Later today the ARK will be updated to Version 235 and with it comes a plethora of new content, including our new terrifying friend, the Terror Bird!

The Terror Bird also known as the Phorusrhacidae Rapidesultor, is a ferocious but tamable avian capable of high-speed sprints and brief hover-like leaps. It is not a flying bird per se, as its flight is comprised of short, sustained “Joust”-like glides or leaps. At eight to 12 feet tall, the Terror Bird is aggressive, but still tamable and ridable, making it an excellent combat mount, particularly for harassing and scouting. Riders of the Terror Bird gain most of the benefits of a fast, mobile ground-based theropod, while also gaining some of the freedom of movement from a flyer. It is known to show traits related to theropods such as the Utahraptor, Carnotaurus and the ever formidable Tyrannosaurus Rex.

The Grappling Hook is a game-changing tool enabling Survivors the ability to scale cliffs, hitch a ride by attaching to a flying creature, wrangle other players/prisoners, or even small creatures to drag along! Learning how to regularly use this tool will alter the nature of your attacks and dramatically expand the range of your travels with greater ease and fun!

Today’s ARK update will also include:

    • Tribe Alliances (PvE and PvP). Yes, finally, small Tribes can band together against larger ones!
    • Fishing Upgrade! Coelacanth Nutritia, common name Coel, are now different sizes (and give different amount of resources depending on the fish size...gives the rare chance of a super-large catch!)
    • Fully Localizable Game Text: Now you can crowd-source translation and dynamic fonts for any language without Modding/TC's!
    • All current Items added to the Master Items ID array

Now new players can start the epic survival-adventure ARK: Survival Evolved during the Lunar sale on Steam for only $19.99 (33% off standard price)

    You. I like you.

    Terror Bird looks super fun!

How long can they glide? If it's for a limited amount of time, well.... Those ones that went off the mountain are screwed xD

    Very cool.

That old British TV show Primeval had the Terror Birds in it. I can't help thinking every Dino fan comes from the same stock.

Doesn't look like you can grapple and shoot since they're using crossbows for the hook. Pretty useful still.

Yeah so if you want to tame a quetz. Make your friend drop you above a wild quetz and grapple to its back. Then ungrabble and crouch.. Becareful to not fall off or knock it out above water!

Ooooh wonder if that would work? Since I thought they made it so you can no longer land on their backs and stay.

Here's a question I wonder if you could drag the unconscious quetz out the water by dragging it with the hook.

I doubt you will but will be something to test.

We do not know whether it will be a month until we get the terror bird and grappling hook after our next update or a week after our next update. We got the Procoptodon a couple weeks after PC, and we're getting everything up to Gallimimus in about a week. (Which is a couple weeks after Galli and nearly a month after Dung Beetle and Dimetrodon were released on PC)

Exactly what I said? I said Galli will be released on Xbox next week along with Dimetro and Dung Beetle. I am aware it was released last week. That's why I said a couple weeks after it's initial release on PC. Dimetrodon and Dung Beetle make their appearance on Xbox a month after their release on PC.

    1 week old + 1 week until release = 2 weeks.

and @FaneBlackwing never said anything about the Dinos being old already, Blackwing was justing noting how far behind the Xbox version is from the PC version. :)
