20GT
I'm building a ramp and thought I was doing good till I saw that I overlooked a small impassable spot in the middle. Since I've gotten so far should I work from the bottom up? I was attempting the pillar trick but even though I had connected each one by ceiling tile as I went down eventually it no longer worked. It's like the ramps are a bit short and throw it off sync. Nothing like the YouTube ramps. Official no collision server.
MirageUK
We had this on a few ramps and just add another ramp to clip through the ceiling no? That might not be possible on official - we have the no clip settings enabled on our unofficial.
Baton
to build straight ramp like this u need to use walls, diagonal walls, ceilings and diagonal ceilings

MirageUK
I will have to check when I get home this evening - turn off clipping and give it ago. Been long time since we run the server without the collision stuff disabled - and now use the s+ mod which has better ramps to fit in with wall/foundation sizes. I guess you started at top with pillars and worked down snapping each pillar to the next then ramped down? - 4 hours before I get home yet though but I will try and work it out and get back to you. Thanks that would be great Yes I started at the top with a pillar and ceilings dropping pillars as needed then removing the ceilings and placing ramps. Tonight I'm going to go into single player and extended the ceiling all the way out until I think the bottom of the ramp will touch ground. That should anchor all the support needed. Then I'll come back and remove all pillars over 3 high and see if the ceiling stays. Then start the ramp down and see if it goes out of sync. Grrr lol

MirageUK
Wow that's taken a turn for the more creative - good work. I tried the simple ramp last night and had success starting with pillars at bottom and working my way up to get them all snapping and managed to lay a ramp all the way down in one go. But then tidying up the pillars poking through half of it fell again... grrrr. ARK is definitely trying at times.
20GT
That was from the top for me but I hit a snag. A lip protrudes just enough to stop my anky. If you look closely you can see him up there. It's a fresh start from a ceiling tile so I'm not sure why it protrudes.
20GT
The pillar trick definitely doesn't work in reverse. I thought as long as one end was anchored and the proper foundations where in place that it might hold. But when I removed the top connection to every ceiling tile except for the first couple the tiles collapsed. Did you use ceilings from below? MirageUK
I started with pillars at the bottom but only placing enough to make a snap for the next pillar up the cliff face. When I got level with top I added a ceiling or two to the land and then started the ramps down from top ceiling. This is what I ended up with:
MirageUK
Just tried same trick on a more awkward cliff face.. fail. Got 5 ramps down, no more foundation support. Looks like we're just being ARK'd - bit like being punk'd but by a game
MirageUK
I now know why I didn't go with the "ramp" method to the surface on Aberration - even though we do have Structures+ mod installed on that so might not be too bad. Elevator all the way ... now to spend some time in my surface man-cave to contemplate my ramping failures ... ... yep, it is certain. Ramps suck! 20GT
Massive ramp on the other side of my mountain. If you zoom in you can see the supports. The second picture is the bottom middle and you still can't see the end in the pic

MirageUK
.. and the winner is GP. Structures Plus Glass Wall - Opaque. edit: It's actually 6 glass walls but with the models selected to border the entire thing to frame the map and "to do" signs. 20GT
Ok I started over from scratch on single player and then managed to finish my ramp on the official server. The other pictures show some weird abnormalities like no support on a tall pillar until I added an extra ceiling tile And one spot where I had support on the side of a tile but not the front. Same spot
lokifeyson
Ah yes making snap points.... So much fun lol, I tend to start all ramps from the top, unless I'm going from the top, over a river and to another top Here is me at one of the island bases I had made
20GT
I now try to estimate and start from the bottom. But now that I'm getting the hang of it I'd really prefer to start at the top. Just haven't had much success in the past. Now I connect a ceiling tile to every lower pillar so it's a cohesive unit. I've edited in the pictures on my post this morning please look again

Woodsman
if your ramp is only 1 ceiling wide what u can do is build it to the side of where ur current ramp is (so all the supporting structure is 1 ceiling to the side instead of directly under neath it). u should be able to build a single long ramp from top to bottom this way
