[Linux] September 6th patches bricked our cluster.

We have been running a 4-map cluster on Ubuntu 20.04.5 for almost a year now. on September 6th our servers no longer displayed in the Ark Client under favorites or non-official. they do report back in the steam client showing the current build. however, when attempting to connect to them directly from the steam client we get "Attempting to join a game from invite or direct join..." then immediately "unable to Query server info for invite"

 

The top server is a hosted server that I occasionally play on, the bottom is one of our cluster servers. at the time ours stopped working on the 6th the paid server hadn't updated but we could still access it, ours however updated and were no longer able to connect. 

fast Forword 2 days and the paid for server is updated and accessible where our cluster is still not available in the session list.  

 

Nothing has changed with the internet provider, or the base server, all the firewall rules are the same, the ports are open and queable as shown in the steam server list. any guidance or theory's extremely welcome.

This is still and ongoing issue for our cluster, We've attempted the UDP+1 thing we saw from other threads, attempted putting it into the DMZ of our hardware firewall, removing the firewall, disabling the Ubuntu firewall, nothing seems to be allowing ARK the game to see the servers. Steam client can still able to see them, and launch ark as if it's working. was there any documentation on the authentication exploit fix's that might help us figure out what changed on the 6th?

From the Steam client you will not connect, I also get an error that the invitation was not found.

It is quite possible that your config is incorrectly configured and the rules for iptables. Send here the config (of course, change passwords, IP and other important data before sending) and rules for iptables regarding server ports. Did you set up a hardware firewall/router, if any, to connect to the server?

we have gone as far as hard coding our public gateway into the host for a specific server and removing all the firewalls (hardware SonicWALL, and the OS firewalls), no luck. We spun up an old test server and it was able to connect inside of our infrastructure without issue. all server, test and our main cluster are updating with out issue.

 

on our cluster we have disabled all mods, and #'ed quite a few entries but still no luck getting it to show up in the game.

full reinstall of Ubuntu, transferred over the saves and no luck still.
I also then restored a save from before we had issues, but it keeps the same version. Only replaces the building/character data.
Unfortunately the only way I can see to get an older version is by having the files. Since I didn't have any checkpoints created and I can't seem to find the files for the version we need.

Transferred all the stuff off abberation and went into ark and did "host dedicated server"
got it all working, showing up, and connected..

the update right before it all raptored up.

Make a backup save and config, and then delete it from the server folder. Then start the server with the usual command:

/path/to/ShooterGame/Binaries/Linux/ShooterGameServer Aberration_P?listen?SessionName="Aberration"?ServerAdminPassword=1234?Port=7777?QueryPort=27015?MaxPlayers=70 -server -log -gameplaylogging -servergamelog -UseBattlEye

Also, I didn’t understand much, but why does arkmanager run from under sudo? The server, even as a daemon, works fine from a simple user.

It is possible that due to running under sudo, the rights to files and folders have gone astray, which prevents the server from working normally.

First of all, thank you for replying! I am the one that has been running this server, narcosis was nice enough to reach out to multiple places for me as i've been bashing my head against the wall trying to figure this out. I appreciate you taking the time to help me out.

 

I made a backup up of the config and and save. I then deleted them entirely. I then copied the command above and ran it only changing to the path.

I then added the server to my favorites from Steam, and eventually saw it in the servers browser. I opened up ARK and tried to join, but it didn't show up at all. I tried to connect to it from steams favorites menu. ARK opens up, it says that it's attempting to directly join. It sits for a little while then eventually comes back and says "Unable to query server info for invite"

 

ARKmanager does not need to run as sudo. Everything is run under a separate user account without privileges following the guide Valve has on installing SteamCMD: https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/SteamCMD#Linux - I run this all from a Hyper-V hypervisor. I exported it to have others take a look, since I have run out of ideas. I exclusively login with the "steam" account that doesn't have the sudo privileges. 

Here's the permission to the "steam" home folder:

Linux under Hyper-V? Sir, yes, you know a lot about perversions. Here it would be easier to use the ARK server for Windows right away than to do something like that. Is NAT configured correctly in Hyper-V? Also try to open additional port 7778. BTW, do you have a server and a computer from which you are trying to enter the game are on the same network?

This is the firewall on the server box. I know that your -A INPUT -m conntrack --ctstate RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT should cover it - but I would include a -m udp --dport 7778 -j ACCEPT as well.

The bigger question is the IPtables on the actual router or hardware fire wall that does the NAT and port forward to the ark server ... That is where things will go pear shaped. You say that you booted an "old" server and that worked. Again that kinda points to routing in the www gateway - or your hardware firewall, because one internal IP (old server) works, but the other (new server) does not?

not sure this is the issue as we scrapped the iptables allowing everything in and out. as well as offloaded a server to a host in another state (different, provider, network configuration etc.) we even cloned all the the majority of the features of the older test server (that showed up in the game client) kernel, os build, ip and ports of the known working etc. we are still not able to see our cluster in the launcher. the only think we can think of is there is something on the Ubuntu version we are using that didn't like whatever the Sept 6 patch changed.  Prior to Spet 6th our cluster had been running for a year without issue.

I'll def have gulli try your recommendation though.. anything is worth a shot at this point.

Hello All,

I have finally fixed this issue and my cluster is up and running again. I wanted to update this topic so if anyone else has a similar issue it may give some ideas.

My environment:

Hypervisor: Hyper-V

OS: Ubuntu LTS 20.04 - Azure-tuned kernel per Microsoft Ubuntu VM recommendations,

Each map is a separate Ubuntu VM given processor cores, RAM, and some storage space. All networking is sharing a single 10GB port since I don't have enough ports on the host for each to have its own. There was an ubiquiti firewall, and server firewall enabled on each server.

The issue I faced:

My issue was that no one was able to connect to the server via the game port. Query port worked just fine, everyone could see the server in the steam list just fine. Once they tried to connect it'd then come back saying "Unable to query server info for invite".

The fix:

What I had to do was enable SR-IOV for the network adapter on the servers, and on the virtual switch. I don't know if this was the actual fix, or there was another underlying issue that this bypasses. I know SR-IOV allows more direct access to devices, so maybe the virtualization/software switch layer wasn't happy with an Ubuntu update or ARK update. This did happen around some exploits that Wildcard resolved, so who knows.
