Rag Crashing help needed

Rag Crashing help needed

So I've had the same issue over 3 installs of windows and its starting to piss me off. On rag when going through specific areas of the map my game just locks up and crashes. i have tried verifying game cache, reinstalling, reinstalling windows (for unrelated reason) and it persists. i got a 1080, 32 gb DDR4 Ram and an I7 7700k.

and yes i understand that with the fresh windows install its probably just an issue with ark inherently.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Got an error message? What parts of the map? Any mods? Server/ singleplayer/ non-dedicated?

Are you playing singleplayer, on a server, or in non-dedicated? Does it freeze instantly going near the area, or are you able to move around there fine most of the time? Also, what method are you using to move around when it crashes?

am on a boat on a server. its perfectly fine 90% of the time then going through "crash chunks" its just nukes itself rams my gpu up to max and stays there until i shut it down through task manager. not saying the server for obvious reasons

When going through the buggy areas specifically, does it always crash? Or does it only sometimes crash in the buggy areas? Also, since you're on a server, it's worth asking around and seeing if other people also get the same issue in the same areas, help narrow down if it's your end or not.

Also, try testing in Singleplayer. Try on a boat, try flying, try swimming. See what makes it freeze, if it's only on a boat or just being in the area. If it doesn't freeze at all in SP, it's likely something server-side. If it does keep freezing, as a bit more of a stretch, try loading it with no dinos spawned ( -nodinos launch parameter, at least in theory- I've never used that launch parameter myself, so I wouldn't know if it doesn't work for some reason. I just know it's supposed to prevent wild dino spawns. You'll also have to use destroywilddinos in console if you've loaded in Rag on singleplayer before). Maybe it's having trouble trying to load a specific type of dino that spawns in that area.

You also said that it maxes out your GPU? So it has abnormally high usage compared to normal? Are there any bases in the area, particularly if they're large? Do you know if there's a particularly large amount of overspawn or breeding dinos out of control? (If other people can enter the area fine, ask them)

So my experience on the hardware side of things isn't great- so take what I say here with a grain of salt. Idk if a struggling GPU can cause outright freezing, but if it can, that might be the issue. Trying to load something and it just can't for whatever reason or smth. Try running on lower graphics settings, or checking for new drivers or rolling back to an earlier version of the drivers are both common steps people take I believe.

Soz for long wait for response i appreciate the help. So it does give me an error code but i cant get it up on the screen because ark crashes ontop of it and is alwase on top of all running functions but i got a REALLY bad pic of it with my phone (legit couldn't find another way to screen cap iw because of ark doing its crash thing) sill legible tho.

link because img is to big somehow: https://gyazo.com/58533d4f4f1b324fd7a1ec328e53f143

As for some of your fixes i play with a group of like 7 and i am the only one that has this issue. It still persists even after moving it to a faster drive (was on ssd moved to m.2)

over different servers same result so don't think its dino over spawning

Dont think its a GPU problem going off the error i got but i could be wrong(Link above)

it seems to be trying to call on files that dont exist and thats why its crashing. again im not a programmer prob wrong.

Oh, D3D Device being lost. I don't think I've had any errors with it myself, but I've seen it around a couple times. I did a bit of googling- everything I'm saying next is just a summary of what I found, so take it with a grain of salt-

-One site said it's caused by difficulties communicating between the engine and GPU, one site said it's something to do with the GPU freezing too long and being forcibly closed by a Windows program (to prevent your system locking up), and a couple people said it's heat related.

Bad news is, there seem to be a lot of threads about, with a lot of different solutions, and a lot of them only sometimes working. Additionally, most of what I've seen seems very technical- I saw something about registry edits- so if any of the simpler fixes I found don't work, you'll have to look into the more complex ones yourself.

Some of the less intimidating fixes I found were updating- Steam, Drivers, and the UE4 engine itself. I doubt heat is the issue here since it triggers in certain areas, but it's worth monitoring if you can.

Since I have no experience with this, I can't really help beyond pointing you to some pages I found that seemed promising. Otherwise, just googling 'unreal engine is exiting due to d3d device being lost' will pull up plenty of results.

Good luck, and I hope you can find something that fixes it!
