  1. There's just a lot less community facing things to report this week. Every week won't be a heavy news week. There's lots happening in the background that we'll be talking about soon enough though.

  2. Some people enjoy looking at the fan art. Just because there's no news worthy news this week doesn't mean they shouldn't show-off players fan art. If there was no Community Crunch because there was no news then people would complain that there was no Crunch. So it's best all round if the people that enjoy looking at fan art enjoy reading this, and those that aren't interested in the fan art just carry on with what they were doing. At the end of the day there's nothing worth making a mountain out of a molehill here by moaning about it.

  3. Scorched Earth, private server, two of us... We have managed to build most of our infrastructure now up through cryofridges and we are still working on an industrial forge. We have Argys hatching over level 200 and we are still looking for high level Megatherium and Rexes. I have found all three caves on Scorched Earth (in the crevasse to the Southwest, in the mountains to the Northwest, and in the desert ruins in the South), but we have not attempted to enter them. We will probably wait until we have high-level Megatherium to combat Mantises that I imagine will be swarming in the caves. I may do some testing with Megatherium vs. Mantises in the desert sends to see exactly how tough are these new beasties (my sole encounter was when my Argy survived a single hit from a Mantis when I was flying low searching a ruin). I see Wyverns flying overhead near the trench and I cower under an overhang hoping they do not see me. Our plan is to breed 40 or so Argys, grab a Wyvern egg, and fly through the cloud of Argys with the egg and hope that they will take care of the swarm of Wyverns that will be chasing the egg thief. After reading about Cymas dogfighting a Wyvern on an Argy (a couple of pages back in this thread), I am tempted to try it with a "disposable" Argy just to see how tough the Wyverns are. I, of course, am always disposable. Scorched Earth feels so different from The Island I think mostly because of the line of sight distances. You can see almost everywhere on Scorched Earth, but everything is camouflaged and hidden. It seems a bit easier, but I think that may be just because we know what to expect from Ark and the type of things on which to concentrate. Snails are also one of our high-priority luxuries. We really could use lots of cementing paste and organic polymer. We finally got a beehive for the honey to make Sweet Vegetable Cake to tame a snail. As far as I can tell, I think that he only beehives on Scorched Earth are in the crevasse to the Southwest. It took us a bit of effort since the Queen Bee did not fall to the ground, but instead got stuck on a ledge where I could barely crouch. I only had to die once to figure out that the Queen will not eat at all (she eats only rare flowers) unless you are wearing insect repellent and some amount of ghillie armor. Draining the hive now that it is tamed only takes insect repellent. Note that the Ghillie armor that we used was from drops since we cannot make it without organic polymer (from snails or possibly by killing Mantises).

  4. In all my ark experiences, today was probably the lowest point. I made a mortar and pestle, refining forge, smithy, bed, cooming pot, and campfire at my new base. I farmed up oil, metal, element shards, and gems. That's all good, right? Yup. The bad part came later. I was checking out the fabled glowtail and megalainia caverns. They never load in right away, and you can see through the ceiling for a bit. As I flew through, they finished loading, and I was too high and became trapped in the mesh. My character was "swimming" for some reason, and so I swam down, fell out from the ceiling, and took fatal fall damage. I returned via griffin, and found a light and my wyvern, but no body or jerboa. Left off wasting metal on new, inferior tools, and without nine or so cryopods. Tomorrow, I kinda want to return to The Island.

  5. Not much going on over the week but I found some time on the weekend. Lots more building, of course. I don't want to even hazard a guess as to the raw cost of this base... More importantly, I successfully acquired a pair of yutyrannus. I would consider them a keystone tame, as important as argents or ankys in the grand scheme of things for their overall impact. A source of yuty eggs means kibble time, so I got a hive up and going, boy was that tedious and annoying. And crops, of course. I also made a huge discovery. I found the phoenix! Unfortunately I've failed twice at taming it. My wyvern isn't powerful enough and I've been having trouble using the pillar trick to find the ashes, even seeing where it fell. So I'm both excited to have it nearby and frustrated that I can't seem to tame it. It's event colors too... That's pretty much it. As far as builds go this base is rather intricate so most of my time is taken up with that. I'm quite happy with how it's turning out, but it'll be a long time before I'm ready to share the finished base.

  6. Moved to the floating islands and made a nice base, not as big as I hoped, but it still can be expanded upon. Took a lot of work anyway. I still need to put down a lot of stuff; all I have is a large storage box. A mantis would be amazing, but I'd need to get horns on Rag, and I don't feel like doing anymore transferring. I don't know what I want to do tomorrow, after getting crafting stations made, and making a pump shotgun, since normal shotguns are painful to use with their tiny AoE and only two shots at once. It feels premature, but the boss really isn't too hard to defeat. High-level rexes are plentiful on all non-stories, although I seemed to have better luck on Ragnarok than Crystal Isles, when it came to finding good dinos. The Center is supposed to have really reliable spawns, but I don't know where I should spawn myself in, since I haven't played there, and how near the obelisks would be. Of course all the non-story boss fights/mini bosses seem fun. The Center Arena, the Ragnarok arena, the iceworm queen, maybe someday Life's Labyrinth, although transferring artifacts seems more appealing than that crazy place, the lava elemental, but then again, that fight is really rough with just one person, the Valguero Arena, and of course, the crystal wyvern queen. Unlike The Island, being ready for the boss fights doesn't seem like a dead end.

  7. Something has apparently changed with work internet so i have been unable to access my server. Instead I started fresh single player on Val for a few days until I go home. Worked my way up to taming my first Ptera. Lvl 50, not bad. As im waiting for it to tame, a 145 lands near by. Tranqued it before shutting down for the night.

  8. (Posts: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6) Today's lesson that I was taught was to not get too complacent. In general, it's good to be able to keep calm under pressure, that way mistakes are lessened in the heat of the moment. However, blithe complacency can be deadly. I learned this the hard way today. I spent a lot of today in and out of the wyvern cove, diving for eggs, intending to hatch high levels and save low levels for kibble to begin taming therizinosaurs. I was doing this with my newly hatched, base 155 lightning wyvern from the last post named Queen Sinclair. This was going quite well. I had newly acquired a snow owl and every time I'd fall below a certain threshold of health, I'd circle the cavern to lose some wyverns on my tail and then swoop out of the cave. However, on my last run, I got hung on the corner and had quite the few wyverns behind me. In my panic, realizing I was going to die if I didn't do something, I dove down. I dove too far down and hit water. Queen Sinclair flew off back into the cave while I was swimming for my life. I whistled for her to follow, and jumped back on her... just in time for her to die to a poison wyvern. I was able to come back and retrieve my cryo'd snow owl and the rest of my belongings on Nightfall the griffin, but it was bittersweet at best. I was waiting on my other lightning I recently hatched, Tulip Rose, to finish raising and then I was going to retire Queen Sinclair to cryo until I could clone her, and then I'd just use the clones and/or other lightnings for general use. Sadly, that will not be the case. My new plan for egg diving is to get a lightning wyvern leveled in sheer health, some stam, and melee, preferably more health, to just tank and destroy all the wyverns in the cove and then swoop back in and gather the eggs left behind--and one that isn't event colors. Tulip Rose isn't event colored and is higher level than Queen Sinclair was, so I'm going to try to do more egg diving with her in the future, and be much more careful and mindful of my surroundings. I should not have tried to exit the cove with that many wyverns on my tail - I should have turned and lost some before attempting my exit. I had the stamina. I am very sad to say we have had to say goodbye to Queen Sinclair today (Lightning Wyvern), but we did welcome quite a few new faces: Linkin Park (Poison Wyvern), Symbiote (Poison Wyvern), Tulip Rose (Lightning Wyvern), Calico (Therizinosaur), and Heartbreaker (Yutyrannus). The goal is now to get Tulip Rose grown and continue diving for eggs, continue making extraordinary kibble using low level wyvern eggs and yuty eggs, and tame more high level therizinos (Calico didn't have any spectacular stats after taming). Learn from my mistakes guys, don't get complacent, pay attention, and quite frankly, just don't use anything you aren't ready to lose. ?‍♂️

  9. Well, it's hard to sum up several days worth of play at once, but here goes: Mostly base building, it's coming along. The problem with doing large, intricate builds is that you can farm and build for literally days at a time without adding to your functional infrastructure. That said, I've made some notable additions. I also love this base location more and more each time I discover something new. The sharp eye will observe a wind turbine to the right. It turns out just a few steps away from my base is the start of a dune area, which happens to have 100% wind all the time. I admit I was excited to put it up just because I've always loved the aesthetic, but since they're useless on any other map I've never had one before. So that's all set up and wired and I have my backup generator hidden within the perimeter of the base. If I was RPing I would play this as kind of stumbling across a ruined temple/palace and rebuilding it, so that's the vibe I'm going for in the build. Maybe I'll do an imgur gallery when I'm done, I can't really showcase too much of the interior like this. Also notable, in the back left corner is an industrial forge. I actually lost my original argent to a rock elemental while farming the metal for that. I am really starting to hate those things, they always seem to pop up exactly where they're the most unwanted. My anky luckily survived. Kind of goes back to what I was saying about loving my base location, metal isn't very far away. We were able to run back with a minimum of difficulty. I bred a new argent from the birds I tamed last weekend too, wouldn't want to risk losing one of them after all. Doesn't have a name yet but he's quite the working bird. Also build a chem bench to make it way easier to make clay. I guess that's my other major issue with a large build, usually by the time I've managed to make the higher tier crafting stations I'm done most of what I was going to use them for in the first place...not that I'm going to stop needing clay for a long, long time. A whole week of farming and building got me a completed exterior wall and my second floor built and not much else. I've also been taking time to run the wyvern trench regularly. Mostly kibble quality eggs but...but...I got a 190 lightning wyvern egg. Not going to hatch it until I've set up a good wyvern trap by the trench for milk. I could be lazy and use a cryopod to reset the imprint if it needs milk but I don't want to take all the challenge out of the map. I honestly feel like I got my fire wyvern too early because of how much it trivialized everything. Ah well, I've still been having a lot of fun here. And I think this is the cleanest build I've ever done. I guess you could say it's my take on a box base.

  10. (Posts: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5) Last few days have just been locating and taming more yutyrannus as well as working on getting another lightning wyvern. Unfortunately, Remus can be counted as a casualty, and not through any fault of our own. I had forgotten I had broken some rocks within my base's perimeter and I parked him on top of where they would respawn after coming back from yuty taming. When I logged in the next day... Plenty of rocks, but no Remus. This is a bug that has been going on for a while that I had sadly forgotten about. Rest in peace, Remus, you will be missed. However, perhaps Remus dying and forcing me to look for a new lightning wyvern wasn't such a bad thing.... Meet Queen Sinclair! I absolutely ADORE her. Not only is she a far better level than Remus (level 155 compared to level 100) but she has these glorious event colors. A fully event colored decent leveled wyvern!! I am honestly strongly considering against even using her as a main wyvern and going to find yet another lightning with my griffin to use as my main source of travel/egg stealing. I could probably get away with stealing eggs with her for a while, but between lag and the fact some asshat has build turrets next to the scar on Ragnarok, I'm not sure if I want to... I honestly just want to cryo her and save her for cloning. Regardless, I'm very happy with her and very much look forward to her all grown up! Other than that, I have tamed two other junk female yutys for egg-laying purposes, named Dragonair and Death Valley. Dragonair had cool greens and blues as far as event colors go, though, so I'm pretty stoked to have discovered her. I actually noticed her on accident while scurrying back home with Queen Sinclair's egg. Outside of that, I have just been doing a lot of resource grinding, working on bettering the crafting areas and such. Nothing much to report there. Today, we welcome Queen Sinclair (Lightning Wyvern), Dragonair (Yutyrannus), and Death Valley (Yutyrannus) to the fold! Sadly, we had to say goodbye to Remus (Lightning Wyvern) yesterday... Better times ahead.

  11. Last few days really but I've been getting back into ARK and finding inpsiration in the new Crystal Isles map so been doing some builds. I did a tree house, an ocean platform fish pond fort and just completed my house in the cold zone to keep us warm and provide some comfort when doing gem/black pearl runs. Couple views from the edge of the ledge looking onto the house. Ground floor view with under stair storage. Under stair storage View out to the world Upper deck - cooking and bedrooms. 4 bedrooms - 2 each side in the wood towers. My bedroom - others similar but different furnishing layout.

  12. @d1nk Yeah it didn't go well lol, but I won so who cares. I'm really glad I did that on alpha though so I don't have to worry about ever doing it again if I don't want to. Scorched Earth, day four: Uneventful day of building. This is the rear view of my outer perimeter wall, well half of the front anyway. After I finished this section of the wall I took a break to run some drops. Best item of the day, an ascendant crossbow. I did peek in the wyvern trench and have spotted no less than 3 alphas. Gonna need a bigger wyvern..

  13. Scorched Earth, day three: Is this the most extra taming pen in the history of taming pens? Yes. Is it also the most fun I've ever had building a taming pen? Also yes. Side note the covered plaza next to it does actually give the house buff. Makes it so I don't have to run back and forth if a weather event pops up during a tame. The vessels are mostly there for decoration. The line of foundations is actually my as yet unbuilt perimeter wall. I did do some work on that as well, but I am in dire need of better utility animals. I also tamed a Tek Parasaur, which sounds like a useless tame except I'll be using it much, much later to find a very special trophy tame I've wanted for literally years. But anyway yeah I'm really having fun with this map. I haven't been this inspired to build in ages and I think a new map was actually the change of pace I desperately needed in this game.

  14. Scorched Earth, day two: I just want to say, I absolutely did not plan nor intend to get a wyvern this early. But as I've been doing the grind on the base, I've been taking breaks on and off to do other things. One of those included the 3 argents in the back, there's one low level and two high levels. I've been taking the low level one out to scout around and get the lay of the land, doesn't matter if it dies since I have the other two significantly better ones. I've been trying not to spoil too many details for myself but having watched multiple series about this map obviously I do know some things. I didn't actively intend to fly all the way to the wyvern trench as that's quite far from my base. But I was checking out the obelisks and happened to fly close to the end of it. I peeked down into it and didn't really see any wyverns around, I've spotted the rare one flying about here and there in other places but the trench appeared to be empty. I flew closer to get a better look and noticed a nest. Obviously, Ark is 90% preparation, but fortune favors the bold too. We winged quickly into the alcove and waited for stamina rather nervously. Then I hopped off, grabbed the egg and we took off as fast as an argent can fly, which is to say not very fast at all. Our little stunt raid did not go unnoticed as we pulled the interest of the fire wyvern parent below. It was a harrowing flight on this barely midlevel bird as we juked and dodged, avoiding fire breaths as much as possible while taking the occasional bite. Flying close to the mountains and trying to lose aggro while our stamina and HP steadily dropped. It was a very, very, very close call, one I wish I had recorded because it was wild. I've run wyverns on Ragnarok enough, but this was something else. The wyvern itself is nothing special, only level 30 and I only got one imprint on it before it wanted milk. Given that I have virtually no infrastructure right now, that wasn't about to happen. Yes, my settings are unintentionally high enough that it can grow up without milk and not starve. Anyway. This wyvern is absolute trash but it has one purpose and one purpose only: to steal more, better eggs. So it's going to get stamina and maybe some HP, honestly at that level it really isn't going to make a difference. But that's a long way off, of course. Can't say I'm not immensely pleased with the day's events, but I'm a long ways away from taking any more field trips into the trench. I have a base to build and I've barely begun.
