Jen
Hey Survivors! Welcome to the latest edition of the Community Crunch! The Community Crunch is where we share important things going on with ARK, as well as host contests and showcase creations made by the community! Let's get started with some news. Introducing the Phoenix! A new Dino Dossier has been revealed, this one is everyone’s flaming fire flyer, the Phoenix! Common name: PhoenixSpecies: UnknownTime: UnknownDiet: Flame EaterTemperament: Elusive Wild Among the most mysterious of all flying creatures, much of what is known about the Phoenix exists in legends which have been told through generations. These myths have often changed through the passing of time, but one constant is the belief that fire represents cleansing and renewal. The Phoenix embodies this process through its everlasting cycle of death and renewal. Extreme heat-waves in the desert seem to initiate the rise of the Phoenix, while the end of this so-called "Super Heat" precipitates the creature's reversion into ashes. While the Phoenix seems ambivalent to most wildlife, if provoked, its ferocity is evident in its ability to set targets aflame with a single bite. Domesticated Attempting to pacify a Phoenix is, quite literally, playing with fire. The Phoenix must be continually set ablaze in order to be tamed. I've seen many turned into dust and ash in the attempt. After it has been pacified, the Phoenix will regain its vitality when it is aflame! Although its compact size prevents the Phoenix from being ridden, its aggressive enflaming has proved to be invaluable in battle. Plus, it can quickly roast up tasty cooked meat and refine raw ores at any time, as a living furnace! ARK Digest 48! Here is our question and answer session with Lead Designer, Lead Programmer, Co-Creative Director of ARK: Survival Evolved, and Co-Founder of Studio Wildcard: Jeremy "Drake" Stieglitz! Survivor Monics asks, “When it comes to game performance in general... The game has come a long way I believe, optimization wise... But still, is missing quite a bit. What are your plans moving forward regarding these specifics?” Quote A lot of server-side work in particular, more physics threading and more efficient networking. For clients, one of the biggest areas for potential improvement currently is faster rendering of large bases: using instanced meshes to render hundreds of structures in a single draw-call. After that, general profiling. DX12 is still of interest, but we need to do more analysis to make sure it’s a real benefit to players -- the gains were small last time we checked, and the drivers were unstable, though I imagine a lot has improved over the past year, so will be taking another look at it! Survivor DangerPlayz asks, “Hey Jeremy! I play a lot of singleplayer and am very happy with the changes you have made recently! However, can we please get an option to remove the engram points system and unlock all engrams at a certain level, when we reach said level. Thanks!” Quote Will do, easy enough. Survivor Caseybear asks “Will the small CrossArk cluster servers be gaining access to Ragnarok and other future content? If so, any idea when?” Quote Aye, it should be added when we allocate more server machines at launch. Survivor IGNWhyt asks, “Will you please address the issue where the game takes up 100+GB? Is this intended? Are there any plans on reducing the size?” Quote It’s intended. In essence, much of the content exists in two forms: seekfree (for fast-loading of the basic game), and non-seekfree for support of Mods and Total Conversion to use individual assets. That said, there is a strong argument the non-seekfree files necessary for Mods should be contained in an optional “Mod Support” DLC pack, and not part of the immediate base game. Will consider this in the days ahead. Survivor RaifuForLaifu, asks “Can we get a damage reduction on The Dragon's fire breath pretty please with extra sprinkles on top? 25% feels a tad ridiculous. Thank you” Quote It shall be done! Survivor Blackwolfe asks, “You earlier mentioned that you were reworking the kibble tree. Will this also affect the kibbles asked for when imprinting dinos? Beacuse kibble for imprinting I think is a large part of why people feel forced to have a lot of dinos (together with the kibbles needed for taming).” Quote Yes, we have a tentative rework of the Kibble Tree that will be going live on the post-retail-launch “Experimental” branch for public feedback. Survivor GamerPerfection asks, “Can you make the Tribe Logs record your Tames/Turrets kills? I find it frustrating not knowing what they've actually killed when i'm not around.” Quote It shall be done! Survivor Mendoza asks, “Can we get Sun Glasses added to the game to help reduce glare?” Quote Yep. Survivor iAmE asks, “Do you plan on hiring any additional support staff? I would figure any number would be nice, as you would seem to be going up from what appears to be zero (4-6 Month ticket turn arounds hurt this game an immense amount.” Quote Yeah, as we get into retail launch and beyond, more Support Staff is going to be needed and we’ll be getting that buffed in the coming weeks. Survivor Touhma asks, “As A server Admin I want an option that can allow me to have a full customisation on Taming time / ressources Any chances to have this options : * TamedDinoCharacterFoodDrainMultiplier -> To avoid the consumption of ressource after taming ( when foodDrain is up ) * WildDinoCharacterFoodDrainMultiplier -> To tweak the speed of taming whitout affect the tamed dinos ( when foodDrain is up and avoiding the effect on tamed dinos ) * WildDinoTorporDrainMultiplier -> To have a use of narcotics ( because of TamingEfficiency make narcotics almost useless en taming time is less than offi ) * PassiveTameIntervalMultiplier -> To adjust the interval between 2 feeding tentative for passive tame dinos ( because if the foorDrainMultiplier is greater than 2 the dino is dying when trying to tame it ) Why I want these changes: Quote Those are good, and we’ll get it done! Survivor CottonCandy asks, “1) Is there any chance we'll see an option to enable NVIDIA Ansel on servers that don't care about people using it to cheat, etc?” Quote Yeah, we’ll just add the capability to use Ansel if you’re an admin :-P Survivor PaladinKong asks, “Will those who have the game now in early access be able to get the physical items that come with the collectors edition, like the dossier book, without having to buy another copy of the game?” Quote The company that manufactures & distributes the Collector’s Editions (which is not us directly) has told us that when they sell out, they can manufacture more that are CE-only (and thus cheaper) without the game included. I think we’re close to selling out, so we’ll bug them about it now. Survivor johnm81 asks, “Prim+ players have been told that load times for pc version can't be addressed till after alpha. Now that alpha is over what are the plans to lower the 5-15min load times for this total conversion?” Quote Yep, we need to do give it a proper Seekfree cook which would then have the same load times as the base game. We’ll do so soon. The problem is that it has to then be updated (recooked) more often as well, but I think we can handle it. We may also provide Dev Kit authors with the option to do a (large but super-fast-loading) Seekfree cook. Survivor legendaryc4 asks, “can console players get the option to hold back the left stick to slow flyers down? Very big here for me as building high up can be a pain.” Quote Yes, we’ll add this. Been on the todo list for a while but darn the limited buttons available on gamepad. What you suggest seems like a good way to go with it. Survivor Lowly asks, “Can we get some sort of flame retardant suite, firefighter suite, racing driver type flame retardant suite, to fit into the modern technology side of scorched earth” Quote Yes, Bio/Hazard Suit is incoming. Survivor Dustiest-Ninja asks, “On a scale of 1-Incredible Hulk how much did dealing with the PhysX Engine for the tek ATV-jeeps make you rage?” Quote It was… interesting. In all fairness, we actually had to modify the lowest-level PhysX code in order to make it work halfway-decently :-P I hope to do more with that soon. Survivor Syntac asks, “Will you guys ever implement the Hive, the creature in the dev kit that looks like a giant beetle?” Quote After the Phoenix Survivor Gelantious asks, “Any news related to Vulkan? Still having hopes you guys will move over to it and ditch the idea of dx12, since it would help Linux users as well and all windows users, not just the windows 10 players.” Quote Unreal 4’s own official Vulkan integration was only like half-functional when I last reviewed it a few months ago. I’ll take a look shortly to see if it’s farther along. Once Epic has got it going fully well (fully matching the functionality and pipeline of DX11 & Shader Model 5), I’d like to try to incorporate it into ARK. Survivor tolle79 asks” lets be serious the question of all quetions is why doesnt the doedicurus gather berries? Like how does it survive in the wild?” Quote It ought to gather berries! :-P Survivor LordMaxilos asks, “TEK: Is there any chance that some sort of TEK Bow will be introduced to the game? As well as a TEK Arrow who will split up into three when you shoot it or something?” Quote Tek Bow isn’t a question of “if”, just a question of “when”! Survivor Redstorm8616 asks, “Growable Cactus Sap?” Quote Hmm, could be fun. <*Ouch, prickly!*> In all seriousness, we should totally do it and will. Would be fun to have more growable crops. Survivor mleii asks, “Can we get some videos showing what the Xbox One X will look like in game?” Quote Soon -- the Xbox One X runs at 1440p 30 FPS using “PC High” settings, or 60 FPS 1080p using “PC Medium” settings (we’ll provide the Option for either High or Medium modes). Also because the Xbox One X has so much available RAM, ARK for Xbox One X has a new 4k texture pack (free DLC) and when the a non-dedicated multiplayer host is Xbox One X, the clients don’t have a distance-tether! It was shown behind-closed-doors on August 8 Xbox One X event at Microsoft, so I think we can take some video from that build. The Great Migration! We have some very important news for Survivors playing on our official servers. This coming Tuesday (August 22nd) we will be posting the list of servers that will be taken down on our launch day and re-purposed for the new servers, while all other existing servers become Legacy servers. For those who decide not to migrate, the saves for these servers will be uploaded and provided, which you can then download and use to host your own unofficial servers with all of your stuff intact. Closer to release date we will also be communicating how these servers will be allocated, so you can prepare to take over a new server! ARK: 3x Evolution Event Weekend! Survivors across ALL Platforms will be receiving a special Evolution Event+++ perk this weekend! It's already live now and will remain active until Monday the 21st at 12PM EST. All Official Servers will be undergoing this evolutionary change which includes: 3x Harvesting Rate 3x Taming Rate 3x EXP Rate 3x Maturing 3x Hatching 3x Gestation 3x Faster Mating Interval Rates Reminder: this 2x bonus is on top of the 2x rates that are now standard on our official servers! Community Contests! Player Procedurally Generated Maps! UDGxKnight
A little sad the Phoenix isnt rideable, but still extremely excited for this utility tame! Also even more excited to see the Hive (and Swarm assuming they come together)!!!!!!
GreenRoc
Quote * TamedDinoCharacterFoodDrainMultiplier -> To avoid the consumption of ressource after taming ( when foodDrain is up ) * WildDinoCharacterFoodDrainMultiplier -> To tweak the speed of taming whitout affect the tamed dinos ( when foodDrain is up and avoiding the effect on tamed dinos ) I have been asking for that for AGES! So excited! finally! It's about dang time this was recognized!!! Thank you thank you!!! You have no idea how much this means for my private server!!!! I haven't had my private server online because we've been unable to keep our tames fed (schedules of residents, not enough available time).. I have wanted this config separated for so long! Posted about it from time to time! I have wanted to set Tame Dino Food Drain to 0.0 without affecting wild hunger. I am so excited you'll be adding these AT LAST! I struggle to contain myself! SO happy! Thank you!!!!

Squattingturtle
Im extremely disapointed that the Phoenix isn't a mount. I was so sure that it would be. I was looking forward to this for so long and hoping that it would exist. It doesn't make sense, how are you going to be able to control it then? If its a shoulder mount, i doubt smelting metal is going to be very effective, if its not a shoulder mount or a mount then its going to be some awkward creature that you will have to set to follow which always ends in disaster. My thoughts exactly. If other utility shoulder/non-mount dinos are anything to go off, the phoenix is going to be a hassle to make good use of. A forge on a good weight paracer would probably be better. Let us ride it!

ArkDoneRight
With server release 11 days away, why would you neglect all the questions about when the server is being released (specific time). Even straight up answering, "we don't plan on telling you, just start hitting refresh as soon as its the 29th and cross your fingers!" would be more helpful then this digest... I just don't see a more pressing question, all the questions are generally not going to be implemented in the next 11 days. Unless you patch hard. Hurry up and pull your finger out
Spazegamer
If the Phoenix isn't rideable, and it isn't a shoulder mount, the dev team needs to work on the following system. It would be very inconvenient to move the phoenix around.

Wolf Angelus
1 hour ago, Valoule said: Wolf angelus and me had the same idea and the postcard for this one ^^ Great crunch as always Haha, I swear you are my long lost brother or something. This is the 2nd time too, a few weeks ago we both did a pixel painting which neither of us ever do I thought it was being super creative in doing a postcard style picture since it has not been done before. Pretty funny. I think you and need to hang out some time or chat, so similar lol. On another note, and don't get the wrong idea, I am always thankful for prizes, but my friends (some who play ARK, some who don't, some who are builders too on various games) said I should post on it, I was trying not to, but peer pressure gave in and they said I should stand up for how much effort was put in and at least try. This is coming from them who have seen all I built, and check out the competition - they at this point feel there is some sort of bias against me here (regarding the building portion) as this is supposedly my best creation to date, (I personally rank it around 3rd or 4th best), and believe the result should not be what it is as the builds weren't comparable. In their words, this was a "has to win" creation (I did show them all entries earlier on this morning as i was completing mine). I can't say that I disagree with them, it does feel like there is a bias, or perhaps the video was not watched in full to see everything. I am mostly confused at the result. Thanks if you can clear this up a bit. I really don't know what to tell them either and they aren't impressed with you guys that this seems to not be based on content vs content.

Jekyl
Loving the new reveals, I have only one small suggestion is it possible to make the A.C. units pincodeable so they can be shut off when not in use. My hatchery room is above my base workshop and they are very noisy, would be nice to get some silence once and a while. Other than that I can't wait to see the new map and new creatures coming soon. Love the game aside from the ddosing looking forward to playing with real people who don't have to cheat to have fun... Keep up the great work. How about doing something similar for all the idling tame noises? (Especially in low memory mode where the loading of these sound effects can cause some pretty intense stuttering? Now in regards to the bias concern, i'll come on to that later. But lets have a look at the 3 entries for the ARKitect, as this is the category that you clearly spend a lot of time developing some pretty awesome designs (take note here, I complimented your work, that's something you never do for others). All 3 videos have very unique designs, but all have one thing in common, they are videos showing off the arkitect design as opposed to screenshots of them. However, in my opinion, the ARKitect designs are not solely based on the actual design of the structure, nor is it based on the time taken to make the design. It is judged on imagination, creativity, uniqueness etc. So lets take a look at the 3 specific videos and what my thoughts of them are. The City Challenge, Vanilla+ Base Tour by Flydive! Now, I started watching this one first, purely because it was first in the Crunch as it was the winner. My first thought of it, was actually a "oh another one", not so much a negative thought, but a thought that so many of these ARKitect videos are just someone controlling the camera showing off the design and having background music. Now there's nothing wrong with that, but sometimes it's nice to see something a bit different, a bit more personal and unique. I carried on watching though because the first 30 seconds of a video is too soon to judge whether I want to continue watching. After 53 seconds I was greeted with an actual human being, who actually added the uniqueness to this video by providing us with a narrated tour of his design. It wasn't just a tour of the design though, it was a history he gave as to why he built the town, why it exists and why he built certain things. He gave some insight in to what his thought process was regarding some of the structures. For example, at 2:58 he talked about how he was thinking about Skyrim when designing the sawmill. He also showed inside all the structures and gave us a guided tour of what the rooms are for. For example at 4:45 he explained the dining room and that it's where his guests will eat. These may appear as little things, but he's made it completely personal and entertaining to watch as it engages the viewer. I ended up watching the entire video and that is solely down to how he made the video more entertaining and unique for the viewer, because lets face it, making a video is designed for the viewership, not for winning money. Now the creator of this design, Flydive, clearly put a lot of time and effort, not only in making the town, but also recording his narrated tour and making the video. And believe me making a video of a narrated tour can be a lengthy process particularly if mistakes are made as it makes more work during editing the video. So overall a lot of effort was put into this one to bring a more unique entry to the Crunch. House Rangetsu - Inspired by Castle Himeji by Wolf Angelus! Next up is your one which I watched second because that's the order it was on the page. My first thought was that the design was very impressive, and it is extremely large and you can clearly see the time and effort put in to it. However, the size and time spent doesn't necessarily mean everything. The video, for a start was very long, particularly for a video that is just of you controlling the camera with background music. I realise you explained this at the beginning of the video on the ARK noticeboards, but still it was very long. However, I am honest in saying I was very impressed with the design, there are not many that would be so dedicated, particularly to detail to create such a structure. I really liked some of the detail, like when you had the Rex dossier (or maybe Giga, can't remember) sitting on the table on display. However, the big difference between the two videos is the narrated tour part. There was absolutely no explanation in your video of what all the various rooms were for or anything like that, which made the video just become a case of watching a camera, which unfortunately was very laggy due to the sheer size of the structure (not your fault whatsoever) showing us around buildings at day and night with no detail of what we are actually seeing, and watching that for 23 minutes. It lacked engagement with the audience. GoT: BUILDING THE SEVEN KINGDOMS Ragnarok | EP1 Pyke Castle | Ark Survival [ NO MODS ] by badassunicorn! Next up Game of Thrones! Who doesn't love a bit of death, back stabbing and dragons! Now this may attract more interest from Game of Thrones fans, but it's based on something that is very popular and something that is very current right now. I must admit it started off really well as the music attracted me to it and got me all tingly inside as I know Monday night is soon approaching again, however, that's neither here nor there. I was pleasantly surprised to have another narrated tour video. As I said, there's nothing wrong with the camera tour and background music, but a narrated tour which isn't as common currently provides more of a personal touch and engages the viewer more, along with giving more explanation or insight in to the design and why that particular design was chosen. This design and video was clearly made by someone that enjoys GoT, and they used that to decide on what designs they should make, and I can guarantee you that a video comes off better when you are doing something you enjoy, and if something is done solely for money then you will not enjoy it anywhere near as much as if you were doing it because of the subject, and as a result it will show in the final result. Both videos made by badassunicorn and flydive experienced very little lag. Now this is likely due to the size of the structures with your one being probably the biggest and therefore having more of an impact on performance. Of course PC systems will have an impact on that too. But, this just goes to show that size doesn't matter at all when it comes to ARKitect designs. It's all about the uniqueness, quality, imagination etc. I know more about the designs made by flydrive and badassunicorn than your one because they told us about it throughout their videos. This to me adds more to the experience of watching it, and everything should be included in the judging of the videos, and not just the actual design that has been made. Judging those 3 videos I would have to say the decision on the winner was correct. I thoroughly enjoyed flydive's video and tour of the ARKitect design. Now, on to the bias comment that you made. As I said i'm not speaking on behalf of Wildcard or the staff involved in the Crunch, but I can guarantee you with absolute certainty that there is no bias involved whatsoever. The bias issue is down to your paranoia and disagreement with the results. If you are paranoid that there is bias involved then i'm sorry but that is completely down to your own fault because of the way you present yourself each and every time the Crunch is here. I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of viewers in this Crunch pass your videos by because of the way you act. And the sad thing is that the majority of people in this competition that enter their videos are looking at the exposure side of things rather than the money and most likely see any financial reward as an added bonus. Whenever I enter videos it's always about sharing my creation with viewers and gaining new viewers, I could care less about the money. This time you posted you appear to come up with some story that peer pressure from your "friends" have made you post here. Now the reason I call it a "story" is not because I think you are lieing, but it is because everyone else will see it as a made up story to give you another opportunity to complain whilst putting the blame for it on your friends. Every single Crunch I read through I am expecting to find a similar post from you, and I am never surprised when I do. In the last Crunch you questioned, yet again, the decision making in the Crunch results and tried to claim that others were better than the winners, but at the same time stating you weren't talking about your own. You kept names out of it because you didn't want to single people out, but to me it seemed like you kept names out of it because you were actually talking about your own entry. So yet another deflection from your actual reason for complaining. Now, you could call me paranoid for thinking all that, but the reason I think all that is because of you, and how you act each and every time the Crunch is here. And if I am thinking that, then I can guarantee you others are too. Nobody likes your kind of attitude in a fun and friendly competition. You never comment positively on other people's work, you never give praise to anyone, you don't see this as a friendly competition. I am sure that it takes a lot of time for the staff that judge the entries in this competition, because lets face it there are a ton of entries that need to be looked at and watched and judged, and then this Crunch needs to be compiled. That is a hell of a lot of work, and as a result for all that work, they then come here and see you post negatively towards their work of judging all the entries just because you didn't win. I mean you came runner-up for christ sake, that's second place. The only difference between first place and second place is the financial reward. Second place gets the same amount of exposure as first place, therefore it all comes down to the money and that is the only reason you are here. There is no bias here, it is just people enjoying the creativity of the Crunch and recognition being given out to those that participate. Wildcard are the ones that pay you financial rewards for your creations, yet you pay them back with negativity, complaints and accusations of bias. I hope you took the time to read through this Wolf, because it took me a long time to write it and remain respectful.

Carnagovich
11 hours ago, Jen said: servers that will be taken down on our launch day and re-purposed for the new servers, while all other existing servers become Legacy servers. For those who decide not to migrate, the saves for these servers will be uploaded and provided, which you can then download and use to host your own unofficial servers with all of your stuff intact. HEY. Does this mean a wipe for some servers? We want to stay on legacy servers and not to migrate, and you say we can be wiped and moved to unofficial? what the heck?
