How to start

Wait how do you have to start all over but also just join? This confuses me.

I'll just tell you my tribe's strategy when we're starting out on a map in PvE. If you're PvP then never mind that's a different rabbit hole.

1. Initial base building is important for security and having a safe respawn point. You usually start on the beach and you're welcome to stay and build there but we prefer our bases to be a little more hidden and harder to access so we try to find cliffs further inland that are more defendable and we won't need as many dino gates early. Later once we're established we have fliers and can search for a more permanent spot to build.

2. F**k building in thatch. Almost everything can damage thatch and it decays faster than anything. Take the time to grind and build it out of stone if you can but building in wood is fine in a pinch. Metal tools help immensely when you unlock them. Ceilings aren't that important unless there's hostile fliers in the area so focus on getting your foundations made of stone asap, then the walls, then the ceilings. Once the basic structure is secure in stone then get stone dino gates up around it so you have a secure yard for your dinos.

3. Our initial tames start like this: Small/Medium berry gatherer (Parasaur/Trike)<Large berry gatherer (Stego/Megatherium)<Small/Medium meat gatherer (Raptor/Carno)<Large meat gatherer (Rex/Spino). This formula works for us, the smaller berry gatherers can tame from what berries you can gather around where they fall. This provides you narcoberries to tame larger tames like the stego which will increase the number of berries you gather but also protect you against small to medium carnivores like raptors and carnos. Once you have a large berry gatherer your narcoberries are secured and then you can get some meat gatherers. In addition to providing meat for taming they can make nice escort tames for your berry gatherers. Once you can reliably gather meat then you can tame a larger carnivore like a rex or spino and then you're on your way.

4. If you're the sociable type and on official you might interact with others in your server but REFRAIN FROM CONSTANTLY BEGGING OTHERS FOR HANDOUTS. If you want to ask at the very start if anybody has some low level dinos or spare tools to help you get started that's fine but don't just go "Hey I'm new, anybody got some free stuff to give me?" Honor your trades and build a good rep in the server and people can be surprisingly nice (but watch out for jerks)

There's probably other things that could be said but that's generally how we start out on a new map from square one, hope it helps.

What I mean is I just joined this site and PS4 messed up and yeah anyway this was my thoughts on 1, 2, 3, and 4

1. yes base is always what I start on

2. I use thatch BUT put it high as I can get it to avoid damage and other players and quickly level up for wood then stone finally metal

3. I do not gather many berries unless starving and for great herbivore tames cause I find meat or it finds me sooner or later

4. I'm shy and stay away from people and play single player most of the time

I thank you for your help if there is anything else i'm missing please tell me :)

naa, was someone else I guess...And I do like the start up....Its kinda challenging being limited, struggleing to get going.....do you go the easy route? Do you go for this engram next, or that one? Do you try to prepare for the future or do you worry about the here and now?.......Its good, I wish there was more to it. More of it as well.

Cool Cool Fun Fun i'll try it

If your gutsy, you could try tameing a high level frog, leveling him up, then pushing 100 or so healing potions, then hit the swamp cave really quick to level up obsurdly fast......take it slow tho....really slow.....maybe only hit the first or secound wave of dragonflies, then get the heck back outa there.

I did that on official legacy server......Helped my tribemate go from lvl 5 to lvl 70 in one run.

OOooooohhhhh........ok, now I got a bit more meat to chew on for thought......Ok, if you really want to get a bit more advice on what you should try out......get the "bola" and "club" engrams unlocked.....either go find a couple of explorer notes, or build something....maybe kill something.

Once you get those two engrams, here is a bit of a challange. First one is easy and simple, try to tame a <level 20 duckbill dino....AKA a parasaur. These guys are fairly easy, all they try to do is run away when you attack them, so no worries if they get free....Equip the bola, snare them in place {it only lasts 20 secounds} and once they have been snared, you can start to attack them with a baseball bat to knock them out.
Once they have been tamed up, they are really usefull as your first berry gathering tame.

Once you have gotten used to that, you can try the harder challange, of your first raptor......Try to find the lowest level raptor you can find, below lvl 20 should be the target, and do the exact same thing to them as you did to the parasaur. However when you try to knock them out with the club, don't go for the face, or anywhere around in front of them. Instead try to hit them in the hindquarters, this will keep you safe from their frontal attacks.

Get a parasaur for narc berries, and a raptor for meat, and you have your first narcotic production farm.

Keep in mind however, that you will kinda need to get saddles for them both to make it much more viable. Hit more explorer notes if needed.

My advice for starting a singleplayer game or how I usually start is:

1. Do an explorer note run, you can find videos on youtube.

2. Build a starting base while you have the increased xp from the notes.

3. Tame some dodos to sit in the house, mostly females with one or two males, then tame a lystro to sit with them, easy to tame just hand feed mejoberries. Once you can craft a food trough place it near the tames, usually outside the house where the dino pen will be/is, fill the trough with berries and then use the dodos and lystro to store low weight items.

4. Tame dinos. A parasaur is a good start to get the berries to tame other herbies, trike and stego are both good next steps for herbivores as is an iguanadon. The iguanadon can run on all fours without losing stamina and can turn berries into seeds, which is useful for establishing a farm and for feeding gatchas if you get one from the extinction map.

4a. Dilos are an easy carnivore tame all you need is a slingshot and a pocketful of stones to take one down, bolas are helpful if they are in a group. Hunting with a pack of dilos is fun but not as effective as a pack of raptors. When you upgrade to raptors you can put the dilos around your base on turret mode for a little extra security.

Once you can build with stone making taming pens will make taming much easier, a 2X2 stone foundation with stone doorframes all around it with wooden ramps leading up into it on one side is my preferred way of taming most dinos that will chase you such as sabertooths and terror birds. Just get them to agro on you and lead them up the ramp and into the trap, you can run straight out of the doorway but they can't.

I play solo offline and once I have tamed an argentavis I can pick up wild dinos and drop them into pens, that's how I got my baryonyx pair to breed for caving dinos. I  think that ability was removed from online due to griefing.

That is a great idea I built my taming pen with tek cause I was like awesome but it took way to long so thanks for the stone advice also I never picked up dinos using birds or Argentinians

I find the Argentavis to be one of the most essential tames to have as a utility dino, it gets a weight reduction on a lot of resources and can carry other harvesting dinos like the ankylo and beaver. The quetzal is also good for carrying harvesters with it's platform saddle but it is a bugger to tame solo.

You can do it offline, but you have to turn on PvP mode in the settings. This will allow you to pick up wild creatures with the argentavis, and then you can drop them in a taming pen. But the problem with this, is you will also have the problem of turning ON cryo sickness. Its not a terrible thing, if you toss out your cro podded dinos to quickly, the second one you toss out will fall asleep like it was tranquilized. Just gotta wait for it to wake up after that.

I usually just build traps tho as they are easier and lets face it, an argy can't pick up the big boys. In fact the only dino I found useful to pick up and bring to a trap was a thylo. Just never needed that ability. =/ But the cryo sickness was super annoying >.>

Yeah, its a bit of a trick, but so far every single first quetzal Iv ever gotten, I typically fall back on the argy + grappleing hook + parachute method.......Iv always wished I had a someone on the ground watching me cause of how bonkers it can get XD

But I am lazy and can sometimes only play for short sessions of an hour or less, in those sessions it's more time efficient to scout with an argy and pick up anything I want to tame. I mostly do it during colour events to grab any unique dinos for my non-story ark breeding center which I have on Valguero, it's also the only time I map hop.
