So what did you do in ARK today?

(Official, Valguero) Took a shotgun. Made ammo. Made soup. Made kibble. Uploaded all that+a podded wyvern and an empty pod.

I was determined to finally get an amarga.

(Official, Lost Island) Downloaded all that (and finally uploaded the magma saddle). Took the wyvern and went searching for amargas. Found some, tried some - trapless taming, predictably, resulted in dead amargas. Ended up settling on a beautiful 130 male. Built a trap - a box with a ramp, plus some spikes around to prevent dinos that I'll lure to it from hitting the amarga.

And... Best I got before running out of creatures to hunt was 4%.

Wasn't my only attempt with that amarga. Later I took down that trap because I spotted one of those proper amarga traps - and I couldn't even get him into it.

So, that's several hours wasted, resources wasted (Sure, I can upload the gun and ammo back And I did. But all that kibble - it stays. And unless I decide to tame something there, which is faily unlikely, it'll be useless), and I no longer want an amarga. It' not worth it.

(Official, Valguero) Imprinted gigas. The allo is adult now. Refilled the troughs, retrieved the saddle, gun and ammo, and that's all for today.

(The Island, SP) Just started a new game around West Coast 2.  Got my bearings, leveled up, tamed a 140 Parasaur.  Named her Sakura, because she's pink.  Collected metal from river rocks and smelted it up.  Found a second Parasaur, level 130.  Tamed her and named her Pepper, because I just watched Iron Man.  She is green.

Game crashed, reset to before I tamed Pepper, so I tracked her down and tamed her again.  Collected some metal... then the game crashed AGAIN!  So I tamed Pepper a THIRD time.  Decided to call it a day after that.  Luckily the game didn't crash again...

(Official, Valguero) In the morning bred things (sinos, wyverns, allos, tropeos, argents), cracked all eggs. Imprinted gigas.

That was all for some time because I decided to lay down for a bit and ended up sleeping until evening. That's a day wasted, but at least when I logged back in this time, gigas were ready for their FINAL imprint!

So I imprinted them. Took a magma and a gasbags to get some metal. And okay, I may return to ol' "Ankylo+argy" for serious metal runs - my gasbags can't carry nearly as much (8000 weight means nothing when metal is involved and weight reduction isn't). Even though magma feels much better because GIANT FIRE LIZARD OF DEATH.

Unpodded the wyvern for a bit of raising.

Fed dinos, filled a gacha with stone and got some element, unpodded and bred a pair of ankylos, also bred allos and yuties (one yuty egg stays).

Repodded the wyvern, and that's all for today.

(Official, Lost Island) Fed dinos. Then made some tranq arrows, took some narcotic, and went wandering - since I have all that kibble and no way to return it to the main base, might as well tame something. First I found a kapro. A high-level female kapro. Tried to knock out, but the thing was too smart - once it noticed that I'm out of reach, it started running away. Gave up - not much point in kapros anyway.

Then I saw an owl. A level 15 female owl, white. Would have been good for making more white owls happen if I ever returned to the owl project, so I tried to tranq that. But no trap and too many predators around - gave up on that, too.

Then I saw a griffin. 135, light colored (as it turned out later, Albino, BigFoot4 and NearWhite). Near a trap. A locked trap, but one of the gates was open, so I decided to try and use it anyway. I got the griffin's attention, and first tried to get it into the trap using my wyvern - sometimes just flying BY the trap ends up with the chasing dino getting trapped. No such luck this time, though. So I dismounted and lured the griffin in on foot. It hit me three times before I got out of the trap - and I wouldn't have survived the fourth.

But I was alive, griffin was trapped, and I started shooting. I shot and shot and shot. The griffin was getting really bloody then it turned around and flew out of the trap. I chased it and, over some cliffs, it finally fell!

To interact with it at all I had to stand on my wyvern as she hovered in place - the thing decided to make my life harder by falling over the part where landing is not possible.

I checked the griffin's stats with Dododex, and believe it or not, it wasn't a bad griffin! Highest stat melee.

So I tamed it, and podded it, and uploaded it, and returned home.

(Official, Crystal Isles) Refreshed base.

(Official, Extinction) Fed dinos.

(Official, Valguero) Gigas almost grown! Retrieved the griffin, named it Kestrel, exported stats - post-tame not bad either, 31 point in HP, 37 in stam, 31 in weight, and 40 in melee. I mean, it's pretty useless anyway (I have much better options for travel, combat, egg/milk runs... Honestly, the only thing my other tames can't do that Kestrel can is "be a griffin"), but it's nice to have a GOOD pretty useless tame.

Bred sinos, argnts and wyverns, didn't keep any eggs. Hatched yesterday's yuty egg and podded the resulting baby for later. And that's al for today.

Amargas are not worth it for PVE at all. They're good for pvp, but for PVE it's not that good. Creatures don't stay in the little effect globe long enough, and I don't think direct hits do anything different anyways. If you're attacking a base, then accuracy doesn't really matter. Amargas are heavy support creatures/siege creatures, but there's really not much they can do against something in PVE. They could be viable in some boss fights where there's a bunch of minions. I've tried them in creative. Their utility as a traveling mount is essentially the only reason to tame one of them in PVE. They're decently fast, can swim, keep you warm or cold, and they can hold their own against most creatures, or run away.

I know they're PVP tames. But I tend to base my tame choices on "wow, this looks fun" rather than "wow, this would be useful for me". Amargas look fun, too bad their taming method is so hard that no amount of awesomeness could make me try to get one again.

(The Island, SP)

Day two: Built a rudimentary shack near the Red Obelisk.  Collected lots of Narcoberries, made about 200 Narcotics.  Turned most of them into Tranq Arrows.  Left Sakura Parasaur at base.  Took out Pepper Parasaur (she has better stamina) to see what I could find.  First I find a 135 Triceratops.  Riding Pepper to get a better angle, I finally manage to knock her out.  Named her Jeanne, because she is triple-horned.

Jeanne makes an excellent bodyguard as I explore the south coast.  Finally reach the Lava Cave area.  There is a sheep there.  I built about ten campfires and turned the sheep into lamb chops.  Then I noticed a 145 Stegosaurus nearby, so I built a temporary wood taming pen and lure it in.  I tamed the Stegosaurus and named her Alice, after the Vicar of Dibley's not-too-bright friend.

Day three: With Jeanne and Alice in tow, I made my way to the Green Obelisk.  I decided to leave Pepper and Jeanne there for the time being, and rode Alice into the swamp.  I was looking for a frog, but instead I found a level 150 Baryonyx!  I quickly built a temporary taming pen (and killed several Dilophosaurs, Sarcosuchus, a Kaprosuchus, and a few Titanoboas along the way).  After a lot of maneuvering and almost dying, I finally manage to get the Baryonyx into the trap.  I managed to knock him out with only a few Tranq Arrows to spare.  Kill a few piranhas and tame him up.  I named him Desmond after a character in Lost.

I took Alice and Desmond back to the Green Obelisk.  I left Alice and rode Desmond back to my rudimentary shack.  I needed to make more arrows!  While the Narcotics were being made, I decided to have a little fun with Desmond.  An Alpha Raptor had wandered nearby, but it was no match for Desmond!

Whew!  That's enough Ark for now.  Luckily during the last two days, the game only crashed twice, and I didn't have to re-tame anything.  The game is going to crash even more, I'm sure, so I've come to terms with it.  The fact that Ark runs on Switch at all is a small miracle in and of itself...

(Official, Valguero) Gigas are all grown now, so I moved them to the carnivore corner and immediately bred them. The eggs were no good, but I'm still sure that now that I have three same melee females things will go much better.

Bred tropeos, allos and wyverns, but none of the eggs were any good.

Bred ankylos, and the egg stays - clean female, will raise her to use as a breeder.

Turns out, I forgot to disable breeding on the argents last time - but the eggs still had some health on them, so that's good. But none of the eggs were any good.

Unpodded two yuties and the wyvern.

Hunted with the griffin for a bit, and... Not bad? I mean, wyverns, obviously, are better, with their ranged attacks, and imprints, and the fact that I can always MAKE more (that is, WITHOUT having to first breed an army powerful enough to beat alpha bosses to unlock the cloner. Which is not something I want to do), but for a wild-tame non-breedable thing that was tamed yesterday and wasn't leveled much yet? Not bad at all.

Fed dinos, topped up tek troughs because yuties are staying out, podded the wyvern, and that's all for now. Or for today. Not sure yet.

How do you tell if an egg is good or bad?

Incubator! It shows you what gender the baby will be (the downside is that with twins and triplets they'll always be same gender, unlike when you hatch without the incubator), how many points there'll be in each stat, what colors are on what regions, and how many mutations are on it from each parent's side. It also has the egg just sitting there, waiting patiently until you MAKE it hatch - no more missing hatchings or picking up long-incubating eggs to finish them later.

It's from Genesis 2, but it can just as well be learned on Lost Island (that's where I got mine, as I don't have Genesis).

It's an awesome thing for anyone who doesn't want to waste time hatching an egg that may not even hatch into anything worth keeping.

I'm pretty new to this dino raising deal. How do you tell if an egg is good or bad?

You can tell if you have access to an incubator.  If you put the egg in the incubator, it'll tell you the baby's point distribution.  If you don't have access to one, you have to hatch the eggs to see the baby's stats.  Alas, I do not have access to an incubator since I play Switch...

(The Island, SP)

Day four: A good bit of grinding.  I've been grinding a lot behind the scenes but didn't write about it.  After making a crossbow, I took Desmond the Baryonyx  up to the western redwoods area.  Would you believe there are TWO high level dinos right next to each other!  A 140 Iguanodon and a 135 Stegosaurus.  I let them be as I built a taming raft.  Got stunned by Microrapt9rs, but Desmond finished them off.

First tamed the Iguanodon.  I named him Gideon, after Gideon Mantell, who first described Iguanodon scientifically and gave it its name.  Then I tamed the Stegosaurus, and named him Jagger after the Stegosaurus in Prehysteria (a movie I loved as a kid).

Kept my session short today.  And guess what?  The game did not crash!  Hooray!

Oh, yeah, I need a good yuty for bosses, any chance you have one you'd exchange for poly or something? if you're on steam official PVE

Sorry but no. While I am on Steam PVE indeed, my yuties are... Well. The original pair was tamed just for the eggs, and since then I've only fully raised two and achieved one mutation (on melee. Which was inherited form the worse parent, whose own melee was 4 points). So I cannot give you a good yuty because all I have are a few "well, it's fluffy, it screams, and it maybe wouldn't immediately collapse if you breathe in its general direction, but try not to do that anyway" yuties.

I rebuild the Spino Breeding Pen to house the Tek Strider we got, which involved crafted Behemoth Gate, 160 metal walls 60 metal ceilings, few metal foundations, pulled the turrets down moved the ammo crate , re built the walls higher, replaced all the  turrets  and giant hatch frames, re run all the electrical cables and junction boxes.... once the Strinder was confirmed to be able to move in and out of the secure pen I got my tribe mate to escort me to the blue zone, spent about 10mins strip mining metal into a Tek storage box back at base ended up with 80k metal.

Was a good run

PVE official Island

This week my partner and I finally got ourselves in position to attempt the Tek cave... again. lol.  After losing our team in the cave last month, we finally have a fresh new team of therizinos and a yuty commander.  We are adding levels to them over the next few days and hope to enter the cave again this weekend if our schedules line up.

We have all the confidence in the strength of the team, it's the silly human mistakes that worry us 🤣... but a new strategy is in play so we are full of positive thinking.

@KingOfTheFort Sorry bud, I play on XBox. But I would have helped you with a yuty if I could.

You could fly to where you want to go on your argy with the magma podded and use the argy to hold the metal. If you had a mining drill, they reduce the weight of metal in your inventory by 70% and would let you transfer the metal from the magma to your argy a whole lot easier

My argy wouldn't hold more than my gasbags would, if it's the one doing the holding - argent's leveled to almost 4000 weight, gasbags has, as I mentioned, 8000, so they're about same in what they can hold. It's really a matter of fun (giant lava lizard+inflatable tardigrade!) VS efficient (argent+ankylo). I have a mining drill but I rarely ever remember about it.

I just use my skiff, holds 16k. You can try and get the mats in a rep or exomek and have someone from another server with the engram join your tribe and craft it for you
For mining though, stryders are the best, they link up and send everything back to dedicated storage boxes so I just do that for metal runs. Then I just use a public teleporter that's at the metal spot and keep a giga podded for if I run into trouble.

Don't have any of that. As for inviting someone who has it... I'm just not one for interacting with people (one may wonder "But AllOfTheAllos, why, in the name of all that's ramshackle quality or higher, do you play online in that case?!" To which I answer: "No people where people are supposed to be feels weird. Doesn't matter whether or not I intend to talk to people that are there").

And anyway - my metal container is just a vault, it'll fill up fast enough after a few serious runs, and unless I decide to craft some more tek, or make saddles for my unsaddled gigas an yuties (though the aforementioned dinos are few in number, my insistence on making the best saddle I can for absolutely everything I have BPs for, combined with the quality of the BPs I have, can leave my vaults rather empty), it won't become empty again too soon.

Magmas have way better harvest rates than ankys so try and get a good argy and you will have a lot better of a setup than if you were to use an anky.

Stryders are the bomb..... 10mins 80k metal..... love it

Where are you getting 80k metal? I only get max 30k at the mountain I go to. It could be because I avoid doing the whole thing since I'm scared of my stryder dying. I only have one and it was gifted.

In Aberration, head to the Blue Zone ramp roughly 35,52 head down when the path opens up you swing hard right and following the path towards the glowing blue trees and the river at the edge of the river turn left and follow the ramp up toward the large centre tree / root all along there is plenty of metal nodes. My tribe mate escourted me their (we werent sure if i would aggro any dino or not) he cleared out all the Titanboas, Anthos, Megas, Ravs, Drakes etc while i strip mined

Today my connection problems (which, to be honest, are less of "things wrong with Wi-Fi itself" and more of "Windows 10 doing what Windows 10 does, because it thinks I started to take uninterrupted gaming/browsing for granted or something like that, I guess" cleared up somewhat, so I actually played! Okay, not really played, because I still feared that it'd disconnect if I try anything serious, but did more than the barest minimum. So:

(Official, Valguero) I fed the dinos, of course. All of them, whales included. Got some of the meat by hunting with my favorite wyvern, too - things were steady enough that it wasn't too risky to do that. Imprinted the yuty, hatched the egg I had in the incubator and podded the baby.

I bred gigas, yuties, allos, sinos, wyverns, argents and tropeos, kept the allo eggs, cracked the rest.

Made the dust I had in my inventory into shards, gave bees more flowers, decided that if tomorrow's even better connection-wise, I'll go to the swamp and get more mushrooms for the gachas.

(Official, Extinction) My argent and doed were outside of the base for some reason Returned them home (they weren't far), took the parasaur and got some berries, then took the wyvern an got some meat. Filled the trough. Heard a drop, but decided not to investigate.

(Official, Crystal Isles) Refreshed base, and gathered some more crystal for the wyverns. They're good on it, but it's always better to have more.

(Official, Lost Island) Killed my carno. I no longer need it, I don't use it, so no point in having it anymore. Got berries and meat, fed the dinos.

And that's all for today.

(Official, Valguero) Imprinted the yuty, took an argent and an anky and went to get some metal. Harvested ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING in the nearest two spots, returned home, put all that into the forge, and harvested everything in two more spots. A pretty decent metal run.

Took a therizino and went to the swamp, gathered rare mushrooms. Not a whole lot, ten stacks or so. Put that into the gacha trough.

Took griffin and just spent a bit of time flying around.

Checked the tek troughs - still good, no need to refill.

Saw an alpha rex near the base, but decided to leave it be. And that's all for today.

Y'know, for clearing stuff out, you could just have a giga or smt follow your strider and just wreck face. Or your could leave the stryder somewhere nearby and safe and then wreck face with your tame. That would work, in theory. Or just bring a magmasaur. Problem solved! Plus, stryders can take a few hits, so you could also have a podded giga, and do some ambush face wrecking :).

Official PvE

Been a few days since I was last here but I enjoy sharing my experiences.

I have tribed up with two friends I've met on a different server. We still have our solo bases but a shared base on another gen 2 server. It works really well, I'm into breeding, taming, boss fights and generally making the most of the mechanics of the game. One of the others does selling and trading and the other is a good builder and decorater. Between us we have a really nice looking base on the server and its going well. We share stuff there and clone/breed dinos for each other and take some of what we want back to our solo bases. Still my solo base is my main focus.

After a load of breeding whilst the evo event was on I managed to produce another hp mut on my yutys and produced some down bred rexs. These were then bred with my super rex and I got a female with only high hp and melee and very low everything else plus she has shows no mutations on the maternal side 👍. Perfect for breeding a boss rex army.

Bred our 2 event coloured megachelon on the shared base, I have the baby back at my solo and boy do those things eat! Almost as bad as gacha babies at draining troughs. Speaking of which, after a few rounds of breeding I have obsidian, black pearl and dust gachas so I don't need to breed those anymore.

Found 2 unicorns (one on island map and one on rag) recently which I tamed, sadly both were male but one of my tribemates had a female so a clone and a baby are already here.

Went reaper hunting with a server friend the other day, but after killing 15 + queens we never found higher than a lvl 90. So agreed to come back during easter event.

(The Island, SP) Raided some beaver dams.  Found a 135 beaver and tamed it.  Named her Justine.  Had her gather enough wood to build a tree platform.  Headed over to the redwoods on Desmond the Baryonyx, placed the platform, and built a ramp to the ground.  Went back to the Green Obelisk and moved the dinos waiting there to the new redwoods base.  That's all for now, since I have to play in short sessions... or risk the game crashing.  Which isn't fun...
