Suggestion

This is another one of my favorite submissions done by someone else. Sovira made the dossier themselves and came up with the original submission. If they do post I would like this post to be subbed off of their post.

Sovira:Hello allies of the Ark! My submission here is a jumping spider species that is said to have lived once between 23 and 15 million years ago, and the excitement of that discovery led to its last name, eureka! I genuinely hope to see Maevia eureka find its way to Ark some day, any support for it is infinitely appreciated, please take a moment to toss it a vote if you would like to see it around in Ark! (This art is from Sovira)

These are my thoughts on how Maevia eureka could fit into the world we play in, in a way that reflects real life jumping spiders combined with genetic modifications from other spiders, and how they might fit into Ark in a fun and meaningful way that reflects other creatures of Ark and how important each and every one of these creatures is. I felt that, as Maevia is more of a taming companion, this gives us a different way to tame creatures using a non-harmful method! As it is on just about any map, there are many risks you take while engaging with your targets due to the fact that the Ark can be quite chaotic so having to be weary of your surroundings at all times is one thing, but the larger the creature, the weaker the bola... You may find yourself having to maneuver around an area and keep your targets attention while allowing for your jumper to gather enough venom to ensnare it once again.

Habitat - This is a creature that is capable of being added to any map in the game due to its likeliness of living in caves, but also as jumping spiders can be found in so many different environments, there particularly are no limits to where they could be found!

Ability - Prey Lure
You're out roaming around on your two equus when one of them begins to pick up an irresistible scent coming from a nearby cave wall. Your equus is nibbling on a suspended droplet when you notice the faint glinting coming off the web it's attached to, within an instant a jumper has lunged at your equus covering it with its bola and is quickly wrapping it up in its webbing, but in order to free your companion you need to tear at the webbing, as a few good kicks will send that jumper scurrying up the wall to hide!
Ability - Tranq Bola
The thought is that jumpers could take the droplets they store and work them into their webbing to create venom-coated webs that could be thrown like a bola. The webs would have a tranquilizing effect whenever touched, thus causing their target to build up torpor and eventually go unconscious.
Ability - Latching
As a jumping spider, they have outstanding agility and the ability to crawl on walls, but at a more rapid pace, maybe even with the cost of stamina drain for balance! An optional thing I had given thought to was the ability to fully latch onto smaller prey in order to accurately cover the target with their readied net.
Ability - Locking On
This is the single feature that would make this creature so invaluable, and even possibly make it require a very difficult feat for taming it due to that power, as with the spiders extreme accuracy, it could 'lock onto' a target, and the net cast would be immediate, rendering even jumping managarmrs unable to jump, though I do feel that stamina might be a way to balance this out!
Trait - Scary Face
This spider was designed in thought with evolving to be able to terrify larger than normal predators, making it an incredibly useful tame for bases, keeping your creatures better protected when having to move them around the map, I imagined it could come with an extra ability to raise its back legs with its abdomen to stay in this stance on the ground, or you could enable an option within the radial menu allowing it to find and hang down from a nearby pole, perhaps even a new item for the spiders and flyers alike, akin to a perch?
Trait/Ability - Dance!
Jumping spiders in the real world have very little differentiation on sizes between male and female. The idea was that the males would be the ones that allow you to get close enough to tame them, while females will try to kill you if you do this, and when you find a male companion, he has the ability to dance when you find a female, you can engage in this dance, maybe a left/right/up/down type of button combination you have to get right in order for her to find your boy worthy of her prescence, and in the meantime you can shower her with presents of food until she wants your boy to dance for her again, gradually gaining her trust. When a movement is not corrected quickly enough, she would become hostile and attack, and you may have to wait for her to cool off before you can attempt this ritual again!

Dossier!
If there's one thing I can say about Maevia eureka, you do not want to be caught in its sights! I once witnessed a jumper locking onto its prey with the most incredible accuracy, lunging at it with lightning speed and within the blink of an eye, its prey was being saved as a snack for later.
They seem to have the genes of a few other spiders like that of the ogre spider, as it can cast a gathering of its webbing along with a little dab of the venom droplet it keeps stored on its head, working that into its web to create paralytic bolas that seem to render its prey unconscious. I have reason to believe the hairs that grow on its back legs came from the peacock spider, but due to its need for protection, it also uses these 'feathers' as a menacing face that can scare off large predators, I've seen some tribes set up posts that they can hang from around the fronts of their bases.
I will say one thing is for certain, though they are nearly the size of a dire bear, they are quite the cuties, especially for being a spider, there is a certain intelligence you can see when you look into their eyes, I just can't place it, but they truly make remarkable companions with the ability to rapidly scale walls, caves, cliffsides and such. By no means are they a beast of burden, however they make up for this with their abilities to constrict or assassinate their targets. Maevia eureka can take down much larger prey with its torpor inducing bola, the net cast, and this makes them remarkable allies for taming other creatures. Though I haven't been able to get close enough to befriend one of the females, the males don't seem to mind me being in a remote vicinity with them as much

Still think this guy should be a shoulder pet. But that's just me. ^^

Don't worry, not much of the suggestions we do submit will go to finals, the best you can do is comment what you do think it should be like and how you think it would fit really well into Ragnarok! There were many last time suggesting it be like a black widow rather than a jumping spider in the sexual dimorphism part, where the male would be tiny enough to be a shoulder buddy and the female very large, so there are definitely others that would love that being suggested too!

I definitely agree it certainly fits there, however it still could potentially lose on Aberration due to several already laid out designs for dinos over there, so it's more than fair for it to be submitted to other maps, as even if it were to win it could still be placed into cave systems throughout most of the maps and even on aberration, and could even by chance be selected as a secondary win rather than a primary for the map, being that it does apply to all the maps rather than just one.

Loved this idea from the last submission. I do agree with it needing every chance it can get. I feel same about bastion beetle. However I feel like this would be absolutely perfect for aberration. I will be putting some new idea’s myself but if this doesn’t win this time  I would definitely vote for it then

Seems I can't find my suggestion for this creature from the last submission.

I will take time to dig into my memory and add it again.

I'm so sorry, I went to apply those to the original submission from before the last creature vote event, and realized they were wiped out of the finalists discussion! :(

I know I know if it were up to me I would include ALL THE CREATURES proposed in the competition, since if there is something scarce in ark a, in my opinion, it is the lack of biodiversity. Only before having another giant insect I would wait...in the meantime, take my vote

My suggestion for this spider.

Global : The spider will be early-mid game creature that focus on taming (PvE)/disable (PvP). The spider can be used in late game due to ability power scaling on some stats. The suggestion features a shoulder-pet male and interactive taming/breeding with a dance.

Spider description :

Female

  1. big and rideable
  2. can walk on every surface, can't jump except with her abilities
  3. Abilities
    1. Cast net with lock on : the spider can jump on a single creature (on land or flying) and trap the creature in a net. The creature will be completely disabled (can't move nor attack nor use abilities) as long as the female keep the net. To keep the net, the female will consume food over time and not stamina. The speed stat, instead of increasing movement speed, will increase the max drag weight of the creature that can be trapped. The ability doesn't do any damage and have a long cooldown (around 1 min).
    2. Female dance : The female can perform a dance that scares small to medium creatures.
    3. The female can't use the venom ability and can't induce torpor in any way.
  4. Wild behavior
    1. The female will be aggressive toward unconscious creatures only.
    2. If attacked, the female will flee unless there is at least one male spider around. When the female flees, she will use her dance to scare the attackers if possible. When the female attacks a creature, she will use her cast net ability on the attackers.
  5. Tamed behavior
    1. The cast net ability can be used only when rided. She will be able to lock on targets in range (~30-50 m).
    2. The dance ability can be used when rided to benefit of the scare effect. The dance ability can be activated without a rider but the dance will not have the scare effect. The dance without a rider will be purely for the fun.

Male

  1. small and shoulder-pet
  2. can walk on every surface, can't jump except with his abilities
  3. Abilities
    1. Venom : the spider can jump on a creature and inflict torpor. The ability will do very few damage except if used against an unconscious creature. The melee stat will increase the torpor inflicted by the ability. The ability have a long cooldown.
    2. Male dance : the male can dance to tame a female spider or for the mating.
    3. The male can't use the cast net ability.
  4. Wild behavior
    1. The male will be aggressive toward unconscious creatures and small to medium creature (human at max). The males will also be aggressive if a female spider around is attacked.
    2. If attacked, the male will engage the attacker with the other male spider around.
  5. Tamed behavior
    1. The venom ability can be used only when on the shoulder. When the venom ability is used, the male spider will jump on the target and return to the player if on passive.
    2. The dance ability can be activated when on the ground and can't be used on the shoulder. The dance ability can be used to tame a female, mate with a female or for the fun.

Spawn in the wild :

The spider spawn in a group with 2 to 5 males and 0 to 1 female.

On Ragnarok, this spider can spawn in the forest in north-west (beginner zone) and in the canyon. This spider is not supposed to be in caves as there is already  the araneo in caves.

Taming :

  • The male is tamed via clasic ko method.
  • The female is tamed using a tamed male spider dance.
    • To initiate the taming, the female should be alone (no other wild spider) and it should have only one tamed male on the ground (tamed male on shoulder are fine as long as they stay on the shoulder). Then, the tamed male should start dancing.
    • The taming will be a succession of the male and female both dancing for some time (few minutes) but only one at a time. You have to start/stop the dancing of the male according to the female dancing or not. The taming effectiveness will decrease when both male and female are dancing or both aren't dancing.
    • If the taming last enough time without the taming reaching 0, the female will be successfully tamed. If the taming effectiveness reaches 0 or the taming is interrupted (like player taking the male on the shoulder), the female will lock on the male (or the player that have the male on the shoulder) and kill the male instantly (kill both the player and the male on the shoulder).
    • When the female is tamed, the female will have eggs (see Breeding for details).

Mating/breeding :

The mating process is the same as the taming process of a female. That's why the female taming lead to a tamed female with eggs.

The female won't lay eggs but she will keep the eggs on her back. The egg incubation will be treated as a pregnancy.

The female will have at least 3 babies with more males than females (same ratio as the spawn : 5 males for 1 female).

Roles of the spider with this suggestion

  • Early taming helper : the male is easy to get and can help dealing torpor for taming.
  • Taming counter : as this spider in the wild will attack unconscious creatures, be careful when you tame a creature via ko as this spider can eat your unconscious creature.
  • Solo explorer/tamer : with the female rideable and able to walk on every surface, this spider is useful to travel. In addition, the male can be on the shoulder to benefit of the mating boost. The mating boost can help this average creature to deal with the big threats of Ark.
  • Late game PvP female disabler : while being an average creature, a well bred female can be very useful to disable a single target in a PvP fight due to the cast net ability scaling on the speed stat.
  • Collection creature : this spider is cute, fluffy, with a lot of colors and can dance ! So this spider is a cool creature to get if you look for a pet.

Limitations with this suggestion :

  • The spider will be with low to average stats to match with a early game creature. In the wild, a pack of wild raptor can easily kill a group of spiders.
  • When tamed, the female will be slow without a possibility to increase her movement speed. The male will have low health.
  • The taming and mating process are skill based (with dancing) and not time based and a taming/mating failure will result in the male death. So taming/mating can't be done in high numbers easily.

@DoseishyCan you eventually add this detailed suggestion to your global submission ? As a lot of people love the idea of a cute shoulder-pet spider, I think it will attract people if a suggestion with a shoulder-pet spider is easily visible.

@SoviraYou had another artwork for the last submission. Adding more artworks can be good for the submission :)

I have just discovered I can't vote/upvote in this stage because my account on here, which I only use to look at stuff, doesn't have enough posts. What a dumb system. My account has been around for almost 2 years, so it's not like it's a freshly created one. Hopefully others can help it to get/maintain top 10 spot for next voting phase. :')

I certainly hope it would help melt some of the hate and fear off of many! especially the BABIES! I saw a lot of people crying in the comments on some of the youtube videos last time about the influencers not posting a 'trigger warning' so people could skip the whole submission and I had a MAJOR eye roll at that, one even threatening to unsub because of it, truly sad. :(

I myself use to have pretty severe irl arachnophobia, but cute is cute. Although I wouldn't really want something like this near me irl, it is still freaking adorable. Honestly games with their spiders have helped tone down my fear of them. Now its just the creepy ones like black widows. Still dont want any spiders near me though. This spider reminds me of Lucas the spider as well. Lucas is so damn cute man.

Sadly we have an influencer who submitted a creature and actively abused their reach to thank for this, they would have votes in the thousands otherwise which is unfair to quite literally everyone else who submitted creatures :( it's super unfortunate that it hurt those who have been around for a long while too. I really hope the whole entire voting system in itself gets a change, it badly needs it ❤️

I will definitely! I'm working on one right now, just need to finish the other half, may even do a baby one but it would be the sized up one, I will be changing up the global submission very soon and adding quite a bit to it, I have the pictures and text saved right now on my discord server so it should be okay! Thanks for taking the time to write this out again, if I do post all of it on aberration I'll immediately add suggestions as comment but put a reference text for 'shoulder buddy variant idea' to grab peoples attention who would prefer that up top because of how many would like that!

Also I should probably explain this prior to posting, the only reason I will be doing the artwork with both large jumpers is increased visibility as well as sticking to how the games creatures keep to their realism (mostly), as jumping spiders are extremely intelligent and are unlike other arachnids, they do not have extreme size differences, that which Araneo would for sure have, however that doesn't take anything away from it being a terrific suggestion and something that deserves consideration and to be seen! ❤️

I will definitely get the post cleaned up and fix some things in it, as well as putting the notice at the top for variational ideas like yours!
