  • Community Crunch 356: ARK Roadmap Update, Rhyniognatha Concept, and More!

    welcome_crunch2023-1.png

We appreciate your patience as we digested the feedback and consulted with our partners to revise our upcoming plans. As always, we’re very grateful to have such a passionate player base, and we hear and understand your concerns. We've decided to make some changes and provide additional information as to why we’re taking this approach, so please bear with us as we address some points.

    Price Point and Bundle

First things first, we are scrapping the ARK Respawned Bundle. Our intention behind this was to provide a package where you essentially got two products for the price of one. In hindsight, not the best move. Our bad; we recognize how combining ARK Survival Ascended with ARK 2 and requiring further DLC upgrades wasn’t optimal, especially since you wouldn’t be able to judge ARK 2 as no gameplay or content would be available yet.

    Here are our new plans:

ARK: Survival Ascended will now be a standalone package released on every platform (PC Windows/Steam, Xbox Series S/X, and PlayStation 5) at $59.99. The package will include the following pieces of content built-in (not sold separately), with each remastered and altered for the next-generation:

    • The Island (Released at Launch)
    • Survival of the Fittest: The Island & Scorched Earth map variants (Released at Launch)
    • Scorched Earth (Released at Launch)
    • Aberration (Released by Q4 2023)
    • Extinction (Released by Q1 2024)
    • Genesis Part 1 (Released by Q1 2024)
    • Genesis Part 2 (Released by Q2 2024)
    • All the community-created maps are also to be released over time in 2024 (Fjordur, Ragnarok, The Center, Lost Island, Valguero, Crystal Isles)

No longer a backward-compatible free update?

Initially, when we had first considered doing an Unreal 5 upgrade, we planned just to port the Switch version of the game and undo the ‘graphical’ limitations required for that hardware. We weren’t going to maximize the potential of the new technology, we weren’t going to introduce new gameplay changes, and we weren’t going to make critical design changes that would have had an impact on existing save data.

After carefully considering what would be the best outcome for those who enjoy ARK: Survival Evolved and would want to continue to enjoy it in the years to come, we decided that our initial plan would not be sufficient. We want to provide you with an evergreen classic ARK experience, one that can continue to grow over time on a cleaned-up code base, making use of the new technological advancements not only in the industry but also in what we are working on with ARK 2.

We weren’t trying to mislead you with earlier comments; our plans and overall intentions changed. So you're probably asking, why don’t we make these upgrades to the original ARK: Survival Evolved (ASE)? Frankly, it would not be viable. Many of the changes we’re making in ARK: Survival Ascended will touch a lot of aspects of the game; it’ll invalidate save data, some mods may not be functional, some things may not play the same way as they did before, and we didn’t want to change that experience for those who prefer it or are unable to upgrade.

This also impacted our decision to sunset the ASE Official Network offline on August 31st, shortly before the ASA launch. Despite ASE Officials representing the minority of players on ARK, it’s an invested and passionate group with attachments to their bases, tames, and characters, and seeing that go away can’t be easy. While we know it’s not the same, we hope making the saves available for unofficial use helps diminish the loss. Our reasoning behind the decision is that those servers are essentially based on old technology and require significant development resources and time for our teams to operate & maintain. In some cases, the issues aren’t as easily solvable without an overall upgrade. Additionally, we know that those resources could be better utilized on fundamentally new technology to further enhance the overall game experience for all players.

ASE will still be available to play for those who choose to; that includes multiplayer through unofficial/player-hosted sessions, the endless amount of mods on the Steam workshop, and all the game content as you currently know it. All of that is going to remain, but after 8 years of development, we have to make the difficult decision of sunsetting ASE and the Official Network in order to provide that truly long-term and evergreen version of the game through ARK: Survival Ascended.

We’ll be sending off ASE with one final content update for our 8th anniversary this June, releasing the fan-elected creature: Rhyniognatha! (Keep an eye out next week for its Dossier)

    Ark_CommunityCrunch07_RhyniognathaConcept_1920x1080.jpg

We plan to support ARK: Survival Ascended with new features (including at launch), content drops, creatures, items, structures, and DLC. Our roadmap covered some of those planned changes, and we said there would be more, and here’s another preview:

    • Dynamic navigation mesh and creature pathfinding overhaul (AI pathfinding)
    • Photo Mode
    • Nvidia DLSS
    • Dino/Baby Management QOL
    • Wild Babies
    • Snap point improvements (new snaps, logic improvements)
    • Character creation & customization improvements
    • Cross-platform Multiplayer & Full Blueprint Modding (I know we mentioned this before, but we’re serious, it’s happening on PC and Consoles at launch, and we’ve got it working internally with Overwolf technology – this dramatically changes the nature of the console experience).

And this list is not exhaustive. We’re hoping to get even more done, and the only reason we aren’t covering all of those details right now is that we’re still working on them. It’s taking a significant amount of resources and time at the studio, and we don’t want to commit to other particular features unless we’re sure we can get them in for launch. And yeah, we may miss our deadline on certain aspects, but they’ll come in over time as we continue to support this next generation of ARK.

At the end of the day, these are just words and, frankly, may not mean so much. That’s okay; we understand what will really convince you is seeing screenshots and a gameplay trailer, and you will in time. We know there are going to be more questions, and we’ll be sharing more details over time. We’re not quite ready to pull back the curtains just yet, so we hope you’ll hang in there with us, Survivors. It’ll be worth the wait!

so still crashing the official servers but charging 60 for all the maps... ok fine and dandy but then ARK 2 will have to cost less than 30 otherwise the players who would want both are paying out more than before... seem worse than before

I'm seeing this is as such:

"OH you want to complain? Well we are doing it anyway and now we are gonna charge you $20 more for just the one game (asa) and you can spend more later on ark 2."

Sounds like you heard us. But you weren't listening.

Still not ammused about the cost but a lot less annoyyed with it now that they are bundled. Also, if a lot of bugs from Ark 1 is fixed I may even get the new version if enough is added that makes it worthwile, not just mostly visual changes, though don't get your hopes up, I'm still hella salty with yall.

Edit. Also not ammused at the timeline, 2 years before I can play the maps I like but while annoying I can deal with that a lot more then some other things.

For when and if we get an aberration creature vote, they better let us have some creativeness. There's nothing on the map that is remotely normal.

So now you want us to pay for both games instead of 90$ for all of it you'll do what? Charge 60+ dollars for Ark 2 and 60 for Ark 1 to the tune of an extra 30? It should have been 50 or 60 dollars at max for the remake and Ark 2. Sell ark 2 for 50 or 60 and all of Ark 1 remake came with it.

So, things still suck, basically. Officials are still closing, And I'm still leaving ARK once that happens. At least I'll have plenty of space freed after that for other games.

    Many Different Points.

My Personal Point is, i dont want all that work again. The Bossfights was Horrorable for me, i want Taming, Breeding and Farming.

I have two Chars lvl 195 and 185 with all Engrams and over 16100 Hours Ark.

Give me an Option to Tranfer my Chars with an Full Inventory of Blueprints, Cryopods and Stuff and i am Happy.

If the Snail want Money, he can get it from me.

This is how I’m feeling as well. I’ve dedicated way too much of my life to this game. I suppose this gives me the kick in the pants to finally give it up.

The Easter event is worthless to me now knowing everything I worked for will be gone in a couple months time so who cares?

I’m seeing a TON of tribes leaving my various servers in droves already who must feel the same way. Why keep playing when it’s going away?

This is a bigger problem then they are willing to admit and the player base will dwindle because of it.

Imagine having to only play Island and Scorched earth again and starting over under the assumption it will be so much better because its new technology.  ITS THE SAME DEVELOPERS.  How are you going to go from playing with 10 + maps back to only 2 AND restarting knowing full well that they will kill all the servers again when Ark 2 comes out.

It would have been so much better if you would just continue to refine and fix bugs on the current game than to try and re-release it when you haven't even perfected the current product.  I literally crash every single survival of the fittest game I play on console and you can blame the tech all you want but that is a bold faced excuse to not troubleshoot and solve the problems.

You guys are completely misreading the information.

    Quote

ASE Officials representing the minority of players on ARK

The reason for this is because YOUR GAME DOESN'T WORK RIGHT.  You cant even staff enough moderators to fix issues and even if you did it still doesn't feel right to have to use admin commands to correct crap glitches.  You guys need some training on User Experience Metrics and stop looking at basic player metrics as if you have a grasp on them.  Official servers were full of life when the game released but over time it created such a negative experience between DDOS attacks and lack of proper admins that people just took matters into their own hands and started unofficial servers just to even be able to play the game, and you want us to pay for a full-priced re-release of the same game after we have already dumped thousands of dollars just running the nitrado servers?  And you want us to give up all that progress and time too?

I hope everyone here has enough sense to just not buy this new game.  Wild Card you are not going to get away with this and someone is going to find a way to emulate this game now that you have shown your hand.  I can't wait until they do so I can get my saves from nitrado and host my own servers on a version of the game that some ambitious young talent have made 5x cleaner.

It is actually hilarious too because you guys claim that you will continue support for ASE for bug fixes and crash fixes only, but apparently that is going to take all of your development resources because here we are as you say 8 years later and the game still doesn't work.

I kinda wished that they'd allow us to do fantasy creatures in addition to prehistoric IRL stuff for the creature vote considering it's Scorched Earth. There would a whole bunch of cool things we could suggest!

Ditching the bundle is a good move, as selling players a game they haven't seen without the ability to refund it was a horrible idea.  Only issue now is that the change actually increases the costs for existing players who already own all DLC.

Please consider a discounted upgrade to ASA for exisiting complete content owners. If players who already own ASE+DLCs could get ASA for 30/40 bucks, and then Ark 2 for 60/70 then the overall costs would be similar to the bundle but more consumer friendly.

Ark community: complains about broken game for 8 years.

Also Ark community: complains when developer offers a fix to broken game and talks developer out of a 2for1 package on the sequel.

WC can't win for losing with some people. Was it scummy to offer an upgraded version of Ark with the option to buy dlcs again? Sure, maybe. Was it a pretty good compromise to offer that and also basically hand out free copies of Ark 2 to anyone who bought what people have been crying about for years? Absolutely. Official is closing down. Get over yourselves and enjoy the time you have left. Every game has an eventual sunset period, and it's wild to me that gamers don't already expect that when they get invested in a game like Ark on an official server. I, for one, planned on buying the ASA bundle and leaving the DLCs off. Something to bridge the gap and "retire" my progress on ASE before Ark 2 came out. Kinda disappointed that the community has talked WC out of beta access and pre-ordered copy of Ark 2.

Lmao, you don't get it: price is the last and minor issue. Getting payid for work is legit thing (if price is legit tooI). The main issues are others.

    Official shutdown

Total official shutdown is like forcing users to buy the game, despite ASE still selling good and getting new players activation daily.
This also kills owners of old gen consoles that cannot even download and keep the server saves.
You NEVER cared about server status: never a server review after 2019 with the partial shutdown of legacy. You opened always new servers even for unplayed maps. And now you are telling those resources are all needed for a game that still doesn't exists even on preorder and that will face 1-2 maps only at begin? This is a mockery.

FIX: Keep Official alive until it is played. Do a server review, do it seriously, say what server have to close for being un-played, allowing people to move giving a decent amount of time. Do this review every 6-9-12 months until really those servers are all unpopulated and you decide to shutdown ASE. And please note that a lot of official players quitted now for your previous disastrous community crunch.

    Overwolf

Overwolf is a piece of crapware slowing down system, eating resources. Paid mods will kill unofficial with players having to pay both slots and mods. Instead, mod.io initial choice was far better choice.

FIX: Toss off overwolf and go back to mod.io.

    Multiplatform

Multiplatform is just a sex toy for monkey streamers to get more viewers: it will only add tons of issues about cheating, account login issues, patch deployment issues (pc vs consoles certification process). This also put a dark shadows against unofficial and dedicated server runtimes: microsoft and sony don't like non-nda users dealing with their account and login platforms. You tried it with SOTF and didn't work (pad vs mouse&keyboard).

FIX: Toss off multiplatform. It didn’t work with SOTF (mouse vs keyboard) and brings only deployment issues. Nobody really cares nor asked about this. Or if you really wanna do it, don't put it as default choice and on official servers.

    Your behaviour toward community

You totally lack of any real sign of respect towards your community: lies, mocking, total silence hoping people will forget
Now you say you changed again idea about your economical future econmical income? All these are proofs you aren't serious on your work and intentions.
You are even able to sincerely ask sorry for those that will lose years of supporting your game. All this "we al learning" agile poop paradigm is just the iceberg peak of your total fail on this.
ARK Survival Evolved is sold as an mmo, at least on Steam. In a mmo there are 2 really important aspect a developer must consider: servers review and community respect. For 7 years you clearly totally showed you do not care about these 2 things.

FIX: Ask sorry. Really and sincerely. And stop using players as beta tester. Provide beta releases and servers for that.

I wondered  Can we take legal action?  It makes no sense to pay for something we already paid for Not counting the time we have invested. And that tomorrow they decide to throw all our effort and time into the trash

Paying for an added product we know next to nothing about with the few things that are known being largely disliked is beyond foolish. Why pad their sale numbers on a product we haven't even seen in action?

Interestingly enough, while they are now saying it will not be transferable, judging by Jeremy's earlier tweet, I'm guessing it will still be possible to transfer over files from game to game by copying-and-pasting (although only for unofficial) unless they purposely screw the game up to prevent it.

Because some of us are willing to give the sequel a shot regardless, and it comes with a fix that's been begged for for years by the entire community. Is there a downside? Sure. Is there a definite upside? Heck yeah there was.

I am still divided, it took me an incredible amount of time to build up my Rexes, resources and days trying to get saddle blueprints, for bosses that frankly aren't really fun and have absurd level of damage sponge, but still necessary for a complete and fun Tek experience. The bosses themselves are epic looking however, just wish the battles would be better/ more fun. Making a shift like this, to a reset, now that I am older and have less time available due to my obligations is rough. As I type this, I rather just play something else which is not as grindy, I need time, maybe its time for a new generation of Ark Survivors and for me to move on.

To acknowledge, considering the situation as is, this move to separate Ark 2 from the rest and offer the content in a single package makes more sense now. I want to recognize this as a positive move, I see the 10 USD increase there, but the offer, at least for potential new players, is better now and feels complete.

One thing caught my attention here, if you can pull this off it would be something to consider:

"We want to provide you with an evergreen classic ARK experience, one that can continue to grow over time on a cleaned-up code base, making use of the new technological advancements"

Emphasis on "on a cleaned-up code base". I know how much this hurts Ark today. Each feature listed is interesting as a premise, but cleaning up the code seems like something that would help Ark for sure by itself.

I will observe, as I always do. As said by the Wildcard team, I won't take words, they aren't worth much nowadays from most people, not just Wildcard, everyone, talk is cheap after all. I want to see the actions and I shall judge people on them, let's see how you deliver, make me interested.

Good luck, may you have success in this endeavour, be it with me or without.

    wildcard / snail games

you have killed ark for lots of the games, players and people that have spent 1000s and 1000s of hours on ark a lot of us are even cloaking over 10.000 hours on are and for you to keep f...... us with this unbelievable . you say one thing you do something different ( its ok we will just deal with it ) you are making news story's all over the internet from the massive f... up you have made. the long time players know snail games pull the strings and thay are just pulling the strings now. the players are not wanting much just you to deliver what you said from the start ASA as a free upgrade. we all know the big reason for the change of hart with charging us for ASA is become snail games stock price is crashing harder then a car hitting a wall but this is no reason to kill a player base where you have been in the top 20 of steam games for the past 5 years may be longer.

snail games are a company that the owner has been playing official pvp and giving his friends, tripe mates  and who ever he want stuff with admin commands. so why let them mess up ASA with with mess for charging us for a game we have not seen we will not see till only you know when.

The player base understands that company's need to make money, god i under stand that its not easy but this is not the right way of doing it. the player base is not all gone we still hold hope for you to fix this but as it stands you are loosing more of the player base by the day all cos of the lack of speeking to the player base its not hard.

In life thay say that all press is good press even if its bad but from some of the new storys i have read and a lot of others have this time it looks to be bad press as its killing a game. ark is bigger then un all so pull your finger out and show us what your relay think of your player base fans and at the point the are family.

even if you just offer a 1 time upgrade to ASA for only players that own Ark ES and anyone that dose not own ark se will have to pay for ASA as a new game. the player base has spent a lot of money on are with all the dlc and extra life events over the years im sure the least you can do is give a one time upgrade to the who own ark se to ASA  and the new players will have to buy it this way you will still make games sales and the player base will start to return as thay have something thing.

as for official ark se server been closed why not keep them running for longer even if you slow the updates to only serious ones and do not have evo events or events to keep the work load down on that front. people have spent there lives on official servers breading building and playing there is hole discord server just for dinos for triad for all this to be takes a way is just killing the game no very few people are playing cos for the servers closing. there is games companies out there that are still supporting games that are older then are with official server to play on and for you to give us months to deal with is is very poor on your even.  we do not know what the new ASA will be like we just want our game to live one and we with us when we get home from work or when we are haveing a bad day we can go and are and speak to friends that we have met playing ark. but all that looks to be over now as have just take it all way from us thanks wildcard / snail games

this is the end of ark as we know it as the players start looking for new games to play and so will i but least we forget the good old days of are  all the people we have met playing are some good some not so good.

lets hope ASA is not the new ATLAS never mind how the player base is going to take to ark 2 in 2068 when it comes out good luck
