  • Introducing the Purlovia and Upcoming Biome Changes!

    large.Dossier_Purlovia.jpg

    Common Name: Purlovia
    Species: Purlovia Maxima
    Time: Late Permian
    Diet: Carnivore
    Temperament: Patient

    Wild

Purlovia Maxima perfectly embodies the element of surprise. Though Nanictidopids such as Purlovia were once thought to be herbivores, I discovered that this creature is, in fact, a patient hunter of the most clever sort.

After burrowing beneath the jungle floor, Purlovia enters a state of hibernation, and can go extended periods without any food. When some unfortunate creature eventually wanders by, Purlovia dramatically bursts forth from the ground, tearing into its prey with its large canines before the victim can react.

    Domesticated

Though Purlovia is ill-suited to the life of a mount, its usefulness in staging an ambush or as a village guardian cannot be understated. With a tamed pack of Purlovia, one could assemble a literal minefield of deadly claws and teeth.

However, any ambushes using Purlovia must be planned well in advance, as it will refuse to hibernate if it senses any threat nearby.

    Upcoming Biome Changes!

In the last Community Crunch we posted some upcoming changes to the Biomes. That map was a little confusing as it included the new sizes of all the biomes, as opposed to the changes itself - and following that, we've gone ahead and made some further changes to what that turned out to be. Here are the new biome changes:

    Key:

Blue area == Changes occurring in this area are to highlight the new Snow Biome. The previous biome will receive a touch-up / some alterations and adjustments which may effect your base. So there are some slight landscape/terrain changes made throughout the biome.

Orange area == This is the new Redwood biome. It will be replacing the previous existing
Jungle/Mountain area that was here before.

Green area == This is the swamp biome that will turn into Redwood.

The Old Snow Biome has received some changes, the extent of which is difficulty to quantify, it is closer to a touch-up as opposed to a re-do. There is a chance this could effect bases in that location, which is why we wanted to include it on the map to give you guys the option as to whether to relocate or not, however it is also likely that they are not significant enough to cause you any disruption.

The other highlighted areas, are areas of change. The swamp isn't being made into a tiny small piece, it is still rather large - it's just a far majority of it will be unaffected by this map change, which is why it is not highlighted on the map - however the areas that are highlighted, will change.

We try to avoid making drastic map changes as we know it can be unsettling for players to have to be concerned about relocating their base, however sometimes we have to go ahead and make those changes for the development of the game. We apologize if this does cause any inconvenience and we really hope you enjoy the upcoming biome changes :)

Don't worry if it's a little confusing! We'll be updating the in-game environment with 3D markers indicating areas that will be undergoing a change!

Here's a little sneak-preview of what's to come, and we'll be showing off some more later on as we get closer to release :)

    Thanks guys!

It doesn't take too long to make a bed though.

True, but I always play hardcore, so i'm basically forced to spawn at normal spawns. All im saying is that newer or migrating players might have a hard time starting out if they keep getting 'ark'd' by living minefields all the time lol

Does that mean the Hidden Lake isn't going to be covered in snow now or..?

Hidden Lake will NOT be covered in snow. Only the areas highlighted in blue will be part of the snow biome/receive changes if already part of the current snow biome. Hidden Lake will be staying as is.

Am I the only one who is sad that Hidden Lake is NOT going to become part of the Snow Biome now?

I don't know if you are the only one, but I will suggest that you are in the minority since many players including myself, many players around me,  and in every map I have Ibeen logged into has had substantial number of bases in the Hidden lake and surrounding area. It would destroy a very high density player base population on the original map. For all of us who built in this area, we are relieved and grateful the developers have chosen to leave this area of the map disturbed.

General comments re: extended snow biome

The snow biome is less populated than any other area of the map since a full set of fur gear is insufficient to stave off the cold -- freezing (especially at night) and a significant loss of health can only be averted by (1) air-conditioners (generally used at base only), (2) three+ fires (useful at tames but not possible in the air for most birds (quet platform?), (3) higher quality BPs from rare drops Christmas or deep water are difficult to acquire (need some pieces + pricey to make) (4) Eat like a pig. Sometimes during the day or less than bitter cold its possible just to eat like a pig to restore health from freezing (wont work when its super cold hard to counter rapid health loss) (5)  fria curry (uses narcs lasts only 15 min) when in the air.  Given the expansion of the snow biome it would be useful to encourage players to set up a base and play there to offer a fria curry that lasts 30 min and spoils slower because I have a snow base and we go through fria quickly when we tame a high level dino and must search for extended periods. Just a thought.

In summary, players with our main base located in the hidden lake and surrounding area are grateful it will remain undisturbed. There will be a rather large percentage of the map dedicated to the snow biome. We hope the extended biome will be cold and snowy but not have terrain changes and rocks to destroy bases. Using the Christmas map -- cold, snow but no changes to the terrain would be idea -- the fewer alterations the better. Better tools to live in the cold are welcome. More frequent drops for rare advanced snow gear BPs or more powerful curry or anything else could encourage more players to live in the snow biome are improvements.

At the moment, snow biome is a nice place to visit (great resources and unique dinos), but I wouldn't want to live there (too cold, and not enough flat ground without rocks to build a main base along the shore).

Are the Icebergs going to be affected by the updates? My group has our main bases on every iceberg on two different servers :/  Its hard to tell since they are not on the map being used to show changes.
