  • Community Crunch 355: ARK Roadmap, EVO Event, and More!

     welcome_crunch2023-1.png

    Hey there Survivors!

We’re ready to reveal ARK's roadmap for the next year, covering various game-related initiatives, new platforms, and media.  The community’s support continues to be incredibly humbling and inspiring for the team, and that enthusiasm helps drive us toward creating the ultimate survival franchise. What we’ve planned has changed due to many shifting factors, but we believe it will ultimately provide the most fun and excitement for everyone who enjoys ARK.

We know you’re eager for the lowdown on our plans and more transparency regarding what’s behind the curtain, what’s evolved, and what has sprung anew, and we’re ready to share that with you… But before starting, we want you to meet our new friend!

    And now, for the roadmap…

    ark2heading.png

After careful consideration, we have decided to delay the sequel's launch to the end of 2024, when it will still launch exclusively on Xbox, Game Pass, and Windows distribution platforms (Steam/PC). We’ve put much thought into delaying ARK 2 for the betterment of the final product and the team's well-being. This news will be disappointing to many - we feel it too - but we’re confident this heavy decision is the right one.

So why the delay? Our goal is to make ARK 2 the best game it can be and provide a truly exceptional and rewarding experience for players. Unreal Engine 5 is incredibly new technology to us (and all developers), and we aim to use this cutting-edge tech to its fullest potential while creating a game with never-before-achieved scope at Studio Wildcard. As we learn more about the engine and develop the sequel, we have adapted our workflows and adjusted our pipelines to accommodate this new next-generation paradigm, and because of everything that involves, we need more time for development.

We sincerely apologize for this delay and genuinely appreciate your understanding. Your support and passion are vital to us, and we will continue to work intensively to deliver the ultimate next-gen dinosaur survival experience. With that in mind, we do not plan to showcase any gameplay/screenshots/videos of ARK 2 this year; however, we intend to keep you informed and engaged in the development process by regularly showcasing more ARK 2 assets in the months ahead, leading to our gameplay reveal next year.

But! Our desire to push the boundaries of what ARK 2 is on a next-generation platform has led us to the decision to create an intermediary Unreal Engine 5 ARK product utilizing some of the new technology we are building, allowing us to further our mastery of the new engine and ultimately battle-test some of our riskier technical advancements. We’ll gain a deep understanding of how well the rendering and lighting techniques work on console, what performance will be like, whether we can optimize and deliver interactive water and foliage on a widescale basis, and much more. We will deliver cross-platform modding, cross-platform multiplayer & a new account system, informing us about other changes we should consider for ARK 2. Due to the scope of all the technical and QOL changes required for such a next-gen experience, it is not feasible to make this new version of ARK backward compatible, which led us to conclude that this would need to be a separate product.

We also recognize that ARK 2 has some pretty significant design changes from the original game, which may not make it as appealing to everyone (looking at you, Souls-like combat, primitive-only weaponry, and strict third-person mechanics – and an overall “very serious” tone), which is why we feel it is essential to provide players with a fully next-gen version of the original experience to ensure that fans can continue to enjoy the ARK they know for years to come.

We’re thrilled to share this new ARK journey with you this year -- bringing players from PC, Xbox, and PlayStation together in a next-generation version of the game you love, topped off with revolutionary cross-platform modding.

ARK: Survival Ascended is a next-generation remaster of our beloved ARK: Survival Evolved, harnessing the power of Unreal Engine 5. It will be released on Xbox Series S/X, PC (Windows/Steam), and PlayStation 5 by the end of August 2023. The base game will include The Island, SOTF, and all the “Non-Canon” DLC maps (which will be added to ASA over time).

Xbox Series S/X and PC players will only be able to get it via an ultimate-value bundle known as the ARK Respawned Bundle. This bundle includes ownership of both ARK: Survival Ascended AND ARK 2 and will be priced at $49.99. This bundle will be available to purchase from the end of August for up to 1 year (after which ARK: Survival Ascended and ARK 2 will be sold separately). Additionally, the bundle will provide players access to an exclusive 1-month closed-beta to ARK 2 in 2024 before the rest of the general public can play ARK 2.

PlayStation 5 users will be able to get their hands on ARK: Survival Ascended as a standalone next-gen game at launch in August 2023 for $39.99.

All the expansion packs will be sold separately on all platforms:

    • $19.99 for Explorer’s Pass, which includes Scorched Earth, Aberration (Q4 2023), and Extinction (Q1 2024).
    • $19.99 for Genesis Pass, which includes Genesis Part 1 (Q1 2024) and Genesis Part 2 (Q2 2024).

At ARK: Survival Ascended’s launch, players will have access to The Island, Scorched Earth, and the new revamped game mode, Survival of the Fittest.

In addition to many other new features, ARK: Survival Ascended will feature the following improvements and enhancements:

    • Unreal Engine 5 Overhaul with Nanite, Lumen and RTXDI
    • Dynamic Water
    • Interactive Foliage
    • Unreal Engine 5 performance gains: instanced-rendering (large-bases etc.), threaded server networking, and native physics engine
    • Cross-platform Multiplayer
      • This includes cross-platform accounts and cross-progression, cross-voice chat & friends, etc. No matter what platform you start playing on, you can access your account, character, dinos, and items on a different platform for the ultimate cross-platform experience.
    • Cross-platform Modding
      • We recognize the power of giving players the tools and capability to define their survival experience, so we want to take cross-platform one step further by working with  Overwolf  to introduce an industry-first cross-platform modding experience where mods created on PC are delivered directly to end-users’ consoles from a custom modding backend.
      • The modding capability will include FULL blueprinting support ;), stacked mods, and maps. Everything that is currently possible on the Steam version of ARK: Survival Evolved and more will be possible on the new system and be available for end-users to play on consoles in all modes.
      • Premium Mods: Reviewed by Overwolf and Wildcard for quality control and value, Mod authors will optionally be able to specify price points for their Mods (with 50% of the price point going to the Mod author). This is necessary to pay for the custom infrastructure required for Overwolf to support, administrate, and deliver Mods to the console.
      • We plan on streamlining the process of upgrading legacy ARK: Survival Evolved mods to the next-generation platform. We plan to reach out to current/former sponsored modders in preparation for the launch of ASA with the tools they need to get their mods ready before the launch.
    • Cross-platform Anti-Cheat
    • Survival of the Fittest
      • SOTF will be integrated into the main product as a new fully-supported game mode. It will have a dedicated team that will continue to work on more gameplay changes, mechanical improvements, quality of life, maps, and balance adjustments. The initial mode will be revamped with an exclusive ARK: Survival Ascended update, including:
        • Upgraded to Unreal Engine 5 with complete cross-platform and cross-modding support (the SOTF UE5 source content will be released for modders to utilize as they wish within ASA)
        • Scorched Earth SOTF Map
        • Matchmaking queue
        • Character and Creature customization with cosmetics
        • Local Lobby where you can group up with your friends, configure the look of your survivor and dinos, and queue up for lobbies together
        • Lots of bug-fixes and balance and functionality improvements
    • Art Assets are being upgraded throughout the entire game
    • Newly-designed holiday events take advantage of the next-gen pipeline, released as mods, so they’re always available to play!
    • New content, QOL improvements, balance, and gameplay changes, including but not limited to:
      • Updated mini-map (pan, zoom, pings, etc – similar to the SOTF mini-map)
      • New structures (display cases, smaller TEK Teleporters) & building QOL improvements (snap fixes, increased foundation support, foundation height adjustments, and more)
      • Queueing System
      • New third-person camera (with the option to opt out)
      • Directional Sprinting and Walking
      • Ping system
      • Gamepad cursor
      • Chibi Slot and Skins Tab
      • Balance passes (e.g. Cave Entrances, MEKs, Aberration Creatures, more breedable creatures, etc)
      • …and more! (seriously, a lot more, this list isn’t exhaustive, but it’ll get super long if we list everything, and there’s more we’ll decide to do between now and launch too)

    LiveOperationssubheading.png

We understand there will be questions regarding LiveOps for the product, so we’ll review some key areas now.

    • Final Content Update: In June for ARK’s 8th Anniversary, we’ll release ARK: Survival Evolved’s final content update, which includes the fan-voted Rhyniognatha!
    • Cross-platform: It’s important to note that ARK: Survival Evolved (ARK:SE) and ARK: Survival Ascended (ASA) will coexist but will not support crossplay between the two games. ASA will have undergone profound functional changes which prevent it from being compatible with the previous game.
    • Holiday Events: We plan to develop and release ASA-exclusive holiday content that takes advantage of the next-gen pipeline released in mods, so they’re always available to play!
    • Official Servers: With the launch of ASA at the end of August, we will be taking down all Official Servers on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC for ARK: Survival Evolved – at that time, the final save-datas from the ARK: Survival Evolved Official Servers will be uploaded for players to re-host on their own servers or play in singleplayer/non-dedi, as well as slightly earlier snapshots. You will still be able to play on single-player, non-dedicated, player-dedicated, and unofficial servers. ARK: Survival Ascended will have its own fully supported Official Network for all platforms.
    • Feature Sunset: With the launch of ASA, we will be ending official support for Primitive+, Split Screen, and Procedurally Generated Maps. These aspects of the game will not be ported to the new Unreal Engine 5 version.
    • We will look into releasing the source files for Primitive+ for those that wish to repurpose aspects of it for mods.
    • ARK: Survival Ascended Updates: The remaster will have regular updates to resolve bugs, introduce new content, balance changes, and quality-of-life improvements for years to come.
    • ARK: Survival Evolved Updates: will be limited to crashes and critical bug fixes.

    paidexpansionheading.png

We plan to release a new canonical-story expansion pack for ARK: Survival Ascended that will be available in Q4 2023. This DLC will feature four new creatures, which we’ll share more details about later this year!

    ARK_Ultimate_Bundle_2560x1440_V05.jpg

ARK: Ultimate Survivor Edition has been off to a great start on Nintendo Switch. The insightful crew at Digital Foundry called it "one of the most radical improvements in game quality (they've) ever seen."

So far, we've launched Scorched Earth, Aberration, and Ragnarok, with Extinction coming on April 11th. Our current estimated timeline for the rest of our significant releases is as follows:

    • April 2023 - Extinction
    • May 2023 - Small Tribes servers
    • June 2023 - Genesis Part 1
    • October 2023 - Genesis Part 2
    • Winter 2023 into 2024 - Remaining community maps

Spring has been an exciting time on the platform, with the release of the Carcharodontosaurus now roaming around The Island and Ragnarok. Eggcellent Adventure begins on April 3rd, bringing this full event to players on Nintendo Switch for the first time. Lest we forget ARK: Dinosaur Discovery, which also saw a content update to v1.5, recently adding a full-featured in-game map and numerous gameplay improvements. As a reminder, ARK: Dinosaur Discovery is a separate download available for FREE to all digital owners of ARK on Nintendo Switch.

Finally, we are happy to welcome a swath of new players from Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan & South Korea. Both titles are now available locally on Nintendo Switch in those regions from our partners at Spike Chunsoft.

    arkmobilerevamp.png

We have some important news for Mobile Survivors! At the year's end, we anticipate a relaunch of ARK: Mobile as a completely revamped product. It will be based on a graphically improved version of the Switch codebase due to the increased power generally available with mobile devices and include new Switch features and content and mobile-specific changes. We plan to release all the expansion packs and non-cannon maps over time into this revamped version, and from that point onwards, ARK: Mobile will have its product lifecycle and roadmap.

ARK: The Animated Series has completed the animation and cast recordings of all its 14 initial episodes, which are currently in post-production (VFX, sound mix, etc.). We're delighted with how the show turned out -- it's an epic melodramatic love letter to dinosaurs, fantasy/sci-fi, and of course ARK itself -- though we have not placed it yet with any platform, hence the lack of news in that area. So as soon as there's more to report, we will let you know!

Thank you everyone for reading through this substantial write-up, and stay tuned for more information on the ARK: Survival Ascended in the months ahead toward its August launch!

I would like to know where mod creators stand on putting their mods on overwolf and players being massively overcharged for their mods for something that was free through steam workshop

mod creators and youtubers are already fapping due the "multiplatform" (and so overwolf). Others that really loved the game and did everything for passion are quitting (just like the creator and only developer of ASM https://www.reddit.com/r/playark/comments/1299gn2/leadonly_dev_on_ark_server_manager_and_conan/)

All this will kill also unofficial (and of course create gazillion of issues on official servers, just have a look ho badly Xbox and Microsoft Store users co-existed in the same clusters) for multiple reasons: unofficial is backboned on free mod support and no authentication issues.

Multiplatform may mean the end of the server runtimes and go in the EA-model like of unofficial servers, where you have to pay the publisher to rent your server, and this because Microsoft and Sony do not like 3rd party and individuals to fooling around with their authentications APIs (needed for multiplatform)... Unless they decide to leave PC/Steam server runtimes without multiplatform of course, but paid mod system still apply.

Well that says it all, Wild card has just announced we are not Trust worthy.

Free upgrade to UE 5 - Hmm take that back no it $50 and as their is only 1 map so for an extra $20 you can play Scorched earth too.

i persosnally play with my 2 kids so for me thats $210.

You no longer can play on your Ark 1 server as we are deleting them all ...Thanks for your money just pay again.

You do get Ark 2 with this bundle at the end of 2021 nope 2022 nope 2023 nope 2024 Maybe. But we cant show you any game play, graphics, Dino's, structures infact we cant / wont show you anything other than concept Art Just take our word for it ...Hmmmm NO THANKS

Personally for me i would prefer to pay say $20  for the Ascended and crack on with that and possibly paid DLC in the future. As i think their will be too many changes to ark 2 and it wont feel like ark attall  and for alot of people will be disappointing  ( Mcdonalds released the big mac in 1967 and who dosent like a big mac now and again ) no need to change the game completely in my opinion

Yeah, I think many people missed that although Scorched Earth is available on launch, you still need to pay an extra $20 for that pass to get it.

Ark2, I still firmly believe it's not the technical aspects of UE5 that caused the delay but rather a realisation that the design doesn't work well and needs two yrs of re-design from the ground up. Despite the title, the description makes it sound like a spin off title and who knows what it will look like at all by release. Even they don't know really.

Also, they're touting a lot of fixes/features/asset upgrades for ASA in the roadmap to sweeten the bitter pill. However, how much trust can you place on these being delivered and well functioning based on their own premise that the technical aspects of UE5 prevented them from releasing ARK2 and that they'll use ASA as a test bed.

If ASA is only 5 months away, wouldn't you go out of your way to show actual gameplay and features rather than tiny teasers to try and convince customers of how good it is to swallow the proposed price gouging and that it's worth it?  Or will it be a buggy mess missing most features at launch and the excuse will be ''well UE5 is new but don't worry we'll fix it and add the features further down the line like we did Ark1, trust us guys!''.

Four creatures (possibly the runner ups of the competition) and a map for a paid DLC already sounds  more like a community map like Fjordur rather than any previous paid DLC. In other words very lacklustre by comparison.

All I'm saying is you can't trust any promise without backing evidence and certainly can't trust any time scales at all in the road map. Best not to hype and wait for actual actions and evidence. Flashy trailers like 2042 etc and teasers just won't cut the mustard. They have to show the real deal, the gameplay and features.

They would show gameplay for ASA if it existed.

The only way ASA would be out by August would be if they were showing gameplay already.

Therefore...highly unlikely that it's being released in August ..I suspect a desperate attempt to calm the outrage. I do hope i'm wrong though.

WC can't even launch regurgitated content on time.

Not even going to say anything about Ark Ascended or Ark Survival Second ( ASS for short ). Everything that needs to be said has already been stated, people are unhappy and WC is completely out of touch with their community.

Considering how many comments are here, this will likely be white noise, but I wanted to at least have my say.  The elimination of split screen is going to be the end of my Ark gaming.  Currently I have 2 last generation consoles that my husband and I use to play on a private server.  Split screen was never awesome, but it was a way we played locally until we got the second console.  But now, to play Ark Ascended, I would have to buy two next gen consoles.  I would like to to try to new version of the game, but it gets boring solo very quickly. I can’t afford two $600 consoles just to play one game.  And that’s on top of the need to purchase the remastered version, expansions, and Mods.  It’s just too much.

I’ve been playing Ark since Beta.  This game speaks to me in a way that no other game has. I’ve seen the highs and the lows.  I bought the box set with the dossier and all the fun extras.  I’ve been there and donated to their Extra Life charities.  This game was life for me for so long.  But this new announcement is really the final nail in the coffin.  And not just because of the split screen.  It feels like it’s not worth it to continue playing.  Mostly because it seems like they are drifting further and further away from what the fans want.  Dark Souls like combat for Ark 2?  Nope.  That’s not Ark.  That took the wind out of my sails in a way that nothing else did.

I still have that Ark server.  Might be time to say goodbye.

Technically your buying/preordering Ark2 for 10. While PS players are W....T....F will we pay just 10 too whenever it finally releases.

I think you meant to say you would like separate option too?

Ark2 I'll buy when released but I'm sure it won't be 10 for me on ps

Playstation users don't get Ark 2 included though lol. Xbox & PC users get ASA and Ark 2 for 49.99.

Try reading the roadmap first before making silly comments. 🤦‍♂️

I’m sorry you are determined to stick to your price. I said in a previous comment that I wasn’t going to buy Ark Survival Ascended because of the toxic PvP players, but I have more reasons now to not buy it. I just found out that Snail Inc is a China based company who answers to the CCP. What makes you think I am going to pay 50.00 usd to have my data taken and given to the CCP. I never had any interest in getting Ark II. I don’t even play The Survival of the Fittest in any of its forms. And I don’t support this paid mod support setup. Hasbro and WoTC tried that with the D&D OGL 2.0. Their community rebelled against them too. How many mods has this game’s developers taken and made official? This is literally setting mod creators up to be robbed. If the developers see something they really like, take it, make it official and leave the mod creator with nothing. How many mods have become obsolete over the years? Think of all the great mods they have already taken and implemented as official dlc or tlc.

To my fellow survivors, you must break this addiction to Ark and move on. This whole roadmap stinks of bad business and the stench of it is most foul. Don’t give in.

Snail INC is an American subsidiary, and a joint-stock company on Nasdaq, which is controlled somehow  by the PRC company Snail. Money and so data transactions are done through stores (Steam, Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo etc) and the relative countries location. You don't pay the games to give data to the CCP.

been waiting to see if any word on this but still radio silence i see.

ive been thinking, that i seriously do not trust that ASA will even be released on time. as others have said, where is the gameplay? where are the teasers? do we even have any evidence at all? i hope they put out something next crunch. hopefully something that isnt more empty promises.

so what, are the servers going to shut down and then, oops! sorry everyone. you have to wait until december for ASA when conveniently sales will be higher? i dont trust it at all.

What concerns me is that anyone could, right now, hire an attorney and create a company called "Studio Wildcard". Additionally, they could trademark the game called "Ark 2" and "Ark Survival Ascended".

The way the law works on patents, trademarks and copyrights is that you can "improve" or "add to" any of them and get trademark/copyright approval in the United States. It's first to file.

It's pretty obvious to me that Wildcard (if that's its real DBA name) is giving itself an out and back door in case this new Ark 2 fails.

Oh, by the way, the CEO and one of the founders of Wildcard, Doug Kennedy, recently quit and went to a new gaming company called VoxPop Games. He is their new Executive Chairman.

"To clarify: the UE5 tease a couple weeks back is referring to in-the-works complete free upgrade/remaster of ARK Survival Evolved in UnrealEngine5. Not a cinematic. We havent officially announced the ARK UE5 upgrade yet 'cause there's other major things we wanna show then as well" (Twitter, Jeremy Stieglitz @jeremystieglitz, 23. Jan.)

Yea, Yea ... sure ... sounds great ...

"The underlying data structures of UE5 and UE4 are quite similar outside of certain features - though of course getting everything to migrate 100% is a process. But much of underlying nongfx technical work had already been done for ARK Switch port which brought codebase to UE 4.27" (Twitter, Jeremy Stieglitz @jeremystieglitz, 23. Jan.)

Ah... that sounds worth 50 bucks, ain't it?

    *siiiiiiiiigh*

Ah... sorry yeah... we all were reeeaaaaaal dumbos ... ARK2 is 50 bucks and the ASA is free ... oh how generous ... then please sell us both separately ASA 0 bucks, ARK 2 50 bucks ... thats fine.

But for real, the proposal from @slejo sounds reasonable:

Maybe think about it. I think especially for players that allready own the game the 90 bucks are a hard slap in the face - even with ARK2 included. I don't like souls-like games, so I would pay for a game that I won't play. Or the other way around I pay the price of 1 1/2 AAA titles for a repolished version of a game I allready own - sound not fair to me...

I've seen that he joined the other board. I've not seen that he quit WildCard. Source?

Look into Family Share Settings. You don't have to buy it 3 times for the consoles in your household. They don't make this very clear because people just pay for multiple accounts and installs. You get 3 profiles linked to share the live and all games purchased from the main account.

looks like the studio is keeping an eye on it and amused everyone with an April Fool's prank. In case that they will really plan this, I hope that they are smart enough to turn PVE to PVP asap, so we will not lost our stuff for nothing. Keep fighting and surviving ;)

what good would that do if they want to play say.. together? which my family does. Family sharing doesn't cover that.

1 live account. 1 game purchased. 2 consoles. 2 accounts playing at the same time side by side. I do it daily.
