So I'm sitting in a chair, alt tabbed away from ark, battle metrics says...

everyone left the game, including me... and the server failed to respond, and scroll down - the current players list is empty...

So then I alt tab back into ark and I'm still sitting in the chair!? Got up and did some things, seems like I'm still playing, but I think nah, im probably super ghosted and will get booted in a min...
So then a few min later I see some ones name loggin in at the top of the screen (as per one of the options you can see when people join your server) and I check and I can still do things...

So I alt tab back to battle metrics, and it says I joined and it now shows me in the active players list, all with out ever getting booted and having to rejoin.
Not sure what to ask, just curious if anyone knows wth just happened in more details lol. Like networking crap - how does battle metrics recive a signal visa vis someone loggin in and out?

AFAIK, the game's "QueryPort" is used to obtain information about players.
BattleMetrics must use this to get the server information - The server doesn't contact BM but merely responds to it.

Interesting, so I probably didn't really get booted. The bm server queries the ark server and some how in its dilapidated ghosting state the ark server sends the wrong information... or maybe it was like okay here is the active players list: but then just failed to send any information wich bm interpreted as evryone logging out.

After update v313.33 - 09/18/2020
The servers in general seem to be running way worse, Resulting a greater amount of input lag, General lag hiccups. And unusually high ping for servers when half of the usual population of a given server logs in. And battlemetrics is often times having trouble getting a query from said servers. which is resulting in battlemetrics listing them as offline or invaild.

If BM was unable to query the server for a short time, it might have missed the fact that you left and rejoined.

This is true and also battlemetrics queries server every 5 minutes unless you are premium subber. So if you got kicked and back in that 5 minute window it wont ever show in battlemetrics.

Have noticed same thing. And most of those around 30 min downtimes listed are not actual crashes but bm unable to query servers. There are times when you cant connect to servers without getting connection failure multiple times in a row. Seems they are either limiting query amounts per second/minute or server has trouble accepting requests.

Pretty much; it have access to the same info any client would when browsing Steam's server browser.
