I'm really contemplating buying this game. Was watching streams last night. Look's to be fun, but I hear don't play on public servers, as they suck & are slow....to play on a server with friends is best

it's a fantastic game. It does have a few minor issues as it's sill in alpha stage but it's worth it with free dlc every month. The game just keeps growing. Come and be a part of it

If I get it now, did I miss out on all the previous DLC?

to be honest you're best having a go at single player until you get a feel for the game. It's a good way to get used to living with dinos. Then when you're ready for it join an online server dependant on which map you prefer to play (currently there are two).

And anything you do SP, carries over to MP? If so, I'm definitely getting this 

Unfortunatley not. However you can take your SP online so friends can come and see what you have done and play while youre playing. But if you were to join an online server you would be starting from scratch.

Unless you are on a non-dedicated server that allows character downloads.

player dedicated also allows download, some do some dont just look for the right server.

Update: I purchased Ark last night. Started playing single player to get my feet wet. Good thing because I've no Idea DILO I'm doing lol. I crafted a few things. I was pissed when I died & my inventory was GONE. Lost so much stuff. I don't like that aspect of the game. Wish it was like 7 Days, where after you respawn, you can pick your stuff up where you died 

Sounds like me when I first started. Just grind your way to a house and a simple bed or two and you will be fine. 

Sleeping bags are also great early on. You can move them and throw them down quickly if trouble is coming.

Most dedicated owners have shut off downloads since the release of admin commands. Just too easy to abuse now.

yupp most do, just gutta find one that doesnt if thats what your looking for, I dont mind starting over.

Haven't found any houses yet. Not sure if there are any on single player mode. I know I just learned sleeping bag. Starting to collect what I need for it.

You build the house. Definitely make a couple sleeping bags and put them down to give you temporary respawn points for now.
