Beaver dams

On the Island you can find them along the river that runs on the outside of the redwoods and the hidden lake. Beaver dams are not your best option on the island as they are not as plentiful as other maps and produce inconsistent amounts of paste. Your best option is to tame snails but this requires the ability to consistently make veggie cakes for feeding so may not be the best option for you depending on how far along you are. If you're not prepared for snails then a chem bench and a good megatherium/doedic is your next best option. Take the megatherium to an area with a lot of insects like the central cave (artifact of the clever) (you will need to use a cryopod to get the megatherium into the cave so if you don't have acess a wolf/thyla is a good alternative), In the cave you can farm a lot of chitin with very little trouble. The swamp cave with a good frog will likely yield more paste than farming chitin from the central cave but is a much more difficult option.

Alright, but instead of a chem bench, why can’t I use a mortar and pestle?

Mortar and pestle is usable, chem bench just produces more for the materials.

Chem bench output is 3x for 2x input, so u get 50% more using chem bench instead of mortar for the same amount of resources, and faster too

Oh ok. I’ll make a chemistry bench
