The article doesn't say the game is on hold. It clearly states they are working on it, but not with the full studio resources, as most are working on ASA. A vertical slice in the game industry is a near-finished core set of game mechanics without most of the content and world-building complete, enough of a game finished such that the mechanics and overall feel of the game could be demonstrated. 

"A small portion of our team continues to refine the mechanics of [Ark 2's] combat". Reading through the lines, "Soulslike combat (in a multiplayer PvP setting) is hard and we haven't cracked that nut yet". 

They need the revenue from ASA to continue to keep the studio open while they work on Ark 2's release for the next cash infusion.

Fans will have to wait for the next official statement for clarity and more timely information.

The article talks about the PvP combat system, but I wanted to ask if that combat system is also designed for using a firearm and if it's also designed for fighting dinosaurs? Once it becomes similar to Monster Hunter, can you then fight the creatures with swords, bows, and similar firearms?
