they know it was done in singleplayer, they expect a lot more in the first place. Another good point is that unless it was on an official server, it would be impossible to validate who didn't use admin and we can't expect people to submit hours of proof or that they didn't get help. Just for example purposes, the recent builds I did took over 30 hours each still. Arkvideo gets the same prize for far less time investment, so the prize amount itself is fine. The ARKitect contest is their most difficult and time consuming when it comes to time:prize ratio compared with other categories, any form of reduction wouldn't make sense since 30-100 hours on a single build is a massive amount of time when you consider pure building time. What I would suggest as an alternative that would be a compromise is change the PGM prize over to a category called "ARKitect Vanilla" as only 1-2 people enter this category and it really is just a game of alter a few numbers and make a few images. However, very few people actually also build that way, which would mean 1-2 entries a week only (without it being something that anyone could have just quickly built), so it could be easier to do as has always been done. Back when they did these on Steam, their posts would say that they don't care where or how it's built, they just wanna see the most awesome and creative things we can come up with (think of this like Minecraft creativity, but ARK version and the ability to build more realistic). Again though, they do take where/how it was built into scoring nowadays at least. I am pretty sure this component was designed to compete with Minecraft & other creative building simulator games by having people be able to do similar things here, while also be able to show cool things to the community and of course market their game by saying something like "hey, you can create stuff like this in ARK as well". Using my Titanboas & Ladders example, the creativity idea could have been done on a server and won quite possibly, even without the snakes (could just use an alternate small dino on the ramps). It all comes down to what, along with their other scoring factors. As for mods, they have been supporting and encouraging people to play around and customize ARK to their liking. Mods have made up a huge amount of the success it has and they just could never please everyone by adding more without having much higher RAM requirements, so they provide the base bits. You can make some pretty detailed bits though, again, see my ARK PD as an example. A mod would have allowed a few more elegant pieces and proper flowers, but no majorly different outcome. Hopefully some of that makes sense, I have been around and entering since a few months after the game opened, and pretty sure most of this is logical and accurate. Progress, issues, or maybe even ideas about how to deal with some of the glitches temporarily. I enjoy the game but have become increasingly frustrated with these forums because of lack of information. I'm sure if we took a real vote on how many people would prefer actual game content information over the numerous screen shots I think we would have a better understanding of what people really want. We most definitely need things like the contest to keep interest and pull more people in, but many people are becoming more and more frustrated with the lack of content provided in the weekly content update. Opinion stated no disrespect intended.

arksurvivorserver751
@WildcardJen Why can you put time into this but not into game breaking issues like people ddosing official servers that you are responsible for? If your servers have that poor of security implemented, I wonder what the security of your office is like? Would you guys finally deal with these issues if you felt the bite of the ddos? They need to split it up into two groups. Modded and Non-Modded, then split the prize pool in two. That way, console players can participate as well. Right now, console players are left out because modders will get 100% of the attention because they can make way more flashy builds than console players can.
