The troodon doesnt server a purpose as tame

Been playing around with the troodon in single player. If I had to guess i'd say the troodon was a first-attempt at radar mechanics. What was learned from the troodon help with implementation of the parasaur radar (which might be a bit too op).

In any case the parasaur radar is 100% better in every way;

  • better radius,
  • always on (can comb the map with an argy and find buried purlovia caches),
  • passive turret mode.
  • clearer to see the symbol (with the troodon you have to be looking AT the troodon and do a little circle around it to get the vision)
  • being able to see "threats" both wild and player allows you to locate player bases 95% of the time. (searching for a Cache or Dead Body with the troodon doesnt really give you an edge)
  • The troodon can either search for players & tames OR wild dinos.
  • The vision indicators only last a couple seconds and 60 sec cooldown.
  • You have to spend levelup points to upgrade the radar range and cooldown. Leaves the troodon with poopty stats.

And if you just think of it like an attack dino;

  • There are only a handful of dinos that fit this role and it has to do with their mobility and survivability; hyaenas, kentrosaurus, dimorphs.
  • Has a pack bonus at night, but because its a land-follow animal its VERY hard to get them anywhere useful. Dimorphs can follow you because they can fly, kentros are a defense tool, hyaenas can be good in caves because they can go and go with their rapid heals.
    • Its actually the same problem with Dilos; are they for attacking people? Defending your base? The acid spit never hits and they die super easy.
  • If you leveled radar they have poopty stats and die easy. And are a very difficult tame.
  • Basically only good at attacking humans on foot. Any other animal has too high stamina for the stamina drain to be noticeable, and nothing really gets KOd in a pvp fight except humans. Any other tame and wreck these things. So when do you ever have the opportunity to attack humans on foot with these things? At a base tames, turrets and doors will defeat these things. I guess they can pass through doors. But you would have to walk them overland past hostile land dinos to get there.

So what are they? Creatures that are meant to be sent inside a base through the door to wreak havoc at night as a pack? Scouts with radar where you only really need 1 you should be able to carry with you?

The work great as a PVE enemy. They should just do something useful as a tame.

You seem to have the idea that you need to level it's radar/detection abilities and use it as a defense tame. The realistic option is that you wouldn't use a single troodon for both tasks. In PvP They are can be extremely effective in the right situations, bred troodons in cave entrances or crouch points can KO enemies on foot in a few bites, even when the enemy has good flak. With proper bred stats and leveling movement speed, a pack of aggressive troodons can be extremely annoying to deal with, and not overly easy to kill since you'll drop from their attacks very quickly.

As far as moving them I'm not sure why you think you'd need to walk them somewhere when cryo's exist and literally even a ptera can carry them.

As for radar while the parasaur is generally the better option there are certain situations where a troodon can outperform the parasaur. With investing a lot of points into range you can detect significantly further which can be useful in trying to investigate some base locations and you also have the advantage of not alerting anyone who is detected by the troodon. Flying around parasaur scouting will draw some attention if someone is online, with troodon they dont need to know that you were poking around
