  1. The choices I have on  the MS windows version to join a game are:

    • UNOFFICIAL PC SESSION
    • PLAYER DEDICATED ARKS
    • NON-DEDICATED ARKS
    • FAVORITES

I have no problem closing the server, I just click on "return to main menu" and it goes back to the main menu. It looks like the 2 versions of the game are not  the same regarding this.  Not sure what I will do on launch day, I will either run a server from the client like I do in ASE or play official until crossplay is fully up in 2024. Then I am looking to join the Norwegian Viking cluster if they are able to set there servers up for ASA.

The problem I have on official is the decay timers, 7 days on unpod dinos and some structures is too hardcore for me.  I want to be able to take vacations or stop playing from time to time.

As for "why when I do that the server never shows up in player dedicated sessions" that's a separate question that needs troubleshooting on a case-by-case basis. It's quite possible that there are settings you need to change on your router in order to allow people to connect to your server, or it could be that you have something configured on your server wrong. Your best bet is to describe the specifics of what you're trying to do and what problems or error messages other people get when they try to find your server or connect to it. If you're not familiar with managing servers and configuring your network it can be pretty confusing and difficult at first.

Thanks for the reply.  I am just using "host/local" option in ark and then "run a dedicated server".  After that I invited my friends to play on it and they join by selecting my xbox account in friends list and then join game.  I have notice that if I let this run for a few days and not restart it, it will show up in "player dedicated ark" .  We were surprise one day when a couple of players we dont know started to join in (the session is not password protected).  This is when I noticed the server was showing up in "player dedicated ark" .  After I restarted it, it stopped showing up.  For some reason it seems the server needs to be up for a few days to start showing up in "Player dedicated ark".

I would not mind hosting a server like that but I need to able to stop the server to take backups of the saved folder and also to reboot my PC.  I have 2 Microsoft accounts, one for the server and one for myself.  I log into the server account in windows to start the server then go back to my own account to work or do something else.

Lack of easy element and tek is a big part of what made some maps great.

After completing the entire game, I would not mind using lesser structures if they gave them the same decay timers as tek. The main reason I build with tek on official is the decay timers. Tek storage and tek gen / Cryofridges (directly on ground) gives you a 60 days delay before you lose your dino/ressources.

That being said, breeding on official is just too hardcore without meawing/incubator and cryopods. Its like youre are doing time in prison.

For awhile it was Rag. But i been replaying on The Center lately, out of nostalgia, and i have a renewed appreciation for that map.

I really loved that map too. During the early days of Ark I was on Scorch. When I played the game years later I did all maps / all boss and we made an outpost near green to do the Arena. Was fun to discover the map.

The problem I have will all old maps is the lack of a way to farm elemental shards. They should put nodes on all maps to make it even.

  5. I have a question regarding servers.  From my understanding, its possible for someone to host a private server on a PC with the steam version of the game but its not possible to do this with the Microsoft store version of the game.

Is that because the tools used to host a steam version are not working with the MS store version?

Am I right to assume that hosting a dedicated server in Ark will be doable?  Note that I never understood why when I do that the server never shows up in player dedicated sessions.

Cryos are the single best addition this games ever had, but theyre not perfect either.

I would run pocket microraptor. It was really fun and people would never expect it.

However I do see the problem with pocket Gigas and their use in PvP. Let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater though.

Having a mandatory 1 or 2 minute period of knocked out cryosickness every time you deploy a pocket dino would solve the issue without completely eliminating all the positives that come with cryos.

I can see a cryosickness in PvP but there is no point of having this in PvE.

  7. Any changes to the decay timers so casual players can take a vacation?

This is major issue to me. My way around it was to have tek generators and cryofridges directly on the ground and Tek storage. That way you could be 30 days off and still retain most of youre dinos and storage.  I say most because you will still lose youre stryders.

Another thing I dont like is the per structure decay.  You cant make a tiki bar without fear or losing the structures in 4 days.  The minimum decay timer should be at least 7 days on all structures.

The lack of cryofridges/cryopods at launch is not helping either. Its like all they want is to have hardcore players than can be on 24/7 ... what kind of business model is this??

  8. Moschops (passive tame in beach areas, no saddles - Level HP and DPS, they are better then they seem)

Ankylosaurus  (easy to get on herbo island, get a low level until you have the kibbles)

Doedicurus (must have to build, same as anky, get a low level until you have kibbles)

Baryonyx (best all around mid-size dino, including cave runs)

Argentavis (Not too hard to get with prime meat. Get an easy low level first and use it to find and pull higher level ones)

==> Later on , get any level Yutyrannus females and one male. its going to be youre egg laying dino for best kibbles.

I have devoted too much time to this game to not be able to take what I want to PS or XBOX.  I've put a link in there somewhere.

I like to breed dinos, it gives me pleasure.  But everyone has their own style of play.  They will play with their friends again soon (I hope that if I succeed, they will continue playing ;))

I decided to leave officials and play on my own Xbox dedicated server a while ago.  We like to breed too so we just set up so its a lot faster than on official to make up for the super breeding dinos trading on officials.  The only drawback in my case is there are no clusters, just one map.

sadly Wildcard didn't make any console save public. But I will be honest: even if those were public, unless those official saves are really small servers (which is really uncommon based on PC Steam/EGS official server) your console would not have enough memory and power to run such saves. Microsoft Store/XBOX crossplay saves could theoretically run on a Windows PC using the Microsoft Store version of ARK that comes with a dedicated server, but there are no public saves sadly.

If you cant run a console server in single player it makes sense they are not releasing them. That being said, cant Nitrado just maintain those servers and ask a small fee per player?

Or if you are in console, learn how to used admin command so you can summon yourself max level tamed dinos to replace what you had. I suggest you run fjordur in single player so you have access to all Island bosses and all engrams and most dinos. In my opinion, its the best all around map to run in single player.

BTW if you have an extra console, its easy to run you're own dedicated server to play with friends. Once you start the dedicated server, invite you're friends to join. For some reason, my server never shows up so its the only way to join it. Make sure to set difficulty to 1 to match official server settings. If youre on Xbox, PC players who have the game from the windows store can join too. (steam version wont work). Note: the dedicated server needs to have its own account and the game. You cant used the same account you play with.

hmmm.....but you at least have the Gold Membership...right? [XBox]

You dont need a gold membership or a gamepass to play on PC (windows or stream).  Not sure if they get a cut from it on consoles, good question.  That being said, you will be able to play ASA without buying it if you have an xbox gamepass and they will get a cut.

Point is you cant maintain servers for free indefinitely, they need a recurring revenue for it.

  12. It looks like a mess, are you able to open a server save in single player at least with an average Pc?

In my opinion they should just start charging for the official servers , its a mistake to give free MMO servers for years for a game you buy once.

Same for Ascended, they should give a limited amount of free official time when you buy the game. Like 1 year free then a small amount per month of 50% off the monthly fee per year.

Free endless MMO servers are money pits, they cost too much to run.

  13. For PvE, they should add a free new structure that would be your main base foundation and limit the range you can build around it. For other places, they can add a free new outpost structure with a small limited range so you can build traps or outpost. This structures should have a limited count you can used.  That would get rid of pillars or players or tribe that abuse the system. The decay timers would be set on that foundation structure decay timer which would increase with the player level and be the same as tek at max level. For tribes, it would be the highest level player in the tribe. Tribes would get an extra outpost structure per player.

Even on PvP servers, they could add the same main base foundation which would protect a very small areas around you're main base to avoid complete wipes.

So basically, an area claim system.

They also need to protect some key areas of maps and make them unbuildable. They started this on new maps, but it need to be a lot more than that.

That being said, that's more of an Ark 2 feature, I dont think they could implement such a feature in time for ASA.

  15. Ark servers are MMO servers, they have nothing to do with the small maps and limited number of players you see in other online games.  There business model is flawed. Of course they cant maintain those servers for free for a game that was bought 7 years ago, its a money pit.  They need to charge a small monthly fee (2$ per month or half price if you buy an annual fee). That being said, the game price should include a 1 year free official access.

One thing i would like to see at some point on Official is an auction house at Obelisks so you can sell pod dinos or other things when offline.
