Welcome to Unevolved Gaming,

As requested in the comment section, we are going to take a closer look at the Direwolf

The Direwolf is a medium sized mammal that shows a large resemblance to the modern day wolf. They are very aggressive carnivorous hunters and can usually be found roaming the cold snow covered regions of the island. Direwolves on the Island usually hunt in large packs varying in size from 4 to 8 members, On Scorched Earth however direwolves spawn as single wolves due to the fact that their pack boost would otherwise make them to strong opponents.
Similar to Hyenadons the highest level Direwolf will be the pack's alpha and has a glowing red aura surrounding it. If the pack's alpha dies or get's separated, another Direwolf will take its place and become alpha.

When attempting to kill a Direwolf survivors will have to keep in mind that the snow biome is not the safest place to be on foot, there are many other hostile creatures in the area, such as the Yutyrannus, Daeodon and Sabretooth. Wild Direwolves are almost always found in packs and can easily swarm and kill even larger and more powerful mounts. Their pack also provides them with a damage and mate bonus which makes them opponents that should not be underestimated. Direwolves are however vulnerable to attacks from creatures that deal knock back such as the Spinosaurus. A Survivor that encounters a pack of Direwolves on foot is best of shooting them with ranged weapons from an elevated position where the pack can not reach you or from an ice shelf where the wolf will have to swim to get to you.

When killed a Direwolfs corpse can be harvested for raw meat hide and pelt.

In order to tame a Direwolf safely a survivor will have to separate it from its pack, this can be done by picking up the Direwolf with an Argentavis or Quetzal and dropping it in a taming pen on a location of choice. Survivors that play on pve or don't have access to an Argentavis or Quetzal can also make use of bola's and bear traps to stop a single Direwolf in its tracks.
A taming pen made out of door frames will prevent a trapped Direwolf from escaping and can be very useful when knocking out the wolf with tranquilizer arrows, darts or shocking tranquilizer darts without getting hit.

Direwolves are carnivores and can be tamed with all kinds of meat or fish, they do however prefer Carno kibble, raw mutton, raw prime meat and raw prime fish meat.

When knocked out a Direwolf only requires a relatively small amount of narcoberries, narcotics or bio toxin to keep their torpor up while taming.

Once tamed a Direwolf does not require a saddle to be ridden, it does however allow survivors to make full use of their weapons while mounted.
To compensate for the lack of armor that is normally provided by a saddle, a tamed direwolf has a natural damage reduction of 40%. Tamed Direwolves also receive a bonus when they are in a pack, each wolf in the pack will add a 5 % damage bonus with a maximum of 20% these bonuses stack with mate and imprint boost if available. The highest level wolf or alpha will get an additional 50% damage bonus.

Direwolves are quite fast while running and have a low stamina drain, they also have the ability to jump over obstacles by pressing the A button on your controller. Survivors will have to keep in mind that jumping from high obstacles can result in fall damage.

A Direwolf is actually a surprisingly strong mount, it's bite attack which can be performed by pressing the right trigger on your controller is very fast and can be devastating for your opponents especially when your Direwolf has a pack and mate bonus. This bite attack can be used while running and will harvest large amounts of chitin, pelt, hide, leech blood and angler gel from creatures that drop these resources, it can also be used to harvest decent amounts of raw prime meat and organic polymer.

It is also possible to make your Direwolf howl by pressing the left trigger on your controller when mounted, this howl however has no real purpose in the game.

In my opinion the Direwolf is a very useful mount with a wide variety of uses in both pve and pvp, It's decent movement speed and low stamina drain make it a mount suited for scouting and traveling, while its relative small size even allows it to enter most caves. A single Direwolf is already very powerful by itself, a pack of wolves however can take down larger and stronger creatures in seconds and are a great addition to any base defense. Even though Direwolves can be very useful to gather materials such as chitin and pelt they lack the capacity to carry large amounts of these resources, it is therefor advised to upgrade a wolfs weight before using it for this purpose.

That concludes our spotlight on the Direwolf
