  1. Wow, that changes things. I'll wait to hear what they have to say, but I might be getting my credit card out soon.
  2. Too bad. It's a great piece of software. I got so much use out of it that I sent the creator $20 a few years ago.
  3. My group (mostly me and my kids) will be waiting to see how the private servers play out. If we can have our own clusters without owning a bunch of licenses, we'll buy it.
  4. Sadly that is true. But the agreement between Snail and Nitrado (https://investor.snail.com/node/7086/html) includes an exception for end-users to operate servers for their own use, provided it is a non-commercial server. WC hasn't said exactly what this means in real-world terms, but the way it's being implemented so far will mean the death of the unofficial community.
  5. WC does need to clarify what clusters will look like. The license terms that we get now leave us having to buy a copy for each instance we have running, but it's not clear if we can get a cluster to work even if we buy multiple copies.
  6. Most of us were expecting some bugs. What we weren't expecting was uncertainty around what we get to do with private servers. WC previously left us with the impression we'd get to run our servers as we have for years, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Until we get some clarity on the issue, the only vote we have is with our dollars or our reviews.
  7. Perhaps somebody has done the math and has figured out Snail can survive without the unofficial crowd, or maybe they're hoping enough of us will pay up anyway. In any event, the more I think about it, the less inclined I am to buy ASA until we get something clear from WC on what private servers and clusters will look like. I can live with all sorts of game glitches (my kids and I have played Ark for years), but this is a deal-breaker for me.
  8. No, I completely get that I'll have to buy a copy for each map if I do this. Not happy about that at all, especially given all the money I've spent buying Ark for me and my kids over the years. I'm not sure about the clusters. Again, some clarity from WC would go a long way here. If clusters are out, I'll be leaning heavily toward skipping ASA.
  9. App ID is 2430930 if you're looking for it. You'll have to login with steamcmd to download it (no anonymous). I'm not sure how you go about running or configuring the game yet, as mine is still downloading. EDIT: Not a promising start -- trying to run the dedi server exe returns "Application load error 6:0000065432"
  10. I think we're going to have to live with having two Steam accounts and buying the game twice (or four times if you're paying for two kids like I am). It's either that or Nitrado. Or skip ASA altogether. Still deciding which route I'll go.
  11. There is though. I read the Nitrado agreement, and it specifically allows us to run non-commercial servers. I also think that WC should tell us what's going on regardless, even if it's a lame "Sorry, this was a difficult business decision, and we hope to make this available in the future." With all the years we've been players (not to mention paying) they owe us that much.
  12. Is that the official word from WC? So far I haven't seen anything from them on the subject. I'm sure they're having a busy day, but it'd clear things up a bunch if somebody were to pop in and say "Sorry, this is supposed to work but it's broken."
  13. If somebody can figure out how to make it work I'll be thrilled. We'd all much rather be setting up our servers right now than being here complaining about the situation.
  14. By my reading, the agreement between Snail and Nitrado allows us to run small clusters. Section 6.1 (c) (i) says that the deal does not apply to "non-commercial, non-monetized servers owned by end-users themselves and for such end-users' own use." There's nothing in there that prevents me from running a small server for myself, my kids and their friends to play on. So why isn't it possible for me to create one? WC?
  15. Well, thanks to the Steam refund button they won't collect any money from me until there's some clear path on how we can host our own clusters. I'm not very happy about the situation, especially considering all the money I spent on ASE (x3 in my case, buying the base game and the expansions for me and my kids).
  16. Why is that we're only learning about this from Nitrado? WC left us with the impression we'd get our own clusters for ASA. Right now it looks like they left us to learn about this when we tried to set up a server.
  17. One server is ridiculous. Even if my group was prepared to live on one map at a time (which we aren't), how are we supposed to move characters, dinos etc. between maps??
  18. If that's true and we can't have our own clusters, I'm definitely out. It'd be nice to hear something from the devs first though.
  19. Same here. I'll refund the game if I can't get this working.
  20. Is there a guide to configuring a server for ASA, or do we have to figure it out for ourselves? It's been a very long time since I did this for ASE without the help of a server manager. Guess I'll start with steamcmd and see what I can get running. EDIT: I made it as far as trying to steamcmd to install ASA, and received the following error: ERROR! Failed to install app '2399830' (No subscription) The release was only an hour ago, so I'll wait a bit and try again.
  21. That's good advice. I'll probably buy it anyway and complain later, lol.
  22. Man, it sure looks pretty. The recommended GPU is an RTX 3080 -- better get your Christmas lists updated. I wish they'd have shown how well it renders in a large base when you come flying in at top speed. Guess I'll have to wait until I build one to find out.
  23. You're the tribemate who's always getting into my compass blueprint vault, aren't you?
  24. There's already a thread on the movement speed, and most of us are quite happy about the change. I'm willing to give it a shot. As for the cost, nobody likes paying for another game, but making games costs money and Snail's financial picture isn't pretty. If you wanna play Ark, then be ready to pay.
  25. There was a time when the browser wouldn't show you servers running mods unless you had those mods installed. Could still be that way.
