Graceful yet powerful, the Megalanhydris is an ancient semi-aquatic mammal from the Pleistocene era, believed to be a distant relative of modern otters.
However, this majestic creature has evolved into something far beyond its ancestors — a colossal apex hunter that dominates both river and frost alike.
Despite its intimidating size, its temperament is generally protective rather than predatory — but make no mistake: the Megalanhydris is highly territorial.
It will always defend its territory aggressively, especially when approached by other carnivores, regardless of whether it is hunting or not.
Those who manage to earn its trust gain one of the most loyal and adaptable companions in ARK, a guardian of both ice and water, feared and respected by all who cross its path.
Overview
Emerging from the frozen depths and icy rivers, the Megalenhydris is a formidable semi-aquatic predator measuring 8 to 9 meters in length.
Found in the snow biome of Genesis Part 1 and the cold waters of other maps, this apex carnivore dominates both land and water alike.
Saddles
2. Standard Saddle (Unlocked at Level 27)
A durable saddle designed for both land and underwater use, offering strong protection and moderate insulation.
1. Tek Saddle (Unlocked at Level 78)
A high–technology saddle that provides unlimited oxygen to the rider and immunity to extreme effects such as radiation, venom, and fire.
It enhances the Megalanhydris’s adaptability for deep–sea and hazardous–zone exploration.
Passive Abilities
Thick Fur Resistance: Provides the rider and itself with natural hypothermic and hyperthermic protection.
Enhanced Fisher: Deals increased damage to fish and has a higher chance of obtaining Prime Fish Meat.
Aquatic Harvester: Gains a 25% weight reduction on any typeof pearls, and collects 15% more pearls than usual when harvesting
Infinite Oxigen: He has no oxygen stat.
Active Abilities
Bite Attack – A heavy bite using its fangs that deals significant damage but at a slower rate.
Has a 15% chance to inflict Bleed, dealing 5% of the target’s remaining health over 15 seconds.
Multiple applications refresh the timer and stack the damage up to 25% of remaining health.
Claw Strike / Tail Whip (Underwater) –
On land, it delivers rapid claw slashes with lower damage but higher attack speed.
Underwater, this attack becomes a tail whip that knocks enemies back but does not cause bleeding.
Grab and Carry – By holding its bite, the Megalanhydris can grab smaller creatures (up to the size of a Direwolf), alive or dead, and attack them while holding.
Curl Up (Menu Ability) – Activated from the creature’s radial menu.
When curled up, the Megalanhydris enters a defensive, resting position.
If near an egg: Incubates it.
If near a player or allied creature: Grants rapid health and stamina regeneration and greatly boosts temperature resistance for both.
5. Hunting Mode: When activated, Megalanhydris enters a focused state designed for stealth and ambush. Its movement speed is reduced, but it becomes significantly harder to detect by wild creatures and players.
6. Predatory Leap: While in Hunting Mode, Megalanhydris can perform a specialized leap attack that changes depending on the target and where you aim:
Head Strike (Large Creatures): Aiming at the head causes Megalanhydris to collide head-on, stunning and disorienting the target for 10 seconds while inflicting light torpor.
Body Strike (Large/Medium Creatures): Aiming at the body inflicts a powerful bleeding effect that drains 25% of the target’s remaining health over time.
Takedown (Small Creatures & Players): Pouncing on smaller targets knocks them down and pins them to the ground, similar to a Thylacoleo’s ambush, and can even dismount riders if aimed precisely.
Movement and Mobility:
The Megalanhydris is an agile predator despite its size, capable of rotating smoothly on its own axis to face threats or reposition quickly. It can perform long, low jumps that allow it to cover ground efficiently, though it isn’t built for high leaps. In water, it becomes even more impressive — a swift and graceful swimmer, able to outpace most creatures of similar size.
Taming Method: “Challenge of the Hunt”
Taming a Megalanhydris requires strategy and subtlety. You must bring one or more tamed Otters — the more, the better — and approach undetected.
Once close enough, a “Socialize” option appears for your Otters. Activating it begins a three-round fishing challenge against the Megalanhydris.
You must command your Otters to catch the marked Coelacanths in the area while the Megalanhydris hunts its own.
Each fish grants points depending on size. At the end of each round, your total points are compared to the Megalanhydris’.
Reaching the target score (based on the creature’s level) tames it successfully.
Failing the challenge or bringing other creatures besides Otters will anger the Megalanhydris, causing it to attack.
The taming process only works near water.
I hope you’ve enjoyed discovering the Megalanhydris, a creature that embodies both the strength of the frozen wilderness and the adaptability of the water’s depths.
If you liked this concept, I’d truly appreciate your support and votes to help bring this mighty guardian of ice and water to life in ARK: Survival Ascended!
Thank you for reading — and may your hunts be cold, precise, and full of prime fish!
