Early Game Lessons

So I’ve restsrted my single player game a third time now. My first game was easy single because that’s all there was. Once other difficulties were introduced I started a hard game. Sadly I have been forced to restart. I want to share some of the things I have learned in case somebody can be helped with a few small tips. Maybe somebody can add in better tips.

So my first easy game I started in the noob south and gradually made my way east then north to the redwoods. The redwoods is where I stayed and still prefer. Made lots of mistakes and did a lot of reading. Setup a couple of ocean access bases along the south and west parts of the islands. Also setup a lot of small camps in the north. Second game I started in the ne by the hidden lake area. Hated it. No near spawns for easy leveling. Metal was a treck to get to. Eventually made my way back to the redwoods. Instead of an ocean access base I used a boat. I explored the redwood treehouses. Those were neat. Setup mining camp on volcano and had a tree house by swamp cave. My main base was in the north eastern part of the redwoods, which I love. Then my game bugged and I had to start over. This time I’ve set back up in the south.

One thing I’ve learned from my first to second game is the use of traps. From the second to third I have expanded that to a boat trap. First game was a pain trying to hit things on the move. Hoping there was a good rock or cliff to shoot from. Then in the second game when I used more traps I was finding the right tame and hoping you can setup the trap before it takes off or you get attacked. I started with fence foundations and doorways. I then moved onto gateways. The nice thing about gateways is less parts and it doesn’t block spawns unlike the fence foundations. The griffin type trap is great for smaller dinos and a triangle or square of behemoth gates for larger dinos. In my newest game I figured I’d try a boat trap after failing miserably at taming a raptor when an alpha raptor ruined my expedition. You can’t get all dinos with it but that is a fun toy. I can entice it in and bring it home. No worries about getting ambushed by a large predator.

My first game I setup walls with fence foundations and walls. That was a pain and blocked resource spawns. Second game I used all gates. I then had tons of trees, bushes, and rocks to gather. Got a doed, two beavers, their, and Bigfoot and I was never short on resources. Never had to gather anything. I had three harvestable redwoods in my base so the two beavers and theri were parked on top of them and they would harvest as soon as it spawned in. Mass points into weight and watch everything happen automatically. You may lose a doed or Bigfoot doing this but once you are at that level you most certainly will have an argy and taming pen. So it’s not difficult to retame them. I kept a high level doed for obsidian gathering on the volcano.

Another thing I’ve leaned as I’ve gone along is the utility of moschops. In my latest reincarnation I got three. Maschops, Menoschops, and Bobchops. They simplify life early game significantly. Just check in on them time and again and they’ll have fiber, thatch, wood, and tons of berries. Since they aren’t specialists they won’t gather a ton of each but early game you don’t need a ton of each. The only thing I need to worry about is stone and metal.

Now about metal. Early game it’s all about the pick until you can get an argy and anky. It’s a pain in the patuska to have to hoof it. So I’ve found the iguanadon to be a great early mount. Put them on all fours and they can really move fairly fast. They can also haul a fair amount for early game standards. Entice a high level iguanadon in your boat trap and invest points into weight and speed. It will make cross country travel much easier and cross country hauling much easier. Also on all fours they don’t lose stamina. I was able to save enough metal for an ascendant longneck with only my pick and iguanadon.

Did I mention boats because boats!  Most of this is single player oriented because that’s what I play. Set your sea mount on passive and following the boat. Tell the rest to follow the passive tame. You can take off and have no worries. Park it out deeper where things don’t tend to venture and if they try you have your horde of creatures ready. I also like to keep a baryonyx in my sea group for their stun. Once I get late game it can be tossed as a basil with two mosa guards should be able to handle the ocean.

Lastly otters. Love the little guys. Get an otter and breed. Put all stats into attack. You will never get hot or cold. You can farm for black pearls with the little guys. They can be trained with prime fish meat.  So get your scythe out and whack at some salmon when you find an otter.

Hope this helps somebody out there!
