how to not die by the thylacoleo?

Recommended Posts

anyway to avoid getting jumped by an acrobatic cat hiding in a tree 200 feet into the air while riding on the back of a bird then proceeding to die due to monsters camping my stuff as i attempted to get it back 15 to 20 times and finally cheating to attain it after sitting annoyed, contemplating my choices on why i got this game?

Try putting some points into melee, gaining good armor (one easy way is to milk gachas which will give you a un-ending source of riot), and get a good melee weapon (also can get from gachas). Also put your mount on attacking my target, and bring an escort mount so all three of you can just pon anything, but be aware your pike will hit your own tames... friendly fire in this game is wack.

There are only two altitudes to use in the Redwoods -- above the trees or just above the ground. If you're just above the ground the Thyla might still get you, but you won't take much fall damage. Once you're on the ground, a good shotgun will make short work of a Thyla.

Later in the game, a good Tek suit will negate the fall damage and give you enough armor that you won't need to worry.

And, as always, it pays to plan ahead for your death.

3 choices....first, avoid the redwoods by flying over it, around it, or just not going to it.
2. Metal armor or mastercraft grade chittin, 100 med brews, shotty
1. super flock of angry argies and med brews

And what monsters you talkin bout?

I used to hunt them by being a bait, riding on rex in flak armor.

Once he jump on you is a mater  to survive  one or two tyla hits before your tame kill it.

Well after i got giga same hunt was a lot easier as giga kill it faster.

And you get a lot of keratin and tyla trofie needed to summon a boss.

I tried to tame  it too but with no success on island ( always some other mob to attack me or unconscious tyla, always too close to someone enemy structure etc.

Well i found best way to tame  it on SE as you can see it from far, but decent level tyla need ages to tame it.

I always fly near the world barrier above the redwoods to avoid getting thyla'd.

If flying in redwood and you get thyla'd, keep a nice shotgun with you. I have a 200% dmg pump shotgun and it does the job killing the thyla.

Also while flying near redwood, keep your bird on neutral and follow so if you get thyla'd it'll come and help you.

It really is just a matter of being (extra) careful, but there are multiple strategies for coping with them.

There are two basic strategies: either fly very slowly and look around a lot or fly as fast as you can and make sure you don't have to stop until you get all the way through the redwoods. If you are using speed boost when you fly there is a chance they will miss you and fall harmlessly to the ground.

It's also worth knowing that thyla's all climb up the same distance from the ground when they're in the trees. If you're flying through a flat area it's easy to fly just above the height where they hide, or if you're flying through an area with sloped ground then pay attention to how high you are above the forest floor. Paying attention to your height above the ground at all times will make big difference.

If you're in the woods on purpose because you're trying to accomplish something inside the redwoods...

1) Only fly a little bit at time and then keep scanning all around you in circles looking for them hiding on trees.

2) When you see one, fly up until you're above it and attack it from just above, this will almost always knock them to the ground/make them jump. If you're on an Official server you have to be very careful with this because the frequent lag can put you beneath the thyla if you're not careful, then you suddenly find yourself being tackled down to the ground. Also, this is easier and more effective on an argy than a ptera since the argy can hover above it and do a claw attack. Once you get used to practicing awareness and looking for them, you can easily fly around the redwoods for long periods of time without getting killed.

3) As others have said, if you equip a shotgun before you get on your mount and fly close to the ground, you won't take much damage when you get knocked off and you will already have your shotgun equipped to blast it in the face. Just make sure you're flying just high enough that your flying mount will hover up in the air and will be safe from being attacked by the thyla if it kills you.

4) If you're flying in the redwoods and you suddenly realize that you're not paying attention, whatever you do do not suddenly stop and look around. I can assure you that far too often this will be the exact moment when you stop underneath a thyla and it will get you. Letting your mind wander is the perfect way to get killed. Instead, immediately fly straight up until you're above them, then start paying attention again and drop back down some so you can find them.

Another thing is to know where they spawn. They are more common on the east and west ends, but they do occasionally show up in the middle, but if you fly to the highest peak (and btw you can skim the tree tops, you don't need to fly at the map border) there is a lot of bare ground on that metal mountain, where you can easily look around and see there isn't one, and get that metal in relative peace.

Does that stop them from spawning?

That's what I hoped when I did this, but one day I saw one at a tree above my platform. So the answer is no.

But it's possible to make more than one platform at a tree in different heights. Should be possible to "cage" them between platforms in different heights.

Anyway, I was never attacked while having my special corridor, maybe not perfect but decreases their ambushs.

Dude, thats a cleaver idea! Find a tree they spawn on, put a floor on the bottom, then run it to the top of the tree, put in glass walls from top to bottem, then check it every so often to see if you "caught" one!
