  • Community Crunch 518: Long Live the King!

    image.png

The ground is beginning to shake again.

Once upon a time, the Giganotosaurus was the undisputed king of the ARKs. Few creatures could stand against it, and hearing its roar in the distance was enough to send even seasoned Survivors scrambling for safety, and taming one was a milestone few ever forgot.

As the years went by and new apex predators emerged, the Giga gradually found itself sharing the spotlight. With this TLC, our goal is to restore the presence, power, and identity that made it the terror of the wilderness in the first place.

We're excited to share an early look at that journey with the first concept art for the Giganotosaurus TLC. Our focus is on restoring the Giga's commanding presence and ensuring it once again stands shoulder to shoulder with the mightiest predators roaming the ARKs.

As part of that journey, we’re exploring new ways to remind Survivors why a wounded Giganotosaurus has always been one of the most terrifying sights on the ARKs. The closer it is pushed to the brink, the more dangerous it becomes... and that kind of fury can be contagious. Creatures brave enough to crowd around its feet may soon discover it has a crushing answer of its own, but when its temper finally boils over, friend and foe alike would be wise to give it room.

The king of the food chain is preparing for its return.

Its design and stomp attack are a solid 100/10, but the Giga should have always been what Garuga's current Acro is—in terms of abilities, stats, and form (though the size is a bit excessive). Instead, it’s a mini-boss with exaggerated health, damage, and size that crowns itself the "King of the ARKs"—though even that title is contested, with the Carcha hot on its heels—and there are perhaps only two of them on the map. The Giga needs to be, without a doubt, an endgame creature defined by a unique set of abilities rather than just its size (which is boring).

Here’s how I’d design it: the Giga, Carcha, Concavenator, and Allo are all related (Allosaurids > Carcharodontosaurids > Giganotosaurini) and share certain traits: they are slender and lightweight for their size and specialize in hunting sauropods by inflicting massive bleed damage. They feature tall neural spines along their backs—forming humps or sails like the Spino’s (though I’d design these to act as defensive spikes, like a hedgehog's—to block some damage against larger creatures). In-game, they each enter a "rage"  state that buffs their movement speed, attack speed, stamina and health recovery, and slightly reduces damage taken while increasing damage dealt (and to a lesser extent, their allies) and enables those bleed attacks; however, they can lose control and turn against you. You can manage this by using tranq darts, arrows or anything to raise their torpor and calm them down, or by using Rare Flowers, Ammonite Bile, or Stimulants to trigger the rage. The Giga should be taller than the Rex—closer to a Reaper's size—and have slightly more health. Since the Giga is the ultimate "giant-slayer," it enters a rage state the longer it interacts with creatures larger than itself (Spino, Rex, bosses, and Titans, etc). In this mode, it inflicts bleed damage. Before losing control, it allows for a unique attack—a flurry of rapid bites causing massive bleed that drains 20% of the target's health over 120 seconds. Like Garuga's Acro, it has a stomp attack, but this one is much slower and more powerful; it deals massive Area of Effect (AoE) damage, stuns nearby enemies for 2 seconds, and has a minimum 45-second cooldown. Finally, as a passive ability, it can detect larger creatures nearby, even through walls.

Now, regarding the Carcha: it coexisted (and fought) with the Spino, so its size and stats shouldn't be too different. The Carcha lives up to its name—we’ve turned it into a bloodthirsty land shark—so it enters a frenzy the more damage it deals; this effect is boosted by its Water stat, making it a highly offensive dino. Instead of a tail swipe, it lunges like a shark attacking a seal, grabbing a small or medium-sized creature and shaking it violently; to break free, you have to attack its eyes. Against large creatures, it inflicts a "wounded" status effect for 10 seconds—provided the target survives, of course.

As for the Acro, it’s slightly smaller than the Carcha and would function similarly, though instead of adrenaline, it enters a rage based on damage received. In its "shield" stance, it crouches and uses its hump—whether made of fat or muscle—to tank hits; this ability is enhanced by its Food stat. It retains its shoulder-shove attack, but instead of a stomp, it uses its claws to slash, given that its arms are larger and fully functional.

Since the *Fasolasuchus* already possesses the abilities associated with Garuga's *Concavenator*, what kind of skills would this *Acro*—scaled down to the size of a *Utahraptor*—have? Well, the *Concavenator* is a Spanish dinosaur, and Spain is home to an iconic yet controversial activity: bullfighting. So, the *Conca* would act like a pint-sized matador, using the sail on its tail like a *capote* (cape) to goad opponents. It could execute parries or perform a *Pizza Tower*-style taunt, using its claws and teeth to deliver *estoque*-like thrusts and bleed out its victim—playing out a mini-game that mirrors the *tercio de varas*, *tercio de banderillas*, and *tercio de muerte*. Naturally, it would fly into a rage when you and your allies toss roses (rare flowers) and use emotes to praise it after a successful parry. Of course, being so small means it can't take many hits, but the ability of such a compact creature to hold its own against—and eliminate—medium-to-large threats with a bit of patience is spectacular; it would easily rank as the best or second-best dino in this group.

As for the *Allosaurus*, giving it traits from the recent *Allosaurus anax* would mean removing the pack buff (and perhaps giving that to *Mapusaurus*, if it gets added) and positioning it to take the *Rex*'s place in the meta. It would get an "axe attack" as a secondary move to inflict bleeding; and, since it’s the most primitive of the group, it would fly into a rage if its jaw gets broken (wink)—triggered either by overusing the axe attack or by taking heavy damage to the jaw (like getting hit by a tail swipe—wink, wink). In this state, it would use its claws to deliver ferocious, violent slashes, as it has the longest and most functional arms of the bunch. But if you absolutely insist on having a monstrous relative of the *Giga*, the answer is *Tyrannotitan*: by using Element—much like a *Ferox*—it would transform from an ordinary carcharodontosaurid into the "Demon King" of the ARKs that everyone loves so much. Just drop it into *Extinction* alongside the *Dreadnoughtus*, and voilà.

But they already have the reference from the Evo Giga from Paleo Ark, that’s why it wasn’t that difficult to make a Giga TLC.

omg the GIGA!!!!!! great job on that cant wait to see what yall do with it. I would love to see a different taming mechanic similar to the paleo one. seems to me a king of the ark should not be a mere knockout tame.

also i would love to see a primitive dlc kinda bringing back the primitive plus mode from ase. thank you for always working to give us a great game to love and enjoy.

Makes me wonder if the taming method will change. Kind of hope not, or at least not by much, since we already have more than enough gimmick tames in the game, many of which border on infuriating😅

i hope it changes to the evo giga method, its not complicated but it feels worthy of the giga aka the king of the ark.

What a beautiful concept! I love how there is a hint of stomp attack in the description.

One request though. For the love of holy raptor please keep It a KO tame! I absolutely hate all these pain in the ass/unreliable/buggy taming methods added recently.

And one final thought. How about giving player an ability to control rage level? Lowering rage meter by roaring? Roaring should have a small CD, so player won't be able to spam It and be 100% safe. If a giga rages - Its on the player for not watching the rage levels. Make rage meter look like acro's adrenaline bar, so It very well visible and easy to manage.

the king of ark should not b a mere ko

They should make the base game free to bring new players as they will always make money from the dlc.

I know people say it will bring more hackers but im 1x console so it doesnt effect us as much and also they should just improve the game security so hackers cant hack.

Or maybe just make the base game free for console.

Also they should update club ark occasionally and with survival of the fittest they should make some of the rewards club ark points.

If they made survival of the fittest f2p like fortnite but people could see their rewards banking with club ark points, they would probably download ark survival.

I'm glad the Giga is getting a TLC but I wish they would have just used the Paleo Ark version. I hope it at least has it's abilities.

Crossplay means your console shares servers with PC, so you will encounter the same level of hacking.
The game had been free on PS5 a while ago so players could try it. Personaly I had about 20 hours in it: 15 trying to update a few basic mods after every nearly daily patch, 5 trying to find a spot on overpopulated servers while resetting the basic commands for acceptable performance. Uninstalled and back to ASE.
Tl,dr; They won't sell a lot of dlc if people can't hardly acces the basegame, certainly not if dlc is overpriced as it is now.
