  • Community Crunch 355: ARK Roadmap, EVO Event, and More!

     welcome_crunch2023-1.png

    Hey there Survivors!

We’re ready to reveal ARK's roadmap for the next year, covering various game-related initiatives, new platforms, and media.  The community’s support continues to be incredibly humbling and inspiring for the team, and that enthusiasm helps drive us toward creating the ultimate survival franchise. What we’ve planned has changed due to many shifting factors, but we believe it will ultimately provide the most fun and excitement for everyone who enjoys ARK.

We know you’re eager for the lowdown on our plans and more transparency regarding what’s behind the curtain, what’s evolved, and what has sprung anew, and we’re ready to share that with you… But before starting, we want you to meet our new friend!

    And now, for the roadmap…

    ark2heading.png

After careful consideration, we have decided to delay the sequel's launch to the end of 2024, when it will still launch exclusively on Xbox, Game Pass, and Windows distribution platforms (Steam/PC). We’ve put much thought into delaying ARK 2 for the betterment of the final product and the team's well-being. This news will be disappointing to many - we feel it too - but we’re confident this heavy decision is the right one.

So why the delay? Our goal is to make ARK 2 the best game it can be and provide a truly exceptional and rewarding experience for players. Unreal Engine 5 is incredibly new technology to us (and all developers), and we aim to use this cutting-edge tech to its fullest potential while creating a game with never-before-achieved scope at Studio Wildcard. As we learn more about the engine and develop the sequel, we have adapted our workflows and adjusted our pipelines to accommodate this new next-generation paradigm, and because of everything that involves, we need more time for development.

We sincerely apologize for this delay and genuinely appreciate your understanding. Your support and passion are vital to us, and we will continue to work intensively to deliver the ultimate next-gen dinosaur survival experience. With that in mind, we do not plan to showcase any gameplay/screenshots/videos of ARK 2 this year; however, we intend to keep you informed and engaged in the development process by regularly showcasing more ARK 2 assets in the months ahead, leading to our gameplay reveal next year.

But! Our desire to push the boundaries of what ARK 2 is on a next-generation platform has led us to the decision to create an intermediary Unreal Engine 5 ARK product utilizing some of the new technology we are building, allowing us to further our mastery of the new engine and ultimately battle-test some of our riskier technical advancements. We’ll gain a deep understanding of how well the rendering and lighting techniques work on console, what performance will be like, whether we can optimize and deliver interactive water and foliage on a widescale basis, and much more. We will deliver cross-platform modding, cross-platform multiplayer & a new account system, informing us about other changes we should consider for ARK 2. Due to the scope of all the technical and QOL changes required for such a next-gen experience, it is not feasible to make this new version of ARK backward compatible, which led us to conclude that this would need to be a separate product.

We also recognize that ARK 2 has some pretty significant design changes from the original game, which may not make it as appealing to everyone (looking at you, Souls-like combat, primitive-only weaponry, and strict third-person mechanics – and an overall “very serious” tone), which is why we feel it is essential to provide players with a fully next-gen version of the original experience to ensure that fans can continue to enjoy the ARK they know for years to come.

We’re thrilled to share this new ARK journey with you this year -- bringing players from PC, Xbox, and PlayStation together in a next-generation version of the game you love, topped off with revolutionary cross-platform modding.

ARK: Survival Ascended is a next-generation remaster of our beloved ARK: Survival Evolved, harnessing the power of Unreal Engine 5. It will be released on Xbox Series S/X, PC (Windows/Steam), and PlayStation 5 by the end of August 2023. The base game will include The Island, SOTF, and all the “Non-Canon” DLC maps (which will be added to ASA over time).

Xbox Series S/X and PC players will only be able to get it via an ultimate-value bundle known as the ARK Respawned Bundle. This bundle includes ownership of both ARK: Survival Ascended AND ARK 2 and will be priced at $49.99. This bundle will be available to purchase from the end of August for up to 1 year (after which ARK: Survival Ascended and ARK 2 will be sold separately). Additionally, the bundle will provide players access to an exclusive 1-month closed-beta to ARK 2 in 2024 before the rest of the general public can play ARK 2.

PlayStation 5 users will be able to get their hands on ARK: Survival Ascended as a standalone next-gen game at launch in August 2023 for $39.99.

All the expansion packs will be sold separately on all platforms:

    • $19.99 for Explorer’s Pass, which includes Scorched Earth, Aberration (Q4 2023), and Extinction (Q1 2024).
    • $19.99 for Genesis Pass, which includes Genesis Part 1 (Q1 2024) and Genesis Part 2 (Q2 2024).

At ARK: Survival Ascended’s launch, players will have access to The Island, Scorched Earth, and the new revamped game mode, Survival of the Fittest.

In addition to many other new features, ARK: Survival Ascended will feature the following improvements and enhancements:

    • Unreal Engine 5 Overhaul with Nanite, Lumen and RTXDI
    • Dynamic Water
    • Interactive Foliage
    • Unreal Engine 5 performance gains: instanced-rendering (large-bases etc.), threaded server networking, and native physics engine
    • Cross-platform Multiplayer
      • This includes cross-platform accounts and cross-progression, cross-voice chat & friends, etc. No matter what platform you start playing on, you can access your account, character, dinos, and items on a different platform for the ultimate cross-platform experience.
    • Cross-platform Modding
      • We recognize the power of giving players the tools and capability to define their survival experience, so we want to take cross-platform one step further by working with  Overwolf  to introduce an industry-first cross-platform modding experience where mods created on PC are delivered directly to end-users’ consoles from a custom modding backend.
      • The modding capability will include FULL blueprinting support ;), stacked mods, and maps. Everything that is currently possible on the Steam version of ARK: Survival Evolved and more will be possible on the new system and be available for end-users to play on consoles in all modes.
      • Premium Mods: Reviewed by Overwolf and Wildcard for quality control and value, Mod authors will optionally be able to specify price points for their Mods (with 50% of the price point going to the Mod author). This is necessary to pay for the custom infrastructure required for Overwolf to support, administrate, and deliver Mods to the console.
      • We plan on streamlining the process of upgrading legacy ARK: Survival Evolved mods to the next-generation platform. We plan to reach out to current/former sponsored modders in preparation for the launch of ASA with the tools they need to get their mods ready before the launch.
    • Cross-platform Anti-Cheat
    • Survival of the Fittest
      • SOTF will be integrated into the main product as a new fully-supported game mode. It will have a dedicated team that will continue to work on more gameplay changes, mechanical improvements, quality of life, maps, and balance adjustments. The initial mode will be revamped with an exclusive ARK: Survival Ascended update, including:
        • Upgraded to Unreal Engine 5 with complete cross-platform and cross-modding support (the SOTF UE5 source content will be released for modders to utilize as they wish within ASA)
        • Scorched Earth SOTF Map
        • Matchmaking queue
        • Character and Creature customization with cosmetics
        • Local Lobby where you can group up with your friends, configure the look of your survivor and dinos, and queue up for lobbies together
        • Lots of bug-fixes and balance and functionality improvements
    • Art Assets are being upgraded throughout the entire game
    • Newly-designed holiday events take advantage of the next-gen pipeline, released as mods, so they’re always available to play!
    • New content, QOL improvements, balance, and gameplay changes, including but not limited to:
      • Updated mini-map (pan, zoom, pings, etc – similar to the SOTF mini-map)
      • New structures (display cases, smaller TEK Teleporters) & building QOL improvements (snap fixes, increased foundation support, foundation height adjustments, and more)
      • Queueing System
      • New third-person camera (with the option to opt out)
      • Directional Sprinting and Walking
      • Ping system
      • Gamepad cursor
      • Chibi Slot and Skins Tab
      • Balance passes (e.g. Cave Entrances, MEKs, Aberration Creatures, more breedable creatures, etc)
      • …and more! (seriously, a lot more, this list isn’t exhaustive, but it’ll get super long if we list everything, and there’s more we’ll decide to do between now and launch too)

    LiveOperationssubheading.png

We understand there will be questions regarding LiveOps for the product, so we’ll review some key areas now.

    • Final Content Update: In June for ARK’s 8th Anniversary, we’ll release ARK: Survival Evolved’s final content update, which includes the fan-voted Rhyniognatha!
    • Cross-platform: It’s important to note that ARK: Survival Evolved (ARK:SE) and ARK: Survival Ascended (ASA) will coexist but will not support crossplay between the two games. ASA will have undergone profound functional changes which prevent it from being compatible with the previous game.
    • Holiday Events: We plan to develop and release ASA-exclusive holiday content that takes advantage of the next-gen pipeline released in mods, so they’re always available to play!
    • Official Servers: With the launch of ASA at the end of August, we will be taking down all Official Servers on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC for ARK: Survival Evolved – at that time, the final save-datas from the ARK: Survival Evolved Official Servers will be uploaded for players to re-host on their own servers or play in singleplayer/non-dedi, as well as slightly earlier snapshots. You will still be able to play on single-player, non-dedicated, player-dedicated, and unofficial servers. ARK: Survival Ascended will have its own fully supported Official Network for all platforms.
    • Feature Sunset: With the launch of ASA, we will be ending official support for Primitive+, Split Screen, and Procedurally Generated Maps. These aspects of the game will not be ported to the new Unreal Engine 5 version.
    • We will look into releasing the source files for Primitive+ for those that wish to repurpose aspects of it for mods.
    • ARK: Survival Ascended Updates: The remaster will have regular updates to resolve bugs, introduce new content, balance changes, and quality-of-life improvements for years to come.
    • ARK: Survival Evolved Updates: will be limited to crashes and critical bug fixes.

We plan to release a new canonical-story expansion pack for ARK: Survival Ascended that will be available in Q4 2023. This DLC will feature four new creatures, which we’ll share more details about later this year!

    ARK_Ultimate_Bundle_2560x1440_V05.jpg

ARK: Ultimate Survivor Edition has been off to a great start on Nintendo Switch. The insightful crew at Digital Foundry called it "one of the most radical improvements in game quality (they've) ever seen."

So far, we've launched Scorched Earth, Aberration, and Ragnarok, with Extinction coming on April 11th. Our current estimated timeline for the rest of our significant releases is as follows:

    • April 2023 - Extinction
    • May 2023 - Small Tribes servers
    • June 2023 - Genesis Part 1
    • October 2023 - Genesis Part 2
    • Winter 2023 into 2024 - Remaining community maps

Spring has been an exciting time on the platform, with the release of the Carcharodontosaurus now roaming around The Island and Ragnarok. Eggcellent Adventure begins on April 3rd, bringing this full event to players on Nintendo Switch for the first time. Lest we forget ARK: Dinosaur Discovery, which also saw a content update to v1.5, recently adding a full-featured in-game map and numerous gameplay improvements. As a reminder, ARK: Dinosaur Discovery is a separate download available for FREE to all digital owners of ARK on Nintendo Switch.

Finally, we are happy to welcome a swath of new players from Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan & South Korea. Both titles are now available locally on Nintendo Switch in those regions from our partners at Spike Chunsoft.

    arkmobilerevamp.png

We have some important news for Mobile Survivors! At the year's end, we anticipate a relaunch of ARK: Mobile as a completely revamped product. It will be based on a graphically improved version of the Switch codebase due to the increased power generally available with mobile devices and include new Switch features and content and mobile-specific changes. We plan to release all the expansion packs and non-cannon maps over time into this revamped version, and from that point onwards, ARK: Mobile will have its product lifecycle and roadmap.

ARK: The Animated Series has completed the animation and cast recordings of all its 14 initial episodes, which are currently in post-production (VFX, sound mix, etc.). We're delighted with how the show turned out -- it's an epic melodramatic love letter to dinosaurs, fantasy/sci-fi, and of course ARK itself -- though we have not placed it yet with any platform, hence the lack of news in that area. So as soon as there's more to report, we will let you know!

Thank you everyone for reading through this substantial write-up, and stay tuned for more information on the ARK: Survival Ascended in the months ahead toward its August launch!

Huh... and I though screwing up the ATLAS release was the worst to come... WC allways is able to top poop up xD...

... so with ATLAS and nearly every WC release in mind I was expecting a delayed ARK II ... fine (nevertheless 2 years was also beyond my expectations)

... the trailer for ARK II also fed my fear that ARK II would not be a "real" ARK experience for me anymore - an experience no other game could provide me with - a mixture between survival, non-grid-locked base building, shooter like combat with support of a variety of tames, each with dedicated pupose ... fine ... I don't have to play it if it's not "my" ARK experience.

BUT NOW THEY FORCE ME TO BUY THEIR poopY VISION OF "CONAN ELDEN EXILES RING SOULS" TO BE ABLE TO PLAY MY ARK EXPERIENCE AND THEY DARE TO MAKE ME PAY FOR SOME FUNNY WATER REFLEXIONS, LIGHT RAYS AND (HOPEFULLY A TON OF) FIXES THEY SHOULD HAVE MADE YEARS AGO - NON-CONNECTING SHOTS, GRAPPLE GLITCHES, RELOAD BUGS, A MESH LIKE SWISS CHEESE AND MANY I FORGOT IN RAGE MODE...

YOU    HAVE    BALLS    GUYS AND GALS... Holy GSS

It's annoying the ARK II's delay, but nothing too serious. I mean, it's not as anyone here had bought the game...

It's REALLY annoying - and disrespectful! - to make who already have ARK SE to pay for the ARK ASA.

And, to top it all, shutting down the servers - while STILL selling the game! Not, this should be criminal - literally.

They could end ARK SE, give ASA for free for who already have the game and upgrade all servers to ASA. Sure, it would inconvenience some people - but at least would be logical and provide a way to keep gaming.

I don't mind that whoever buys ASA gets ARK2 - as long as it only affects who doesn't already have the game. It would be like a "2 for the price of one".

We, that already have ARK SE, would pay (if wanted) to buy ARK 2. I would be fine with this.

Hopping that this was all a bad april fool joke.

I dont know about everyone else but i am extremely exited for ASA because the possibilities are almost endless. If they do the new story dlc right it could be amazing, i know they said the new dlc would only have 4 new creatures but i hope its a bit more than that. I also think that an idea that i think neddythenoodle said was that the dlc should be is one that bridges Extinction and Gen 1.

I think the first thing I'd do is hit up Gen2 and do all the missions before the servers turn to poop.

Is your issue cost of all the empty and low pop servers? Or at least part of the issue. Why not just consolidate and maybe users may lose bases but can transfer tames and so forth while keeping character progress. Or give them something for loss of base. I know consolidating servers bases can’t due to conflicting base locations but everything from character, tames, items is workable. Then maybe a query that depending on how large a base its users get those items or something along those lines of a loot bag while migrating users into new servers after consolidation. Anyway, for me loss of base is least issue. For me it’s more the grind to tame, get boss fights to unlock tek etc. not to mention time to level. I can rebuild a base easily, but the tames, especially mutation chains, grind and all that is the biggest issue on just wiping. If issue is like I mentioned before I say work a server consolidation plan.

Shoot, I work in IT with background in Sys/Network and currently work as a database, application, and automation specialist. Hire me and I can get it done 😉. I’m currently doing the opposite for work and splitting DBs.

Also, if issue is cost vs revenue maybe making a store for skins, accessories and customizations that are not "pay to win". Much how some games have a premium store for skins and such that offer no in game benefit but may mitigate some of the costs running servers which consolidating should already help. Also maybe cleaning databases of old accounts. Maybe set to stale characters over X time to wipe and run that query on a schedule. Also maybe set limits of how many characters players can have though that could affect some players that may have over any limit set but it's a thought. There are many ideas I can think of to mitigate DB/storage size.

Also, maybe if there is a consolidation where all bases are wiped though characters, dino etc. are set into a download folder where users can upload as if when transferring maps then restructure base building to limit spam and base sizes. This could help DB, storage and even performance on previous gen consoles as well.

If this is not an option, please let us know on what you mean that the "saved data" will be uploaded for use? Does this mean everything down to the databases even on console where someone like me can essentially launch official servers as they were upon shutdown? I know at the moment running a server on console is limited to ini files and a few options via portals but no modding or DB access. I may be interested in making this a project to put up a consolidated version of the official servers if possible depending on how we/I can work it. There would be some logistics to take care of. I just do not want my self as well as everyone that has put so much time and effort to lose all they have built and worked on. Feel free to contact me. My email is in my account in which you can contact me.

For community, would this be something that works for you either via ARK servers and consolidate with some ideas presented or if not the second option of say someone like me reviving the servers after shutdown in a consolidated form? I am not guaranteeing I would take this on as there would be a lot of logistics to look into but it seems like a next best option if Ark official servers are out of the question. But there is a few months to look into, plan and talk to key stakeholders to make it possible.

I'd like some clarification, so do owners of OG ark get the upgraded version for free and the bundle only being for those who don't own the game yet? whats the deal?

Totally agree but server review&consolidation was never been a problem since they never did it in the last 3 years and a half, (on Official PVE there are still running some legacy servers!). I never played for real any longer Official PVP but I can see a lot of potential consolidation is also there according to battle-metrics (that we know it doesn't show EPIC accounts and so ranking but we can assume Epic account are spread more or less in the same way, maybe a bit more on The Island and free DLCs maps).

All this looks like more about forcing people buy again the game. Also nobody mentally sane can expect ASA needing the same amount of server resources ARK SE is actually using on Official clusters.

I'd like some clarification, so do owners of OG ark get the upgraded version for free and the bundle only being for those who don't own the game yet? whats the deal?

Nope. Unless something changes. If you want to play ASA, you pay for it and Ark 2. No matter what.

Then you get to buy the expansion packs for the maps.

Then you get to buy the new paid-for mods.

BTW about multiplatform, beside as I said, they took it away from SOTF after.. 1 month because gampead vs mouse&keyboard isn't fair (and on PVP should not make any big difference too), just remember few issues:

    - Each platform has its own deployment rules (Epic/Steam are basically immediate, then there are Sony and MS), which already creates tons of issues when some exploits are discovered working on multiple platform. You literally CANNOT synch multiple platform updates, maybe you can delay easily PC updates but controlling both consoles update is a no go today with Microsoft and Sony deployment and certification methods.

    - Platform account authentication may have their own issues. One thing is like if steam is down: nobody on PC cluster (except egs now? but looks like no more EGS in future despite Epic taking less royalties than Valve..) will get raided etc (in official PVP at least) and if the issue is global WC can just halt the servers to halt decay time and dinos starving. Same apply for other platform (MS and Sony). On multiplatform you cannot mitigate this or you are forced to mitigate a platform issue and take down the game for all.

    - MS Xbox live chat filtering is so insane and stupid (machine learning usage?) that started to censor even numbers and in-game strings... Damn even PC simple filtering doesn't really work well (again it's broken just from the start, simply it cannot work beside basic straightforward filtering, it's math and language science).

What I meant is the issue being they are likely taking a hit on cost for maintaing servers that are empty most of the time. So by never doing it they created a problem. I don't have exact numbers as I am updating ARK right now but if you yake any map accross all patforms you always see 1-2 that are maybe half populated if that and the rest handful to noone on. All those servers can be consolidated. that will free up any storage taken by each instance of the server and consolidate physycal server assets (I say this loosley as I do not know what their setup is nor have I looked if they are hosting on a cloud service which is alsso a cost). Also cleaning DBs from old characters and maybe limiting base sizes and amounts would help storage which also limits costs. My guess is they are paying in someway for limited to unused servers and whatever they can clean from stale characters.

I agree this may be more to get ppl to buy. Maybe they need a large input of money as funding may be getting cut short and from the looks of it even if they did develop Ark2 and decided it was not good and starting fresh or whatever happend they may need the funding for the continued development into 2024.

Hopefully things get worked out. I would hate to have my time wasted like that. But even more for ppl that have spent years.

in mmo game where there are official servers without subscription and other form of revenues except base game and DLC licenses annual or semi-annual server review and consolidation should be important. That's the point: it was never in the last 3 years. And of course consolidation means: you announce what server you close, what you open, giving enough time people to transfer. Nobody would be really mad if they say: hey x,y,z servers will sunset in 3 months because unpopulated, you have 3 months to move and transfer. Of course it should give enough time to affected players and a there should be a way to remember it to new players coming there for any reason... moving a base and tames may take time.. but hell closing all is not a sane solution.

So does this mean player dedicated servers will finally be available on PS4 and PS5, and XBOX for Genesis 1 and 2, Fjordur, and Crystal Isles? Player dedicated servers haven't been a thing since those maps were released.

I think the first thing I'd do is hit up Gen2 and do all the missions before the servers turn to poop.

You'll be waiting till a unknown date in 2024 according to the post to hit up a gen2 server before they turn bad & you'll either have to watch them like a hawk or be able to log in quickly, it really depends on how badly this hurts wildcard.

Studio wildcard must be on drugs if they think I'm buying a game I already own for some useless update. Thanks but I'm fine playing offline solo if I have to. Only super fanboys will be stupid enough to get conned into paying for this nonsense and I doubt there are many of them so good luck with that.

sounds like a Ponzi, i know it's not because you are getting what you already paid for but... a little sus

A Ponzi scheme is an investment fraud that pays existing investors with funds collected from new investors. Ponzi scheme organizers often promise to invest your money and generate high returns with little or no risk. But in many Ponzi schemes, the fraudsters do not invest the money. Instead, they use it to pay those who invested earlier and may keep some for themselves.

This is bs. I know a lot of people on the official servers and some of them have been on there for years. Now studio wildcard is shutting all of that down, and making us pay for a new game? That is a slap in the face to all of us loyal fans that have gone through the growing pains of this game through out the years. The people that already own the game should get a free upgrade to the Ark: Survival Ascended Edition along with the dlc's that they already own. Makes me sick. I have spent years playing Ark. I have spent years having memories that cannot be replaced. Now you are screwing over your fans for some extra money? That is the ultimate disrespect to all of us.

Delaying Ark 2 is probably the best move. So is wiping the official servers (the state of the servers is awful). However, I am really hoping that since we are paying for the game and DLC again to experience it in UE5 (all good), please make sure some of the game-breaking issues are addressed. People should not be losing characters or items/dinos in transfers at this point in the game's development. If people lose things, they should be returned by the support team. Nobody should be able to pillar or foundation an entire map to make the game unplayable for other people. I will tell you right now that if I log in for the first time to ASA and there are pillars and foundations covering the whole map, I will be using Steam's 2 hour refund rule for sure. Having better support for players is also a necessity when asking them to pay for a game again, so please address that. Lastly, I (and many others) are hoping the anti-cheat system will catch and stop duping, it lags and crashes servers. These are all positive changes for a lot of players (some will not be pleased), please ensure that we do not regret trusting your judgement on this.

I really can't believe that they're not only making us rebuy a game that I've already put over 4000 hours into. then they're going to throw away literally years of official time we have put in to support their game.  I'm sooooo disappointed... come on wildcard REALLY
