Scorched Earth Technical/Detail FAQ! (Ongoing)

Recommended Posts

Have those of you having big issues (loss of items, etc) tried validating and/or backing up your Save folder and reinstalling server files (provided you aren't on host or your host supports it)?

Added: As for buffer overflow issue have you tried raising your ulimits if linux server?

Raise ulimit

in /etc/sysctl.conf add the following at the end of the file:

fs.file-max=200000

in /etc/security/limits.conf add the following:

* soft nofile 200000
* hard nofile 200000

This would require the entire Scorched Earth map to be hidden underneath The Island.
That's where the boss arenas are hiding, they're not on another server. Just fyi

@Jeremy
Will we in the future get the option to transfer dinos to the Obelisk? Not to get them to Scorched Earth, but to get dinos from official servers to unofficial. My girlfriend has many animals she has to keep fed and unclaimable every week.
The Scorched Earth obelisks could simply spot that the animal/items were uploaded from The Island and not allowed them to come through to keep the balance intact.

i understand that there under the map. so isn't it possible to release a version that's a map extension for those of us who don't mind the extra lag here and there that i'm sure would come with it so this way at lease everyone who bought the DLC and make use of it with out paying expensive server bills every month for not one but 2 servers just to enjoy the DLC properly ? i really don't see what would be so difficult about doing that coding wise it seems pretty easy to convert a striped down or downsized version of the SE map if need be into a map extension if not the full map . i hope this eventually becomes a thing because other than the optimizations and such this should be something near the top of your to-do list to help make ARK the best it can be for everyone not just the more wealthy payers/serverowners

Hey all,

With Scorched Earth released, there are a lot of technical questions about the various features of the new content on PC and Xbox. So without further ado, I'll be using this space as an info/note scratchpad for info about how Scorched Earth works, for power-users and generally curious Survivors. This thread will be updated constantly throughout the coming days, until it contains all the pertinent information. We'll leave game/content design questions for discussion elsewhere -- gotta keep this manageable

  • How Cross-ARK Data Transfer works:
  1. For Officials, you can 'upload' Survivors from TheIsland or TheCenter via the "ARK Tribute" option available at any Supply Crate or Tribute Terminal. You can then 'download' these Survivors onto an Official ScorchedEarth Server of that same game mode. Currently only Survivors are allowed to travel TO ScorchedEarth (they can not have any items on them), in order to keep it balanced for the time being. However, FROM ScorchedEarth you can transfer Survivors, Items, and Dinos, which you can then download (via the ARK Tribute) onto TheIsland or TheCenter. So indeed you can bring all ScorchedEarth Items, Dinos, and Survivors (and thus Scorched Earth Engrams) onto TheIsland or TheCenter to extend your capabilities there. When transferring a Survivor between ARKs using this method, Tribes should be retained. However Alliances will not be retained, and will need to be re-setup on the other side.
  2. For Unofficial Servers, if they wish to allow dynamic Cross-ARK Travel, they will need to run two Servers on the same box from the same directory, and then you can launch with the following commandlines:
    ShooterGameServer.exe ScorchedEarth_P?SessionName=MySession1?AltSaveDirectoryName=Save1 -NoTransferFromFiltering -clusterid=mycluster123
    ShooterGameServer.exe TheIsland?SessionName=MySession2?AltSaveDirectoryName=Save2  -NoTransferFromFiltering  -clusterid=mycluster123

    (the clusterid must be the same between the servers!)
    (to avoid saves from clashing each server should use distinct values for: ?AltSaveDirectoryName=<SaveFolderName>)

    you also have options like:
    ?PreventDownloadSurvivors=False
    ?PreventDownloadItems=False
    ?PreventDownloadDinos=False
    ?PreventUploadSurvivors=False
    ?PreventUploadItems=False
    ?PreventUploadDinos=False

  3. Meanwhile in singleplayer, you can just use the "ARK Tribute" option and then go back to the main menu and host on the other map, and download your data accordingly. We will streamline this process soon as well.

  • How To Transfer Characters (Official Servers):

You may only Travel from the Island or Center to Scorched Earth, and from Scorched Earth to the Island or Center. You may not travel from the Island to the Center, or vice versa directly. You must be carrying no items in your inventory, including equipped armor.

  1. To initiate a character transfer, access the inventory of either an obelisk or a supply drop beacon.
  2. Click on the button in the top right corner of your screen, labelled "TRAVEL TO ANOTHER ARK!"
  3. A server list will appear, select your intended destination server.
  4. Click the "Join w/Survivor" button in the bottom left of the screen.
  5. You will now load a new session on the target destination server.
  6. Select your preferred spawn point and click on "Spawn Survivor."

  • How To Transfer Items and Creatures:

You may only take items and creatures from Scorched Earth to the Island or the Center, you cannot bring creatures or items to Scorched Earth.

  1. To transfer items and tamed creatures,  access the inventory of either an obelisk or a supply drop beacon.
  2. Click on the button centered at the top of the screen labelled "TRANSMIT ARK DATA"
  3. On the new user interface that appears, you can drag and drop items into the ark for server transfer.
  4. Below you will find the "UPLOAD CREATURES DATA" button, click this to upload animals.
  5. A new creature upload user interface will appear, select the creature you wish to upload.
  6. Press upload creature.
  7. To download items and creatures its the same steps as above, except you need to drag items out of the ark, and use the "DOWNLOAD CREATURES DATA" button.

  • How to Host ScorchedEarth dedicated server
  1. Just like a regular ARK dedicated server, except the map name is "ScorchedEarth_P". You do not need to own Scorched Earth to host the map via dedicated server, of course.

  • NVIDIA Ansel and new Cinematic Depth of Field UI
  1. To use NVIDIA Ansel (requires NVIDIA hardware) to take super-cool 360 degree (optionally stereoscopic) screenshots and Super-Resolution screenshots, run the game with the "Launch ARK with NVIDIA Ansel" option on Steam (or run with -allowansel), then specifically in a singleplayer game (without a UI open) press Alt-F2. With the Ansel overlay open, you can alter the various capture settings, and snap away (you can also drag the mouse and use WSAD keys to move the camera)! Personally I recommend entering ARK spectator mode beforehand with the "enablespectator" console command, and there is a new "Depth of Field" menu you can access in Spectator mode by pressing the [Delete] key, which allows you to control and save cinematic depth of field fx (very useful for cinematics creators as well). Note if you're taking 360 degree panoramic screenshots, we recommend leveling the spectator camera with the [Home] key before you open the Ansel UI, otherwise your panoramic screenshot might appear screwed. Have fun and let your inner nature photographer run wild!

  • Scorched Earth Cosmetics
  1. If you own Scorched Earth, you'll gain immediate access to the "Safari Hat" and "ARK Thorny Dragon Saddle" cosmetic skins. They're pretty nifty! There are more cosmetics to be gained as rewards within the Scorched Earth map as well.

  • Size of PC Update
  1. The PC update was so large because we repacked nearly all Textures in the game (using mip sharpening to make them look better), and all meshes (removing unused secondary UV's to save memory), and all Shaders (to support a new SkyLight rendering technique). We had to do this at some point for visual and memory reasons, and determined that this large update was the right time to go ahead and make this one-off change.

  • Primitive+ on ScorchedEarth
  1. The Primitive+ TC is not currently officially supported on ScorchedEarth -- it will be soon, but first we need to have Cedric go through and make sure that you can actually, you know, survive on the map using such simple tools! That will happen in September, and we'll then host some respective servers for that configuration too.

  • Xbox TheCenter Update
  1. It's being worked on, and will be released in September.

  • PC TheCenter Update, Archaopteryx, Tapejara
  1. These are being wrapped up and should be released in about a week. Stay tuned for them!

  • Scorched Earth Dino & Item codes
    Here are the various Dino & Item codes for the Scorched Earth content. Even if you don't own Scorched Earth, you're welcome to spawn/add these to your server or non-ScorchedEarth game to try them out and add more variety. Have fun!

  • Modding Scorched Earth
  1. The Scorched Earth content will be made available for Modding (as part of the main ARK Dev Kit) in a couple weeks. Gotta package it all up for a massive devkit update. In the meantime, as far as we know, existing Mods should work fine on Scorched Earth itself.

  • More Scorched Earth Official Servers
  1. We will be adding more ScorchedEarth Official Servers shortly, including more Asia Scorched Earth Servers, OC Scorched Earth Servers, and more Xbox Servers.

  • Why does the Jerboa not warn of weather events on TheIsland/TheCenter, and what about Wind Turbines on TheIsland/TheCenter?
  1. I'll be getting those fixed up to work on all maps early next week. And yes, the Jerboa's sound & animation is different depending on which weather event it is predicting.

  • Can the Mantis wield any melee weapon?
  1. All except for the Stun Prod & Chainsaw!

  • What about Primitive Scorched Earth servers, Engrams list?
  1. Properly configured Primitive Scorched Earth servers will be going up now, and to host your own, here's the INI and the Engrams list: http://steamcommunity.com/app/346110/discussions/10/535150948605081777/

  • Why is my generator taking damage on Scorched Earth, and why are my water containers leaking?
  1. Due to the intense heat, generators take damage when powered on Scorched Earth, and most water-containers have the water evaporate over time. Use clean-energy Wind Turbines (at a high-wind location), Molleratops and Water Wells for longer-term water needs!

  • Why is my screen all white-streaked and my view input oscillating?
  1. You have likely spent too much time in the heat, and have become seriously heatstroked! Cool yourself down to de-heatstroke, and you can also now make Ice Water by putting a filled waterjar or canteen into a Fridge for 60 seconds, which will cool you down even faster when you drink it (and iced water provides general hyperthermic insulation so it's good to have on you in hot climates!)

My Center non dedicated map has been lagging frequently overall in the map and extremely in the area with coords  36.9, 58.7. Also as of since Sunday at some point my Center map has been crashing usually when I try to save either by simply exiting the game or using the saveworld command. Also on my Center map the Mosasaur cannot move properly when at the surface.

Hi everyone,

I have two serveur, I enabled corss ark travel as indicated above, but everytime i transfert my player to the other server via the obelisk, it is deleted, i have the screen to respawn, I click respawn, I wait 2 to 5 secondes, then i have the screen to create a new player.

I have the two server on same version, modded, one on theIsland and the other on ScrotchedEarth.

If anyone can help me to find a solution, pls help.

thanks a lot for your consideration

Network Failure Message: Outgoing reliable buffer overflow

I am hosting three server, TheIsland, TheCenter, and Scorched Earth. All three are cluster servers. I had this message whenever someone tries to Travel to another Ark. This causes the player to disconnect from server and presented the main menu. Upon entering back to the destination server it seems fine with lost of items at times. I am hosting two server with one machine and the other server to a separate machine. I am sharing the [Cluster] folder using "Syncthing" application across LAN. Some players don't have this issue but some players experience it quite often.

Raise ulimit

in /etc/sysctl.conf add the following at the end of the file:

fs.file-max=200000

in /etc/security/limits.conf add the following:

* soft nofile 200000
* hard nofile 200000

Update AND validate server, if that doesnt work.

Change upload limits to 1mb. I have found that 200k is not quite enough (for heavily modded servers or for survivors that have built a lot/have a lot in storage). Windows defaults to 28mb

Raise ulimit

in /etc/sysctl.conf add/edit the following at the end of the file:

fs.file-max=1000000

in /etc/security/limits.conf add/edit the following:

* soft nofile 1000000
* hard nofile 1000000

As for your transfering issue...I had it happen once.

Be sure you have tributedownloads enabled and the -notransferfromfiltering option on.

Make sure all the maps have the same cluster name and aren't sharing ports.

If using these options make sure they arent set to true

?PreventDownloadSurvivors=False
?PreventDownloadItems=False
?PreventDownloadDinos=False
?PreventUploadSurvivors=False
?PreventUploadItems=False
?PreventUploadDinos=False

Sounds to me like your server is not allowing your character to download/upload for one reason or another.

If you have seperate configs for your different maps, double check your symlinks and if you are running a windows server keep in mind symlinks are not as reliable due to the way the file system works, however, I think there was a new option to specify the folder for each map added.

Here are my bash scripts. Edited to remove private infos. :)

The backup script will require the folders Scorched, Island, center to already be made in the users documents folder as well as Saved and Savedbk in those folders....even if empty

User should be the linux username that the server is installed on, Passwords are all removed, "cluster" name has been changed, and the user password for steamcmd...user can be changed to anonymous.

The difference between & and && is huge. One tells the previous command to go on as a background process the other tells it that it has to wait till the previous command is finished. For example "command1 & sleep 3m && command2" makes it so command1 goes to the background but command2 cannot start until sleep is completed. Yah, it adds to start time, but auto managed mods is worth it.

This also makes it possible to set up the server to only accept commands...no packets...aka major DDOS protection...hard to DDOS something that won't respond to a ping or telnet. :)

There are lots of instructions out there for installing steamcmd to install the ark server files. My particular favorite for destructions are here:

Enjoy!

Official mod updater Linux install instructions. If using CrossARK you will need seperate configs for the map that controls the mods. As shared above. This is so only one map loads the mods and this prevents threading issues (ie. SteamCMD choking on more then one instance at at time - same reason updates and validation is done one at a time in the previous example). Just add the sleep timer to allow the mods to get downloaded, updated and installed between the first map loaded and the rest.

If you are one of the lucky ones you can skip the install instructions

Lucky ones have SteamCMDInstall.sh located inside the ServersRoot folder (just before ShooterGame). Just run that and the first 4 steps can be skipped. ./SteamCMDInstall.sh

Remember to always make a backup of your save folder before doing any major changes to your server! Also, mods will still need to be loaded via the GUS.ini ActiveMods= or the command line as always. The only thing being added is the mods to download, install and/or update when server starts.

1) Create folder "ServerRoot"/Engine/Binaries/ThirdParty/SteamCMD/Linux
In my case "ServerRoot" is arkdedicated. If you are on host the Engine folder is located in the same folder as the ShooterGame folder. Not all hosts give access to this folder.

2) Download SteamCMD tar ball file
https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/client/installer/steamcmd_linux.tar.gz

3) Upload the tar ball to the SteamCMD/Linux folder that you just created

4) Extract steamcmd_linux.tar.gz in the Linux folder.

5) Add your mods listed in numerical order (it is important they are in numerical order) to the end of your Game.ini (located ShooterGame/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/) like so.

[ModInstaller]
ModIDS=Modid1
ModIDS=Modid2
ModIDS=Modid3
ModIDS=Modid4
ModIDS=Modid5
ModIDS=Modid6
etc

6) Add this to the end of your command line without the quotes "-automanagemods"

It will autorun every time the server is started and check for updates of the mods in the Game.ini as long as the mods are in numerical order and -automanagemods is at the end of the command line. There might still be bugs, but this one is at least supported by wildcard.

Side Note: On first start it will download all of the mods fresh.

For those with physical access or ssh to the servers steps 1-4 can be replaced with these four commands. From serverroot folder...same folder that the ShooterGame folder is located in.

mkdir Engine/Binaries/ThirdParty/SteamCMD/Linux
cd Engine/Binaires/ThirdParty/SteamCMD/Linux
wget https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/client/installer/steamcmd_linux.tar.gz
tar -xvzf steamcmd_linux.tar.gz

Troubleshooting:
If a mod becomes corrupt
1) Stop the server and wait ~3mins
2) Delete the entire workshop folder located at
Engine/Binaries/ThirdParty/SteamCMD/Linux/steamapps/Workshop
3) Also Delete the everything in the Mods folder except 111111111 and TheCenter folders and file.
4) Start the server back up. It will redownload all of the mod content fresh.
This should be done regularly anyway.

Hope that covers all of it now for all of you asking questions on how to do CrossARK now on Linux Servers :)

Want to also say that even with the upload limits at 5mb the buffer overflow issue is still happening, just seems it doesnt happen everytime.

Any word from devs on this problem? It is causing items to be lost. Cooked Meat and Canteens are the most common things lost.

1. it seems that password-protected servers do not allow an instant character transition between the servers - upon entering the pass and clicking 'accept' nothing happens. However, the char transfer does happen - you just have to log off and log on on the destination server via usual means and your char will be there.

Looks like this 'enter the password' window is breaking the things down. Why do we actually have to re-enter the password when we are traveling from the server where we had already typed the pass?

This info should be spread like wildfire. I can confirm it is indeed the password input that is 'breaking' the seamless transition from one Ark to the other. I tried for 2 days getting my servers to behave, but this morning I decided screw it, removed the server password and now I can transition from TheCenter -> Scorched Earth -> TheCenter with zero issues.

I'm not too worried about having a password on my servers; it's unlikely someone will join and we have tools to counter unwanted guests, but, I would like to reenable it just because I like to stay in the habit of practicing secure environments. No offense intended, but something like this should've been addressed already. Not sure how the Server Hosts are getting around this password issue?

Please fix Wildcard!

ps -the whole Cross-ARK server setup could be a bit more intuitive. I know it's a 'power user' thing, but still; cool computer stuffs does not mean it has to be convoluted.

So, i'm kind of getting annoyed here with the lack of information for those of us who are running dedicated Xbox One servers using the Default The Island Map, and how this SE <> Default/Center transfers work with Unofficial dedicated servers.

I would very much like a proper answer here @Jeremy Stieglitz

As you know, we (Xbox One server owners) had to buy a 2nd Xbox One in order to set up a dedicated unofficial ARK server if we want to play on it. What i've gathered so far is that if we want to get stuff from SE into our dedicated servers, we have to buy yet another Xbox One to act as a 2nd server in a "cluster"? Is that correct? Because with the lack of information for the Xbox One community, it is highly unclear what we have to do for the Xbox One in order to transfer stuff between worlds.

I tried going into Single Player as well as Non-Dedicated to play around in SE, and then i decided i wanted to transfer a couple creatures and my character from that SE session, on to my dedicated server.

I uploaded everything i wanted transferred to the Obelisk.

Logged on to my dedicated server which is running the default The Island map.

Killed off my original character, made it to the spawn selection screen and selected Download Survivor etc, but nothing. No survivor available to download.

Respawned my original character and went to the nearby obelisk, which was the  same color as the one i had used on SE in Single player/Non-dedicated, but no creature data was in it.

So, i implore you, @Jeremy Stieglitz to provide us Xbox One server owners with a proper reply and solid information on how to do this, and if we can't, a reason as to why.

Thanks.

Any answers forthcoming?

Basically, it took them over 2 months to reply..

Xbox Server owners will never be able to use SE in tandem with The Island/The Center. It "might" be available when Xbox Play anywhere releases.

They advertised it, saying everyone would be able to transfer from the default map to the scorched earth and back. Basically saying that everyone would be able to use the transfer option.

I watched the advertisement, and bought two copies of Scorched Earth, thinking it'd be cool to do this for my server community, based off of what the advertisement video told me, only to find out that it doesn't work for player dedicated Xbox One servers, as apparently, you need a server cluster i.e multiple servers, and that only works for the PC version, or the official Xbox One servers.

So i'll have to set up yet another server on my PC (I'll be damned if i buy  3rd freaking Xbox One to set up a server for a DLC pack!) once Xbox Play anywhere is released, and even then, it's not guaranteed that it'll work.

My opinion is that it's a gigantic scam on the Xbox server owners behalf.

Hello.

First I don't own XB1, but do have my own PC servers with cross ARK capabilities, so here are my findings, and hope they relate to your situation.

Single player mode is isolated from any official / unofficial dedicated servers. The character progress and item collection or deposits into a drop/obelisk performed in single player would not be visible anywhere else. The reason would be, as a single player (offline mode) you have full admin/god/spawn anything capabilities, and can not use those items in an environment where other players are at a disadvantage.

Now if you are on unofficial dedicated server (online to the world) AND have admin rights you could spawn in creatures, gear (as in single player), but as for BX1 cluster and cross ARK character/item transfer, I can't comment.

But what I CAN say re character transfer (on PC) is this; on any server that you've been on, and want to 'import another character' from another ARK then FIRST;

As an example... If you have a developed character on TheIsland (level 50), take it to a drop/obelisk, and upload the character profile (for saving and use later, on any connected "clustered" ARK). Next go to the ScorchedEarth server and then upload that character (level 10) at the drop/obelisk (note, transfer your items and armour first or it will be dropped like a death bag). If the two servers are on the SAME CLUSTER (eg. Cluster ID = TW34M for TheIsland and Cluster ID = TW34M for ScorchedEarth) then you can grab the character/items on the other server.

NEVER EVER EVER ...... just kill yourself and download a saved character (with exception below)

If you are running around TheIsland with your level 50, and drown just to access the spawn character at bed location / download saved survivor, then choose to download that ScorchedEarth level 10 character, you will have just deleted/overwritten (no access ever again) the Island character.

ALWAYS upload you the "Going To Map" character before attempting to bring a different character you've previously upload from another (same Cluster ID) map.

The exception is, if you are scouting a new server with a level 1 Bob/Jane, then decide you want to go there. Then who cares about a lost Bob.

---------

IF somewhere in the XB1 settings for dedicated server setup, there is a Cluster ID option, pick a unique ID number, and use it for all YOUR personally administered servers, then it "should work", Also the servers in the cluster also need to be running, so the data can be pulled from the source server.

If you were to use the Cluster ID I showed earlier (TW34M) then my servers would be accessible in addition to yours for cross ARK travel/transfer.
So make your Cluster ID unique and private. Now if you know someone that ALSO runs a permanent dedicated server, you could do the ScorchedEarth server, provide them the Cluster ID and they use it on their TheIsland dedicated server, and then you can both admin your server, and have cross ARK travel (possibly, as I can't test or confirm that would work on XB1), and may save the additional price of another XB1 console.

I hope this helped (from a clustered servers PC Admin).
Heart this if you feel it helped, or explained the right way to do it.

Now I am sure this question has come up a million times. But will there EVER be an update regarding the generator in sync with the wind turbine? I don't care that the generator degrades. It's what makes scorched, scorched. But if you do implement the idea of having the turbine and generator operate in series, turning the generator on when the turbine turns off, PLEASE implement the generator to turn off when the turbine turns back on?

I'm not someone from IT, but as I do get process control at school, it can't be that hard to implement the IF; THEN on the generator right? Please. It renders the turrets, fridges and other items anywhere outside the 100% wind areas completely useless.

Has anything new come of this yet? I'd love to get my cross ark cluster working, but not at the cost of losing my password security.

Is scorched earth worth buying?I mean it costs more than the game on g2a...

Yes, it's worth it.

Don't buy from g2a. They're a shady dealer; they don't sell keys themselves, you buy from other users much like ebay. But when something goes wrong, g2a will not back you. On top of that, the devs won't get any of your payment for whatever you buy on g2a.

Basically, if you plan on buying from g2a, you might as well pirate the game.

Sure but it costs like 10 euros more on steam....
