Defense Velos

From what I have seen and read, I know that velonasaurs have a damage cap when put in turret mode, which does not scale with melee past a certain point. My question is, is there a way to bypass turret mode so velos can still do good damage? For instance, incumbering them and just placing them on aggressive, or will that be the same as turret mode? Do the needles always do minimal damage when not mounted or is it only in turret mode? I'm currently breeding velos for base defense or OSDs so that's why I'm wondering.

Should I stop pumping melee damage after a certain amount? Go strictly stamina? Encumber them when around my base so they don't have to be in turret mode? Just not sure what I should do of it I should just stick with the damage cap and keep them in turret mode around the base.
