  • Community Crunch 447: Community Creature Winner, LiveOps Update and more

    welcome_crunch2023-1.png

Survival takes a sharp turn this week as the community-voted winner sinks its claws into the spotlight! With its lightning speed and razor-sharp instincts, this prehistoric predator is set to shake up the ARK in ways we can’t wait to dive into! Meanwhile, on the LiveOps front, we’ve been kept on our toes. We’ll break it all down, along with the steps we’re taking to keep things running as smoothly as possible.

With over 32k votes, Megaraptor will be the new creature added to Valguero for ARK: Survival Ascended. We are looking forward to sharing its concept and dossier in the weeks to come!

If you are interested in seeing exactly how the voting went, check it out here.

    * Note that we'll be reading through these threads and using them as inspiration for how the creature will be designed; aspects suggested may change.

Our hosting providers are facing a severe, ongoing DDoS attack, which has caused recent outages, including those over the past 48 hours. We're actively working with our partners to mitigate the issue, but as with these types of attacks, we don’t yet have an estimated resolution.

While our partners work on it, we've taken steps to protect player progress:

    • Increased the upload timer to 72 hours (and we’ll extend it further if needed).
    • Temporarily disabled decay timers to prevent loss of player progress.
    • Taken certain regions offline to protect player data when necessary.
    • Extending the time on Expire Servers to give everyone a chance to retrieve their characters and items. Once things are more stable, we’ll announce a date—don’t worry, you’ll get plenty of notice.

We're closely monitoring mitigation efforts with our partners, but please keep in mind that the situation may continue to evolve.

We’ll be holding on running an EVO event this week in light of the instability–we’ll look to do something nice for players in that regard when this is all resolved.

Thanks for your patience and support while we work through this!

I wonder how many voted for the creature abilities and not the design? What a great wakeup call it would be if he was a normal KO tame and carbon copy of the raptor.

The Rex of Ark is 22 meters long compared to its 12 meter long accurate counterpart? Spino is 24 meters compared to its 15 meter counterpart, even Carno is like 13 meters to its 7 meters irl and Bronto is the size of Ramarak from Kong Skull Island. Every creature is oversized to a degree whether Giga sized or just double its normal size. So it really doesn’t matter about oversizing a creature if everything else is too. So that shouldn’t matter. But I understand your point as I was one who did the same.

Yes...but it will be 1/3 - 1/2 or double... not a thousand times as much damn they are insects not kaiju!

It won't, we hadn't had a knockout tame in years. everything HAS to be some annoying gimmick to turn the casuals away from taming it legit. Though I do hope it does end up being a generic knockout tame with no remarkable skills, THAT would be the greatest "I told you so" moment in ARK history.

...The raptor won? Really? Out of everything there the raptor won? What's it gonna do, have another bleed attack? Another rage mechanic? Some "special" roar? I'd say maybe a pounce but the regular raptors had that for a short bit and then they removed it. Who's this one gonna be a replacement for with the original not getting any kind of compensation tlc, Carno? Raptor? Allosaurus?

Areneo disagrees with you. Considering it’s based on the smallest of the families of Arachnid spiders which one of the largest only gets to 15 centimeters or so.

Your original point wasn’t even about insects but rather that all oversized beasts in general are something you dislike. What I am trying to say is that from the very beginning of Ark’s existence, the dinosaurs and creatures were never scaled to their real life counterparts. I can immediately make this case with the Wholly Mammoth and Rhinoceros and Paraceratherium being anywhere from double, triple or quadruple their sizes.

Ark’s Lore covers for why they are so large no matter if they’re Kaiju sized. Because they have been genetically modified from the get go to be suited for human use. I mean Dreadnoughtus/Titanosaur do drive the point further as well. I do get your understanding though clearly. I would much prefer to stay away from the bugs/crustaceans in general. But they’re a few that gave me insensitive to vote higher than the lower half of my top ten. But personally would just rather see the more reptilian, avian, amphibian, and mammalian creatures than the invertebrates unless they’re already oversized in the real world. I’m just playing devil’s advocate here because they deserve just as much right to win and be submitted as the dinosaurs who are only a few times their normal size.

Hold separate voting rounds for species first, and abilities second, was suggested a year and a half ago when the first Community Votes started, and sadly the suggestion fell on death ears because WildCard doesn't care about the quality of the winner AND doesn't read our comments anyway.

On the other hand, I think saying "no artworks" at all is very hard.
Oftentimes it's useful to visualize what a creature does (just look at how easy it is to picture what the Acinonyx or the Coelophysis do thanks to their graphics :

    image.png.38f0ff3d7255afb887e6fba91bfc555c.png

Plus, many times, the appearance of the creature dictates its abilities (and imho that's usually the best ones).

An example I love to quote is the Armadillosuchus (also a Shockal submission, by the way, but the submission seems to be hidden). The reason why the Armadillosuchus works so well is that its shape very much says "wrecking ball" ! The creature is big, round, heavy, and IT SHOWS IN ITS ACTIONS.

    FEK85DgXIAg8rMd.jpg.dddfed1a3ff6b77bf042dfbd5c7fec3f.jpg

Boy did I like that creature. It was just so cool and made me take notice of Shockal's suggestions. I'm sad the rest of the illustrations were lost in time ; I had only tweeted about that one so I have no trace of the rest. But you can picture what I mean.

The solution, imho, could still be to vote an additional round :

    First round :
    species
People would submit a creature. They can add pictures (either from an image search, or commissioned art, or their own creation), or simply link to an external description (Wikipedia, paleo works, etc.). It's also a good time to provide a size comparison (especially if you think that your creature should be a different size than its Earth version), or maybe also insist on stats ("this creature probably doesn't have a lot of weight given its size", "as a flyer, it probably needs a lot of stamina").
This would particularly benefit from a gallery view.

This gives a rough idea of the species and how it fits into ARK. If people want to shun big carnivores and specifically theropods, that's the time to submit everything else.

    Second round : abilities
Submissions are closed. The creatures that placed in the Top20 or Top30 (or even Top50, depending on how large we want to be) of the first round get to continue the voting process. THESE CREATURES ARE SHOWCASED IN A COMMUNITY CRUNCH, yes, all of them, with nice little thumbnails, so that everyone can see at first glance who remains in competition and what it looks like. Promote the damn thing to voters before a minority gets to decide.

If your creature reaches this round, then and only then, you can now describe its abilities. Other people, of course, can also add suggestions to your post in the comments, as they always have. If your creature didn't move to this round, you can suggest the abilities you had in mind for a creature of a similar species ("I love your Ceratopsian, congrats on going to the second round ! I was planning for my Ceratopsian to have these abilities, see if there's one you like, I think they'd fit").

This narrows down things and at least now we're all on the same page about what the creature looks like ; but you still get to have many options (for instance if two sauropods get to the second round, then they can have wildly different abilities).

    Third round : finalists
The Top10 of the previous round gets to actually be ranked. Proceed as usual, imperfect as this may be.

    Winner announced
Hopefully people are happier with it because we have collectively had control over what exactly we were looking for.

On top of that, I think it could be very nice to actually follow the process of developping the creature. WildCard could stuff up their Community Crunches by letting us see it taking shape. One week we have the first draft of the concept art ; we give our first impressions before it's finalized, and the result is shown a while later. Then maybe have a livestream on that poor Twitch channel that's barely used outside of Extra Life, and have the 3D artist(s) showcase a bit of how they work. Then show the result. Then the animation work. Then let's be crazy, have a dev implement at least one ability in a stream. In a later Community Crunch, hold a vote on the type of saddle or let us pick between two sounds. There's no reason for a Community Voted creature to be a secret. Buy some easy goodwill.

It's NEVER gonna happen, but I think it would be a much better process.

This, this is perfect!!!! It would take much longer, but designs would be given a chance from the start!!!!

    Hi,

Not sure if someone already suggested this, but why not have both creatures added to ark (megaraptor and the cheetah) as they are both popular. Maybe change the creature vote to allow the top 2 to be added to ark or something like that? (wish the cheetah won though).

Hopefully next time creature submission makers will say "suggested abilities" instead of what it can do. There's no way the megaraptor will have all those abilities, and if the abilities are why you voted for it, then you learned nothing from previous creature votes. Hell, not even names are definite, look at the Yi Ling, it was the Yi Qi during creature votes.

Congrats to the maker for it winning, but i can't wait to see all the pvp players who voted for it going off over it not having most of those abilities on release. Good luck devs in the discord dealing with that

Don't use ark lore against me boy/girl!! I know all the ark lore... but I still think that creating one of the most efficient predators in nature and giving it the size of a bus can't be called "help for survivors". Ok now enough with this delusional speech we know that in the end whoever created the ark was not right with their head, mine is a matter of taste.

Well another entirely disappointing vote conclusion later and we ended up with another boring theropod build carnivore. I'm sure it will absolutely be relevant and not at all overshadowed by everything already in the game and the upcoming Acro from Garuga.

EDIT: Also, this thing will NEVER be able to do all the things that were suggested so I hope you enjoy the watered down boring version that we get.

Yep, this sums it up pretty much. kids think they are voting for the abilities and then go full on Pikachu face meme when the tame they voted for isn't anything like what they voted for. Hell it happened with the Deinopithecus.

First of all, I’m a dude.

Second of all, I mean yeah, but you gotta understand they were trying to make sure we could handle whatever an alien world could throw at us from the Genesis Ship Simulation since that’s where the dinosaurs were first used.

    Third of all, Fair.
