  • Community Crunch 355: ARK Roadmap, EVO Event, and More!

     welcome_crunch2023-1.png

    Hey there Survivors!

We’re ready to reveal ARK's roadmap for the next year, covering various game-related initiatives, new platforms, and media.  The community’s support continues to be incredibly humbling and inspiring for the team, and that enthusiasm helps drive us toward creating the ultimate survival franchise. What we’ve planned has changed due to many shifting factors, but we believe it will ultimately provide the most fun and excitement for everyone who enjoys ARK.

We know you’re eager for the lowdown on our plans and more transparency regarding what’s behind the curtain, what’s evolved, and what has sprung anew, and we’re ready to share that with you… But before starting, we want you to meet our new friend!

    And now, for the roadmap…

    ark2heading.png

After careful consideration, we have decided to delay the sequel's launch to the end of 2024, when it will still launch exclusively on Xbox, Game Pass, and Windows distribution platforms (Steam/PC). We’ve put much thought into delaying ARK 2 for the betterment of the final product and the team's well-being. This news will be disappointing to many - we feel it too - but we’re confident this heavy decision is the right one.

So why the delay? Our goal is to make ARK 2 the best game it can be and provide a truly exceptional and rewarding experience for players. Unreal Engine 5 is incredibly new technology to us (and all developers), and we aim to use this cutting-edge tech to its fullest potential while creating a game with never-before-achieved scope at Studio Wildcard. As we learn more about the engine and develop the sequel, we have adapted our workflows and adjusted our pipelines to accommodate this new next-generation paradigm, and because of everything that involves, we need more time for development.

We sincerely apologize for this delay and genuinely appreciate your understanding. Your support and passion are vital to us, and we will continue to work intensively to deliver the ultimate next-gen dinosaur survival experience. With that in mind, we do not plan to showcase any gameplay/screenshots/videos of ARK 2 this year; however, we intend to keep you informed and engaged in the development process by regularly showcasing more ARK 2 assets in the months ahead, leading to our gameplay reveal next year.

But! Our desire to push the boundaries of what ARK 2 is on a next-generation platform has led us to the decision to create an intermediary Unreal Engine 5 ARK product utilizing some of the new technology we are building, allowing us to further our mastery of the new engine and ultimately battle-test some of our riskier technical advancements. We’ll gain a deep understanding of how well the rendering and lighting techniques work on console, what performance will be like, whether we can optimize and deliver interactive water and foliage on a widescale basis, and much more. We will deliver cross-platform modding, cross-platform multiplayer & a new account system, informing us about other changes we should consider for ARK 2. Due to the scope of all the technical and QOL changes required for such a next-gen experience, it is not feasible to make this new version of ARK backward compatible, which led us to conclude that this would need to be a separate product.

We also recognize that ARK 2 has some pretty significant design changes from the original game, which may not make it as appealing to everyone (looking at you, Souls-like combat, primitive-only weaponry, and strict third-person mechanics – and an overall “very serious” tone), which is why we feel it is essential to provide players with a fully next-gen version of the original experience to ensure that fans can continue to enjoy the ARK they know for years to come.

We’re thrilled to share this new ARK journey with you this year -- bringing players from PC, Xbox, and PlayStation together in a next-generation version of the game you love, topped off with revolutionary cross-platform modding.

ARK: Survival Ascended is a next-generation remaster of our beloved ARK: Survival Evolved, harnessing the power of Unreal Engine 5. It will be released on Xbox Series S/X, PC (Windows/Steam), and PlayStation 5 by the end of August 2023. The base game will include The Island, SOTF, and all the “Non-Canon” DLC maps (which will be added to ASA over time).

Xbox Series S/X and PC players will only be able to get it via an ultimate-value bundle known as the ARK Respawned Bundle. This bundle includes ownership of both ARK: Survival Ascended AND ARK 2 and will be priced at $49.99. This bundle will be available to purchase from the end of August for up to 1 year (after which ARK: Survival Ascended and ARK 2 will be sold separately). Additionally, the bundle will provide players access to an exclusive 1-month closed-beta to ARK 2 in 2024 before the rest of the general public can play ARK 2.

PlayStation 5 users will be able to get their hands on ARK: Survival Ascended as a standalone next-gen game at launch in August 2023 for $39.99.

All the expansion packs will be sold separately on all platforms:

    • $19.99 for Explorer’s Pass, which includes Scorched Earth, Aberration (Q4 2023), and Extinction (Q1 2024).
    • $19.99 for Genesis Pass, which includes Genesis Part 1 (Q1 2024) and Genesis Part 2 (Q2 2024).

At ARK: Survival Ascended’s launch, players will have access to The Island, Scorched Earth, and the new revamped game mode, Survival of the Fittest.

In addition to many other new features, ARK: Survival Ascended will feature the following improvements and enhancements:

    • Unreal Engine 5 Overhaul with Nanite, Lumen and RTXDI
    • Dynamic Water
    • Interactive Foliage
    • Unreal Engine 5 performance gains: instanced-rendering (large-bases etc.), threaded server networking, and native physics engine
    • Cross-platform Multiplayer
      • This includes cross-platform accounts and cross-progression, cross-voice chat & friends, etc. No matter what platform you start playing on, you can access your account, character, dinos, and items on a different platform for the ultimate cross-platform experience.
    • Cross-platform Modding
      • We recognize the power of giving players the tools and capability to define their survival experience, so we want to take cross-platform one step further by working with  Overwolf  to introduce an industry-first cross-platform modding experience where mods created on PC are delivered directly to end-users’ consoles from a custom modding backend.
      • The modding capability will include FULL blueprinting support ;), stacked mods, and maps. Everything that is currently possible on the Steam version of ARK: Survival Evolved and more will be possible on the new system and be available for end-users to play on consoles in all modes.
      • Premium Mods: Reviewed by Overwolf and Wildcard for quality control and value, Mod authors will optionally be able to specify price points for their Mods (with 50% of the price point going to the Mod author). This is necessary to pay for the custom infrastructure required for Overwolf to support, administrate, and deliver Mods to the console.
      • We plan on streamlining the process of upgrading legacy ARK: Survival Evolved mods to the next-generation platform. We plan to reach out to current/former sponsored modders in preparation for the launch of ASA with the tools they need to get their mods ready before the launch.
    • Cross-platform Anti-Cheat
    • Survival of the Fittest
      • SOTF will be integrated into the main product as a new fully-supported game mode. It will have a dedicated team that will continue to work on more gameplay changes, mechanical improvements, quality of life, maps, and balance adjustments. The initial mode will be revamped with an exclusive ARK: Survival Ascended update, including:
        • Upgraded to Unreal Engine 5 with complete cross-platform and cross-modding support (the SOTF UE5 source content will be released for modders to utilize as they wish within ASA)
        • Scorched Earth SOTF Map
        • Matchmaking queue
        • Character and Creature customization with cosmetics
        • Local Lobby where you can group up with your friends, configure the look of your survivor and dinos, and queue up for lobbies together
        • Lots of bug-fixes and balance and functionality improvements
    • Art Assets are being upgraded throughout the entire game
    • Newly-designed holiday events take advantage of the next-gen pipeline, released as mods, so they’re always available to play!
    • New content, QOL improvements, balance, and gameplay changes, including but not limited to:
      • Updated mini-map (pan, zoom, pings, etc – similar to the SOTF mini-map)
      • New structures (display cases, smaller TEK Teleporters) & building QOL improvements (snap fixes, increased foundation support, foundation height adjustments, and more)
      • Queueing System
      • New third-person camera (with the option to opt out)
      • Directional Sprinting and Walking
      • Ping system
      • Gamepad cursor
      • Chibi Slot and Skins Tab
      • Balance passes (e.g. Cave Entrances, MEKs, Aberration Creatures, more breedable creatures, etc)
      • …and more! (seriously, a lot more, this list isn’t exhaustive, but it’ll get super long if we list everything, and there’s more we’ll decide to do between now and launch too)

    LiveOperationssubheading.png

We understand there will be questions regarding LiveOps for the product, so we’ll review some key areas now.

    • Final Content Update: In June for ARK’s 8th Anniversary, we’ll release ARK: Survival Evolved’s final content update, which includes the fan-voted Rhyniognatha!
    • Cross-platform: It’s important to note that ARK: Survival Evolved (ARK:SE) and ARK: Survival Ascended (ASA) will coexist but will not support crossplay between the two games. ASA will have undergone profound functional changes which prevent it from being compatible with the previous game.
    • Holiday Events: We plan to develop and release ASA-exclusive holiday content that takes advantage of the next-gen pipeline released in mods, so they’re always available to play!
    • Official Servers: With the launch of ASA at the end of August, we will be taking down all Official Servers on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC for ARK: Survival Evolved – at that time, the final save-datas from the ARK: Survival Evolved Official Servers will be uploaded for players to re-host on their own servers or play in singleplayer/non-dedi, as well as slightly earlier snapshots. You will still be able to play on single-player, non-dedicated, player-dedicated, and unofficial servers. ARK: Survival Ascended will have its own fully supported Official Network for all platforms.
    • Feature Sunset: With the launch of ASA, we will be ending official support for Primitive+, Split Screen, and Procedurally Generated Maps. These aspects of the game will not be ported to the new Unreal Engine 5 version.
    • We will look into releasing the source files for Primitive+ for those that wish to repurpose aspects of it for mods.
    • ARK: Survival Ascended Updates: The remaster will have regular updates to resolve bugs, introduce new content, balance changes, and quality-of-life improvements for years to come.
    • ARK: Survival Evolved Updates: will be limited to crashes and critical bug fixes.

    paidexpansionheading.png

We plan to release a new canonical-story expansion pack for ARK: Survival Ascended that will be available in Q4 2023. This DLC will feature four new creatures, which we’ll share more details about later this year!

    ARK_Ultimate_Bundle_2560x1440_V05.jpg

ARK: Ultimate Survivor Edition has been off to a great start on Nintendo Switch. The insightful crew at Digital Foundry called it "one of the most radical improvements in game quality (they've) ever seen."

So far, we've launched Scorched Earth, Aberration, and Ragnarok, with Extinction coming on April 11th. Our current estimated timeline for the rest of our significant releases is as follows:

    • April 2023 - Extinction
    • May 2023 - Small Tribes servers
    • June 2023 - Genesis Part 1
    • October 2023 - Genesis Part 2
    • Winter 2023 into 2024 - Remaining community maps

Spring has been an exciting time on the platform, with the release of the Carcharodontosaurus now roaming around The Island and Ragnarok. Eggcellent Adventure begins on April 3rd, bringing this full event to players on Nintendo Switch for the first time. Lest we forget ARK: Dinosaur Discovery, which also saw a content update to v1.5, recently adding a full-featured in-game map and numerous gameplay improvements. As a reminder, ARK: Dinosaur Discovery is a separate download available for FREE to all digital owners of ARK on Nintendo Switch.

Finally, we are happy to welcome a swath of new players from Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan & South Korea. Both titles are now available locally on Nintendo Switch in those regions from our partners at Spike Chunsoft.

    arkmobilerevamp.png

We have some important news for Mobile Survivors! At the year's end, we anticipate a relaunch of ARK: Mobile as a completely revamped product. It will be based on a graphically improved version of the Switch codebase due to the increased power generally available with mobile devices and include new Switch features and content and mobile-specific changes. We plan to release all the expansion packs and non-cannon maps over time into this revamped version, and from that point onwards, ARK: Mobile will have its product lifecycle and roadmap.

ARK: The Animated Series has completed the animation and cast recordings of all its 14 initial episodes, which are currently in post-production (VFX, sound mix, etc.). We're delighted with how the show turned out -- it's an epic melodramatic love letter to dinosaurs, fantasy/sci-fi, and of course ARK itself -- though we have not placed it yet with any platform, hence the lack of news in that area. So as soon as there's more to report, we will let you know!

Thank you everyone for reading through this substantial write-up, and stay tuned for more information on the ARK: Survival Ascended in the months ahead toward its August launch!

Radio silence about the game from all devs and community managers for about a week (some, almost 2 weeks).

And absolutely nothing said about this announcement since it was posted.

It seems as though these decisions were made by Snail and even the devs aren’t on board.

this is so much more than just a delay--- closing ark official for a new improved version they're charging us for.

we all expected ark 2 delay it's WC. But the rest is BS.

Man, wildcard really just sat back and assumed everyone on official was a mindless consumer who'd shell out money for a product they already own but prettier and thank them for deleting nearly a decade of hard work. You guys vastly, and I do mean VASTLY overestimate the value of this game if you think that'll fly for all but the most diehard braindead ark stans. What next, rhyniognatha will be exclusive to ASA?

The funny thing is that everyone who plays official plays on lowest settings possible for less lag we don't care about how good the dinos looks

The same holding company of publisher that decided to quit mobile version support that alone worth 4 to 6 millions income per year (hard to estimate precise, but you can get an idea between average license solds of PC, average license prices difference and remove all this from 2021 income) despite all the issues and the non-existent support? If they cared about server costs they would have reviewed them every year to see what to cut and what to keep, how to better setup them (ie server settings) to allow more people in the same server playing in a better way and so requiring less servers... The same company that made in 2022 additional 4 millions of administrative costs compared to 2021? The same holding parent publisher company that invests less in research&development (aka ark2 development and switch porting)  than this additional administrative costs? 3ml in development vs 22.3 (16.4 in 2021) millions in administration? If they cared about income they would have made different choices. https://www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2023/03/29/2637127/0/en/Snail-Inc-Reports-Fourth-Quarter-Full-Year-2022-Financial-Results.html

Only been playing this since late 2019, but I enjoyed every map I played on official (legacy), mostly for the people I played with, and got to know a little, sharing stuff as time went on etc.

Im very disappointed by the recent decisions that have been given to us via this roadmap. for players that come from official servers - and I guess thats more or less the majority of the ark gaming community - this feels like being kicked out of the door and left in the cold

without wanting to go into detail (thats been done by all the posts already typed down in this thread), I just feel as if the people that are in charge of the making of decisions, have no idea about who the gaming community really is, and what they have evolved to in a long peroid of gaming together
still, I cant help but feel the urgent need to post my thoughts here aswell, maybe to give this reflection by the community a very tiny bit more weight by just doing so

for the moment I believe neither saturday nor sunday are office times for anybody in charge to respond to all those posts.. but I am hoping that they will do so during the next working week, even though Im not holding my breath for it

    good luck ya'll

So I have been contemplating upgrading from a PS5 to a PC for a while now and was wondering if anyone would know about what the Spec requirements might be for Ark: Survival Ascended? I figure this thread would be the place to have those.

at least an RTX 2060 according to Epic to run decently basic rendering features of UE5. UE5 can run also in DX11 mode but it is considered deprecated and will be tossed off a day, plus it doesn't run on lumen and other stuff due nanite and dynamic virtual shadows compatibility and performance (since 5.1). The last 5.2 cool preview, that was still far from being rock solid performance, was running with an expensive RTX 4090. I don't expect ARK2 to be more optimized than basic UE5 rendering at all (at least using same rendering features).

edit: here are hardware and software requirements for UE 5.1 and related features https://docs.unrealengine.com/5.1/en-US/hardware-and-software-specifications-for-unreal-engine/

edit2: in 5.1 nanite isn't supported anymore in DX11 mode at all.

    https://docs.unrealengine.com/5.1/en-US/unreal-engine-5.1-release-notes/

    Quote
    • Fully removed Nanite and Virtual Shadow Map SM5 vendor extension, lockbuffer hack, and DX11 support from UE5

    Dear Ark Development Team,

I was deeply disappointed to hear the recent announcement that you will be shutting down all official servers for Ark: Survival Evolved. As someone who has invested over 1000 hours into the game, I cannot express how devastating this news is for me and many other players.

I understand that managing servers can be expensive and time-consuming, but this decision feels like a betrayal to your loyal player base. Many of us have spent countless hours building our bases, taming our dinosaurs, and exploring the vast world of Ark. To have all of that effort and time go to waste is truly disheartening.

As someone who earns around 20 euros per hour, I can't help but feel like this decision is a massive waste of time and money. Assuming the average player earns around 15 euros per hour, the collective hours spent playing Ark likely amounts to millions of euros. To shut down all official servers and erase all of that progress and investment is simply unacceptable.

I urge you to reconsider this decision and find a way to keep the official servers running for your dedicated player base. If this decision stands, I fear it will irreparably damage the trust and loyalty of many Ark players.

Ark Ascended - Why will it cost money for this previously stated "free upgrade"?

At the end of 2022, Snail Inc launched on the NASDAQ. In their registration statement, the first risk factor listed was:

Fast forward six months, and after an initial starting price of $3.00, SNAL currently sits at $1.33.

Additionally, Snail Inc. recently released their Fourth Quarter & Full Year 2022 Financial Results, a key highlight being:

While the initial plan by Wildcard may have been to offer the upgrade free, decreasing revenues from the self-proclaimed 'dependent franchise' and a prolonged delay before Ark 2 hits the shelves (see you in 2025) may have resulted in some prompting (or pushing) from Snail Inc to monetise the upgrade.

The cash grab might not directly be Wildcard's fault, but it's what happens when a company becomes a subsidiary to another who doesn't neccessarily share their values.

Another amusing risk factor as part of the registration statement:

Good luck with making those decisions Studio Wildcard! Full statement from the SEC website can be found here "https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1886894/000110465922100894/tm2128835-10_drsa.htm#tSUM" and Forth Quarter Financial Results here "https://www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2023/03/29/2637127/0/en/Snail-Inc-Reports-Fourth-Quarter-Full-Year-2022-Financial-Results.html"

    Unreal Engine 5

So ARK 2 is significantly delayed due to complexities of the UE5 engine, and "new technologies". The main question i have is therefore, why is Ark Ascended going to be ready in a mere four months?  Or will it be a buggy, laggy, unmitigated disaster, and essentially a paid test server for Ark 2?

Disclaimer - Everything above is speculation on my part, and has potentially no basis in truth or fact.

I'm not sure how to like but this was probaby the best post on here so far as it explains so much about the decision to charge again and likely other monetary decisions in the future as money after all comes first, profit for the shareholders is a must no matter the punishment on the payerbase! Thanks so much for this info, its just a shame it will be ignored by so many!

So.. if you're shutting down the servers we have now when Ascended comes out.. Doesn't that mean you plan on using these same poopball servers for your "New Game".

I really feel like these guys are trying to run us all off and burn the game to the ground at this point.

For over two months ArkSE was being sold along with the suggestion that a remaster would be included. Does this amount to a case of fraud?

Ya I read all their quarterly reports. Some interesting finds in there sometimes.

That's a lot of anger for someone with such a pathetically poor understanding of the issue. It sounds like you're  mostly just mad at alpha tribes wiping you and projecting the idea that everyone upset is part of that alpha group rather than people that hate the fact that 7 years (if you can't into math that's roughly 2,556 days, 61, 349 hours, or 4,504,800  minutes including a leap year) of work will go down the drain with no way to fight it while being told to re-purchase the product they already own to start from zero.

So much irony in this post I'm not sure where to begin!

Ok first I agree with everyone saying the decision to charge money again stinks, its all wrong but a post from another user explains why the decision has been made to rip the player base off again. Its been done by so many gaming companies in the past and people will still mindlessly pay again and again, theres a reason the term cashcow came about! WC have proven time and time again they are no different, they know there are far to many people willing to pay money again no matter how much they are mugged off, its why there are so many scammers out there! Charging whats basically full price and then charging extra for the DLC's is why NO ONE SHOULD BUY IT AGAIN! PLEASE DO NOT BUY IT! If you do then you have no right to complain as you are part of the reason they do this!

Ok on to your point about "Alphas" & "Anger" Frustration 100% but not anger and if you cannot see why then it shows your ignorance so I'll explain it a bit better just for you!

A solo, duo or small tribe joins an official server which seemingly looks low to no population only to be wiped either within hours or maybe if lucky a few weeks by an alpha or mega with nothing better to do or just scared that this small tribe will wipe their vast base and highly bred dinos if given longer than an hour to build! THIS HAPPENS ALL THE TIME, there is so much evidence of this it should be clear to anyone! What this causes is the player base to diminish each time this happens due to players realising that its pointless to even attempt to build on official anymore, this causes the servers to slowly die, WC see that the servers are slowly dieing which gives them a part excuse to be able to wipe servers due to no one using them. What part of this you dont understand is beyond me, its literally self defeating! It also proves the ignorance of the playerbase on Ark PVP now.

PVP as explained so many times by some far better than me does NOT mean kill everyone and everything. You build a community to keep servers alive. Imagine if players were allowed to build up and more people joined, more servers fill back due to more players coming back, it makes it harder for WC to wipe those servers for good, the exact opposite is happening daily so its obviously part fault of idiot big tribes that decisions like wiping are made. "Empty servers" Its why Ark when first released was so good, people understood to a point that having high pop servers worked.

Ok now some of you are anoyed that you will loose all those hours you put into breeding etc, I have one question:- How long do you expect WC to keep servers alive? Forever? it was always going to come to an end but I admit the time given is disgusting! Some of you also think that you should be allowed to take all that work over to ASA! All of the above shows why that would be a major mistake, bring out an updated Ark just for cretins to kill servers by not allowing anyone to build on them, yea no thanks!

The only way I can see for the above to happen is to cluster the most populated servers, say anything with an average of 10 players over the previous month (there are far to many empty maps or low populated ones to port them all) and then port them over but not allow them to in anyway affect new servers, make them legacy if you will! You get to keep your hard work for longer and new updated graphics but are not given the opportunity to crossover any characters or tames to new servers. This keeps the old player base happy and the new player base atleast get a chance to build up without dipsticks with level 450 dinos wiping their wooden bases!

Money decision WRONG on all accounts!
Decision to wipe in part correct but in part wrong for obvious reason but hey its only a game and it doesn't matter! Isn't that true BSM! You know who you are 😁

So no not anger but frustration! Reasons why above :)

It doesn't mean that at all. They didn't say they are repurposing servers for the new game. They just said they are shutting down the current servers. If you take that literally, it means they are not re-using the same servers.

They aren't quitting mobile. They are bringing out a new version of the mobile game.

Haha ffs I doubt the semantics of my wording would have any bearing. However, an announcement by a 'lead designer/programmer & cocreative director of ARK: Survival Evolved, cofounder StudioWildcard' could be very relevant.

please give love to controller UI design to improve a lot of QOL

like tools with radial menu or<in> any shortcut item in inventory with less micro management

example with good design + ui for inventory management in the game you can look into it
    monster hunter world + rise
    red dead redemption 2
no man sky for easier inventory management in grid [ like you're planing controller gamepad cursor ]

    thank you
