I've noticed the growing discussion around paid mods recently in the Ark community, which surprised me because I thought the Ark community had given up on the idea of "no paid mods". However, I realized that many in the Ark community might be new to this discussion, especially if they weren't part of earlier debates around modding. So, I wanted to share my thoughts on why paid mods are problematic. I'll keep it brief, but I encourage discussion—just keep it respectful, as this is meant to foster insight and constructive dialogue. For context: I’m a modder with extensive experience in creating, editing, and experimenting with mods. I tend to cringe when I hear statements like 'Modders should be paid for their time.' There’s no inherent entitlement to payment—it’s not a job, it's a hobby. People do it for personal satisfaction, and part of the joy comes from sharing your work with others and seeing them enjoy it. That said, if you want to turn your hobby into a job or make money from it (like with premium mods), then you should enter a whole different realm with different rules. This includes responsibilities toward those who aren’t just fans anymore—they're paying customers. With that comes criticism, expectations, and the need to deliver on time. The same applies to commissioned mods. 1. The Cost Issue: The idea of charging $2–20 per mod quickly becomes financially restrictive for users. Mods are meant to customize and enhance your gaming experience, and some players use a handful while others use hundreds. Paying for each mod would limit the creative possibilities, making it harder to tailor the game to your liking. Moreover, Wildcard hasn't implemented a system where mods on servers don't require every player to purchase them, and it seems unlikely they will, possibly due to profit motives. 2. Unreliable Products: Mods are often plagued with bugs, incompatibilities, and other issues. Even with paid mods, these problems won’t disappear, and support can be inconsistent. When modders stop maintaining their work, users might end up paying for something that doesn’t function as expected. The community-driven support that steps in when mods are free could dwindle if modding becomes a pay-to-play environment. There are also already many unfinished mods being sold... Which a whole other issue. 3. Premium Mods gate Unofficial Servers: When hosting an Ark server, whether it's dedicated, self-hosted, or privately owned, players must purchase all DLC and premium mods themselves in order to join and play if the server has them installed. The server or session will not allow you to join otherwise. This creates a barrier for private server owners, like myself and others, as we're forced to avoid using DLC or premium mods. It's also creates a barrier for players who just want to play with friends. No one wants to pay extra just to play with friends or a group on unofficial servers, where 99% of the player base actually plays. As you know, the official Ark servers are notoriously bad for countless reasons, making unofficial servers the preferred choice. For those who want to support modders, there are plenty of optional ways to do so. Many modders accept donations through platforms like Nexus, Ko-fi, Patreon, PayPal, or have monetized YouTube channels. These are great ways to show support without putting a paywall around our community, which ultimately undermines the spirit of modding. As for Ark ASA. I would encourage you at least for now, to give the game a negative review on whatever platform you play. Unless Wildcards sees that players are not going to tolerate a certain behavior, they will just keep pushing it. And above all else, don't purchase paid mods, you aren't actually helping the game, or that creator. It's a cycle of exploitation that never should have been started. Just look at Bethesda...1 point

I love ark, I’ve been a player for a long time. I as a player understand no games are perfect but ark ascended is very far from perfect. There are somethings that I dislike so much it makes me not want to play ark ascended (and to be clear I have stoped playing it.) If these things don’t change you’re going to alienate your fans. As loyal as ark fans are, you’re going to loose them. (An in game shop with in game currency where you sell skins or even special shoulder pets or chibis but nothing powerful nothing game changing.) •Pay to win. No players like pay to win stuff in games. It’s a nasty way to squeeze money out of your players. I’m mostly taking about the tames here. I don’t mind a battle pass but don’t keep power behind a pay wall. Paying for the ability to tame a creature is not the same as buying a whole map and getting map exclusive creatures. • Broken promises. There has been countless times when the community have been promised something and it was not delivered. It’s not just release dates. Ark ascended was meant to be free originally. You’re making your fans trust you less, do better. (Better Communication) • single player. (I like taking breaks from ark and not losing my tames, I can’t do that on a server because of decay times but single player is neglected.) you can’t transfer without being kicked from your own tribe, you can’t play with someone else unless they follow your player character around. It needs some tlc. • Bugs. Arks always been buggy and that’s not changed with ascended. I hope this is received in the caring and constructive spirit in which it was meant. I do genuinely care about ark ascended and ark as a whole and from what I have heard the devs are lovely and also care about the game. I want ark to be a game where everyone is enjoying it and the community feels like they’ve been treated fair and that also makes lots of money. I want you to thrive.1 point

From my (somewhat novice) perspective to the paid-mod debate, I find #3 your strongest point. Very well-composed post. I haven't bought any paid mods, and will think more about this dynamic before fully deciding... but am likely to adopt your approach.1 point

I hope ASA runs the IP into the ground and Snail has to sell. Best thing for the game would be a new publisher and a dev team that can actually program a game correctly and fix bugs. With this current ownership and dev team the game will always be a shell of what it could be.1 point

Apparently, they changed something already. I tried to go to the caverns of lost. Hope with two different Deinosuchus. I went in with only a scuba tank and cactus broth. Aggrieved the elks right from the start followed by Megs… I was dead within one minute. Haha. On another note the xiphactin wernt there at the time so somebody recently ran the cave and killed them or perhaps the DEVs figured out the problem and reduced the count? Only time will tell.1 point

you can try running it without a tame, buffed by cactus broth. another thing that i havent tested yet is deinosuchus. someone claimed they dont evem aggro gigas. might just be a free pass to slip by anything in there.1 point

Imo Lost Hope was always one of hte harder caves to complete. That and the massive hard ice cave. When we originally did it on ASE we used platform Mosa with auto turrets along with stong Basilos. This was prior to the new additions - or even the Megaladon bleed. ASA we did it using a pack of megalodons (bleed rips most things in there) and with pack bonus they are pretty lethal - whilst mouted on strong basilos to prevent eels/jellies causing issues. We actually found the "easy" underwater cave more difficult as it seemed to overspawn with multiple alphas in there on what once used to be solo farmable with just a single basilo. This I had to slowly build up in the cave to try and prevent as many spawns happening in order to clear it reliably without losing everything each time.1 point

Aight, I'm not a fan of official to be honest. And I've heard about some issues about this tho. Good that you've figured it out, looks to me its time to relocate your base a tad. Or leave offi1 point

Steam Proton has been enabled by default on ARK: Survival Evolved for Steam Linux players, include complete BattlEye support. If you are experiencing any issues with the Proton version of the game, please let us know in this thread and we'll work with Valve (Steam) to get these resolved as soon as possible. Describe the issue you're experiencing: Outline in clear steps how you are achieving this issue: Is this on the Steam Deck or a Linux OS machine: If it's a Linux Machine, what version of Linux are you using: Any additional information which you think could help us resolve the problem: Players can still continue to play using the legacy Native Linux version of ARK, which can be accessed by: From your Steam games library, right-click on ARK: Survival Evolved and choose Properties. From this new window you’ll click on BETAS at the top. Here is where you’ll swap between the Linux native version and the live version of the game. Choose the beta called "linuxnative" from the drop down list and then close the Properties window once the window says it has successfully accessed the beta. Your Steam client will begin to download the Linux native version of the game. If you're experiencing any problems accessing the native version, let us know and we'll investigate.1 point

If a premium mod is removed from CurseForge for any reason, will there be any support (refunds etc.) for players? Right now I'm playing on a paid premium map. It's a beautiful map. However, part of it is very clearly infringing on another game's copyright in terms of map design, and this was NOT a part available in the preview, free map. Maybe nobody will care, and that's fine--if it were NOT premium I'm 100% sure it'd just be seen as a cool homage. And it's only a couple bucks. I don't WANT it to get pulled. But this made me wonder: if that DOES happen, what's the situation afterward? Does WildCard and/or CurseForge refund those of us who paid? There seems to be little to no actual oversight--unfinished mods are being sold as 'early access' etc.; so what if they're never finished? Is this purely "buyer beware, if it goes bad, nothing we can do?"1 point

BTW, I fixed the problem. I realized after much searching that my drive was formatted NTFS. I copied the files off (with Steam closed), as moving them was not allowed. Then I formatted the drive to Ext4, moved the files back, and this game and other I had issues with loaded up just fine.1 point

I’m using a Linux mint 20.3 Cinnamon, cinnamon version 5.2.7 i opted into linuxnative beta, downloaded it, and have tried forcing proton 7.0-3 I’ve cleared the cache and verified the files but when I try to launch it loops back to the play button. I have 123 gb available. Honestly I just bought this July 5 and haven’t been able to play it yet. I really love ark though and hope I’ll be able to play it soon1 point

Hey Survivors, Total Bounty Payments as of the 31st of May 2022: $65,780 We provide bounties for anyone who can report hacks or exploits of any kind (which are NOT aimbots/esp/speed hacks) that can have a serious impact on gameplay or server stability on our official, online servers. Feel free to reach out to the following emails with details: [email protected] We will naturally evaluate EVERY submission that comes our way, and if we determine that the issue falls outside the scope of "hacks", but still qualifies as an extremely critical bug (such as wide-scale easy duping, or methods of crashing the server, etc.), we are happy to still pay out bounties. Please mention in your email subject you are contacting us regarding an exploit. We will not be responding to every incoming email, but we will check them all-- if we see something that is promising, or that we're not already aware of, we will reach out to those individuals who provide that information and correspond with them. We are only concerned about ONLINE, MULTIPLAYER issues that can be done on our OFFICIAL SERVERS. table, th, td { border: 1px solid black; border-collapse: collapse; } th, td { padding: 5px; } th { text-align: left; } Date Name Exploit Amount Status 24/06/2015 LMarschall Dupe Exploit 200$ PAID 26/06/2015 Marco Crash Exploit 200$ PAID 25/07/2015 Thorami Validation Exploit 200$ PAID 25/08/2015 Thorami Validation Exploit 200$ PAID 09/09/2015 Dan K Duping Exploit 200$ PAID 15/09/2015 Thorami Validation Exploit 200$ PAID 21/09/2015 DKayBee Network Overload Exploit 200$ PAID 24/09/2015 Skittle PvP Timer Exploit 100$ PAID 24/09/2015 Rob PvP Timer Exploit 100$ PAID 5/10/2015 Karl No Clip Exploit 200$ PAID 14/10/2015 r2ghgaming Invulnerability Exploit 200$ PAID 22/10/2015 Thorami No Clip Exploit 200$ PAID 25/10/2015 Creston Raft Exploit 200$ PAID 12/11/2015 Static Animation Cancelling Exploit 200$ PAID 15/12/2015 Rudy Tribe Glitch 500$ PAID 15/12/2015 Sam Tribe Glitch 500$ PAID 09/01/2016 Skittle Kangaroo Exploit 100$ PAID 09/01/2016 Rob Kangaroo Exploit 100$ PAID 03/04/2016 SubscribeCC Alternative Platform Crash 200$ PAID 20/04/2016 Skittle C4 Exploit 100$ PAID 20/04/2016 Rob C4 Exploit 100$ PAID 20/07/2016 Shockbuster Clipping Exploit 200$ PAID 27/08/2016 A.
