Hello Survivors,

Welcome to your latest edition of the Community Crunch!

ARK at PAX West

As we approach closer to PAX West, The ARK Team would like to remind you that the #PAXRex and its new gigantic friend will be making their appearance on September the 2nd at the Washington State Convention Center! 

We’ve got something very special planned and cannot wait to share it with you, of course the event will be streamed live from the booth on www.twitch.tv/survivetheark where the mysteries will begin to unravel! This will be something that no Survivor will want to miss ;).

This is an award given to Survivors to celebrate the amazing structures you build. These bases are judged based upon a number of different factors such as their creativity, uniqueness, how fun of a base it is, the difficulty of building it, the functionality it provides and much more!

ARK Digest and Workshop Spotlight!

It’s still not here yet! Sorry guys, but we’re hoping to actually post a digest later this weekend or early next! The reason for the delay is due to focus on some development work but it’ll be back soon :). However… we did have a bit of a surprising entry in our Community Crunch! Normally Cedric runs through the workshop spotlight but he’s been occupied with a major Primitive+ patch, as well as PAX Preparations - however community Modder Tao stopped by to let us know about the mod they’re working on! Hopefully down the road we can speak to you directly and get a fuller showcase going, but here’s what he has to say:

ARK: Survival Plus

ARK: Survival Plus aims to bring a more immersive survival experience to the game. To achieve this the mod adds hundreds of new items, new crafting structures and a more in-depth crafting system that utilises amongst others tools, world-based crafting, clay shaping, glass blowing and intermediate crafting components. In addition the player faces new challenges - instead of just eating the player needs to take care to get enough of various nutrients, the elements are harder to endure, fights can result in wounds that need to be treated, and finally the Dino AI is getting a large overhaul. Animals behave smarter in general, and one by one animals get special behaviours - from mound-building Titanomyrma to Pelagornis that steel the player’s food. Dino taming is also being reworked - many creatures are rendered untameable to make survival more challenging. The remaining creatures currently have to be tamed with peaceful methods and entirely custom taming methods are a work in progress.

The mod is a joint project of myself (aka Tao) and Hamildor. Hamildor is doing the more complex 3D art and the balancing while I work on the actual modding, game play design and texturing.

Here are some images showing models that both Hamildor and I created as well as some of our custom Dino AI changes - Ants building hills and defending their territory, Pelagornis stealing food from campfires, cooking pots and food storage and bait that allows players to distract carnivores.

Atleast I hope it's some major (late game) content. I think moments like this (since it has been a while since the last "big" patch) will decide for a lot of people if they will continue playing or will take a break (and the same goes for me).

Oooh thanks, surprised to wake up and see the Crunch done! If only the top could rotate like that restaurant in the Simpsons lol, yes food is life!

Also @Jat - Thanks for the official clarification in the entry thread on the whole topic of delays, due dates, and methodology behind the process of time allocation and posting. That removes a lot of stress as someone who stresses over rules and the way someone else may feel compared to how I do are totally different. It is no mystery that I was the one having the discussion with Ranger about the deadline topic and expressed my concern as well as the coincedences of general theme and mod use between our builds. I am a bit protective over my ideas more so now as I am running very thin and won't have too much more I can offer up, I have 2 more ideas now then I can't think of anything else and feel like my ideas are starting to clash and be repetitive. Definitely admit to being very high maintenance here, there is a certain level that I set upon myself personally as to what I am willing to present on my Youtube and with my name, it is hard for me to be satisfied and happy with what I create. I am also very heavily tied to business and the methods, organization, and very strict with rules so your official word clears it up. I had wanted to add more to the build with some rather and separate additions after seeing the delay but was afraid it would seem unfair to others that had entered before the typical expected deadline.

 

In an interesting and major change for the next creation for anyone that reads this, the next creation will be done on an Official PVP server at request of a tribe that really wants one of my creations in their environment. I will not be revealing which server till it is complete but when it is, people can get an in person experience and the access spot is pretty easy to reach. The design will be tuned for a PVP environment so I have to use metal and I am not sure how I feel about the aesthetic appeal of metal and its paintability.  (I obviously won't have mods so it won't be as fancy as usual with all the special lights and flowers and whatnot, but I will try my best with what is in the default kit.) It will be big though, 23x20x5+ watchtowers :3 So hopefully that is something people will look forward to for those who expressed their interest in my style of building. My hint is: The initials are APD :3

It will be very much outside my comfort zone so I am quite nervous of the end result and it meeting my personal high expectations. If it doesn't I'll create a duplicate with mods as a "definitive edition" for a 2nd entry down the road.

Don't let that hold you back MissMimi, these contests are judged on a wide variety of criteria.  Builds that don't use mods but are extremely well done are considered even more challenging than a similar one done with them.  Besides, the point is to have fun and show off creativity... so go for it!

There were many excellent entries this time around, and the Survival Plus spotlight in particular caught my interest when he mentioned new detailed and individualized creature behaviors.  

Thanks again for hosting the contest and undertaking what must have been a particularly challenging judging process this time around.

It's due for release on Xbox One on 1st Sept. So i'd say it coming along very well.

Building an octagon house would be pretty difficult, although i'm not sure if it is completely impossible with the current building blocks. It could work with ramps and roofs for the sloped parts, except for the sloped side walls. Not sure why you'd want an octagon house though.

The what? If you meant an octagon shaped house as GP said, that's pretty easy. 

Fence foundations and gates snap in 45' angles and that makes an octagon, right?

This is some strange info considering.  It was dated to be released the same day as pc.  But this info you show me was "posted December 2015."  Before mods where announced to come as official parts of the game.  Please correct me if I am wrong but I see these things than repeat them.  No disrespect intended but I have no idea who you are but I am calling for devs to answer a few questions that is all.  Like along the lines of will the problem with cave dinos not spawning in on singleplayer be fixed before or after the full release or will it not be fixed at all.  This is XBOX ONE after all, I have not yet tested the problem on pc singleplayer.  I have never seen this info before though I have looked for any info I could find about it as I look forward to Primitive Plus greatly.  But please elaborate on how this information is dated Dec. 16, 2015.  A date that is before the mods program ever announced Primitive Plus as coming to official mods program.  I understand that they are hard at work and this is as far as I am concerned, the greatest game to come out since Skyrim.  I just ask for a few words to be said on situations that are a concern.  I am glad they have acknowledged the pillar and foundation situation on PvE worlds after many of us took on the community forums about it.  With all due respect what they did is really all they could do but it still doesn't work well enough.
