Not sure if anything can be done but beyond frustrating that I had a dire bear lvl 30, 2 megatheriums over lvl 100, about 8 raptors with about 1500 health each and somehow they were annihilated by one little megatherium lvl 15

The only thing you can do is make sure you avoid them when they're enraged.

https://ark.wiki.gg/wiki/Megatherium#Dangers
"Insect Killer causes the Megatherium's damage to multiply by 250% to any target for 120 seconds (which is multiplicative with the passive 150% multiplier against bugs.). When Insect Killer is active while fighting bugs, the Megatherium's damage will be multiplied by 375%. In addition, this buff reduces all (incoming) damage by about 75%"

If it was only the damage buff you would have been ok, but the fact that they also reduce the damage being done to them makes them especially deadly. That buff lasts for 2 minutes, which as you experienced is a long time in ARK combat. To make things worse, if there were any insects that got pulled into the fight that would extend the buff some more after each insect kill.

p.s. Cowgirl raised a good point, what aggression stance were your animals set to? The levels and the hit points of your animals basically mean nothing if they were on passive.

Yeah, a crack head megatherium whacked out on bug sauce truly is a frightening thing. Granted the king of surprise will always be the thylo, but when you see a megatherium running around with an orange glow around its head, you know there isn't anything you can do to stop it untill the effect wears off
