Hey Survivors! Welcome to the latest edition of the Community Crunch! :Jerbhi:

ARK is coming to PS4 December 6th!


If you haven't already heard the news, PS4 is finally going to be joining the ARK Tribe!

ARK Digest 43!

Here is our question and answer session with Lead Designer, Lead Programmer, Co-Creative Director of ARK: Survival Evolved, and Co-Founder of Studio Wildcard: Jeremy "Drake" Stieglitz!

Survivor, WatcherCCG asks, “Could we perhaps get an admin command to bypass the need to have materials on hand for crafting. When I do creative base building in single player, it's always a massive hassle juggling all the giveitem commands for the various items I need to build, and this would probably be super helpful with that.”


Yes, we’ll do it in v253!

Survivor, Avios asks, “Will carnivores ever get a "hunger" sort of system to them, instead of them being a bottomless pit and eating everything in sight?”


Not by us, but a Mod could pretty easily add that! Would just require adding a networked float “Hunger” variable to the base Dino Character BP, increase it slowly over time, and toggle the dinosaur’s targeting and eating values depending on whether the hunger value is over a certain amount -- and reparenting various Dinos to that (or use a TC).

Survivor, BIRVM asks, “How will the Tek Cave work? Will you find the materials to make Tek tier objects, or will you find the objects itself in the cave? And will it have guardians to defend the cave? I'm so excited for the Tek cave”


The Tek Cave is a super-challenging end-game cave prior to the final sequence-boss. Oh damn, spoilers! :-P 

Survivor, HilmZech asks, “I was wondering if we could have something to store our dinos in probably digital format. they will require expensive things to maintain probably, and maybe a build limit? a person/tribe cannot build more than 3 of these, and if the device is destroyed the dinos are gone too”


Tek Tier!

Survivor, ImpureFrost asks, “With the Lycanthropy and Vampirism being a halloween disease, Will we eventually see more Holiday themed diseases?“


You’ll definitely see Lycanthrophy and Vampirism next year, and hopefully we’ll do more Holiday-themed crazyness as we get our feet on the ground with how to keep the console versions in sync throughout limited-time events!

Survivor, ImpureFrost also asks, “The Arthropleura was given a turret mode AI attack, will we see more types of Dinos that have this AI?”


Yep, most/all of the projectile-tossing dinos should be getting that option.

Survivor, OnePotatoChip asks, “Smoke grenades. Would it be difficult for them to also work on animals? ie. a properly timed smoke grenade to a Giga's face could offer a few precious seconds needed to escape or confuse a pack of Raptors that're hounding you. Also, any chance for cherry grenades for distraction purposes? More ways to interact with AI in general other than 'kill' or 'go around' would be nice. “


That’d be cool, and yes I think we can make that happen soon.

Survivor, DomiDarko asks, “With tek tier upcoming will there be anything we have a better/clear underwater vision?”


Tek Helmet.

Survivor, Codebreaker asks, “Would you consider, adding a personally owned, personally snap, admin demolish - governance setting. Same with dinos as well. This way if a tribe member up and leaves it can be demolished by an admin without having to wait out the timer. Also protects the tribe against a bad/troll recruits”


I’d love to, but sadly when someone leaves your Tribe with the personally-owned Structure system, we don’t retain information about the previous Tribe they were in, so we’d have no way to know who the previous Admins were to be able to have rights to instantly destroy such newly-independent Structures… it would be a significant overhead to store such additional information even after you’ve left a Tribe, so it isn’t going to be in the near-term plans.

Survivor, Codebreaker also asks, “Could you add Chitin to the Feeding Trough to feed the Archies”


Yes, we’ll do so in v253!

Survivor, Valentine asks, “Can we also have improvements to the players ability to fight? Like sprinting, dodge rolling, blocking, heavy attacks, charging attacks and other such things as well as better animations and character customization? =D I feel like the dinosaurs and new maps have really overshadowed the survivor part of the game!”


To begin with, hair customization is coming ;-) We do plan to do a further animation-mechanics pass as well prior to launch.

Survivor, ShiningAmaterasu asks, “Will the ankylo have something like a cripple effect when he its large creatures with its tail maybe not permanent but if an ankylo hits for example a rex it could move slower for a short period of time i dont know maybe 60 seconds or less?”


Yeah some Dino’s getting a leg-break feature like that during the TLC pass (which will, interestingly, only work against larger dinos) ;)

Survivor, Driska asks, “Will it be possible to fish on the pelagornis?”



Hmmmm I love that idea. Sittin’ on my bird, fishin’-all-day... I will make it happen!

Survivor, JonSwagSnow asks, “Do you plan on adding a Titanosaur trophy head so we can display it as a notorious hunter?”

That’s a good read, thanks for the thoughts. Various of those are already on the todo list. It would be spoiling to tell you all of the ones though! Ok, as a quick preview, here are two (among the others we will be doing): Plasma Short Sword and the Lance, for example! 

Survivor, GuiterRocker1 asks, “With the addition of the megalosaurus sleep mechanic will we see sleep functions for any other dinos? Maybe a nap feature that could heal dinos faster with a "groggy" feature after that is similar to the "hangover" feature when you consume a beer jar? Would be awesome for herbivores as an alternative to the tasty cakes since they take so long to heal up.”


Herbis are getting a buff: explosion and flame resistance, along with much better veggie cakes. Will consider adding a general sleep cycle, at the very least we’re doing further experimentation with such a mechanic on the Troodon!

Primal Survival Questions:

We’re running through them with that project’s development team (Instinct Games) and will have an info drop on it next week!

There were 3 potential categories for survivors to enter their shots into and they were the following:

Three Categories

Super Resolution: These should be taken at 8x Super Resolution. Players can optionally use Depth of Field effects accessible in Spectator mode by pressing the [Delete] key.

Panoramic 360 Stereoscopic 3D: These should be taken at 4x Super Resolution,  in 360 Stereoscopic 3D mode. We will crop them to 2D for web display, while also providing the 3D version for viewing within VR display.

Freeform: Any settings, whacky and creative use of Ansel filters are encouraged. Adding humorous titles/captions in Photoshop is also acceptable for this category!

I wish I could do more Land Before Time photos since they are quite fun and have some interactive involvement but I used up the whole cast now :< It was so hard getting the babies in position and a mess up meant resizing and trying all over lol (the oviraptor seems extremely small for what it should be assuming Land Before Time had the sizes reasonably correct as that was an adult sized ovi already). Time to think up something else creative hmmmm. Definitely getting harder the more screenshots that go in to avoid identical or similar duplicates.

@Jat - The copy/paste turkey trial comment above arkitect may be a bit outdated haha

Also, do awards stack in terms of  Winner + Runner up entries withiin a single category? Or is it the higher value of the two? I know they don't stack as say 2 runner up within a single category.

That is what I figured, thanks! I will make sure to forward that info if anyone else ever asks.

They were really fun compared to just taking a scenic image (and very challenging to set up for what looks like a simple screenshot)! I want to try to do more with them but worried about it being stale now and the initial excitement from seeing them gone :< Was very exciting to come up with and share such a creative idea though. I think we need a Land Before Time map or tribute in Ark, any Dino enthusiasts growing up in the 90's have to hold that series in their heart somewhere.

Think this Christmas season calls for a Land Before Time marathon if I can find them online hehe.

Might be building soon again after exams if I can get some ideas since I'll have so much spare time if work search doesn't yield immediate results :3

I thought you were creating an immersive world with a living and breathing ecosystem. Carnivores always being in "consume everything" mode isn't very immersive :/ 
A Rex passing by a herd of Brontos, deciding it isn't hungry enough to engage or the Brontos all making warning cries to ward him off and it therefore ending in no one fighting in the end would've been so amazing and it was something I was looking forward to. At the very least, carnivores not attacking everything due to their hunger not being low :( 

Oh well, much else to look forward. Here's to hoping you aren't skipping herds and their behaviors entirely, like going for water together(no hunger = no thirst either? FeelsBadMan) or moving to better, more fresh fields for grassing. I guess those are also out of the picture :(

Hey devs first off thanks for the great game...can we please make titanoboa taming a relatively high priority? They've been wanted and anticipated for over a year now since the original Fear Evolved...their saddle can involve the survivor laying down on it, and the snake model be scaled up slightly...this would be an amazing and relatively useful tame that I know both myself and other players would love...thank you!

I'm quite disappointed despite of the fact you want to have immersive game, you don't feel like to add such simple thing like hunger for dinosaurs, so they wouldn't be running around and chase prey even though they're full. 

If you don't want to add such small thing, I don't have any exctitment for TLC and AI pass for dinosaurs in  the future, because the case of denined hunger mechanic shows you don't care to make dinosaurs something more than cars with dino skins.

True, but at least the constantly hungry carnivores help with spawns. I at least hope they'll stick to their word about territories, herds and migrations actually being things.

I hate to be "that guy" and honestly appreciate everything the ark devs have done, but since they are going with 1 ark digest a month, I really wish they would add a couple more questions into it. Honestly, I've seen so many good questions go unanswered so that some of the dumb questions could be addressed in one or two words over and over. The ark digest is a wonderful idea I feel because it gives the devs a chance to interact with the fan base and answer some of the questions that everyone has but lately it has seemed a little lackluster. Again, don't get me wrong, I very much enjoy everything the devs have done with this game and can understand some secrecy with the games release coming. I just wish they would put a little more into it as well. That being said, whether they do or not, I have enjoyed countless hours on this game and look forward to many more.

You guys confirmed "Advanced Dinosaur AI", such as Dino senses, Weaponize fire making dinosaurs scared of it and Respect System! But not a simple Carnivore Hunger System or even a Herbivore Hunger System!? C'mon that is really disappointing guys! And having to download a mod just to get that feature is ridiculous! And you even said how easy it was to add that feature, why not do it?! But anyways I'm getting ARK for PS4 so if you guys could make a Hunger System DLC so we could get it in the game that would be nice... :Jerbcry:

I have some recommendations for how the legacy creature models could be upgraded to fit the game well. I got two statements for you: Make them more menecing, and make them more like the dossier depicts them. I mean, look at the Tyrannosaurus for crying out loud! It's not scary and it doesn't look like the dossier, it's cartoony! If I was out in the jungle, and I saw the current rex model charging at me, I'd be lauging my butt off! It can't even walk right! xD

But if I saw this thing charging at me... 


Rest assured, I would soil myself. The old carnivore models aren't scary at all, they're bland compared to the new amazing models we get, like the Megalosaurus. The moral is, old creatures like the Procoptodon, Rex, Raptor, Pachy, Galli, Bronto, and even the Quetzal need remodeing. It's for the greater good. ;)

Now to the question: Do you guys have an ETA on when the legacy models will be changed, and what creatures will you be remodeling?

You guys at Wildcard have been doing an amazing job at this game, and no matter what people say bad about it, it's amazing to me.

Oh, one more question: Will rag dolls for larger creatures be fixed? It's like their bones turn into mush and they just fall and twist and turn in ways they weren't able to do seconds before it died. I know this sounds like it defeats the purpose of rag doll physics, but I feel that depending on creature size, the rag dolls should become more stiff and heavy. This would be a more realistic approach to dying bodies.
