Easy way to get metal

I like this method myself applied correctly. It's only going to to worth it for solo PvP players or very small tribes, because yes if you can defend a quetz or high weight argents, there's no reason to be using this method.

However, the attractiveness is the incredibly low setup cost. If my argy is getting killed every other time I log off, taming and leveling takes a heck of lot longer than getting some chutes and even building a thatch tower (though I don't really find that part necessary, just jump off of something high).

The drop transfer method is also better, but going that route, I seem to spend a lot of time trying to scope out nearby drops and getting killed by nasties in the process of looking or while dumping metal in. I've also never been killed by a player on a flier while I'm parachuting around the map, maybe it's the angles I take or maybe I've just been exceptionally lucky.
