Joining Failed - Connection timed out

I have run a 7 server cluster with near 100% uptime for the past 6 months. Hundreds of people connect to the cluster weekly. And I currently have it running on this machine perfectly. This is said just to give an idea of my level of knowledge.

This isn't to say I could be missing the simplest of solutions and I would be extremely happy to hear you point that out to me, you can even say I am a moron for missing something so obvious and Ill happily defer to your superiority! Just please help...

Recently I purchased a HPE DL360 Proliant rack and now have windows server 2019 running on it successfully. I installed Ark server manager, forwarded all ports I was using both UDP/TCP (I will list the range being used for all protocols).

I allowed Ark Server manager to manage the inbound/outbound firewall rules (checked these against what I have on the known working machine). I even used some ports ive used previously (I absolutely know are not being utilized) and nothing.

I have tried directly turning off my Domain, Private and Public Firewalls to troubleshoot (No good).

Summary (OS/essential hardware):

  • HPE DL360 Proliant (Fully updated in iLO firmware interface)
  • windows server 2019 (fully updated)
  • Ubiquity Edge Router 4 (Fully up to date, working perfectly)

The following ports are open on it and I have assigned the IP address connected specifically to the only open Ethernet port on my adapter.

  • 7850-7866 (I assign 1+1 to each server)
  • 27100-27110 (I assign one to each server)
  • 32400-32410 (I assign one to each server)
  • The router has Hairpin NAT enabled (Reflection) so I can connect as if externally.

In windows server 2019 I allowed ASM to manage the inbound/outbound rules. I compared the setting side by side in a remote connection to ensure they were exactly the same (Minus different ports).

The servers I created all publish properly, they show up on the wildcard server list and I can add them separately as favorites in the steam server search. Every attempt by me, or anyone else on my cluster results in "Joining Failed - Connection Timeout".

If I try to connect through steam server list: Same (Though it gives me an accept/cancel option during the attempt to connect directly).

When the server boots up this is what is output:

In the Servers specific CMD window it shows absolutely no sign of a connection ever having been attempted.

Three observations...

1. Tracert from my PC (in the UK) to your IP (74.67.185.152) fails 😞

C:\WINDOWS\system32>tracert 74.67.185.152

Tracing route to cpe-74-67-185-152.rochester.res.rr.com [74.67.185.152]

Trace complete.

2. BattleMetrics thinks you're using a different port range to what you list above. 7779 for Ragnarok ?
https://www.battlemetrics.com/servers/search?q=Rochester NY&sort=score

3. A seperate thought, but "C:\Program Files" isn't a good place for the cluster directory.  I'd recommend creating a new directory C:\ArkServer or similar.  Ark might need to run as administrator to be able to write into C:\Program Files

First of all, awesome. Thanks a lot for doing so much!

1 & 2.) The trace you did was to my IP, but the servers you're seeing are actually a cluster that is up and functional. That's why Battlemetrics reports I have a server at 7779. (He actually have a few UK players on it...well Scotland and UK).

3.) I took the server down to attempt to install windows 10 and see if its server 2019 thats giving me the problems. When I get it back up I will do as you say with the directory and see if it makes a difference for sure.

Its very odd to me that the servers post to wildcard or whatever, can be sort of connected to, but time out. It seems like one setting, or one service not configured properly, on windows 2019 that's in the way....

If anyone has any clue just ask and ill post screenshots of whatever. I really appreciate the help Larksfield!
