  1. Okay, both of you make sense. I wonder if we'll end up trapped in an enclosed part of the ship. It's damaged from Rockwell, so we can't escape and get to wherever it's being controlled from. We also might be near some "biomes," holding creatures, plants, resources, and creatures. Similar to proto-ARKs. This style of map could work perfectly fine.

Thanks. That is the concept I choose to hold onto... I won in the end. It was not pretty but I think I learned a lot this way. Therizinos are sooo much easier to get through the gate AND much easier to navigate all the twists and turns of the cave. Don't get me wrong, having a good Rex is always good, especially one that can stay up front and tank anything the cave wants to throw your way. But there simply is not enough room in there to fight with a herd. I had 4 rexes with me but I don't think I used more than two at any one time until I fought the giga.

If I had to give advice on that cave, with my limited experience, I would say to keep it simple.... don't expect to use your whole army to fight through the cave...only use a couple good Dino's to clear the path. The hardest part for me was just keeping everyone on the path. The fighting was easy, the walking was hard. I can see why people prefer to do that cave with friends. Micromanaging an army is difficult alone. Luckily there is no 1 hour time limit on single player. Because I never would have made it. ?

An idea I had was to ride a tek saddled rex, with two allos running alongside, and just clear the way like that. My main hypothetical army would be fifteen theris and two mate-boosted yuties. Would that work? It won't come into play for a while anyhow, I still haven't fought a single boss.

Epic fail and a good finish... Sorry about the length.

So today was the TEK cave.  I had never done it before and thought I would start on Gamma.  Playing solo.  I new from watching videos that the hardest part would be keeping everything together and under control.  Also, with all the different server settings it is hard to fully understand what it will take to run the cave and defeat the overseer.  Some do it with super duper inflated rexes and I can't gage how my team will do by watching a mega rex slice through other rexes like a hot knife through butter.  Anyway, the point I am getting at is I might have overprepared or at least planned on taking too much.... just in case.

So I had the whole team lined up outside the door.  I had a team of 4 allos, 1 Yuty, 14 rexes, 6 therizinos, and a bird on my shoulder.  I had them in groups of 5 to 6 dinos each.  Each group had a leader and the rest were set to follow one behind the other.  I think I had it so I would have to make 5 trips through the door by grabbing a leader and walking them in carefully, then running out for the next leader. 5 minutes to take in 5 groups.  I was confident.  I was originally planning on using cryo pods for half the team, but when the game wouldn't let me unpod them just outside the door I figured I couldn't do it inside either, so everyone had their ticket and stood in line.

I open the door and took in the yuty and allos first.  I was going to use the allos and a single TEK rex as the wrecking crew in the cave and therefore (in theory) save the other rexes and therizinos for the overseer.  First group went in nice.  I took them in far enough to have enough space for all dinos behind them but not too far that I would aggro the cave creatures that were just on the edge of my view.  I grabbed the second team, 6 rexes, and took them in along side the first.  All good.  I grabbed the next group of 6 rexes and put them along the wall behind the first group.  Oh, Noooo!  Only 3 of the 6 came through the door.

I ran back out of the cave to see two of my rexes in the lava and 1 stuck on the rocks.  I got the one off the rocks and shoved him inside the cave.  I had to redirect the other two and bring them to an area where they could get out.  That was my mistake.  I should have never messed with them and just written them off.  When the first one finally got out, I mounted the saddle through the flames and ran for the door... But it closed just before I got there. It is amazing how fast one can go through emotions of denial and disbelief.  Then I sat the screen fill with red lines as all my dinos inside were pronounced dead.  Shock! Agony! Anger! Embarrassment! I touched on them all. AND Frustration at all the lost time and effort for for breeding, training, and gathering resources for saddles.  But I'm sure many of you know the pain.

I was left standing with my two rexes (now at half health but no longer on fire) and 6 therizinos that were standing halfway down the stone walkway I built across the lava.  I walked past them all and climbed on my argy that was at the far end of the crater.  I flew around in circles for a bit, then decided that today is still my day to finish this dang map.  So I grabbed all my cryo pods and flew down to collect the rest of my therizino dragon army.  I also grabbed two rexes that were back at base.  This time there was no allos, and no yuty... just 4 rexes and 19 therizinos.

I lined them up and open the door.  Luckily there was no drama getting in this time.  I hopped on the healthiest rex and went to work.  I would clear a section and go back to carefully train the others down behind me.  It was working great until about half way through the cave something spooked one of the therizinos and it took off running.  It went over a cliff and six others followed.  Now I was down to 4 rexes and 12 therizinos.  Well, at least now I don't have to decide which 20 get to advance to the overseer.  (I laughed but it still hurt).  The giga at the bottom did not jump into the lava as I hoped so the team fought it.  More dinos to heal.  Yeah!

Teleported up to the observation deck and did the typical look around for awhile to give the team a chance to heal a bit.  Went into the final fight, not 100 percent healthy but close.  I directed the team to attack the overseer, and I ran around fighting the defense droids.  A few times I looked up and just admired the fight they were giving the overseer.  And it finished a little better than I expected.  No other dinos died in that last fight.  I was very proud.  Watched the cut-scene.  Smiled.  Good night.

No problem with the length. I'll have to do that cave someday, and the more details, the better. Glad you won in the end.

  4. Okay, BIG update. So there I was, considering dinowiping to try to get good rexes/megatheirium to spawn. I wanted to get back to base first though. And I as I was heading home, I saw a pair of therizinos. An 85. Meh. I checked the second. IT WAS 150!

I went home, praying it wouldn't despawn, and scraped together 8 exceptional kibble, with the help of my industrial cooker, plus I grabbed a pre-made piece of extraordinary I had cooked a while back. Note to self: start a yuty kibble farm soon. I checked Dododex, and since I have 4x taming, I saw that that wouldn be just barely less than enough, so I brought mejos to top it off. I upgraded an old raft taming pen of mine, and drove it over.

I trapped both, but managed to kill the 85. Knocked the 150 out, spent a while taming it (I feel so bad for anyone on official, that must take forever), and brought it home.

Here's the stat report: good melee, average/somewhat bad health. He's male, so I need a good health female. She won't need better melee, but I'm not complaining if she does. So now I have an all-around great female rex (pretty shade of green too), a good melee, bad health female sloth, and a good melee, and bad health male therizino.

So one breeder for each boss island boss (not counting overseer). So glad I waited on the dinowipe (although I might do it tomorrow). If you read all this, thanks for taking the time to.

  5. I JUST THOUGHT OF SOMETHING CRAZY! Most people think that Gen 2 will be on another planet, but I've realized that it might not be. What if it's a second simulation? That would explain a few things:

    A) Why it's called Genesis Part 1 and 2 instead of just the first one being Genesis and the second being called something different. They're different parts of the Genesis simulation.

    B) If we actually made it too another planet successfully, I feel like there would be way too much cutscene, so far we've just looked around and scratched our implant. HLN-A did a bit more of an actual cutscene for Genesis Part One, but it still was short.

    C) We wouldn't have made it to another planet successfully. Rockwell saw to that by grabbing us. It's possible he stuck us in another pod.

Thos are my theories. I still don't know what happened to us between saving the earth and waking up in a simulation, or why the "colony ship" exists.

That is not a dino would’ve thought I would get as a suggestion. Interesting. Aren’t they a pain to tame? I remember getting my first one and being like... never again.

hope you enjoyed your hiking ?

All herbivores are resistant to dragon breath, theris are only a bit weaker than rexes for the other two and much tougher for the dragon. Plus they can heal with veggie cakes.

    Hi Everyone!

I'm a relatively new ARK player that is still hanging around The Island on single player. Today I decided to check out Ragnarok and see if I could find a high level male rex to tame so that I can start breeding for bosses. I've not been having much luck finding one on the island, and even though I am trying to do the story maps in order I'm starting to get a little frustrated.  Instead of a rex I came back with two allosaurus so I guess that was kind of a fail, but I have no regrets. I'm still thinking of names for them.

Tomorrow I will probably focus on breeding a few more megatherium. I'm close to having the nineteen I need for the broodmother fight, although only four of them have enough levels for me to feel comfortable. I may go ahead and move them to the obelisk to clear up some space at my base.

I'm in a similar position, except I don't use the same character on Ragnarok and the other non-canon ARKs, and since I'm doing the maps in order, I have to rely on The Island. I'm a bit behind you though, I have an amazing female rex for breeding, but only one megatheirium, who despite being 150, turned out with pretty awful health. I really want to beat those bosses. I've just been looking for a good male (120-150) who I can try to breed with her, and get two babies with better health, and then breed those two...

And when I beat it on gamma my grand prizes for all that work will be some pretty useless tekgrams (not counting the replicator), ten element I can't use yet, a flag, and a trophy.

Are Carnos cool tames? I haven't heard much talk about them (as opposed to many other creatures). It seems most survivors just consider them either victims or leave them be for other reasons.

Hi @Eleusius! Carnos are basically early-game rexes. Many people didn't like them, since once you got a rex, they became useless. However, they recently got a bleed, so now you can slowly drain an enemy's health. Righ-click (or left trigger on console), wait ten seconds, and the target will have lost 5% of its health. That doesn't seem like much, but if you can do this and get away each time, you can kill even the toughest things in twenty bites (or less, if the regular bite damage is enough to kill it).

  9. Wow, this thread's been active lately! It's fun to read what everyone else is doing. Today I didn't do much, but yesterday I had an awful incident. On The Center I had gotten bored, and decided that the map just looks a bit ugly, and the the abundance of high-levels isn't worth staying on a weird looking map. Plus, I get lag spikes constantly. I moved my char to Crystal Isles, and decided to start doing more stuff there; after I lost so much, I'd been leaving it alone. I was pulling my stuff out of the green obelisk (it's a painfully slow process, one thing at a time), since I have a bed next to it, and I'd transferred in my high-level thyla.

Suddenly, a crash hit. I thought: "Oh well, I'll have to pull it all out again," and I went back to spawn my char in, since I thought it had probably forgotten everything I did after leaving the main menu. The first thing I noticed was that it said respawn at bed, instead of spawn at bed. I spawned in, and found that everything I had pulled out, and my thyla were gone. I'm honestly considering spawning it back in. Only thing is, I don't remember the level or stats. I know it was wild 130, average stats, got to about 180 post-tame, and was leveled in health about seven times, and melee about seven times. I don't want to take my non-story char anywhere near CI for a while. That place has brought me nothing but grief. Sad, because my base there is really nice.

Today I just looked for rexes and megatheirium on The Island. I think I'll spend more time with my story char, Scorched won't unlock itself. And I'm aware it doesn't have to be unlocked, but I want to do them in order. I also have ton of low-level dinos I've acquired over time, and they take of a lot of space in my already small base. I'm thinking about making a "Site B" to store them all, and I'll keep my good dinos back at my real base. I could just kill them, but even the most useless 50-something kapro brings back memories.

  10. Well I moved my Rag character to The Center, and got a shack made. I'm right by the blue obelisk, and even though it's a bit cheaty, I dino-wiped to get there, since it was surrounded by dangerous stuff. Don't tell anyone. I've got my new thyla and an argent there. I tamed a 145 raptor, but it has pretty bad damage and weight. I guess raptors don't have great weight or damage in general, but it's still a but of a shame.

Honestly, I kind of regret moving. The map's really detailed water and terrain are taking a toll on my less-than-stellar PC. The cliffs and islands are all weirdly shaped too. I guess it'll still be fun running the caves, I nearly fell in one while exploring with my argentavis. It was a big "pit" hidden in some ruins. I'll see which one it was on the wiki, and if it doesn't look too bad, I might explore. Why have a pocket thyla if you don't ever use it?

I kind of want to go to Crystal Isles, but I maybe I'll stay here. I don't have tek transmitters, so I want to remain near the obelisk. On Rag and Crystal Isles I'm somewhat near obelisks, and on The Center I'm practically on top of one. I also wanted to get a new base on Rag...

So much to do on the non-stories, but The Island isn't getting much love right now.

  11. Today I went to the highlands, got mutton, cooked it, and journeyed to the savannah area in the south. I used a pen to tame a 130 female thyla, and named her Caramel. I'll need a bit more metal to make her a saddle, since I spent so much on tranq darts. It was a long tame, and after two high-level thylas tames on different maps, I've decided that I'll want kibble for the next one. That was basically the whole day, but I did notice a male 140 rex, and a female 145 rex on the way home. When I get a saddle and more darts/arrows, I'll tame them both. I don't know if their babies can beat the Ragnarok gaurdians, they might be weaker than normal, but the dragon would probably kill them fast. They could probably take the iceworm queen, and the center gaurdians if I ever go there. Going there doesn't seem like a bad idea, it might not have any new dinos, but it has some cool caves and biomes.

  12. I went back to ark after a short break. I decided I didn't want to return to the island and get back to the grind of getting high-level dinos just yet, so I played on Rag. I grabbed my stuff from when I had died to a bunch of sabertooths, and got some stuff made up to replace what I'd lost in the buggy death on CI (for those of you who didn't read that post, I glitched through the mesh, fell out onto the ground, and my body couldn't be retrieved for some reason, even though I died in the normal world, not the mesh).

I cleared by the swamp castle with my argent, just in case I want to make a base there, but the bats hit hard, and are crazy levels. And of course, just as I finished off the very last one in the group that charged me, I got mega rabies. I pulled through with 13 health remaining, assisted by cooked meat. I think the best way to do it would be to put a foundation to prevent respawns, then pull them away until they despawn, basically what you have to do to get a wyvern egg.

But I think I want to make my first "real" base on Ragnarok near an obelisk, since with this character I'm very liberal about transferring between non-story arks. The three best places I've found are the redwoods by the red obelisk, maybe I could get a tree platfom base going, the big highlands cave, with all the wyvern scar looking pillars since it's kind of near red, or the big cave by the blue obelisk.

I also grabbed my griffin, thorny dragon, and doedicurus from CI, but I forgot how buggy transferring cryoed things in, and the latter two came in cryopods. They each got like twenty magic levels. I pumped them all into weight, since there really was no point in just leaving those level-ups there, but I still feel guilty. At least they're only gatherers. I got the stuff ready for a small thylacoleo trap. Is one high too small? I want to tame one tommorrow, I can stop at the highlands for easy mutton, and get some campfires made to cook it all. Then I'll just go to the Scorched Earth islands and tame myself a thyla. Finding a high-level should be easy.

Oh, I also I got a journeyman carno saddle, a journeyman arthro saddle, and a journeyman AR blueprint, all from a red drop with a ring. And from a purple I got a mastercraft crossbow, it can replace the engram quality one I had been forced to make after losing everything. My carno, my important early meat collecter, now wears a nice saddle, and I really want an arthro suddenly. Everything is coming together.

Yesterday, I ran the lower south cave (super easy) with my megatherium and otter on my shoulder. I made out with 3 artifacts, simply got bored of standing around and waiting for it to respawn. I only need 1 for broodmother but I wanted extra.

next login, I want to chase down a good saber to tame so I can run the lava cave with it and the otter. I’ve read the wiki and the forums but if you have any additional tips and tricks, I’m all ears!

God that cave is awful. The lava cave, I mean. The first two jumps are easy, the other two should just be grappled over. This must be done on foot, so carry a shotgun. DON'T FALL IN! At least once I unspooled a bit low, and nearly was dunked into the lava. One of the "easy" jumps is much harder the second time, I missed it, and landed on a lower ledge. I managed to cryo my saber, and use my last grapple to escape.

  14. I didn't play ark, but I'm trying to decide if I should play tomorrow. I've already accepted that going on a PvP server "casually" was kind of a mistake, and if it wasn't a managarmr it would have been a raptor, or rex, or, velo, or spino, or wyvern, or trike, or the person with the parasaur...it could have been anything. No point in getting mad about it. I don't want to return to the island in SP yet, that sloth was such a disappointing letdown. Not sure if anyone else watches him, but that sloth's level combined with how it actually turned out, reminds me of Phlinger Phoo's rex named Melonhead. I sort of want to make a new base on Rag, since my current one is really nothing more than an upgraded shack. The falls near the beaver lake, the desert ruins, the castle of the swamp (would require heavy-duty clearing), and the many huge, ruined bridges are all nice. One base probably wouldn't do Ragnarok justice.

  15. I'm at a rough spot. I was back on Rag, but I died in a crazy incident with three sabertooths. I could have grabbed my stuff, but I just wasn't feeling like it. So instead, I went to an official PvP server, just for fun. I've got a dilo and a dodo. There are a bunch of "pieces" of newer bases scattered around, plus an actual one. I could have pickaxed in and looted it, but I had just fallen down a cliff and knew that the nearby parasaur could easily kill me. Plus, I felt a bit bad for this poor fellow Bob, and didn't come back later with my dilo. I've got a thatch hut, I had started one in a different spot, but it was abandoned due to a spino sighting. I thought official servers were supposed to be tough, but the gathering rates are insane. I'm not sure if I'll actually commit or not.

I want to return to The Island (solo), but I'm in a bit of a slump there. I want to kill those stupid bosses. And I'll need to do a lot of grinding to get metal for saddles. Even if I just use primitive megatheirium saddles, nineteen will take 1,045 metal. I also want to start getting underwater, but good barries are rare. Maybe I should run the upper south cave, just to get my confidence back. So let's see, I need a good male sloth, a good baryonyx/megalodon/sarco, a bunch of metal, a good male rex, a good rex saddle blueprint...wow.

  16. 6 minutes ago, Penguin73 said:

I will say a Baryonyx is the best all around choice for that cave.  I did not have a good one and used a dire wolf instead (I eventually returned later with a Bary so I could do the whole cave).  But like me and my wolf, you will only be able to do half the cave with your thyla.  You can still reach the artifact via a shortcut but you won't be able to do the underwater sections.  Your thyla will be fine to get you down to the ruins near the water if you don't go too gung ho and take on the whole cave at once.  Just take it slow and heal when you can.  But I would not ever attempt to take it into the water to do the lower portion in the water tunnels.  There are plenty of videos out there that will help you find the short cut by grappling across the water.  Take extra grapples and be prepared to fight the bats solo (on foot) at the other end (the short section leading to the artifact).  I died twice in there.  Good luck.

I know about the shortcut, I was wondering if a thyla could climb up to it. Thanks for the advice.

  17. Mostly played a different game, but I did head back home to put away my looted stuff. Also went back to CI, and transferred from there to Ragnarok, where I'm getting back on my feet. Crystal wyverns on Ragnarok are great. Tomorrow I want to get a thylacoleo, but I'll need mutton first. Ovis aren't hard to find on Rag, but I don't have a grill or fabricator there, which makes it a bit tough to get mutton cooked up. Unlike the last time I went to the non-stories, it wasn't in disappointment, I just need a break for now. Also, last time I asked I didn't get an answer, will Strawberry (thyla) with his 5,000 health, and 313% damage, be able to handle the upper south cave? I'm no stranger to caving, I've done four, and I can use a cryopod for the chokepoint.

  18. Not much, looked around the island for loot and high-level creatures. That 150 megatheirium was such a disappointment. A good male rex would help too. I found a blueprint for an apprentice pump (or as Syntac calls it, the baby unmaker), a pre-made ramshackle longneck, and ramshackle flak leggings, which if you remember my cave run you know I already had some, BUT, since then I found more protective journeyman chitin, however these are better than either. The fourth pair of leggings I've worn in a short time. Also a few saddles and saddle BPs, and a ramshackle fabricated pistol. I'm thinking about making a scrap metal farm due to my constant metal shortage. I also tamed a 130 sabertooth, just because. And found a giga, titan, and quetzal all in the same area. All that's missing is a unicorn. Also, question. Could Strawberry, who has about 5,500 health and 313% damage handle upper south if I get him by the chokepoint in a cryopod? Thanks. IDK if I'll even play ARK tomorrow, right now I feel like playing a different game.

  19. 59 minutes ago, Eleusius said:

@Penguin73 Thanks for bothering. I know why it happens - I set some of them to flee, because I want them to stay out of a fight. However if they just "vanish", it's no use to set them to flee. Same problem with wandering. If you don't keep an eye on a wandering dino (or have them wandering only in a fenced area), they will wander off and never be seen again. However, all this is not true with the trike I lost during my last episode. I suppose he just got stuck on something during the last expedition I did with him. This theme, however, happened quite often when I went out with an expedition party and when I turn around half of them guys is missing. Then I scout back and collect whatever I can find of the team.

Yesterdays report is late, because the servers were down. Well, let me start with a question. All of you guys seem sort of advanced, while I'm like the new kid on the block telling you tales which you probably already know. So - do you actually want to read this?

Ok. now what happened last? I found a relatively high-level trike (for my standards at least) and decided I'd take that instead of my lost one. Well - I should have planned that one better. The taming attempt was so badly set up that I failed miserably, fleeing back into my base where the trike was immediately slaughtered (I couldn't close the gates in time) and caused so much havoc that I spent about half an hour sorting things out afterwards. During that sorting I did make another tour around the base to pick up the scattered dodos and other dinos and to my very very surprise I found my old and beloved trike sitting just two stories below my base. Now, don't tell me he's always been there. I've made that round a dozen times before and he never was there. Just for some unknown reason the game had decided to spawn him in at that place again. So despite failing to get a better trike, I got what I wanted and I'm happy.

Other than that, I harvested some resources (still have to do most by hand except berries). Nothing spectecular (well, I had had my spectaculum with the failed taming).

I really need to learn to kite those dinos into the pen before messing with them.

Anyways... heads up guys. Have fun.
    Eleusius.

Just some advice: never use flee. I did too when I was new, but they run so far away, it's too easy to lose them. Just mix passive and neutral. Glad you found your trike.

    • Thanks 1
  20. Today was...odd. I tamed the 150, with help from Dododex. I used a pen and darts, and safely kocked her out. Unfortunately, her health is miserable. 3.7k, yikes! She does have high melee, 325%. If I can find a male with good health, I can try to get her melee and his health on a male and female, and breed those. I still am glad I tamed her.

  21. It could have been an amazing day. It could have. While looking for high-level baryonyx, I found a 130 yuty and a 150 megatheirium. I un-cryoed Strawberry, not believing my luck. I went for the sloth. The yuty was far enough away to not be a concern. I laid into it with my crossbow. When it started running, it kept going into the water, swimming around for ages, and finally coming back out. Where did the Overseer find it, a ceral box? It got pretty bloody, so I switched to longneck, but when I ran out of tranq darts I had to switch back. I used my magnifying glass to check its health. Finally I got to the point where I had to wait for it to heal for each shot. Its torpor went down too fast for this to be viable. From what I've seen, megatheirium have slow torpor drop, does it go down faster while awake? Many a survivor in my position would just go back to CI after an incident like that. Not me. I will return, this time with more longneck ammo! I swear it!

Is it considered weird? I'm 102 on my main character and haven't even though about doing the bosses myself.

Not that weird, but I'm trying to do the story maps in order, which means beating the bosses is a big priority for me. Everyone plays differently, but since I've been trying to get there for a long time it's a bit more concerning.
