Description
Smilodon is one of the most famous prehistoric big cats, but when it comes to brute strength and size, it was outcompeted by the Scimitar Cat. This prehistoric feline is seen as the largest big cat discovered yet, and a successful one too. It terrorized the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Central and Northern Asia for almost 5 million years until it was eventually outcompeted by smaller big cat species, the ones that are still around today. Its exceptionally large size meant that the Scimitar Cat required a lot of food to function, thus most likely a highly active predator. The Scimitar Cat bears a resemblance to Smilodon and other sabretooth cats, but its sabre teeth were smaller than those of other species. The Scimitar Cat likely hunted its prey in a similar fashion, however, hunting in a pride and crippling its prey with flesh wounds until it could deliver the killing bite to crush the wind pipe and sever the jugular. Most creatures in the time of the Scimitar Cat’s rule were constantly on the lookout, not knowing when the beast would pounce again.
On Ragnarok
As in real life, the Scimitar Cat lived in a diverse ecosystem, it would easily survive in the multiple environments on Ragnarok. From the murder snow to the desert, the jungle to the highlands, it could inhabit anyplace it chose.
Taming Method
Such a ferocious monster should be approached cautiously. Any survivor spotted by a Scimitar Cat will likely encounter its entire pride, spelling their doom. However, the Scimitar Cat’s vision is surprisingly weak at nightfall, making this the best time to tame one. A full set of Ghillie armor will further decrease the odds of being spotted by a Scimitar Cat. Once you are confident you won’t be spotted, sneak up to your Scimitar Cat of choice and see what food it is asking for. They will ask for either one of the Rockwell Recipes, one type of Kibble, Giant Bee Honey, or a form of meat, including mutton, jerky, and regular and fish meats, cooked or raw. Once you know what they want, initiate the tame with the feed. Do note that their food goes down very slowly, similar to a Mantis or Basilosaurus. Consume some Bug Repellant to help time your feeds properly. Delayed feeds will result in loss of taming effectiveness.
Although this seems like a normal passive feed, it isn’t. The Scimitar Cat will roar to call its pride over to you to eat as well, yet you are the food to them. Like claiming an OSD on the Extinction DLC, you will have to kill these Scimitar Cat “hostiles” before they ruin your chances to properly feed your target. However, you cannot be assisted by your tames. You must kill the hostiles yourself. The higher the level of Scimitar Cat you are taming, the bigger the pride you will have to kill. Prides can range from 2 to 10 Scimitar Cats at a time, and for every feed, a new pride will spawn in. Do note that the other pride members are untamable in this minigame. Continue the process until your Scimitar Cat is fully tamed.
Domesticated
Once you have a Scimitar Cat, you have a new and improved Thylacoleo. Like the Thylacoleo, the Scimitar Cat can scale massive cliffs, large Redwood trees, and base walls, and pounce as well. They also gather massive quantities of hide, chitin/keratin, and meat, which the Scimitar Cat has weight reduction on. Unlike the Thylacoleo, the Scimitar Cat takes equal reduced fall damage. Where the Thylacoleo takes more fall damage when jumping off a cliff rather than walking off, a Scimitar Cat does not. Also, the Scimitar Cat’s saddle, unlocked at level 60, seats 1 additional person and both allow for weapon equipment. The Scimitar Cat’s further abilities as a protective pride animal are even more incredible, and, undoubtedly, boss worthy!
Attacks & Abilities
Left Click – Bite (inflicts a bleed over 8 seconds that can stack)
Right Click – Climb (allows the Scimitar Cat to climb but slowly drains stamina)
C – Might Roar (the Scimitar Cat and its allies can build up their melee to release in one massive attack by the ridden Scimitar Cat. The roar has a cooldown)
Ctrl – Enraged Roar (all wild creatures–from Dodos to Gigas–in range will attack each other but ignore the Scimitar Cat for 20 seconds. The roar has a cooldown)
Space – Pounce (will pin smaller creatures to the ground but does no damage. Tap space again to release. Excellent for taming smaller creatures without a trap)
Why choose the Scimitar Cat?
ARK is known for its diverse group of dinosaurs, but more recently extinct creatures hold equal significance. The Thylacoleo rivals the Sabertooth already in the game, but another big cat should be included. ARK really just has one specific feline–the Thylacoleo–whereas the Sabertooth actually has a diverse membership to it. The Scimitar Cat would be an excellent addition, and species wise, Homotherium serum would be the go-to Scimitar Cat. I also believe that since climbing creatures aren’t allowed in Boss Arenas, the Scimitar Cat’s climbing abilities should not be automatic, but like a Rock Drake, should require manual engagement with the Right Click as mentioned above. This way, it’s ability to climb would simply be disabled by the game in an arena as is the use of cryopods in or near the Tek Cave, allowing the Scimitar Cat to enter all Boss Arenas.
