Microsoft Chat Censor...

Grognak

Suggestion

Guys, this is plum ridiculous....

Yall have got to tone this thing down, I can't even type items that are IN GAME into filter boxes to make quick inventory adjustments....

I cant type "the" or LOL... even "Code of Conduct" is censored...

Cant type COOKED MEAT or even capitalize vault names like "Fiber" or "Thatch" and most other common and completely PG and PC words...

We need a way to disable it per player, make it default at log in... IDC, but allow us to disable it completely, once in game...

Something has got to give on this...

There have been a few topics around chat censoring odd letter combinations such as TH HO PO and this is something I'm experiencing as a Windows PC client user. I think this may effect some Xbox users as well. I have seen a suggestion that this is down to the Xbox Live settings somehow effecting Ark's in game chat engine but, that makes no sense. Especially as I can chat just fine in the Xbox app, I can say poop and everything! I've reported this as a bug so it's on Wildcard's radar ;) but I'm wondering how many people this actually effects and on what platform? What's interesting is that Steam Users see all, even languages with pictural characters apparently.

Even though I do not play ASA, I have been hearing about how broken the chat filter system is. It is completely unnecessary (ESRB does not rate online interactions) and filters out simple words like "the", or, for that matter, any word that contains "th" or even some in-game item names ("lamp", "fab", and "ele" are censored?). More information can be found in the link below:

The chat filter is game breaking.

(I am not sure if this counts as a bug or suggestion, maybe a combination of both, but if this gets blocked, I'll make it into a bug report)

Like the title says.  There are already lots of bug reports about it.  Win10/xbox have the ridiculous censorship where you cant type the word The, lol, or any myriad of 2 letter combinations or you are met with ***********.   and if you manage to get a whole sentence in chat, but as a habit put lol in it, then your entire message is ****************************************************

I can't search engrams as 95% of them have multiple 2 letter combinations that flags it for censorship.  you can't search for things in storage, or in crafting benches for the same reason.  you have to hope you can get at least 2-3 letters not censored within the name and then pick from the multitudes of things with those 2-3 letters in it to find what you need.  It is ridiculous.  Again, there are already a ton of bug reports on it.  We have reached out to both Xbox and Microsoft and are told it is the developers who implemented the system, but when we ask and request it to be fixed over the last 6 months we get nothing.

Give us a filter option or just remove it because it is too heavy handed.

Devman, I'm fairly new to Ark, and I have many complaints already, because I truly WANT to like the game. The concept seems very cool, the execution....well, I guess it could be worse.  Unless we're talking about the chat filter of course....

Note: Devman, it is very important that you understand how much I mean every single word of the following.....

FIX YOUR CHAT FILTER NOW!!! LIKE RIGHT NOW!!!  This is INSANE. Surely this had to go through some sort of QA before being released, right? Fire whoever was tasked with ensuring that the filter wasn't 💩. Heck, you might even be able to sue them for damages it's that bad. I have never, EVER, even remotely seen such a horrid filter in anything, be it game, or website, or anything. You have without a shadow of a doubt set a record for worst chat filter. Now, I understand that you're very proud of your accomplishment, but let's not forget what the goal is here. MONEY! You want money, right? I'm quite certain that you do based on the price of your DLC's. Now, what if I told you that your chat filter was SO BAD, that it was costing you sales? BECAUSE IT IS.  I have Ark through GamePass, but I was thinking of getting the Tall Tales DLC, because choo choo! But I'm not wasting my money on this game while I continue not being able to communicate with anyone! You really don't seem to understand WHAT A BIG F'ING DEAL THIS IS! This is not a minor bug or annoyance, this is nearly game breaking.  It blows my mind that this hasn't been fixed already. Like how can you release update after update without addressing this??? And I don't wanna hear "Its microsofts filter" because no other microsoft game does this. I would be embarrassed if my name was attached to this circus of a filter. Just take a look at the game industry. Look at all the flops released in the last couple years by big name studios that didn't listen to their customers.  Then look at the games of the few studios who did listen. Those games set records. Don't be another studio that's so out of touch with their customers that they can't see what's right in front of them.

FIX IT!

This is a Microsoft thing, not a Wildcard thing, Wildcard has no control over this at all, its Microsoft's chat safety filters, and happens locally on your own PC/Xbox, not on the server/game.

I don't know of any other XB/MS Store game that stars out phrases as innocuous as "lol", "raw", "10", or "crack". If you have the letter combination "la" in any part of your message, the entire thing gets starred out. I realize it is Microsoft's filter, but there has to be a reason it's affecting this game more than any other. In ASE you can't use certain PIN combinations because of it. WC needs to figure out either a way to bypass it or disable it or something.

And again, chat scroll doesn't work on console either. And as others have said, even getting the chatbox to come up at all is problematic on console. So it's not just filter issues.

Can pretty much guarantee that no Devs have read this. If they look at anything, it's bug reports of which this is not. To any Dev who IS reading this, prove me wrong. ;)

I didn’t want to make this because I know it’s busy here and I hoped I wouldn’t have to add to the pile.

I had assumed this would be patch long ago but it’s been a problem now since ASA launched so here I am.

I can’t speak for PlayStation as I don’t play on it, but on Xbox and windows versions of ASA, you are unable to type punctuation into signs and names.

this issue is separate from the censorship issue imposed by Microsoft because when attempted, it simply omits the punctuation whereas if flagged words appear (e.g. “could”) it erases the entire message. Punctuation is also allowed in chat messages.

we use brackets in creature names to identify ownership without having the messy personal owned tribe setting on, and we use other punctuation in signs for discord links and general sentence comprehension.

we also know that steam players have no issue applying all forms of punctuation into signs and creature names, but would appreciate not having to get another person to come round to name all our tames and write all our signs for us

It's a Microsoft thing, to solve this you need to buy the Sony box.

Partially true.

It's possible to add a censor to your account via microsoft, but whatever is going on it most likely a microsoft tool that Wildcard didn't implement correctly, as this is the only microsoft client game I've played that has this issue with my account settings.

iirc this doesn't even happen on the xbox console client, just the xbox PC client.

Like limit censoring to racial words and profanity. It’s sad asa is basically a brand new game at some point they should update the censorship the point of a remake is the remake. It censors the dumbest things randomly I’m tired of it. It’s with chat, broadcast command & Searches just like you sayed. everything you type basically like did you know it’s censoring the suicide command now. Just change that command then if you got issues. I totally agree if you recreated the game from the ground up why didn’t you treat it like a like a revamp entirely you could have improved censoring for sure. Think about it loosen up a little with it.

This game is changing big already looks 1000 times better from day 1 pretty soon Ase is gonna be ditched if it gets too good they may discontinue unofficial servers on Ase, but it’ll cause an uproar if Asa don’t look astounding and have good performance. Waiting for the new update for abbiration and fsr keep your fingers crossed. I already took vacation from 3 to 9 th of august for it. I’m super excited for it and less crashing for my poor series s friends.

Yeah for real. It's extremely bad. Sometimes it will just censor your entire paragraph it's super frustrating. I've also heard that PC players see uncensored chat, causing Xbox players to miss SO MUCH of what is being said because they don't have to type again to correct themselves (they are unaware of what was censored so have no need to retype).

Also, most of a time it's a struggle to even get the chat box to pop up to begin with! Have to fight with the map and menu popping up simultaneously to get it to stick. That's when you can actually even type anything at all, because sometimes it doesn't send your messages as well whatsoever after typing them, and you have to relog/reload the game to fix it. Extremely frustrating.

The entire chat system needs to be looked into and worked on.

Unfortunately not. The filter stars out half of what is said. Xbox, MS Store, and occasionally Steam version all have this issue. Haven't heard someone from PS or Switch report it though.

I have never seen in-game chat censored in the Steam client. Are you maybe thinking of cross-platform play, where some of the players are using PS5/XBox/MSStore?

On playstation we don't see a different icon for xbox / m$ store bought copies or steam based clients, the egregious censorship is on xbox / m$ store copies.
