  1. Welcome back coastal critters! These past two weeks, we accidentally left the oven on... but thankfully snappin and NISIS decided to use it to really cook! Sphyrna splashed-landed into ASA's oceans, alongside some reworked animations for Ambulocetus. But that's not the only thing we're reworking on the blubbery puppy, Ambulocetus is receiving a complete visual overhaul/TLC! We also have new concept art to share: reworked Blue Whale and Pterygotus feature pieces and a new Sunken variant: the Sunken Karkinos! Enough hyping though, keep reading to see all the amazing things we have to share! If you're new to our little community, this paragraph is for you! You're probably wondering what this "Sunken Scoop" thing even is! It's essentially our fun way of sharing updates on modding progress, in a community-crunch style format. We try to release one every two weeks! If this is your first time diving into the deep end, we are a dedicated team of individuals who are looking to spruce up the ocean biome in the same way that Scorched Earth offered a unique, biome specific challenge to survival. New creatures, resources, structures, items and more, all set on a huge custom map, we're looking to give ARK's oceans the TLC they deserve! The main goal is to bridge that huge gap between early and late game ocean exploration, and make it much more viable and more fun to live a life beneath the waves! This is unofficial content and is only related to our mod. It is in no way related with the official game and its content releases. Let's dive into the scoop! SPHYRNA HAS ASCENDED! Stop! Hammer time! Sphyrna was released in ASA last week, so it's the perfect time for a creature feature! With its literal hammer-head, it can smash clean through any rocky resources beneath the waves, all while swimming laps around the sluggish Dunkleosteus! While it has less weight reduction than the giant placoderm, an additional ability to detect oil and metal nodes with electroreception makes it an excellent undersea gatherer! In addition, its rough skin is the perfect texture for filing down materials, leading most survivors to turn its saddle into a mobile smithy! Sphyrna are simple KO tames. Just fire some tranq arrows into them, then feed them meat or Regular kibble. They much prefer a nice cut of fish meat over prime from a land creature though! TSW'S FIRST TLC I'm not the first, nor will I be the last to say this. NISIS cooked so hard on this thing. After TSW released to ASA, we received a lot of feedback about our loveable land whale that encouraged us to revisit its design. After adjusting its mechanics so that they weren't so powerful, we decided to update its visuals to be more in line with ASA! We've given Ambulocetus way more features that link it to its real world counterpart, while still keeping some of its more adorable ARK-ified traits like its blowhole-nose. Honestly though, there isn't much to say about the blubbery puppy when a picture paints a thousand words! Look at NISIS' amazing modelling work! In addition to the updated look, Ambulocetus is also getting a brand new saddle! Why not bring some ARK II inspired saddle designs to ASA, with some hollow-bone storage compartments and prehistoric-themed decals! While all these features are only visual, they sure are awesome to look at! Ambulocetus' New Groove This part of the TLC deserves its own section! Alongside Sphyrna releasing, snappin also worked on overhauled animations! Below are some comparisons between the old and the new. While usually it's bad to have too many cooks in the kitchen, snappin and NISIS working together for this TLC is truly something amazing! In order of appearance, we have the reworked Level Up and Metabolic Rush animations, then the brand new eating animation! There's also a few more for you to discover in game! NEW CONCEPT ART Blue Whale Now that is one big boy! ZCI has reworked the Blue Whale's feature piece to really sell the absolute enormity of the lad! It's not everyday you can see a creature that dwarfs a Leedsichthys. In addition, you can even see growths of algae and barnacles on the giant whale, which are part of its organic-Tek-Stryder-like mechanics! Pterygotus You'll have to get your forklift/Pterygotus certification to ride this beast! Once again, ZCI has delivered another incredible piece of invertebrate art! The reworked feature piece serves to showcase Pterygotus with much more detail and personality! But who's that in the corner fighting this giant eurypterid... Sunken Karkinos HOLY CRAB! After a very convincing presentation from ZCI, we decided it would be in our best interests to give the Karkinos a classic TSW themed rework! Sunken Karkinos will be able to jump far better than its cavernous cousin while underwater, and can switch up its style of fighting by alternating between a pair of slashing or crushing claws! And with some inspiration from Kraken's Better Dinos, we're giving it a small platform saddle as well! In addition, we're going to try our hardest to allow it to grab aquatic creatures! COMMUNITY CORNER There still seems to be quite a lot of buzz in the ARK community regarding TSW! It's been really awesome seeing how much love has been coming our way! If you have anything you'd like to share, feel free to send over some screenshots, artwork/fanart, videos or anything in between! There's a submissions channel in our Discord, or you can tag us @ARKSunken or with the hashtag #sunkenscoop on Twitter! Clips and Videos Creator: PANDA_WZ A wonderful video from the French side of our community that showcases the taming and abilities of the first three creatures in the mod! That's all for this edition of the Sunken Scoop! Certainly lots to be excited about in TSW's future. We can't wait to release the visual part of Ambulocetus' TLC! If you want to see more TSW content, why not come hang out in our discord! Have a wonderful timezone! If this is your first time seeing TSW, check out the links below to find out more! Please note that if you want to play our mod, you need both the map and creature mod active. Discord: https://discord.gg/BAkvgc7 Twitter: https://twitter.com/ArkSunken Map Mod (ASE): https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2182740759 Creature Mod (ASE): https://steamcommunity.com/workshop/filedetails/?id=2182770728 Creature Mod (ASA): https://legacy.curseforge.com/ark-survival-ascended/mods/the-sunken-world-additions
  2. Welcome back ascended aquatics! Who ordered the three consecutive weeks special? It's certainly been a very exciting past week for the TSW team! To all the new faces, welcome to the Sunken Scoop! This our unofficial version of the Community Crunch, releasing every 2-4 weeks (though we've been really good at keeping it at a fortnightly pace!), where we show off what we've been working on! So what have we been working on? Well, remember the WIP of the cute little anky-turtle in Scoop 14? Because thanks to NISIS, Liaoningosaurus' model is complete! Read on to see the loveable lug in all its glory! We have even more content in the works, but we've been so busy following our release on Ascended it's not ready for showcase just yet. Stay tuned for the next scoop because things are really scaling up to be something awesome! LIAONINGOSAURUS MODEL REVEAL I LOVE HIM GIVE ME 100 PLEASE! As mentioned above, this absolutely incredible model is all thanks to NISIS! We can't stress enough how much applause you should give this absolute wizard! Liaoningosaurus is planned to be a defensive shoulder pet! With one of these tiny ankylosaurs on your shoulder, you'll receive no ranged damage from behind! In addition, their feisty attitudes keep pesky thieves at bay. That's right, your new best friend scares off Ichthyornis and Pegomastax! You'll be able to tame one of these by dragging it some delicious fish corpses! And don't worry, it won't be as painful as Hesperornis taming! COMMUNITY CORNER After the big release last week, we have quite a few exciting things to share with you from our community! We love seeing what you get up to while playing TSW, so please feel free to share! We totally aren't narcissitic or anything. We accept screenshots, artwork/fanart, videos and anything in between! There's a submissions channel in our Discord, or you can tag us @ARKSunken or with the hashtag #sunkenscoop on Twitter! Clips and Videos Creator: DarkEdgeTV DarkEdgeTV has given Ambulocetus and Anomalocaris (our favourite problem child) excellent showcases in these two videos. Taming, abilities, utility and more are shown off in the videos. Be sure to keep an eye out for her Henodus showcase when that releases! Creator: PlayiNkZ Hopping over to our Spanish community with this feature! PlayiNkZ gives a brief rundown of each creature currently in the mod! There's also some sneak peeks at the WIP creatures hiding in the mod's files! Definitely worth a watch, even if you have to turn on translated subtitles like I did! Creator: Freyn If you're looking for more mods to try in ASA, this video is for you! Freyn shows off some excellent creations made by fellow modders, and also recommends a somewhat unknown one called "The Sunken World"... I wonder what content that one has to offer? That's all for this edition of the Sunken Scoop! We hope you're just as excited about seeing Liaoningosaurus in game as we are! We genuinely can't wait to tame ourselves an adorable ankylosaur. If you're looking for more TSW content, come hang out in our discord! Have a wonderful timezone! If this is your first time seeing TSW, check out the links below to find out more! 3. Hang on, today isn't a Wednesday... Welcome to a very special edition of the Sunken Scoop! Let's cut right to the chase, we're out on ASA on all platforms! You can find us here: https://legacy.curseforge.com/ark-survival-ascended/mods/the-sunken-world-additions! Read on to find out what's included in the mod's initial release! RELEASED CONTENT First things first, a massive thank you to snappin for all the work he's done getting TSW Additions ready for release! The guy has been a one man army when it comes to coding for the mod, so he deserves all the praise. The TSW Team wouldn't be the same without you dude! Onto the creatures though! As we've been teasing over the past few weeks, the current version of the mod contains Ambulocetus, Anomalocaris and Henodus! Until the TSW map releases, all our creatures will spawn in temporary areas on the Island. We've made a couple changes to some of the mechanics of these creatures compared to ASE, so read on to find out more! Ambulocetus Talk about a whale with a pep in its step! This blubbery boy can commonly be found lounging around, but it's not as lazy as it appears! Its unique metabolism allows it to kick its systems into overdrive, moving at greater speeds at the cost of its food reserves! And much like any other dog with a dolphin tail, they love a bit of affection from their owners! Petting this loveable lug gives your nearby creatures a bonus to their experience gain, and it's able to keep up with your pack far better than a Lystrosaurus! We're planning on adding an oxygen stat to Ambulocetus later down the line. We have a lot of speedsters in the mod, and we want to have a way to ensure each has their own pros and cons. Think Andrewsarchus/Casteroides base level of oxygen. Enough to last them a good amount of time underwater at high levels, but they'll still have to come up for air every now and then. To get yourself your own whale-wolf, knock it out and feed it meat! They're quite partial to Regular Kibble too. Ambulocetus can be found all over the snow biome! Anomalocaris SCUBA stands for Self Contained Underwater Breathing Anomalocaris, right? This little parasite is more than just a nuisance, as its unique choice of a blood based diet means it has some adaptations a survivor can exploit! Humans are well known for their inability to breathe underwater, but with an Anomalocaris on your back, you'll find that you'll never run out of O2! These Cambrian-era predators seem to have an uncanny ability to regulate blood oxygen levels as they feed, making them the perfect primitive SCUBA tanks! In addition, these adorable little bugs have the perfect sized heads to wear man made hats. This, coupled with the lifesteal that their attacks have, makes a swarm of Anomalocaris a decently powerful addition to your underwater arsenal! Anomalocaris' taming mechanic is temporarily changed from its ASE version. Previously, to tame yourself a scuba shrimp, you'd have to weaken it to the point where it would latch onto you, put narcotics in your last hotbar slot, then allow it to slurp up your torpor-laced blood to get it to knock itself out. In ASA, the latching and unique KO mechanics worked completely fine in testing, but after the fact Anomalocaris would become completely unable to be interacted with. This certainly made feeding it difficult, in addition to the fact that they'd just exist in stasis forever. For now, Anomalocaris is a conventional KO tame until a fix can be found. They love to eat anything blood-based! Ammonite Bile, Leech Blood and Blood Packs are their preferred food, in that order. Anomalocaris can be found in the ocean. Henodus Now that's what I call a houseboat! Henodus is more than just a giant pancake, this early game creature is the perfect way to explore the waves from the comfort of your own home! Functioning just like a raft that doesn't draw the attention of the boat-munching Leedsichthys, you can safely sail the seas on this turtle-lookalike's shell. In addition, it can use its giant flippers for more than just swimming, as it's also very proficient at digging! By burrowing into the ground, your Henodus takes drastically reduced damage and produces air bubbles in an area around itself if underwater! This allows you and your tames to breathe in your house below the waves. Even more useful is the fact that this property also extends to any tames-to-be that decided to wander into the water in the middle of getting KO'd! This peaceful plesiosaur relative is an herbivorous passive tame, feed it any kind of berry to convince it to be your friend. I've heard that they really flip out for Regular Kibble too! Henodus can be found in rivers and lakes. Henodus was perfect as it was, no balance changes to this loveable placodont! As we are still a heavy WIP, please make sure to report any bugs you might find! We did our best to stomp out all the ones we could find, but this is ARK. Some are bound to pop up when we least expect! COMING SOON So, what's next? We still need to upscale the models for all our ASE creatures, including these 3, but after that it's time for some new creatures! You've seen our WIPs of what we have in store, so we hope you're just as excited as we are for the future of TSW in ASA! During the upscaling process, we are planning on having some small visual TLCs as well! We'll keep you posted as things develop! YEAHHH WE'RE FINALLY OUT ON ASA!!! Thanks for all your support and understanding as we've worked on the port! Have fun with the newly released creatures, we've got a ton more planned (as you can probably tell by all the previous scoops) so keep sticking around to see what's in store! Also, come to our discord to share in the ASA experience of TSW. We want to see what you guys get up to with our creatures (and maybe feature it in our community corner too)! 4. Welcome back aquatic a-fish-ionados! After a long two weeks out at sea, we've reeled in a monster... a giant edition of the Sunken Scoop! So let's catch you up on what we've been working on for the past fortnight (and why we're saying more fishing puns than usual). We've added 8 new custom creatures to our roster! While such a huge number sounds ambitious, the new additions aim to tackle something that is lacking in ARKs oceans, ambient life! While oceanic giants are spectacular in their own right, a lot of feedback and requests we've gotten have asked us to add more of the little guys. There's no sense to a ocean TLC without adding wildlife that makes the waters feel less like a deadzone no matter where you go. These new additions are all going to be their own animals, unlike the many fish schools we have on ASE (and will bring to the map in ASA), and will all have their own roles to play when tamed! Read on to find out more! I THOUGHT THE ROSTER WAS FULL... You've probably heard us say many a time that our roster of over 40 custom creatures is full to the brim, and we aren't able to add in community requested creatures... so what gives adding in a boatload of fish? The answer is quite simple. Adding in a fish is a lot less resource intensive than our more ambitious creatures like the Wyrms, Omnidens and so on! They tend to have only a handful of animations, are generally easier to model, and are relatively easier to code! In addition, they make for excellent ambience that makes the ocean feel more alive! With that explanation out of the way, let's move on to the hook of this scoop, what do all them fish do? CATCH OF THE DAY As said above, each of these fish will be separate "entities", like the Coelacanth or Lepidotes. In addition to their individuality though, each will have a simple niche that they fill! For ease of workload, the abilities these fish have will either be underwater-ified existing mechanics or simple, but interesting ideas. The thought process is that these little guys will be fun/useful additions to your school, but won't steal the show from the main mascots of the mod! Also, please note that the ideas we're proposing aren't set in stone, and could be subject to change. We've had you waiting with baited breath for long enough, let's introduce the first fish! Calamostoma Excuse this fella's cold attitude, it's been asked "why the long face" way too many times! Meet Calamostoma, the arctic-dwelling, brine-blasting pipefish! These prehistoric seahorse relatives live in the cold waters around the Ice Caps, protecting themselves from predators with an icy-blast of superchilled water. Tamed ones make for perfect guard dogs to slow the flow of enemies through your defenses. Brinewing who? Artwork by ZCI5250. Doryaspis That fish is looking sharp! The point of adding Doryaspis was to add a bit more danger to the map! These spikey little scavengers live deep in the trenches of the map. Be warned, their serrated chin-spike and pectoral fins are more than just for show, a "swim-by" from one of these fish will really leave a nasty mark! Tamed Doryaspsis are like undersea Dimorphodons, directly attacking the rider instead of the creature! In addition, wild Doryaspis have a small chance to drop a very awesome sword skin! Artwork by ZCI5250. Haikouichthys Fish for the brine pools. An ancient, transparent friend. The Haiku-ichthys! Pretty much everything you need to know about the Haikou is in the opening line, but something that was missed is that these ghostly fellows will passively produce bio-toxin over time! With Cnidaria being so much rarer on ASA, perhaps a school of these Cambrian-era fish will solve your Shocking Tranq Dart deficiency! Artwork by RexMyPet. Oceanic Sunfish No thoughts, fish empty. A unique fish from the modern era, the Oceanic Sunfish is here to brighten up TSW's seas! Functioning like a fun-sized Leedsichthys, a sizeable school of these will allow you to scrape enough fish meat to feed a whole village! All you'll need to round them up from the open ocean is their favourite food, bio toxin! Artwork by ZCI5250. Stenoprotome We've been trying to reach you about your Steno's extended warranty. The headgear on these fellows is more than just for show, as they make for the perfect handlebars to have them ferry you around! Slightly smaller than the average survivor, these colourful reef-dwellers are strong enough to drag the weight of a person and still keep swimming at full speed. Great for moving around your base with ease! Seaglide who? Artwork by WaterWitch. Tek Coelacanth An old vanilla staple gets a major version update! And unlike a Tek Parasaur these guys don't need to breathe, making them the perfect underwater element dust farms! We would like their sizes to be inheritable so that you can breed some absolutely colossal fish! However, please note that this role could be subject to change due to the fickle nature of ARK's code! We do have some other ideas for a replacement niche, which we will reveal if ARK decides to... well, ARK us :p. Artwork by ZCI5250. Tek Gebrayelichthys Gibby fish. I ain't writing that long ass name again. The nosejob isn't just for show either! These fish will use their squeegee attachments to good use, cleaning up and repairing structures for you! Artwork by RexMyPet. Tek Trilobite Man this roomba looks kinda weird... A robotic clean up crew of these fellows will do more than keep your base tidy, because they can convert your random garbage into valuable resources! While less powerful than the producing powers of a Gacha, a constant flow of valuables isn't something to scoff at! Artwork by ZCI5250. WHERE'S THE ASA NEWS? We are super close to the ASA release! There isn't much to report compared to the last scoop, just more really annoying, game breaking bugs that we are trying to stomp out. Almost unsurprisingly, the culprit is the loveable problem child, Anomalocaris. We hate to be those guys just spamming "soon", but we're working on alternatives if the major bugs aren't able to be fixed! COMMUNITY CORNER While we have plenty of content to share, we'd love to be able to share some things from our community! We accept screenshots, artwork, videos and anything in between, and we'd love to feature your work in the next scoop! There's a submissions channel in our Discord, or you can tag us @ARKSunken or with the hashtag #sunkenscoop on Twitter! That's all for this issue of the Sunken Scoop, thanks for tuning in! 5. Welcome back sunken survivors! Another two weeks has passed, which means it's Sunken Scoop time! With all the work we've been doing to get the ASA release out, alongside work for brand new creatures, January has really flown by! While we've been working, we've received quite a few recurring questions about ASA, so we'll answer the most common ones and share off how work is going too! In addition, we've also got a brand new model (WIP) to share off. Read on to see the model reveal of the amazingly loveable Liaoningosaurus! PREPPING FOR ASA SoonTM. No seriously, we mean it! In the past week we've been hard at work identifying all the current bugs with the test branch, and are now in the process of getting everything fixed up for the public release! You best believe we're going to squash every single one... buuuut knowing ARK you may run into some when we do release (and if you do, please report them)! As the public release is getting closer and closer, we've been asked quite a few common questions, so we thought we should confirm our plans through the scoop so everyone is on the same page! Will TSW be free to play? Very early on, we decided we'd always be free to play. The premium mod program seems very promising, however we aren't about to go and make our mod, which we've offered free of charge since the beginning, suddenly locked behind a paywall. If we do end up making paid content it will never impact the main mods, and will most likely be side content or completely unrelated to TSW. No plans for that currently though! Will TSW be cross-platform? Yes! We want everyone to be able to play our mod, however file size may end up being an issue later down the line. Currently in ASE we only have two mods, the map and an all encompassing additions mod that contains all the resources, creatures, etc. However, cross-platform mods have an upper size limit for each mod, as consoles don't have the same storage space as PCs. We may have to subdivide the mod further on for ASA depending on those constraints. What kinds of biomes will be on the map? We went in depth on some of the biomes you can expect to see in Sunken Scoop 8, but to summarise; you can expect to see almost everything from real world and science fantasy ocean habitats! From natural areas like coral reefs, hydrothermal vents and seagrass meadows, to more fictional biomes inspired by other media like the Seagrass Island and the Shroom Glades, the ocean is going to be a lot more interesting to explore! You may also encounter the remnants of an ancient civilisation that used to dwell on the ARK... What creatures are coming next after Ambulo/Anomalo/Henodus? As mentioned in previous scoops, we're currently in the process of upgrading and upscaling the models of creatures previously in the ASE branch. This is in addition to the new models we're making for yet-to-be-revealed creatures! Our current plans for creatures after the three releasing in the first wave of the public branch are on a "release them as they're ready" basis. We may do "pack" releases like how we did back in ASE, or you may just see a slow trickle as we complete their coding, animations and so on. However, snappin is our only ADK coder, so we are heavily bottlenecked in that regard. If you know anyone experienced in the ARK Dev Kit, let them know TSW is looking for em! LIAONINGOSAURUS MODEL TEASER Is... is this what love feels like? NISIS has truly gone above and beyond for this little ankylosaur turtle, and we can't wait to see it in game! These adorable little dinosaurs will function as a protective shoulder pet! Just give them a little harness and Liaoningosaurus can piggyback on your survivor, protecting you from thieving creatures and ranged damage to your backside! (Side note, if you know of any amazing animators please send them our way, we really want to make sure this guy feels alive when it comes to ASA) COMMUNITY CORNER In a surprising turn of events... nah just kidding still empty over here! Please feel free to submit something yourself (we're so desperate please submit something for us to share)! Screenshots, artwork, videos and so on are all fair game, and we'd love to feature your work in the next scoop! There's a submissions channel in our Discord, or you can tag us @ARKSunken or with the hashtag #sunkenscoop on Twitter! That's all for this issue of the Sunken Scoop, thanks for tuning in! 6. "And then he turned himself into a remaster, funniest thing I've ever seen!" Heyo, ZCI5250 here! You may recognise me as one of the artists for The Sunken World. Our beloved amphibious writer ashgcy is off on vacation at the moment, so I will be your host for this edition of the Sunken Scoop! In this scoop, we will be showing off some sneaky screenshots of our delightful aquatic friends frolicking about in ASA! These were taken on our private testing branch, and some things may change with the official release! As mentioned in the previous scoop, we do not have a planned release date. However, we have gotten past the major hurdles that came with porting, so all that's left to do is playtesting and bug fixing. As long as the creatures dont come up with another escape plan, you can expect to see TSW Additions on the in-game Mods tab very soonTM! If this is your first time diving into the deep end, we are a dedicated team of individuals who are looking to spruce up the ocean biome in the same way that Scorched Earth offered a unique, biome specific challenge to survival. With new creatures, resources, structures, items and more, all set on a huge custom map, we're looking to give ARK's oceans the TLC they deserve! The main goal is to bridge that huge gap between early and late game ocean exploration, and make it much more viable and more fun to live a life beneath the waves! This is unofficial content and is only related to our mod. It is in no way related to the official game and its content releases. Let's dive into the scoop! ASA SCREENSHOTS While it isn't ready to be played just yet, we do have a couple of teasers for what to expect in the TSW Additions mod's ASA debut! From the living SCUBA tank Anomalocaris to the gentle giant Henodus, we mainly focused on porting over creatures which would be greatly beneficial to aquatic gameplay. Oh, the chunky proto-whale Ambulocetus managed to sneak its way in too, but we decided to let it stay. I mean, how could you say no to those puppy dog eyes? Anomalocaris What would TSW be without these iconic and (oddly) adorable arthropods? While feisty in the wild, tamed Anomalocaris will gladly provide survivors with oxygen while underwater... at the cost of slurping up some of your blood! Just be prepared to repair your chestpiece every now and then, their graspers are mighty strong for their size! Henodus Paddling gracefully through the billowing bogs, one can find the charismatic Henodus! These odd sauropterygians are an incredibly important tame for a life beneath the waves. When submerged, a Henodus will release air bubbles from its back, which you can build on to create an early game underwater home! Ambulocetus And last (for now) but not least, we have the Ambulocetus! Found up north in frigid waters, these peculiar mammals are a perfect exploratory mount! Not only are they able to traverse land and sea, but they can even invigorate themselves with a metabolic rush that makes them move and attack faster! You can even pet them, which is not only abso-friggin-lutely adorable, but will also give allied tames a boost in XP gain! COMMUNITY CORNER We haven't received any submissions for the community corner this week, but we're certainly keeping an eye out for anything you want to send us! In the meantime, please feel free to reach out to us yourself! Send us anything from screenshots, artwork, videos and the so on, and we can feature your work in the next scoop! The submissions channel in our Discord is always open, or you can tag us @ARKSunken with #sunkenscoop on Twitter! That's all for this issue of the Sunken Scoop, thanks for tuning in! We hope you're just as excited to play with TSW on ASA as we are, and we will have more to share in the next one! Come to our discord to share in the excitement, or just to hang out! 8. Woah! We haven't seen you since last year! Cheesy jokes aside though, it's time for another edition of the Sunken Scoop! Since we last saw you, after we shook off the holiday laziness, we've been working hard on the big ASA release! While we don't have a release date (for fear of summoning the curse that haunts all ARK releases) expect to see the creature mod very soon! In addition to the update on our porting status, we've also got some new pieces of concept art for you! The lovely Liaoningosaurus has gotten a redesign, but that's not the only thing that's gotten a facelift! It's a well known fact that many aquatic vanilla creatures are in dire need of TLCs... and Sunken Plesiosaur and Pelagornis' new concept art will give them the love they deserve! WHAT'S THE PROGRESS ON ASA? We've gotten a lot of questions recently about when we'll be coming to ASA. So we thought we should report that progress is going good! Currently we're in the process of upscaling all our old models from the ASE branch to the same resolution as ASA, alongside porting over the code for our creatures. This upscaling is only needed for our previous models though, we've been making everything else with ASA in mind, so once all the older creatures have been polished up, it'll be smooth sailing! While our team is quite large, Snappin is the backbone of getting things in game, as he's our the one in charge of all the creature work in the ARK Dev Kit. He's the only coder on the team, which means the brunt of the workload has been on him. We're definitely looking for more coders to help spread out the work though, so if you know anyone who's experienced in the ADK, send them over to the applications section in our discord (links at the bottom of the scoop)! Our release plan is still the same, creatures/resources/items first, map later. In terms of progress on the map, we're currently doing tons of research on the real world counterparts to our biomes to provide a strong foundation for some massive science-fantasy worldbuilding! The Sunken World in ASA is going to be amazing! As mentioned above, expect to see TSW Additions on the mods list in the very near future! LIAONINGOSAURUS REDESIGN We took "New Year, new me" quite literally for Liaoning! We felt that the pint-sized ankylosaur needed a few tweaks to its design to really sell its semi aquatic nature! This loveable little turtle lookalike makes for the perfect bulletproof backpack, carry it around to deflect any ranged damage from behind! Despite their small size, they're incredibly feisty, so having one on your back will ward off any small thieving pests too! NISIS, the newest member of our team, is the one behind this adorable visual TLC. SUNKEN PELAGORNIS CONCEPT What would TSW be without some feathery fishing companions? The Sunken Pelagornis is the best bird to bring on your next oceanic adventure, and it's a lot less scared to get its feathers wet compared to its vanilla counterpart! You heard that right, S. Pelagornis can not only paddle on the surface, but divebomb and give chase to any piscine snacks below the waves! And any excess fish that you catch can be put on its bill, literally! A pelican-like throat pouch, alongside some very large baskets on its saddle, can store up to 4 fish at a time for easy transportation across the map! While you fish right off the back of your buoyant bird, save the prized fish for your ornamental ponds! Your troughs will be overflowing with enough fish meat to feed a whole army of picky piscivores! The feature piece above and the bonus sketches below are thanks to ZCI5250! SUNKEN PLESIOSAURUS CONCEPT Gone are the days of the plesiosaur having a face only a mother could love! In the move to ASA, we'll be giving Sunken Plesiosaurus' model a much needed visual TLC and will be improving its mechanics to make it a much less overshadowed tame! In ASE we already gave S. Plesiosaurs a much kinder temperament, only attacking players if attacked first, but we felt these aquatic giants needed a bit more love! Expect your S. Plesiosaur to be much more manoeuvrable than their vanilla counterparts, with an added dash attack and the ability to quickly turn and bite in the direction your camera is facing! Aquatic combat can get incredibly floaty at times, and giant creatures with a low turning radius make it a lot less fun to try to hit moving targets. The S. Plesiosaur will still be able to utilise a platform as well, however the added weight will prevent you from using the dash attack. Hopefully the changes we make will allow it to become a much more viable tame! Artwork thanks to ZCI5250. COMMUNITY CORNER The Corner is open! Here's some fan submissions from all you wonderful supporters of the mod! Feel free to submit something yourself! Screenshots, artwork, videos and so on are all fair game, and we'd love to feature your work in the next scoop! There's a submissions channel in our discord, or you can tag us @ARKSunken with #sunkenscoop on Twitter! Artwork Tylosaurus Fan-Art by Fug1 A lovely fan rendition of Tylosaurus' old design with some ice armour to match! That's all for this issue of the Sunken Scoop, thanks for tuning in! Big things coming in 2024 for TSW! We can't wait to share the excitement with you all! Have a wonderful timezone! If this is your first time seeing TSW, check out the links below to find out more! 9. Welcome back festive fish! And Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and Seasons Greetings to you all! Looking back as we come near the end of 2023, it's truly been a wonderful year for all things Sunken! It's been so humbling to see how many more people have joined our little server and shown their excitement and interest in our project! A massive thank you go to you, our community, for all the wonderful support, videos, artwork, screenshots and love that you give us when you share how you feel about our project! Sappy, end of year thoughts aside though, what would Christmas be without a gift? While progress has slowed a little going into the holiday period, we've got another ASA model to share with you, the Marine Iguana! In addition, we'll be doing a creature feature on the top dog theropod of TSW, Altispinax! We're also including a section to look back at all the stuff we've done this year, in case you missed some of the previous scoops and to really give 2023 a proper TSW-themed send off! MARINE IGUANA SNEAK PEEK Your search for the perfect early game companion ends here! When your Raptor is too scared to get its feet wet, and your Parasaur is too picky to eat salty seaweed, this loveable lug of a lizard has your back! The Marine Iguana will be the premier semi-aquatic mount of early TSW survival! These giant lizards may seem lazy when they're lounging under the tropical sun, but they're more than ready to dart off in a flash! These starter tames are able to gather a healthy abundance of seaweed and can protect you from most medium sized predators with a powerful whip of their tails. Definitely an invaluable way to start off your journey on the Sunken shores! Massive thanks go to Nitz for his work bringing the Marine Iguana to life! And for those of you interested in a little hint to TSW's lore, these docile reptiles are commonly used by tribes all around the archipelago as an introduction to taming the wildlife. Mastering taming is key to surviving on the ARKs, and it's a lot safer to go after a skittish herbivore as your first choice than a giant predator! New arrivals to the ARK network are subjected to a "rite of passage" where they have to successfully domesticate a Marine Iguana before they can be trusted to survive on their own! ALTISPINAX CREATURE FEATURE This theropod seems to have narcissistically declared itself as your favourite TSW creature... Altispinax is the self imposed ruler of the surface regions, and is one of the strongest semi-aquatic tames available in the ASE branch of the mod. But what was the behind the scenes production like for the High Spined General! One of Altispinax's most iconic traits is its roar, which has the ability to dispel the pack bonuses of any nearby pack animals. We decided very early on in its development that we needed a solid counter to pack tactics. Pack creatures in ARK are powerful and fun... unless you're on the receiving end. Creatures with high enough pack bonuses are very frustrating to kill, even with tames waaay above their weight class (looking at you Artifact of the Cunning cave!). And after WC gave the most common creature in the ocean a pack bonus, we knew a proper anti-pack creature was sorely required! While the anti-pack creature niche was solid, executing the mechanics was a little bit bumpy. In early testing, while the debuff that Altispinax applied successfully removed pack-related effects like Pack Mate, Pack Leader and gang bonuses, after it ended the bonuses wouldn't come back! Another key part of Altispinax's kit is its slowing bite. From the start, we knew we didn't want this to be another bleed creature. Bleed was a great mechanic when it was first introduced, powerful against large tames but rare enough that it wasn't oppressive. However, it's been a long time since the first bleed creatures, and now a decent chunk of ARK's creature roster can bleed their foes, and we didn't want to add to the oversaturated pile. However, coming up with what to replace the bleed with had us stumped. We tossed up a variety of ideas, from an RTS mode to an ability to shoot fish-based projectiles, before finally settling on the slowing effect. Underwater combat can be quite floaty at times, so being able to slow down an opponent is invaluable if you don't want to be swimming in circles! Thankfully, the Crippled debuff was much friendlier on the code than Altispinax's roar! TSW'S 2023 It has truly been a very busy year for TSW! 2023 started with us releasing a huge update that added in Ambulocetus and the model for the Sea Scale Armour. After a few months of bug fixes and balance changes, we then added 3 more creatures too! In late April, Altispinax, Henodus and Materpiscis made their debut on TSW, along with an enormous Seagrass Plains biome below the Ice Caps in the northeast. Then in late August, we released one of our largest updates to the mod! Sunken Spino Coral Golem and Sea Urchins swam onto the scene in the brand new the Tropical Archipelago biome, alongside returning features like currents and revamps to the map's environments and resources. In addition, we even added some custom music themes for morning, noon and night! And that's not even mentioning the start of the Sunken Scoop way back in early August! Crazy to think that our little team has been running it for over 4 months, and we're really excited to showcase a whole YEAR of scoops in 2024! See below for a recap of all the scoops! Links are provided if you want to check back on any you missed too! Sunken Scoop 1 introduced the scoop, revealed the winners of our creature vote and added new creatures to the roster Sunken Scoop 2 shared concept art of various creatures on the roster and showcased Edestus' model Sunken Scoop 3 brought with it the Tropics Update and all of its new creatures and features Sunken Scoop 4 showed off model progress for WIP creatures and gave a behind-the-scenes look of Anomalocaris' development Sunken Scoop 5 showcased even more model reveals and a look into the devkit for Edestus' flaming attacks Sunken Scoop 6 was where the plan for ASA was revealed, alongside concept art for Magma Turtle Sunken Scoop 7 revealed updated concept art for Thalassocnus and Tyrant Shrimp Sunken Scoop 8 was an almost documentary-like exploration of all the new biomes coming to our ocean TLC mod Sunken Scoop 9 was when the wyrms slithered onto the scene with some awe-inspiring models, as well as sharing custom art a dynamic, volcanic duo Sunken Scoop 10 brought the wyrms to life with some incredible animations, alongside marking the completion of custom artwork for our entire roster of 40+ custom creatures I'll try to not be too cheesy, but thank you for all your support this year. TSW is our labour of love, and seeing how much our fanbase has grown this year has been really heartwarming and humbling. If you've made youtube videos, drawn fanart, taken screenshots or even just hung around on our discord, we'd like to extend a massive thanks to you, the community! Here's to an amazing 2024 for TSW and beyond! COMMUNITY CORNER The Community Corner will open back up again in 2024. We're very excited to see the TSW content you create in the new year! 10. Welcome back marine biology superfans! After a short break it's time to get back in the two week swing, it's Sunken Scoop time! Time to build up an even bigger ongoing streak of fortnightly releases. 18 weeks straight was a massive undertaking, and after posting one while I was still on holidays I think I deserved a breather :p. My ramblings out of the way though, what's coming in this edition? 3 weeks ago we revealed the Wyrms in all their draconic glory, and in that time Kami has been hard at work giving them their animations! In addition, we've finally got custom made art for all of the creatures on our roster! The arctic giant Tylosaurus gets a fresh coat of paint, Drepanaspis gets its portrait done and the Sea Urchin stood still long enough for us to get its picture taken! DOING THE WYRM We make no promises on them doing the actual dance, but our sea serpents certainly have some moves! Scorching Kami has been up to her usual animating wizardry and now we can proudly present how these giants will be moving about in game thanks to all her hard work! Here's a selection of animations to give you a taste of what seeing these monstrosities in action will be like! Idle These draconic creatures will be a trophy that you can't help but show off! Even when resting their serpentine forms are a thing to behold! Just make sure to give these fellows enough space in your undersea cities! Movement A sprinting wyrm is just as beautiful as it is terrifying! This sight might be the last thing a survivor exploring the waves will see, especially if you've just stolen one of their eggs! And if you're riding one, I hope you don't get too seasick! Did we mention these guys can go on land? No? Well, these serpents can certainly slither across the sands! Something we really should've mentioned last scoop is that our draconic mascots are very much semi-aquatic! However, much like how a Wyvern is much more suited to the air, the Wyrms are much more comfortable feeling the waves between their fins... but they'll still be a deadly adversary to face on the shores of the Sunken World! Super Attack! When we said super finishing moves, we meant it! With the grace of a ribbon dancer and the power of a dragon, a Wyrm's full on assault is surely a spectacle to behold! For as long as you command, your serpentine steed will unleash fury on your enemies! However, such raw power come with a cost. The sheer force behind the Wyrm's attacks will harm allies just as much as enemies, and your giant pet noodle will start to tire very quickly while it's giving its all in combat! Use this power wisely, and make sure your friends are well out of the way! Wyrms sure do get frustrated when they can't demonstrate the full might of their fury! While devastating in the water, on land these giant sea serpents just can't seem to get their spin going! While we're mostly Sunken at heart, we still want people to be able to use these creatures outside of the water, but have to make sure we're not making a super-tame with very few counters (looking at you Shadowmane). To keep the Wyrms balanced, you aren't able to use your beast's super attack when on land, but once you bring them back into their element they'll be ready to show off what they can really do! Cuddle After a long day of showing the ocean who's boss, even a giant serpent needs some pampering! Pictured above is your loveable long-boy's cuddle/level up animation! Whether you've just gone out on a successful hunt or are raising the next generation of sea dragons, you can't deny that they look like some happy little spaghetti noodles! TYLOSAURUS ART REWORK It's been over 3 years since I last drew Tylosaurus, and it's about time our Arctic mosasaur gets a fresh coat of paint! Proudly presenting the new and improved blubbery boy, courtesy of ZCI! This enormous reptile may just look like a fatter Mosasaurus, but don't be fooled! A life in the frigid ocean has given it a unique ability... it can freeze the surrounding seawater into a protective coat of icy armour! In the wild, you'll commonly see these giants smashing through ice floes to quickly armour up, but when tamed a conventional saddle can interrupt the formation of their sub-zero protection. Luckily, for a bit of a heavier resource cost, you can equip your Tylosaurus with a mean suit of plate mail that allows the ice to give your companion some major bonuses to its defences! Just remember to bring some ice chunks with you if you take them to hotter climates, it's hard to make ice when the water is hot! NEW CONCEPT ART Drepanaspis Now that's one spicy pancake! Drepanaspis has gotten a long overdue splash of colour, courtesy of RexMyPet. These flat-faced fish inhabit the hottest climates deep below the waves, and more than just their personality is fiery! A tamed Drepanaspis functions like a minature geothermal generator, charging any batteries placed into its inventory! In addition, if you want to make an unconventional army, these fish run so hot that they deal some burning-hot recoil damage to most attackers! Sea Urchin We won't be mad if this is the only creature on The Sunken World that you didn't want to pet! The humble Sea Urchin also got its portrait done over the past few weeks! As we've mentioned before, these bottom dwellers are much more sought out than one would imagine. Their spines offer a very unappetising defence, but are also highly valuable to humans as a source of organic Spear Bolts! Load up your harpoons with the much more readily available spines of a Sea Urchin, and ditch that weirdly complicated and annoying crafting recipe! Thanks go to RexMyPet for this art piece! 11. Welcome back deep-water denizens! It's that time again! And just because it's the holiday season (for some of you, Happy Thanksgiving to those who celebrate!) doesn't mean we can't do some scooping! In this edition we've got sneak peeks at new friends of all shapes and sizes! In the concept art department, Tyrant Shrimp (now in technicolor) and Magma Turtle make their debut, and Orthacanthus leaps to centre stage! Henodus also gets a new portrait to match its in-game look! We've also been hard at work on some draconic friends for quite some time now, and it's finally time for the Wyrms to rear their scaly heads! THE EARLY WYRM GETS THE SURVIVOR It's about time we properly showcased the draconic creatures that inhabit The Sunken World! Introducing the Tidal, Thermite and Brine Wyrms! These oceanic giants will fill the same role as Wyverns on Scorched Earth: enormous scaled reptiles that terrify the locals, or lead the helm of your armies! These beasts are one of the apexes of the map, and with their impressive array of elemental attacks, there's only a few opponents that can stand up to them! There's even rumours that particulary powerful Wyrms can execute devastating finishing moves... And if you're brave enough to hunt all three, you could make a mean noodle soup! Massive thanks go to Scorching Kami for all the hard work she did to bring these fellows to life! Tidal Wyrm Meet the king of the ocean currents! The Tidal Wyrm inhabits the Glow Reef, and with its ability to shoot concentrated beams of freezing water, there are few predators foolish enough to challenge it on its home turf! And as if this sea serpent wasn't dangerous enough, a skilled rider can train their Tidal Wyrm to create a powerful whirlpool that draws enemies into a concussive maelstrom of water! For lovers of Lightning Wyverns, this Wyrm is for you! Thermite Wyrm Behold the emperor of fire! Thermite Wyrms inhabit the superheated Thermal Reef and can be rarely found in the Molten Range. This Wyrm produces intense fireballs that continue burning even underwater! This is thanks to the large quantity of thermite found in these projectiles, allowing them to ignite below the waves. It's also what gives these draconic serpents their name. Undersea explorers have told tales of these deep sea firecrackers quite literally boiling the sea around them in a terrifying display of their power! Those that love to lob the toxic spit of the Poison Wyvern and Basilisk at their enemies will be a perfect match for this conflagrant companion! Brine Wyrm An undead undertaker rises from the toxic depths of the brine! Brine Wyrms inhabit the Brine Pools, some of the lowest reaches of the ARK, and with their ghastly appearance it's hard to imagine them living anywhere else! These serpents secrete a noxious cloud of brine that will engulf your enemies in a deadly cloud of super salty water! And should a Brine Wyrm require the upper hand in battle, it will exude a large cloud of damaging miasma that saps their opponent's strength and shatters their armour! People who love to pilot the Fire Wyvern will feel right at home on the back of a Brine Wyrm! A DYNAMIC, MAGMATIC DUO Tyrant Shrimp Don't disturb the wasp nest that is the shell of a Magma Turtle! An angry swarm of Tyrant Shrimp is sure to get you to buzz off for disturbing their home! These formidable crustaceans are most common in the Molten Range, and their claws are used for more than just their intimidating eyespots! The great deal of power behind their clubber claws smash apart minerals with ease, and they use the surprising dexterity in their cannon claws to load up a rocky payload in their bubbly bullets! Different mineral resources loaded into the claws of a Tyrant Shrimp will give different effects to their projectiles! These claws also fold up neatly when not in use, meaning this shrimp is as nimble as it is deadly! ZCI found that this creature was quite shrimple to draw, and did an amazing job on its artwork! As shown in Z's mock-up, eyespots can really confuse potential predators! Magma Turtle This undersea titan puts the "power" in turtle power! As we've said many times before, this hero in a hot shell is a mobile home for colonies of Tyrant Shrimp, and in ZCI's incredible feature piece, we see it defend its resident Tyrant Shrimp from a pair of hunting Thermite Wyrms! Its enormous size and powerful beak could make short work of the marauding serpents, if only it was quick enough to catch them! Its impressive firepower is best harnessed by the most daring of survivors, as its shell will power any structures placed onto it through geothermal energy! In addition, Tyrant Shrimp can be stationed along its flank, creating one of the most powerful organic strongholds on the map! Due to their symbiotic relationship, all a Magma Turtle needs to do is release a black smoke to get its crustacean armada on the offensive, and a survivor can easily command it to do so! NEW CONCEPT ART Orthacanthus Meet your new best slimy shark/catfish/mudskipper/hagfish friend! Orthacanthus dwells in the Mangrove Swamps, stalking the waters between the roots of trees... or leaping across the land to chase down its prey! That's right, this shark can walk on land, and can even jump a considerable distance to catch a meal! A thick coat of slime keeps it from drying out on land, and aids it in moving out of the water. In addition, Orthacanthus slime is so thick that it can really gunk up the mouths, limbs and claws of any aggressors, meaning there's a chance that an attacker will miss its strike! However, the velocity of a ranged projectile will still pierce right through the gooey armour, and it takes time for it to regenerate its coat after sustaining enough damage. Shoot to kill, or just keep on slashing away if you want to slay this beast! Thanks to RexMyPet for the artwork! Henodus You should all recognise this turtle look-alike by now! Henodus has been out on the ASE branch for 7 months now (which makes us feel quite old), but for those who don't know what this fellow does, this shelled reptile is the perfect early game mobile home! You can build right on its back, and it won't draw attention from the raft-hating Leedsichthys, and it can burrow into the seafloor to produce an oxygenated area below the waves! Perfect for a quick and dirty underwater base, or for helping to keep that KO tame that just had to run into the sea from drowning! Thanks to RexMyPet for Henodus' much needed artwork update! COMMUNITY CORNER We are still quite a small community, so we haven't received any submissions for this two weeks' Sunken Scoop. However, please feel free to submit something yourself! Anything from screenshots, artwork, videos and the so on, and we can featured your work in the next scoop! The submissions channel in our discord is always open, or you can tag us @ARKSunken with #sunkenscoop on Twitter! That's all for this issue of the Sunken Scoop, thanks for tuning in! From Tyrant Shrimp to Thermite Wyrms, there's certainly a lot of new faces that have been revealed today! Come to our discord talk about your favourite new tame-to-be, or just to hang out! 12. Welcome back ocean explorers! Ignore the other way cooler news with ASA releasing, it's time for TSW's next scoop! This edition features confirmation of us coming to ASA, alongside a guided tour through some of the new biomes coming to the map! From the surface regions to the undersea trenches deep below, we're showing off a selection of our biome concept art. For those of you already on our discord, you've definitely seen some of these places before, but we're also going behind the scenes with some of our environmental model references for these new underwater ecosystems! WHAT'S THE SCOOP WITH ASA? We're officially coming to ASA! The team is currently hard at work making sure TSW Additions is ported over properly, with all its creatures and features. To avoid the dreaded ARK release date syndrome, we won't be giving a public release date, but you'll see us in the mod browser very soon! As you may have noticed, a lot of mods have tried to separate their large mods into smaller ones, but we'll be sticking to the same format as in ASE. Easier for us and easier for people who use the map if everything only requires two mods! But what about The Sunken World itself? As we've said before, MercerLord plans to completely recreate the map from scratch using the WorldCreator software to really bring the map to the next level. Unfortunately this means that the map will take quite some time to be ready for release, especially as we want to make sure we have the same progress done as the ASE branch. However, as said a few scoops ago, we'll be making our creatures available on The Island so you can still frolic with your favourite TSW tames. We'll also be adjusting resource requirements so you'll be able to craft most of everything outside the map (also the resource converter will still exist!) With all the new water related features in ASA, the wait should be well worth it when we're able to release the map! In terms of the ASE branch, we still plan to do one final update for TSW Additions before switching over all production to ASA. You'll see that soon! OH THE BIOMES YOU'LL GO Unlike the "one biome fits all" of the vanilla ocean (though ASA's seas definitely look a lot prettier!), there's a multitude of new underwater biomes to explore on The Sunken World! Our biome concept artist RexMyPet has been working long and hard to create some visually distinct and downright beautiful works of art to represent these new habitats. A few pieces of artwork from this giant section have already been added to the roster channels on the discord, but we felt that they really should get a proper reveal like they deserved! Also, unless otherwise stated, assume Rex is behind the masterpieces you see in this section! From biome to biome, near and far, you'll find beauty in the sea wherever you are! So join us on a journey, from Seagrass Isle to Molten Trench, it's time to explore and drop the suspense! (look if I make a reference to Doctor Seuss you best believe I'm rhyming) We'll start in the sunlight region and slowly travel down until we reach the bottom of the map! So let's start at... Seagrass Island To the northeast of the map you'll find a living island so strong it dragged an obelisk down from the sky! Welcome to Seagrass Island, a Life of Pi inspired landmass that serves as our Herbivore Island, artwork courtesy of Nitrin the Dead! An idyllic retreat, the giant isle is dotted with huge pools, giving access to the gloomy jungle of kelp below. However, the sea is not as kind as the living forest above, as Kelpies lurk in the shadows beneath, waiting in ambush to drag survivors to their untimely demise! Stay on your toes if you want to go for a swim! The Seagrass Island is dotted with a myriad of exotic flora both above and below the waves! Such a unique biome deserves a host of alien plants to really make it pop! Mangrove Forest In real life, mangroves are highly beneficial ecosystems that help prevent coastal erosion and are home to a huge variety of species! In the context of ARK however... anything with "swamp" in the name is a no go for most players! We hope your previous biases with The Island don't stop you from checking out this beautiful biome! The dappled light drifting between giant mangrove trees reveals a forest where lilypads grow so big you can build on top of them! While we're an ocean TLC first and foremost, we certainly want to make the swamps at least somewhat more appealing to live in! You can build your own Ewok village on the trunks of the tallest mangroves and achieve your inner frog's aspirations while hopping from lilypad to lilypad! And don't forget to make friends with a Liaoningosaurus, the cute little ankylosaurs that call this place home! Just keep an eye out for Orthacanthus, these sharks can chase you down even on land due to their slimy skin! As you can see by Lowkey's art, these guys really are the cutest armoured creatures around! Shroom Glades In the waters surrounding the Mangrove Swamp, strange mushrooms grow beneath the waves! The Shroom Glades border the shallows around the mangrove, and they're filled with some downright bizzare fungi. This biome will be a great source of Fungal Wood and Rare Mushrooms, and the huge mats of algae conceal lots of little air pocket caves... perfect for a starter base under the sea! Also yes, there's definitely some major inspiration from the Mushroom Forests of Subnautica. There's a reason we joke that we're ARK: Subnautica Evolved (though I guess it's Subnautica Ascended now?) Here's a selection of fungi of all shapes and sizes! Plus some algae arches to boot! Glow Reef If you travel to the Twilight Region, you'll find a place that has as much life in it as it does bioluminescence! The Glow Reef is a biome many of you will be familiar with, as it currently exists in ASE. However we're due to give it a visual TLC in ASA with a new caste of unique plant life! While there's little need to fear the darkness of the deep sea in this biome, the predators are another story! An area this rich in life is the perfect hunting ground for an apex predator like the Tidal Wyrm! But once you've conquered the dangerous side of this biome, you'll be free to enjoy the natural lightshow! From sprawling corals to otherworldly structures, what would the Glow Reef be if everything didn't glow? Thermal Reef If you see billowing black smoke and tall russet spires dotting the seafloor, you've made it to the Thermal Reef! If you can withstand the heat, it's a great place to live, as there's plenty of geothermal energy to harness! Just pop a Geothermal Plant onto a thermal vent and you've got free, all natural power for your underwater base! You'll probably want to be well armed if you want to live here, however. An Edestus could slice you to shreds, and if you're not careful a Thermite Wyrm will turn you into survivor flambé! Rex did a truly incredible job designing this awe-inspiring, undersea biome... but does anyone else get hungry for sushi looking at that middle plant? Brine Pools In the darkness of the Midnight Region, you'll find toxic falls and ethereal plants patrolled by skeletal serpents! Watch your back, danger lurks around every corner in the Brine Pools. The Brine Wyrm calls this hostile place home, and will make a meal out of any survivor that crosses its path! But the dangerous expanse holds a valuable treasure... the plants that grow here naturally produce Organic Polymer! The Brine Pools are home to a veritable garden of ghastly trees and ethereal structures! If only the beauty could take away from the danger... The Sunken City At the edge of an unfathomably deep abyss lies the Sunken City! All that remains of an "unsinkable" nation now lies at one of the deepest depths of this ARK. While one side of the city remains bright, futuristic power sources illuminating the ghost town, the buildings on the other side of the hellish rift have fallen into disrepair. Amongst the scrap metal, you'll find various useful resources like Electronics and Element Dust! Automated machines march perpetually onwards, completing tasks for a people who have been lost to time. Be careful in your pillaging, as a patrolling Vindicator will be quick to punish your desctruction of property! The abandoned buildings of the Sunken City will provide explorers respite from the pressure of the deep sea! Air pockets inside make for the perfect place to rest, or build a base if you dare brave the deep! And perhaps exploring these bygone structures could uncover some of the secrets of the Sunken World... Not much can grow so deep underwater, but various forms of life cling to the wreckage of a long-forgotten world The Molten Underground Beware delving too deep in your greed to explore... You never know what you might awake in the darkness... The Molten Underground lies within the chasm in the Sunken City and is the deepest point of the map. The most hostile biome on the ARK is home to slumbering giants... Magma Turtles! The dangers of the underworld hide a multitude of precious minerals, but be mindful which formations you choose to mine for ore, as an angry Magmarochelon and its shoal of Tyrant Shrimp is not something you want to trifle with! And you'll definitely want to keep an escape route in mind, as the undersea volcanoes that dot this hellscape could erupt at any moment! 13. Welcome back sunken survivors! Another two weeks, another scoop! Time to share what we've been working on over the past two weeks, the new and improved Tyrant Shrimp and Thalassocnus designs! Also, while it's not our news, we hope you're all excited just as excited as us for some ASA reveals in about 4 hours from now! We'll rehash our plans for ASA again too in case you missed them two weeks ago! TYRANT SHRIMP CONCEPT You mean to tell me a shrimp tied this rant? Here's Tyrant Shrimp, but what's up with ZCI making two designs? To be clear, we're definitely going with V1 as the final design, but as is the case with a lot of these scoops, we love giving you a behind the scenes look! We really want to show off what goes on behind the curtain, so you can all get a good idea of what goes into our creature design process. Having said that, what does this fantasy crustacean do? Tyrant Shrimp is a hot-shelled gunslinging arthropod! While it may be somewhat diminuitive in size next to our oceanic giants, don't underestimate its fiery temper! You'll be able to shoot superheated bubbles from its giant claws, and if you provide it some minerals as ammunition, it'll seriously increase its firepower! Also, as mentioned last week, the Tyrant Shrimp has a symbiotic relationship with the mighty Magma Turtle! The massive shelled fortress has some seriously powerful gunmen protecting its walls! THALASSOCNUS CONCEPT Sid's gone for a swim! Introducing the new and improved Thalassocnus! The big sloth was long overdue a facelift, courtesy of WaterWitch, the old artwork we had (made by me, ashgcy) just recently hit 3 years old! It should be said though, we don't just rework art because of age. When creatures are redesigned, it's because we feel that they either weren't distinct enough from their vanilla "counterparts" or they needed something more to really help them fit into their roles on the map. Thalassocnus is now sexually dimorphic, with males and females mimicking the look of elephant seals, and also got some long overdue fancy dress... This living crop plot has some style! Plus it's not just form over function too, certain organic "outfits" will provide bonuses to your sloth! A punk-rock Somniweed hairdo will give your sloth a real KO punch! A coat of Celerweed will provide some near unlimited running endurance! And should you go toe-to-toe with a Thalassocnus sporting Sea Urchin brass knuckles... let's just say I'm betting my money on Sid. ASA REHASH Quick rehash on what's planned when ASA drops! If you missed them last time, and want the full details, go here. What are our plans? We're coming to ASA! (most likely) We'll release the creature mod first, map mod later We're going to push one last update to the ASE mod after said update, we'll only be doing bug fixes for ASE We're very excited to get our hands on the kit, and can't wait to see you all in UE5! COMMUNITY CORNER Scoop? Sunken. Corner? Communitied! Here's some more stuff from all you wonderful supporters of the mod! Feel free to submit something yourself! Anything from screenshots, artwork, videos and the so on, and we can featured your work in the next scoop! There's a submissions channel in our discord, or you can tag us @ARKSunken with #sunkenscoop on Twitter! Clips and Videos Creator: Freyn A familiar face known for his highly informative creature vote videos (seriously, go check those out), Freyn is breaking into the ocean theme just as much as we are. Here's his Top 10 ways to improve the ocean in ARK! You may even see some shots of a very recogniseable, up-and-coming mod map! That's all for this issue of the Sunken Scoop, thanks for tuning in! We can't wait to see the reveals in store for ASA (funny that scoop day is also ASA gameplay day), and we hope you're just as excited! Feel free to come to our discord to chat or just hang out! 14. Welcome back flooded followers! It's about time we talk about the elephant in the room: What are our plans for ASA? We'll be giving you all the full rundown on what's going to happen later in the month when the game arrives, and what will be happening in the lead-up to the launch of the game. It's still business as usual though, we'll keep the content reveals coming till ASA and beyond! This scoop brings with it a revamped Magma Turtle design, alongside visuals for Omnidens mechanics! We'll also be doing another behind the scenes feature on our development process, this time for everyone's go-to early game armour set... Sea Scale! If this is your first time jumping into the deep end, we are a dedicated team of individuals who are looking to spruce up the ocean biome in the same way that Scorched Earth offered a unique, biome specific challenge to survival. Let's dive into this enormous scoop! WHAT'S HAPPENING WITH ASA Our Plans? ASA is shaping up to be absolutely massive for the modding community after the reveal we saw of Garuga's work on Deinotheirum. We're really excited to work with the new engine and see how much we can improve the mod because of it. The whole team is feeling really hopeful and positive about access to UE5 and what it can do for the mod! The teased features we've seen, like FluidNinja, will really help the map feel so much more alive, and we're very excited to see just how far we can push ourselves with access to UE5! If the engine permits we could even bring back some scrapped mechanics that were unable to be made in ASE! We definitely plan to make the jump once we know more! We're waiting for information and access to the dev kit like everyone else, but you'll more than likely see us in ASA! When will the mods become available? We're planning to have TSW Additions ready shortly after ASA's launch. We'll have all your favourite undersea creatures ready for you as soon as we can get them ported over, however the map itself may take some time. With the new features of the engine, Mercer is hoping to redo the map from scratch, for the third time if you’d believe that! While we feel the current map has definitely made improvements to ARK’s oceans, we really want to deliver in ASA. Easier navigation, more “true to life” oceanography, more distinction within the biomes… the list goes on. We want to make sure the ASA map is at the same level of completion as the current one before we release it, so it won't be ready as quickly as the creatures. What happens to the ASE branch? We’ll still be keeping the ASE branch up, however we won’t be making any more major updates post ASA, aside from bug fixes and the like. If we have time, we’ll try to get a new creature or two out before ASA, but we can’t make any promises. There won’t be any new additions to the map before the launch of ASA. All said and done, ASA can't come sooner and we can't wait to explore the possibilities it brings! MAGMA TURTLE CONCEPT When we brought back this fan favourite, we knew we had to give it the glow-up it deserved! Magma Turtle gets a fresh coat of paint, courtesy of ZCI! This living volcano of a creature will inhabit the deepest oceanic trenches on the map, surrounded by a swarm of Tyrant Shrimp! These two animals are planned to have a symbiotic relationship, the Magma Turtle offering one of the most impenetrable refuges in the sea, with the Tyrant Shrimps working as one of the most deadly battalions to keep their host safe! We'll be revealing more about these two unique animals very soon! Keep an eye out for Tyrant Shrimp's new look too! OMNIDENS CONCEPT PAGE In the last scoop, we revealed the earth terror in all its glory! Since then, ZCI has whipped up this incredible concept page so we can show off exactly what this giant beastie is planned to do! For starters, you'll be able to find Omnidens at all depths... though obviously not at full size! Babies can be found growing in shallower waters, and the deeper you go, the bigger they get! And when a newly hatched Omnidens is the length of a Kapro, even an infant is a fearsome predator! However, we don't plan on making it a baby tame... we're thinking something a bit more explosive... Talking more on mechanics though, why not turn a subterranean horror into a literal subway? Introducing Worm Train! With the perfectly sealed compartments that make up its saddle, take yourself and some friends for the ride of their life on the biggest predator of the Sunken World! Breathe easy in the water or under the sand, and don't worry about your passengers getting hit through the saddle amidst the carnage. After all, this train can pick up a Plesiosaur in its enormous jaws! SEA SCALE ARMOUR FEATURE I'd be surprised if someone had never worn a piece of this armour! If you're looking for a new look to fit the map, Sea Scale is the way to go! But why should you wear a suit of fish parts and seaweed? And what were some troubles we came across designing it? Our whole goal with TSW is to bridge the gap between early and late game ocean survival. And with SCUBA being unlocked all the way at level 81, there's definitely a clear late game bias to getting under the waves. Sea Scale fills that massive gap; it's an aquatic hide-tiered armour set that makes going underwater a little less daunting. But how does it do that? The biggest issue we wanted to solve was being unable to regenerate stamina underwater. Everyone knows the "sit on your tame" or "place a chair" trick, but it really breaks up that survival experience and makes adventuring in the ocean so much scarier in vanilla. Thats why a full set of Sea Scale will allow you to regenerate your stamina when not moving! In addition, it increases your swimming speed so you can maybe swim fast enough to get away from whatever is chasing you. With Sea Scale, underwater exploration isn't locked behind a mount or late game items! Just kill some fish and you can explore the waves "on foot"! But what was so difficult about designing it? Well, turns out that while conceptualising a custom armour set isn't difficult, modelling it sure is! Some veterans of the mod may remember when Sea Scale was just cyan coloured hide, and this placeholder existed for so long because it took Scorching Kami nearly half a year to model the custom set! Modelling lots of tiny scales takes a lot of effort, and getting the suit to stretch its proportions for the freak-of-nature characters everyone loves to make also takes a good deal of effort. Nitrin did an incredible job with the details on this art... so many intricate details... too many intricate details! COMMUNITY CORNER Another scoop, another set of community submissions! Feel free to submit something yourself! Anything from screenshots, artwork, videos and the so on, and we can featured your work in the next scoop! 15. Welcome back cephalopod connoisseurs! Why the sudden squid theming this scoop? Well, we've been very busy over the past two weeks creating some new friends that will come to the mod in the near future, lots of progress has been made since we last updated you! The psychedelic Parapuzosia has been sighted in the sunken waters, but don't let its spectacular shades of colour distract you! Hippocampus has also made a sneaky appearance on the coral reefs, so keep your eyes peeled for a moving mass of coral! In addition, we'll be giving you a sneak peek into the dev kit as we develop Edestus' conflagrant capabilities! And if you're willing to brave the depths, there's even more new faces to meet! If this is your first time jumping into the deep end, we are a dedicated team of individuals who are looking to spruce up the ocean biome in the same way that Scorched Earth offered a unique, biome specific challenge to survival. Let's dive into this enormous scoop! HIPPOCAMPUS MODEL REVEAL Don't be fooled by its camouflage! You're not just looking at a mass of coral, that's Hippocampus! This majestic water horse finally makes its debut on The Sunken World (or was it always here, just really well hidden... hmm), and will be an invaluable early game companion. They say the best way to hide is in plain sight, and Hippocampus's natural disguise will mean most predators will simply ignore your prescence, allowing you to cruise the ocean waters in relative safety! I mean, who would want to take a bite of a ridiculously hard chunk of coral? Filling a similar role to an underwater Trike/Equus hybrid, the Hippocampus will be effective on the battlefield too, with males and females sporting sexual dimorphism, giving their impressive headgear different utility! Do you want your war steed to have the dangerously serrated horns of the male, or the torpor inducing headbutt of the female? Thanks to the dynamic duo, Nitz and Snappin, for their work creating this reveal! PARAPUZOSIA MODEL REVEAL While Hippocampus subtly came onto the scene, some creatures just want to have a flamboyant entrance... Introducing Parapuzosia! This giant ammonite is a living kaleidoscope, both in its looks and in its colourful array of abilities! Its enormous shell stores a variety of inks, which it can either use to afflict its enemies with debilitating effects, or spray onto its allies to provide a variety of buffs! You can use it in combat to redirect your enemies attacks, pacify a predator in pursuit of your allies, use it as an highly adaptable taming tool or even allow it to function as a moving infirmary on the battlefield! We can't wait to see you breed up colour mutations on these things! Again, the dynamic duo strikes again! Nitz and Snappin, you guys are legends! A FIERY PEEK BEHIND THE CURTAIN Since Edestus last showed its face back in Sunken Scoop 2, Snappin has been hard at work coding its mechanics! Here's a look at the kind of havoc you could unleash from the back of this volcanic shark! Edestus will be able to heat up its impressive nasal "horn" and impale your enemies with a fiery fury! This literally hot-headed fighting style will be fueled with a new resource, Thermite, a chemical that can burn even underwater! Make sure to have a supply available to keep your Edestus nice and toasty on the battlefield, and your shark will be able to hack and slash through your foes with deadly efficiency! VOLT SQUID MODEL TEASER Volt Squid also makes its first debut, adding another cephalopod to the surprising number of squids this scoop! Much like Parapuzosia, it also has found a unique use for its ink, though rather than variety, it specialises in delivering a one of a kind, flashy show... literally. Prepare for an organic flashbang if you ever meet this squid in the deep sea! We're excited to show you more in the near future! OMNIDENS CONCEPT ART If one creature on the map embodies thalassophobia, it's Omnidens! The titan of the deep has gotten a major glow up thanks to ZCI, and now makes its terrifying debut! This absolutely enormous creature patrols the endless seafloor, just waiting to snap up its next meal. Stay on your toes survivor, the abyss just got a whole lot scarier... Though, why not rule the deep? Omnidens is planned to be a tameable creature, and will fill a niche similar to the Reaper, a powerful predator with huge amounts of natural damage reduction! For those brave enough to try to bring this Cambrian superpredator to heel, you'll never have to worry about being on the bottom of the food chain again... unless you run into a bigger Omnidens of course! COMMUNITY CORNER We've received some wonderful submissions over the past two weeks! It's been really humbling to see how much love people have for our project, and we can't wait to see more of what you create! 16. Welcome back watery wanderers! After the reception of the tropics release, we've been hard at work getting ready to populate the map with lots of new creatures! For this peek behind the curtain, Aquilolamna makes its debut, Ferrodraco's animations are well underway and we'll be doing a deep dive into the design process of Anomalocaris! With that out of the way, let's explore all the new features that came with the tropics! AQUILOLAMNA MODEL REVEAL Sighoptera has been hard at work improving his modelling skills! This is his first fully custom model, and everyone in the team is really proud of his incredible work! As mentioned in Sunken Scoop 1, Aquilolamna will be like the Tropeognathus of the sea, a jet propelled shark to get you where you need to be! Below is a selection of images, showing this shark's unique proportions, and its proposed patterns posed in the Dev Kit! SOMETHING METAL THIS WAY COMES You might want to start checking the sky for danger... Ferrodraco's animation work is well underway! Hauki has been breathing life into the terrifying pterosaur in the form of Idle, Walk and Level Up animations! With its giraffe like proportions, it's been an interesting challenge to give it a more "accurate" gait and make it a true terror! Though these animations don't have a sense of scale... this beast will tower over you as it walks, it's as tall as a Rex! The model shown here may look a bit different to our previous reveals. This is because a lot of animation work is done with a lower quality version of the model, called a "lowpoly". If the high quality model was used, it would take far more time to render, as the animation program would have to load up much more data (textures, more intricate details etc). ANOMALOCARIS CREATURE FEATURE Time for a deep dive into the development of everyone's favourite little scuba tank! While the concept may seem simple enough, there were some surprising difficulties we encountered (and still encounter :p) when designing this invertebrate! The biggest difficulty on an aquatic themed map is "how are you going to breathe". It simply wouldn't be fun to have to wait all the way until you get scuba to be able to swim. The main design principle for Anomalocaris was introducing a creature that would allow you to explore the sea much earlier than in the vanilla game without the same limitations. However, living scuba had to come at a cost, so the original plan was to have Anomalocaris drain your health while you used it, alongside its tendency to wear down the durability of your chestpiece. The issue we ran into was that in vanilla, while a player is swimming they will never regenerate health naturally. This posed a huge problem for gameplay because... well you need health to live. After debating other options, we chose to allow Anomalocaris to regenerate your health, stamina and oxygen, at the cost of causing your food to drain down much quicker. Another difficulty we ran into was how to keep an aquatic shoulder pet underwater. When Anomalocaris first released, the animal would remain on your shoulder even after you left the water. Throwing it off while on land either caused it to be stuck there until picked up again, or fly off into the distance. In addition, if you were on land and tried to throw it into the water, it would skip along the surface like you were skipping a stone! Thankfully we've introduced a check that boots the animal off your back when you hit the surface of the water, but knowing ARK as the glitchy mess we know and love, sometimes you might see your Cambrian compadre fly off into the realms unknown! I guess you could say Anomalocaris really put the "bug" in buggy. Seriously... why is the most important creature on the map such a problem child COMMUNITY CORNER While there may not be any screenshots or artwork to share, we've seen some really incredible WIPs in the discord, and can't wait to share the talent around! As always, feel free to submit your content in the channel in our discord, or tag us at @ARKSunken using #SunkenScoop to be featured! Screenshots, artwork and Youtube videos welcome! 17. Welcome back seaside survivors! It's been a busy two weeks for us, following the release of the tropics update last Wednesday! There's a whole new paradise for you to explore on the map, alongside some new friends to bring into your tribe. Whether you're exploring the reefs, surfing the ocean currents, or just enjoying some fun in the sun, we're glad to see how much you're enjoying the new update! Just don't forget to do the "survival" part of ARK Survival Evolved while you're enjoying your getaway! If this is your first time getting your feet wet with all things Sunken, we are a dedicated team of individuals who are looking to spruce up the ocean biome in the same way that Scorched Earth offered a unique, biome specific challenge to survival. With that out of the way, let's explore all the new features that came with the tropics! NEW CREATURES This update brings two new critters to add to your menagerie, the Coral Golem and the Sunken Spino! These two creatures are Sunken Variants, water-loving animals that have adapted to a life even more at sea! The Sunken Variants are our map exclusive creatures, and serve as both a way to make some animals more appropriate for a map that's mostly ocean and a way to breathe some new life or even TLC some of the underappreciated aquatics. To give a little insider look into their makeovers, we'll be going in depth on our design process for these beautiful beasties! Sunken Spinosaurus What happens when an ARK suddenly floods, drastically changing the environment to a much more oceanic one than before? Well, you'd expect the Spinosaurus to ascend to the title of an apex predator! The Sunken Spino is our take on what would happen if a Spinosaurus had to evolve to live a life at sea. It shares most mechanics with its vanilla counterpart, however, due to its much squatter frame and stronger disposition for swimming, it is much less capable on land. It has some difficulty moving its far heavier frame across dry ground, using more stamina while running. This is a nod to how some animals, like seals and penguins, have to make sacrifices to parts of their mobility in order to be much more agile in their preferred habitat. With most of its time spent at sea, our Spinosaur had to evolve a way to track down its prey. Much like modern toothed whales, the Sunken Spino uses echolocation to hunt! This trait is very useful if you're pursuing a target that tries to hide in the inky darkness of the deep sea, and great for survivors to expose people trying to get the jump on them! In short, Sunken Spinosaurus is what we think could happen in the ARK universe if a Spino was forced to adapt for an oceanic life. However, it's still not all the way to a fully aquatic lifestyle, so it serves as a transitional species to what might become a more whale-like animal in the distant future! Coral Golem The Rock Golem is one of the last creatures you'd expect to find deep under the sea for the mere fact it sinks like, well, a rock. And yet, they've adapted wonderfully to an oceanic life! Living underwater has mellowed out Coral Golem's temperament, meaning it is docile until provoked. Essentially a miniature, walking coral reef, perhaps it just likes the company of the small schools of fish that follow it around. Don't understimate it though, if you're foolish enough to pick a fight with one, it's just as dangerous as its land living counterpart! While it can no longer launch boulders with the force of a catapult, the coral growing on its body seems to be able to react to its command. From its left arm, it can grow an enormous coral shield to protect itself from aggressors, and the spiny corals that grow on its right hand are able to quickly grow at will to deliver a devastatingly powerful punch! Unrelated to the golem in the foreground, but equally important to mention are the creatures riding the ocean currents above! Currents have made their return in this update, and these oceanic superhighways will greatly increase your speed when you travel with them. Just go with the flow! A LOOK AROUND THE MAP Pretty self explanatory what's in this section. While we want you to explore the map yourself, here's some pictures of some things we don't want you to miss! The tropical islands aren't the only new shiny thing this update! On some nights in the Pacific Inlets, the moon isn't the only thing to light up the darkness! If you're lucky, you might get to witness the glow of bioluminescent plankton turning the sea an ethereal blue! This event has no purpose other than to look pretty, but let's be real, sometimes a beautiful moment is all it needs to be! Don't forget to poke your head underwater when you visit the tropics! While it's tempting to lie in the sunshine on the white sand beaches all day, the coral reefs in the island chain are to die for! Try not to get lost in the dizzying colours and towers of living limestone! COMMUNITY CORNER As mentioned last scoop, we have started our own community corner! Here's the first features from our community! We'd love to see more though, so please submit away in the channel in our discord, or tag us at @ARKSunken using #SunkenScoop to be featured! 18. Welcome back denizens of the deep! As you can probably tell by the image above (thank you ZCI!), this scoop is a big one! We've been hard at work these past two weeks getting mechanics mostly finalised for the winners of the creature vote, alongside polishing up some concepts for the other creatures in our mod. In addition, a new fiery friend will be making his debut! To those gracing the Sunken Shores for the first time, we are a dedicated team of individuals who are looking to spruce up the ocean biome in the same way that Scorched Earth offered a unique, biome specific challenge to survival. New creatures, resources, structures, items and more, all set on a huge custom map, we're looking to give ARK's oceans the TLC they deserve! The main goal is to bridge that huge gap between early and late game ocean exploration, and make it much more viable and more fun to live a life beneath the waves! VOTE WINNER CONCEPTS Two weeks ago, an unthinkable tie occured in our own little creature contest. Rather than pick one or the other, we decided to throw caution to the wind and just add both! Introducing the finalised concepts for Diving Beetle and Shonisaurus! Once again, massive thank you to ZCI for the art! Diving Beetle: The Ballistic Motorbug Common Name: Diving Beetle Species: Dytiscus scaphopelta (Shield Boat Diving Beetle) Diving Beetle is our homage to an artillery arthropod of creature votes past with our own unique spin! This critter is a lot more whimsical than it's stoic cousin, loving the thrill of zooming across the waves. The Diving Beetle has evolved to almost be like a sea turtle, returning to land to lay its eggs, with the young hiding out in jungles until they've grown large enough to enjoy the surf under the tropical sun. A Bastion Beetle homage wouldn't be complete without a cannon, though with its much smaller and agile frame, shooting the thing can be a challenge. Your beetle will most likely spin out from the strong recoil of its cannonball shooting saddle, though hopefully you'll find this trait as endearing as the TSW team did when we designed it! Taming will involve passive feeding the babies in the wild, then letting them grow up under your care before taking your new Beetleboat out for a test drive! Aside from its powerful artillery, when tamed you can steal a breath of air from underneath its elytra in emergencies! Shonisaurus: The Vortex Hunting Ichthyosaur Common Name: Shonisaurus Species: Shonisaurus voragovenator (Whirlpool Hunting Lizard from Shoshone) This enormous ichthyosaur has a hunting strategy as dangerous as its emboldened allies. Always followed by a group of its smaller relatives, its prescence seems to greatly boost their attacking power, turning otherwise skittish sea reptiles into a dangerous pack hunters! And while you're dealing with an angry group of Ichthyosaurs, their giant commander will be pulling you in! When Shonisaurus opens its maw, it can create a vortex that sucks in smaller creatures, or holds large animals in place! The hapless prey will then either get torn to shreds by the Ichthyosaur swarm, or engulfed by its colossal cousin. To wrangle one of these oceanic giants, allow it to create a vortex and pull you in, then drop as many narcotic items as you can to knock it out before it swallows you! Apart from its powerful arsenal, the Shonisaurus also has enough saddle room for all your friends! EDESTUS MODEL REVEAL Introducing Edestus! This magmatic goblin shark will rip and tear through your enemies with a flaming nose-sword as hot as a 1000º knife through butter! We're very excited for you to be able to ride into battle on The Volcanic Blade! Thanks to Snappin for putting together this reveal and Nitz for bringing the creature to life with his incredible model. NEW CONCEPT ART In addition to the vote winners, we also have a bunch of new and revamped concept art for other creatures on the roster! We've reworked the older art of the Blue Whale, Marine Iguana and Orthocone, and finished our official concept for the Hullrender Hermit Crab! Blue Whale This creature will be the largest living creature on the map, and we've redesigned its niche to be a bit more interesting. Like an organic Stryder, this enormous animal will be host to all kinds of different lifeforms (attachments), which give it different abilities depending on what takes root on its back. Homing fish swarms, nourishing algae and more, this creature will either be a powerful war submarine or your own personal island paradise! Thank you once again to ZCI for the rework! Marine Iguana The lovable semi-aquatic reptile gets a fresh coat of paint! It retains its former niche, an early game mount that's equally comfortable on land as it is in the sea, but we felt the Marine Iguana needed a little more ARK-ification to fit in to our cast of creatures! Thanks to WaterWitch for breathing some new life into our salty sea-beast! Giant Orthocone Orthocone also recieves a long overdue rework to its design. Properly ARKified with a design that is more fitting of its niche, a giant oceanic battering ram that gets stronger the faster it moves! Of course our resident cephalopod enjoyer, ZCI, is the one that graced us with the updated artwork! Hullrender Hermit Crab A previous vote winner itself, our Hermit Crab finally has some art to call its own! Essentially a giant coconut crab (which are members of the hermit family themselves) even its impressive armour pales in comparison to some of the giants that inhabit the waters of the Sunken World. This means it takes to the habits of its smaller relatives, wearing shells as armour. In addition though, it is commonly seen using old shipwrecks that litter the seafloor to use as defense as well! Its powerful claws are skilled at tearing apart shipwrecks for wood, or pinching an enemy into submission! Thanks to RexMyPet for creating this crustacean's concept! COMMUNITY CORNER While we may not have anything to show off yet, we'd love to feature your artwork or videos in the scoop! We'll be opening up a submission channel in our Discord, and will also be accepting any submissions through Twitter (tag us @ARKSunken or with the #SunkenScoop)! We hope to see some of your creations related to all things Sunken! That's all for this massive issue of the Sunken Scoop, thanks for tuning in! Hope you're just excited as we are for all the content reveals, and if you'd like to discuss them further, our discord is the best place to do so! Have a wonderful timezone! If this is your first time seeing TSW, check out the links below to find out more! Please note that if you want to play our mod, you need both the map and creature mod active. 19. Welcome to the very first Sunken Scoop! So what is the Sunken Scoop? Well, much like the official Community Crunches, we at the ARK: The Sunken World (TSW) team thought it'd be a swell idea to release fortnightly/monthly updates on all things Sunken! We may be moving away from the informal concept art/model/etc reveals we do in our discord if people are liking this format! To those unfamiliar with the mod, we are a dedicated team of individuals who are looking to spruce up the ocean biome in the same way that Scorched Earth offered a unique, biome specific challenge to survival. Now with that out of the way, let's get into the news! CREATURE VOTE WINNER Creature votes have been all the rage (in both popularity and some people's attitudes at winners :P) recently, and TSW has joined the bandwagon. This week, we hosted a smaller community vote between 5 creatures: Magyarosaurus, Diving Beetle, Shonisaurus, Cretoxyrhina and Odobenocetops. Well, the results are in... and in an unprecedented turn of events, it's a tie! Our winners are the Diving Beetle, everyone's favourite Ballistic Motor-bug, and Shonisaurus, everyone's equally loved Vortex Hunting Ichthysaur! Due to this unexpected turn of events, why not throw caution to the wind... we're adding them both! A highly manoeuvreable arthropod mount, able to be saddled up with some additional torpedo launchers, and the mothership of the marine reptiles, with a powerful vortex-creating hunting strategy, are going to be wreaking some havoc in TSW's seas! We'll polish up the looks of the two winners in the coming days/weeks and you'll see them join our official roster very soon! Don't fret too much about the other contenders too! We'll be placing them in our "Fish Locker", a collection of shelved ideas that we'd love to add to the mod if time and resources permits us to. No promises, but your favourite may have a shot at redemption! For those curious how the voting went, see here. Big thanks to ZCI for the mockups for these community favourites! NEW CREATURES In addition to the vote winner, we are also adding two new creatures to our roster! Introducing Aquilolamna and Cartorhynchus! Read about their mechanics below, and thanks to ZCI5250 for providing the concept art! Aquilolamna: The Jet-Powered Eagle Shark! Common Name: Aquilolamna Species: Aquilolamna velociptera (Speedy Winged Eagle Shark) Summary: A gracile oddball of a shark that can be found lazily cruising through the sunlit waters. Do not be fooled by its slow speed however, for with a flick of its powerful fins, an Aquilolamna can become the fastest creature in the oceans. It is also surprisingly agile, and is able to turn 180º in an instant. This shark is even able to barrel roll in the water to momentarily give itself a speed boost. On top of that, most Aquilolamna riders fit their saddles with bloody rockets that allow them to boost out of the water and travel impressive distances! Just be careful not to crash into the floor, as your Aquilo will be heavily damaged. Cartorhynchus: Your New Best Friend! Common Name: Cartorhynchus Species: Cartorhynchus adorabilis (Adorable Shortened Snout) Summary: A small inquisitive ichthyosaur found in reefs and deep ocean biomes, they can harness the bioluminescence on their bodies to function as living spotlights. These semi-aquatic reptiles can be domesticated by playing with them. Cartorhynchus seem to be naturally attracted to crop plots and other planter structures, and when domesticated, they'll happily gather from your gardens and distribute fodder crops to nearby feeding troughs. WHAT WE'VE BEEN WORKING ON In addition to the community vote, we've still been hard at work on our huge roster of creatures (with these new additions we're up to 44 custom creatures excluding variants). The big thing we've been working on recently is Ferrodraco ferox - The Feral Iron Dragon. This terrifying pterosaur will be the apex predator of the volcanic islands, and we've given it a quite literal glow up! Here's what the brute's facial patterns and glow regions might look like! This wonderful work was done by Nitz, a highly talented modeller we're lucky to have on the team! Perhaps it'll be safer to live under the sea with this fellow flying around... Thanks for tuning into the first edition of the Sunken Scoop! Please let us know your thoughts on this new way to deliver news, and have a wonderful timezone!
