Why is the game size so ridiculous?

Recommended Posts

I actually heard that the size of the game was inversely proportional to how well their users understood game development.

The code portion of Ark is extremely small. What takes up a lot of space are the dinos. Models, textures, sounds, animations, etc. Most people don't realize that a single paragon character takes over 1 gb, and those are somewhat stripped down as Epic doesn't release all the sound effects, particle effects, etc with them.

Ark currently has 176 dinos and if each one was around 1.25 gb that's 220gb. Map files, textures, models, effects, sounds ,etc for that stuff can easily make up the rest.

You know, that actually makes sense.

But how about the multiple gigabyte updates that harrow people with slow internet connections? Is it all code or is there some other tech-wizardry behind it?
