  1. Equus - i really like them, but i feel like there are aspects that don't work well together. you can ride them without a saddle, which is great, but taming one without carrots is tedious and takes forever. also, while your taming them you're riding around out of control with a higher likelihood of being attacked which would lower the taming effectiveness or kill the tame. i feel like you have to build crop plots and harvest carrots before you can attempt the tame. however, by that point you're probably past the point where Equus are useful. it feels like there is a very narrow window where Equus is a viable option to actually use them and be worth while over other options. like its stuck somewhere in between an early tame with lack of late game usefulness and a later game tame that is more unique. suggested solution - i think it needs to be decided if they are going to be an early tame that is somewhat easy for a new low level player, with appropriate usefulness at that level, or a later game tame. i think, to a certain point a little of both can be accomplished. their utility at present seems more inline with early game. i'd suggest simply speeding up the taming process so that it is possible to tame them relatively quickly using berries, and that carrots and kibble would be extremely quick. this would make it possible to utilize them in the early game. part 2 of the solution, i would suggest that a tek saddle be created for the Equus that give it tek wings and flight capability. the tek hover sail is an example of how it could visually look. the tek saddle in place of adding laser fire could increase the torpidity of kicks and reduce damage providing another effective KO taming method. if appropriate with the spending of element this could be another possibility of explosive KO for things like rock elementals, Titanasaur, ect.. if appropriate this could enhance the effectiveness of the lasso as well, although honestly i haven't used that much so i'm not certain how effective it is at this time to know whether it is an aspect that needs improving.
  2. A friend of mine had a coworker recently leave for a different company. Which means he is covering the position. The position has him on the road for several days every week and he’s only really home on the weekends. This basically means that his whole weekend is dealing with whatever household chores need to be done before he has to leave for work again the next week. He’s usually staying at hotels with super bad internet, so taking a laptop to play while on the road isn’t really a great option. The bright side is that they have hired a replacement for the coworker that left, but they don’t start until after the new year. he’s been a little depressed that so many people have been playing without him and he’s going to be left behind, or have nothing to do as we’ll have already done everything and he won’t be needed. Specifically, he likes to breed dinos and tame dinos, and make the kibble to do it effectively. It’s been a little bit of a setback for us, but we’ve specifically NOT started a garden for crop plots or started a kibble cooking location. we also have a few dinos that we haven’t started breeding, or just haven’t even gotten around to taming so that he has something to do when he joins us (he loves frogs and alligators). I even streamed for him and walked around our base and pointed out an area of our base and stated “this is where we were planning a crop plot garden and kibble cooking station, but we never really figured out how we wanted it to work”. He’s been coming up with ideas and he knows he’ll be available to start playing the week of Jan. 8th. I don’t know how this relates to your situation OP, but I hope your situation, like my friends, is temporary.
  3. i don't think it's related to an issue using a keyboard vs a controller. i have the game on both the ps5 and PC and i'm able to do it correctly on both. two issues i've found that will dump me off the Equus/Unicorn: if i have a dangerous dino nearby like an allo or a rex that is too close, then i go to feed the Equus it will rear up and run away preventing me from mounting. if i accidently tap the feed key when it doesn't need to be fed it acts as the mount dismount key. this can happen for a variety of reasons. i'm guessing this is your issue, and I'm guessing it is due to server/pc lag. timing feeding while you're mounted is sometimes tricky, and if there is any lag it may be throwing off your timing. a friend of mine just doesn't even try to tame Equus anymore because he ALWAYS double taps the feed key so he feeds then immediately gets dismounted.
  4. you don't NEED to build an egg farm in order to make kibble. having kibble is very nice but i consider it a luxury. it would help preserve taming effectiveness and speed up the taming process, but isn't really a requirement. i agree with the comments that Pipinghot made. being properly prepared for a project can make it feel substantially easier. i'd like to offer a suggestion of making a raft with a taming pen on it. this way it's portable and can be designed to trap and tame a multitude of different dinos. just make sure to keep it near shore in shallow water so it doesn't get destroyed by a Leedsikthus (spelling).
  5. I tamed them all the time on ASE and I've tamed a couple of equus, and 1 unicorn on ASA. the method has not changed as far as I know. if you're trying to feed and jumping off, or being thrown off, you are trying to feed too soon. you need to wait for the notification. there should be a flashing message in the lower right, and at the same time the equus will start kicking it's hind legs. sorry if this is info you already knew.
  6. two traps that i find useful for MANY different dinos: trap 1 - place 4-5 stone or metal gateways down in a row with just barely enough room between them for a person to squeeze between. then on the first and last one you install doors. leave one door open. shoot a dino and have it follow you in, you then squeeze out through the opening between gates and run back to close the door, the dino is now trapped inside. you can then also shoot through the gaps between the gates to KO and tame. if you want you can place a trap inside to help lock them down, but now that i know what i'm doing i don't find that necessary. this is how i trapped and tamed my theri's and argy's. step this up from regular gates to behemoth gates for rex's and yuti's. trap 2 - now that pillars can be turned sideways you can just carry a stack of pillars. place one or two vertically up from the ground depending on the size of the dino, until you have it at about hip height on the dino, then turn the pillars horizontally and make a floating box. 2*3 might be fine for a theri. leave one end open. place a trap in it and get the dino to follow you into it. aggressive dinos will chase you, passive dinos will wander in if you put honey on the ground for them. once they're in and caught in the trap place the last side of pillars vertically to finish the box. there is a nice video on youtube about this trap. if you add a roof cage over it of more pillars you can even trap fliers. argies will follow you in, quetz will also if you eat a rare flower to get them to agro you.
  7. anyone willing to hazard a guess? if their goal is to still have them all released before the end of 2024 then that is almost a new map every month. I'm thinking that is unrealistic. I'd guess there won't be any new maps for another month or so while they get the bugs worked out as smooth as they can before they start working on the next map. I'm wagering we won't see another map available until around March.
  8. i built an initial small fort on a raft and used it to travel all around the Island and up rivers as much as i could. in my opinion there are more areas where the water used to be deeper and it is so shallow now it is impassable via raft.
  9. i had a serious issue crashing repeatedly upon trying to launch into a server. it was suggested to me to open the nvidea control pannel and change the GPU setting from auto and manually select the GPU you wanted it to use. this has solved my issue and i have not had one crash since. thought i'd share my experience.
  10. i'm not having the same experience you are. i feel that there are a significant number of quality of life changes in ASA that are not in ASE. my favorite addition is the dino tracker ability to add points of interest and track tames. i use this to help locate dinos that have gone missing, a tribemate i'm trying to follow, and the direction back to my base or other location i've lft tames stored at. the taming icon for torpor and effectiveness is very nice as well.
  11. welp, my tribemate saw some pictures and watched a video and loved the look of a treehouse, so we've completely moved from our old location to a treehouse in the redwoods. it was a lot of work but sharing the effort we got it all done in one day. and the new tribe base looks much better than the old one.
  12. have you ever stopped to think for a moment that the reason the Devs are so quiet about stuff and just announce it at the last minute is BECAUSE of the toxicity that exists within the community? the attitude of the player base is so bad that if i were the devs i would just stop interreacting with them other than what was absolutely necessary. i don't believe that Wildcard is toxic. quiet and uninformative yes, but toxic no. and i believe that wildcard is quiet and uninformative because of how toxic the community is every time they do release information. TLDR - if you want better and more frequent information from the developers, be more supportive and less inflammatory.
  13. my tribe mate started a little kibble making kitchen and we made enough kibble to nicely tame a couple of high level Baryonix. we squeeked out an adventure to a water cave where we got a nice pump action shotgun BP. so i'm going to spend tonight gathering materials to craft a few. we have a nice community on our server and i may be able to trade crafted shotguns for other stuff i need. we'll see how it works.
  14. it's kind of interesting that you bring this up. i loved the old thread, and he was a big part of it. on the west coast towards the northern end, there is a little bit of water that creats a lake just inland at around Lat 40 / Lon 14. i've ended up building a base there. i was successful in taming an Anky and with all of the river rock that is right there i've been getting a little bit of metal without having to travel very far. just north of this area is all of the snow and ice, i made a trip up that way and tamed a mammoth. thatch and wood has been in abundance since then. one potential downside is that a lot of big nasties spawn not far away and sometimes they will travel all the way to my base. but the upside is that i've built a large 3x3 taming pen with a ramp and i can just run them in and tame almost right at my base. so far only low to mid level rexs, BUT i have had the luck to have two max level Allos in the area that i tamed. both are female one with what looks like great damage. i'm going to look for a male and see what i can do with Allos this time around. also, in the water not far from me there are lots of silica pearls, i've been harvesting them regularly which has provided me with a trade commodity. i've used them to trade for cementing paste and blue prints.
  15. pvp to me is equal opportunity with willing participants on both sides taking action against each other to see who comes out on top. i play several different pvp games. among them are: League of legends, Player Unknown Batlegrounds, Rainbow 6 Siege, Fortnight, along with a few others. pvp in ARK isn't pvp. in no other game would the actions taken in ARK be viewed as acceptable. imagine loading into a game of PUBG just to find out that you're already dead because someone killed you yesterday. or loading into a match of league of legends halfway through a match the other team started 5 minutes ago and your towers are already gone. in any situation in ark where you have the ability to affect others when they are not on and actively playing you are removing the aspect of willing participants. i have no problem with situations where a mega tribe picks on a beach bob. IF they're both online. sure it's unbalanced, but both are participating. heck the beach bob may not even be opposed, it might be the challenge he is looking for. because of these reasons i do not pvp in ARk, although the setting would be wonderful. here's my solution: take a map and separate it into a PVE area and a PVP area. make it so that certain materials and tames and BPs are only available within the PVP area. Metal ore for instance. this creates an experience where people can plan out what they want to take into pvp with them. they can choose to only take what they are willing to lose. the more you take with you the better your chances are. this reintroduces the willing participants aspect of play that is currently missing.
  16. Anky has a nice AoE tail swipe, but they're kind of slow and they can't jump. many caves have spots you have to jump. the lava cave certainly does. raptors, direwolves, thylas, baryonix, sabertooths all have jumps and can deal some damage to help you with cave creatures. heck even the terror bird can work ok. it really boils down to personal preference. you can take whatever you'd like as long as it will fit in the cave.
  17. ooof.. harsh beans man. i've been there. Ark is an unforgiving experience when attempting something for the first time or when unprepared. you have to be able to learn from your experience and use it to grow. try going back with a dino tame that fit in the cave and help you. i highly recommend one that can jump. i'm a big fan of direwolves, although this time around i'm using a baryonix as my cave dino. i would aim to tame something you have a good saddle for. try it that way and see if you have a better experience. good luck! keep your spirits up! it's the only way we survive!
  18. along the west coast, in the northern area just before you hit the snow and the icebergs, there is a small barren peninsula that almost always has a doed, and an anky or two. it's right near the water and you can pull your raft with a taming pen right up to the shore. be careful though, there are lots of angry boys there as well. you may have to clear out sabertooths, heyenadons, argy's, allos, and the occasional Rex. you could also tame any of those while there as well.
  19. i have noticed two specific glitches i get in game. i would think i'm not the only one, but where would i bring these up for Wildcard to review if it appears they are not already aware? 1st glitch. if mounted and you pull out a spyglass, if you dismount without putting the spyglass away (it might be just when i dismount off the left side of the dino) i almost always get a camera glitch where i'm stuck inside my body. 2nd glitch. if i hold R and access my pets inventory after when i leave that screen my mouse look no longer works. it seems that the only way to fix these is for me log out and reload the game. sidenote. i'm also getting an issue where occasionally when i hold E to bring up the radial menu on tames i cannot get my mouse to move in a direction to make a choice. sometimes it prevents a random direction, and sometime prevents all directions. does anyone know the cause of this?
  20. well, making the assumption that what they have told us isn't changing. they've stated that all content will be released in coordination with its original map release. and they've stated that all official maps will be released before the end of the year. so in theory we'll have cryopods before the end of the year. by the time that stryders and skiffs are in the game, we'll also have cryopods. so that point may be moot.
  21. i'm not trying to stoke the fires here, i'm truly curious when i ask this question. how would you possible gather evidence against someone who intentionally uses wild creatures to destroy a players base. or what evidence could you gather? lets say you even know it's going to happen because it has happened repeatedly before. you log out and the next day when you log in your tames are dead to a wild dino and your base is half destroyed. how would you prepare to gather evidence for the next time you log back in?
  22. ok, for the sake of discussion, with a 100 tame limit how much room does that leave for breeding. a line. lets use a tribe of 4 people for a test. each member is going to need a flier, each member is going to need a cave mount, and each member is going to need/want a shoulder pet. that's 12 dinos. the tribe is going to need a beaver or mammoth for harvesting wood, the tribe is going to get a doed, for harvesting stone, and an anky for harvesting metal. they'll also get a theri for harvesting as well. maybe i'm missing one, lets call that another 5 for harvesting. their also going to want an oviraptor to pick up eggs, and lets say another 5 dinos for egg production in addition to the other dinos they have. this is probably very low, but in theory they now have up to 20+ dinos making eggs, depending on gender. then you have your 20 dinos for a boss fight, lets say that those are not the same as any others currently used. all told they now have 43 dinos. we all know everyone has a special dino that they just have to tame even though it may not be needed, so lets round this up to 50 to cover things like that, or extra egg layers or whatever other incidentals i may be forgetting. that leaves us 50 other dinos that could be put towards breeding. at the bare minimum you'll have to keep a base male. you'll also have your current top stat for each of the stats that you care to mutate (possibly strength, weight, stam, health?). thats 5 you don't want to be dino capped, in case you need/want to tame something new or replace something else you have. so lets stay at a max of 98. so in this theoretical scenario, you could have your male breed with as many as 43ish females looking for a mutation. when those eggs hatch you'd only be able to claim 1 or two because you'd be at your limit, and then you'd need to kill off your old top stat male to make room for the new top stat male. it's not great but i guess it's workable. personally i don't think i could micro manage my tames to this level. i'm not going to start breeding to this extent until cryopods are available. i'm sure someone will disagree with the number of dinos i reserved, this was just me mumbling out a possibility. obviously everyone plays differently.
  23. it is going to be a challenge, but it probably a necessity from a server stability standpoint. we're just going to have to adjust until cryopods are reintroduced. on our server it has prompted a lot more trading and planning. the neighbor tribe down the shore from us has already stated he's breeding Rexs and we have a deal with them that they'll provide us with Rexs as needed. we're breeding Baryonix and we'll give share them as needed. we're looping in someone else who's going to breed Yutys, we're helping him to find a nice high level pair to start.
