Aberrant Raptor Pounce Counter?

Just started Ab for the first time yesterday, it really looks good so far. But man those raptors. What can I do about their pounce? Cause they yoinked me off of my trike (you'd think it'd be too large for that to happen but whatever) and killed me and the trike and I couldn't use the spear even though I had it equipped at the time. So how do I survive raptor pounces, especially since they do it so much more than normal raptors, which has only happened to me once on the Island

Couple of solutions:

1) Like Wizard said, a mount they can't pull you off of. Crab or spino are popular choices.

2) Escort animals. Tame some ravagers, or anything else tough, and have them on follow when you travel around the map.

I, luckily, have not had to deal with raptor pounces on Ab, but some advice anyway. Raptors aren't exactly tanks, so must creatures can crush them in melee combat. To add on to the above ideas, a longneck and scope is a godsend against raptors. Unless there's a huge pack. Then whip out the simple pistol and headshot them a few times, and you're done. If there's only one, headshot it with a longneck. That should kill it instantly. Also, some more advice-if you only have a longneck, make up a sidearm. If you're too low level, then using a bow is possible, but difficult, as its lower range and lower accuracy make it less effective at range. A pack of ravagers could probably make quick work of a pack of raptors, like @Pipinghot said. If you can't get ravagers, a few trikes should do the job as well. just whistle them at the raptors, or shoot them to get them to come to you. Anyway, good luck and happy ARKing!

Yeah I just got my first Ravager, but need a few more. But I also just had an idea, Stegos back plates protect the rider from dismount, right? I think ought to tame one and surround it with a ravager vanguard

Following up on the topic of mounts & escort animals - dire bears. They're great for both.

They're less agile than ravagers, and if you're riding one they won't prevent you from getting dismounted, but they are pure wrecking machines, even fairly low level bears. I've played on Ab three different times and each time I've tamed 3-4 dire bears as my first combat/riding mount. If I want to scout out new areas of the map, ravagers, but if I'm going on a harvesting run or to areas that are known to me and I know the path to-and-from that area, bears.

In my opinion, it's also easier to lure dire bears into a taming pen. Wild ravagers are just so fast that it's harder to get them to follow you into a taming pen that will allow you to escape from them, whereas any pen that's 2x2 or larger is easy to lure bears into.

If you put your bear on Neutral & Follow, then when you're riding it, it will automatically come to your defense if you get dismounted. Even if you just have the single bear as your mount they will usually be able to kill your attackers before you die. And if you have two bears as escorts, well they just make mincemeat of nearly anything.

Using bears also lets you go into areas with bigger, more dangerous threats. If you have two dire bears escorting you on Follow, you can have them to attack larger animals that ravagers are not good for. A pack of three dire bears can lay waste to a spino or sarco, but you can't do that ravagers. And if a pack of wild ravagers attacks you, you're going to be happier if you have three dire bears in that fight than three tamed ravagers.

Of course this idea depends a lot on where you've build your base. If you built in an out-of-the-way location planning to use zip lines a lot then bears are no good for you. But if you've built on any part of the green zone that lets you run around over the big open areas, and if you're willing to take the longer way home because you can't use zip lines, bears are great.

As far as carrying capacity goes, they're pretty even. Ravagers get weight advantage on many materials and bears just have a large raw capacity no matter what they're carrying, so if you want to put a bunch of materials on your escort animals it ends up being about the same.

Advantages of ravagers - fast & agile, able to go over and around obstacles quickly, also able to get to other terrain levels more quickly because of zip lines.

Advantages of bears - very durable and wreck things quickly.
