ARK 2 suggestion. Dino Tiers Concept for ARK 2 ?

How about having Dino tiers Concept in ARK 2 ? You need a certain level & other unlock requirements to even be able to tame a higher tier creature. In this way, you can't simply tame a Rex at say level 50, this gives players more reasons to tame lesser dinos & has more RPG mechanics.

For example, for Carnivore Dinos :

  1. Small Dino: Microraptor < Velociraptor < Deinonychus < Utahraptor
  2. Medium Dino: Dilophosaurus < Ceratosaurus ~ Carnotaurus < Megalosaurus < Allosaurus
  3. Apex Dino: Daspletosaurus < Saurophaganax ~ Acrocanthosaurus < T-Rex ~= Giganotosaur ~= Carcharodontosaurus
  4. Aquatic Dino: Irritator < Baryonyx < Suchomimus < Spinosaurus

Roles they play:

  • Small Dinos = Easy to maintain, fast breed, works in pack.
  • Medium Dinos = Allrounder, can use pack buffs & specialist weapons to kill Apex.
  • Apex = expensive to maintain, needs a lot to tame/train etc. Can scare Small Dinos.
  • Aquatic = Marine mounts, great if you want to explore the sea/rivers and also on land.

There can be a system where small , medium, apex & aquatic all have their uses like say in a RTS like AOE : Mythology where Greek Hoplites are useful even after unlocking the best Mythological creatures like Chimera, Colossus.

I am sure ARK 2 can fit more dinosaur types being a next gen game.

There's merit in a role-based approach like this. However I don't agree with the whole "in order to tame a Utahraptor, you need to first tame a Microraptor etc". The way I could see there being merit in taming "lesser" dinos within their size/role is you gain a passive buff to taming the "next dino up" - so if you go straight for taming Utahraptor, you have a 0% bonus to taming Small Dinos. However if you've tamed Microraptors, Velociraptors and Deinonychus before attempting a Utahraptor tame, you have a 60% bonus (the number is arbitrary, as an example only) to taming Small Dinos.

Your examples are all carnivores though, so how would this approach affect herbivores? And what roles would they serve? The same, or herbivore-unique/specific?

i would rather have less dinosaurs but with the majority of them having a use in mid-late game instead of some only being good for the first hour of gameplay then becoming obselete

This. Once you get a Raptor, Dilos become obsolete. Once you get a Carno, Raptors become obsolete. Once you get Rexes, Carnos are obsolete and the only thing you fear are other Rexes, Gigas and soon Carcharadontosaurus. You end up culling dinos because they serve no purpose anymore.

There needs to be a reason to keep your "lesser tames" around. Like "milking" your Dilo for poison which can be made into a powerful tranquiliser/narcotic, as an example. And, so you don't need to have bases full of dinos, whatever their (secondary) use - you don't need *that* many of them for it, or perhaps (like a Gacha in ARK) the more of them in an area, the less effective they are at this (secondary) use.

I actually prefer more variety in Dinos in line with say more variety in cars & vehicles in the Grand Theft Auto (GTA) series of games.

The World looks more fleshed-out, more populated & more natural with lots of creature types. I can always play a Dino game like "The Isle" or "Path of Titans" if I want to have an ecosystem with less dino types and greater emphasis on each Dino. But from the perspective of atleast PvE, Creative & Singleplayer, and those are into Role Playing like me, I feel more Dino types & with a Tiered approach gives the game a lot more depth, a lot more things to do, a steady progression system. I would love to design a Zoo or a theme park or a "taxidermy" museum of sorts with so much diversity in Dino types.

Regarding obsolescence, that would always be there and is part of progress. Again referring to the GTA example, in GTA Vice City, the MP5 makes all other SMGs obsolete & the Minigun practically makes the entire weapon roster obsolete. but we still like to use other guns because having just 1 or 2 gun would give a monotonous experience. Similarly, once we get the fastest & best handling racing car "Cheetah" (Ferrari Testarossa lookalike), we wouldn't really use any non-racing car like a "Sentinel", "Blista" etc for a race. But one may love to use an Infernus (fastest car, but very low durability) or a Phoenix (Pontiac Firebird) for role play or personal preference.

In ARK 1, typically best Boss Army Dino on average is the Therizino or Rex. But people do use other Dinos for Army too like Allos or even Carnos. Again, More Diversity = More Freedom to choose & roleplay. Gives the game more longevity too.

All these ideas are really quite cool. I'd really like a tier system, and maybe some passive abilities for even the smaller dinos, like raptors produce feathers, dilos produce tranquilizer (like @Cailean556 said).

I would love if the same Dino can sport many variations or even sub-types with differing abilities.

Like Feathered, Non-feathered. Ex: Rex, Raptors, Pterosaurs

Sub-types (just an example):

  • Allosaurus maximus (Saurophagax) being huge 13m long, but rare, has bleed but no pack bonus. In-fact, solitary or mate boost at max. More hp,dmg. Still Weaker than Giga/Rex. Weaker bleed effect than Giga
  • Allosaurus fragillis (Allosaurus of North America) being medium 9m long, common, has bleed for only Alpha, works in pack. Less hp/dmg. Weaker bleed effect that Giga.
  • Allosaurus europeus : Smallest Allosaur variant, rather fast with good stamina, weakest bleed & hp. Due to smaller size, can venture to caves easily & too big to be aggroed by Cave critters.

Exactly why I started a dilo mutation line :D

This is exactly how worked ARK 1 at the very beginning using original Kibble system ...

Really? Please, explain! I'd love to know more. I only started playing post-rework, so I have no idea what it was like "back in the day" :D.

Good luck, and happy ARKing!

It used to be that you had to tame the small and easy dinos that would in turn allow you to make kibble to train the next 'tier' of dinos. This would continue as you worked your way up to things like a Giga and Quetz (which was a world class tame at the time before they destroyed it with the flyer nerf).

Pros: Better immersion as you felt like you were progressing, this is back when the island was the only map and there was no overseer cave. It also forced you to tame all sorts of dinos, most of which are all completely useless now.

Cons: You ended up with these huge (HUGE) dino kibble farms. Really did a number on the servers although to be honest the servers run just as bad now as they did then. Worse actually. So, meh.
