I think the story line would have to go along the lines of, it's a test island, the specimen implant is a tracker and has the survivors information data, and the people are being tested on how they evolve and develop  from nothing, the scientists send beacon care packagers to aid the test subjects.

Here is my fan theory.

In the year 2275 the earth is struck by a asteroid equivalent go that of the same one that ended the cretaceous period. This mass extinction event was known to happen by other beings in the galaxy. Being highly evolved themselves they see humanity as an endangered species so just as we do they tranq enough of us to start out on another planet... Now this planet is very far away but in the same kind of goldilocks zone earth is in. However the species on this new planet are carnivorous and exeptionaly deadly. Knowing that humanity is currently unable to compete they started running matrix like simulations to kick start our evolution basicly taking us from being those fat people from wall-e and turning us into veteran survivors. Each map would be prepairing us for the ascension to our new and savage home. And that world would be the end game test of survival.
