Caihong Juji

Dossier

"Ragnarok, as harsh as it can be, is also a place of wondrous beauty and fascinating creatures. Among them, the Caihong Juji stands out like a gem. This creature, about the size of a large dog, is a spectacle of nature's artistry. Its plumage, a riot of iridescent colors, shimmers and shifts in the sunlight, a sight that never fails to take my breath away.

The Caihong Juji is not just a feast for the eyes, but also a marvel of agility and grace. I've watched it swoop from tree to tree, its flight pattern similar to that of a Tapejara, if not a tad slower. This creature has metallic claws, presenting Its ability to scale sheer cliffs with the ease of a mountain goat. It is truly an astounding creature.

But what really endears me to the Caihong Juji is its playful, almost impish nature. I met one, who I've since named Diva, as he slowly pulled a sparkling bracelet from my artifact bag. He was so engrossed in his mission that he didn't notice me until I was practically stepping on his paddle of a tail. With a squawk of surprise, he took off, overturning the desk, and leaving me in a fit of laughter.

One day, while Diva was carrying me high above the ground, I caught a glimpse of our reflection in a still pond. For a moment, I thought I saw an angel, the glowing reds and oranges of Diva's feathers spread out like a celestial being with flaming wings. It was a sight to behold, a testament to the beauty of this creature.

Despite its playful demeanor, the Caihong Juji is not one to be taken lightly. When a survivor manages to win its trust, it becomes a formidable ally. Its unique ability to create a shimmer effect with its feathers can render both the dinosaur and the survivor nearly invisible for a few precious moments - a handy trick when you need to make a swift, stealthy exit.

And then there's its fascinating mating ritual. The Caihong Juji is capable of breeding with both tamed and wild dinos. The process involves the male shaking its colorful feathers and emitting a series of calls, with the female deciding whether or not to reciprocate. It's a captivating display that underscores the complexity of this creature's behaviors.

In all my travels and observations, the Caihong Juji remains one of the most unique and enchanting creatures I've encountered on Ragnarok. Its blend of beauty, agility, and playful mischief, coupled with its useful abilities, makes it a truly remarkable specimen in the ARK ecosystem.

As for my bracelet, I've come to accept that I'll likely never see it again. But then again, who needs jewelry when you've got a living, breathing rainbow by your side?"

Wild

The Caihong Juji is a medium, feathered dinosaur known for its vibrant, iridescent plumage. It is a passive creature, preferring to avoid conflict when possible. This would be the largest shoulder mount in ARK and covers the player’s entire back. It is capable of flight and can scale vertical surfaces, making it a versatile companion in the diverse environments of Ragnarok.

Domesticated

When equipped by a player, the Caihong Juji can fly and climb vertical surfaces, with multi-dimensional mid-air maneuverability. It also has the unique ability to shake its colorful and iridescent neck, head, and chest feathers to create a shimmer effect, refracting light around both it and the player, and producing three translucent copies around it for a few seconds.

Behavior

In the wild, the Caihong Juji is skittish and only approaches a player if convinced with something shiny and colorful (Gem, Electronic, Crystal, etc.). It is also capable of breeding with both tamed and wild dinos. Wild Caihong Juji spawn near ‘nests,’ highly fortified mounds which hold resources attractive to the dino. If a nest is approached, any surrounding Caihong Juji will become aggressive. Resources only drop on destruction of the nest.

Appearance

The Caihong Juji is a dinosaur approximately the size of a chimpanzee, with shaggy feathers and a vibrant appearance. Its head, neck, chest, and the inside of its wings display a wide range of iridescent colors, creating a captivating effect as the colors shift. The dinosaur's overall appearance is visually striking, with its colorful head and upper body contrasting against the more muted hues of its lower body and back.

Color Scheme and Regions

The Caihong Juji's colors can vary to any vibrant color, covering the inside of its wings, its neck, head, and chest. Its back and lower body stand in a stark contrast, presenting simple colors, which can appear in muted tones of white, brown, and black.

Drops

Raw Meat, Hide, any item it may have stolen from a player or picked up, these items are placed in a nest if not retrieved.

Possible:
Caihong Juji Feather: This could be a common drop from the Caihong Juji. Given the creature's vibrant and iridescent plumage, these feathers could be used in crafting a variety of items. For example, they could be used to craft a special set of armor that provides a stealth bonus due to the shimmering effect of the feathers.

Caihong Juji Claw: Given the Caihong Juji's metallic claws, this could be a rarer drop. These claws could be used in crafting weapons or tools with a higher durability due to the metallic nature of the claws.

Caihong Juji Scale: Considering the Caihong Juji's ability to scale vertical surfaces, it might have unique scales on its feet that aid in this ability. These scales could be a rare drop and used in crafting climbing gear or equipment that provides a movement speed bonus.

Caihong Juji Eye: The Caihong Juji's eyes might be particularly adapted to spotting shiny objects from a distance. As a very rare drop, these could be used in crafting a unique scope or binoculars that provide a bonus to spotting distant objects or creatures.

Combat

Despite its playful demeanor, the Caihong Juji can hold its own in a fight. Its unique ability to create a shimmer effect with its feathers can render both the dinosaur and the survivor nearly invisible for a few precious moments, providing a tactical advantage in combat. However, the Caihong Juji is not a frontline fighter. Its strength lies in its agility and stealth, making it more suited for hit-and-run tactics or for distracting enemies while other, more robust creatures deal damage.

Taming

The Caihong Juji is a passive tame. It is attracted to shiny and colorful objects, making it a unique challenge to attract for taming. Once tamed, it can be equipped by the player and rides on the player's back.

Taming Strategy: To tame a Caihong Juji, place a shiny object in the far-right slot of your hotbar and approach the creature. When prompted, press the use key (default E) to feed it the object. Be patient, as the taming process may take some time. It's recommended to use ghillie armor to approach the Caihong Juji as it can be skittish.

Utility

  1. Stealth: The Caihong Juji's unique ability to create a shimmer effect with its feathers can hide the dinosaur and the player for a few seconds, making it useful for stealthy approaches or escapes.

  2. Transport: When equipped by a player, the Caihong Juji can fly and climb vertical surfaces, similar to the Tapejara, though it is slightly slower and has slightly less stamina. This makes it a versatile transport option in the diverse environments of Ragnarok.

  3. Mate Attraction: The Caihong Juji is capable of breeding with both tamed and wild dinos, with the process involving them shaking their colorful feathers and calling out, with the female deciding whether or not to breed. This means stats can be pulled from wild dinos.

  4. Resources: Caihong Juji nests can be an extremely valuable source of more rare materials, especially in the early game.

Trivia

  1. The Caihong Juji is inspired by the real dinosaur species discovered in China. Its name means "rainbow with the big crest" in Mandarin, referring to its iridescent feathers. The ARK version of Caihong Juji takes this a step further with shimmering lights.

  2. The Caihong Juji's shimmer ability involves the dino’s ability to rotate each of its feathers in order to constantly barrage an attacker with reflected light and refracted images.

  3. The shining, glowing qualities of the Caihong Juji’s feathers are due to ground up crystals or metals the dino will pepper its coat with.

You probably should call it Caihong Juji, as submissions should be for real world extinct/prehistoric creatures, not inspired by/made up creatures.  That does not mean you can't embellish them (like many of the other submissions); we now have a giant flying insect in the game that was based on a tiny partial fossil (but still called Rhyniognatha).

Seems like a good new dino. Fills a couple niches not yet filled, adds a interesting PVP tactic for short timespan camouflage, plus the burrows would add a nice mix of crystal and possibly even metal to be collected like Beaver Dams with Cementing Paste and Wood

❤️ thank you walle. i think it would be so cool to have an evasive maneuver like that, i feel like it would really help smaller tribes on official
