  • Community Crunch 355: ARK Roadmap, EVO Event, and More!

     welcome_crunch2023-1.png

    Hey there Survivors!

We’re ready to reveal ARK's roadmap for the next year, covering various game-related initiatives, new platforms, and media.  The community’s support continues to be incredibly humbling and inspiring for the team, and that enthusiasm helps drive us toward creating the ultimate survival franchise. What we’ve planned has changed due to many shifting factors, but we believe it will ultimately provide the most fun and excitement for everyone who enjoys ARK.

We know you’re eager for the lowdown on our plans and more transparency regarding what’s behind the curtain, what’s evolved, and what has sprung anew, and we’re ready to share that with you… But before starting, we want you to meet our new friend!

    And now, for the roadmap…

    ark2heading.png

After careful consideration, we have decided to delay the sequel's launch to the end of 2024, when it will still launch exclusively on Xbox, Game Pass, and Windows distribution platforms (Steam/PC). We’ve put much thought into delaying ARK 2 for the betterment of the final product and the team's well-being. This news will be disappointing to many - we feel it too - but we’re confident this heavy decision is the right one.

So why the delay? Our goal is to make ARK 2 the best game it can be and provide a truly exceptional and rewarding experience for players. Unreal Engine 5 is incredibly new technology to us (and all developers), and we aim to use this cutting-edge tech to its fullest potential while creating a game with never-before-achieved scope at Studio Wildcard. As we learn more about the engine and develop the sequel, we have adapted our workflows and adjusted our pipelines to accommodate this new next-generation paradigm, and because of everything that involves, we need more time for development.

We sincerely apologize for this delay and genuinely appreciate your understanding. Your support and passion are vital to us, and we will continue to work intensively to deliver the ultimate next-gen dinosaur survival experience. With that in mind, we do not plan to showcase any gameplay/screenshots/videos of ARK 2 this year; however, we intend to keep you informed and engaged in the development process by regularly showcasing more ARK 2 assets in the months ahead, leading to our gameplay reveal next year.

But! Our desire to push the boundaries of what ARK 2 is on a next-generation platform has led us to the decision to create an intermediary Unreal Engine 5 ARK product utilizing some of the new technology we are building, allowing us to further our mastery of the new engine and ultimately battle-test some of our riskier technical advancements. We’ll gain a deep understanding of how well the rendering and lighting techniques work on console, what performance will be like, whether we can optimize and deliver interactive water and foliage on a widescale basis, and much more. We will deliver cross-platform modding, cross-platform multiplayer & a new account system, informing us about other changes we should consider for ARK 2. Due to the scope of all the technical and QOL changes required for such a next-gen experience, it is not feasible to make this new version of ARK backward compatible, which led us to conclude that this would need to be a separate product.

We also recognize that ARK 2 has some pretty significant design changes from the original game, which may not make it as appealing to everyone (looking at you, Souls-like combat, primitive-only weaponry, and strict third-person mechanics – and an overall “very serious” tone), which is why we feel it is essential to provide players with a fully next-gen version of the original experience to ensure that fans can continue to enjoy the ARK they know for years to come.

We’re thrilled to share this new ARK journey with you this year -- bringing players from PC, Xbox, and PlayStation together in a next-generation version of the game you love, topped off with revolutionary cross-platform modding.

ARK: Survival Ascended is a next-generation remaster of our beloved ARK: Survival Evolved, harnessing the power of Unreal Engine 5. It will be released on Xbox Series S/X, PC (Windows/Steam), and PlayStation 5 by the end of August 2023. The base game will include The Island, SOTF, and all the “Non-Canon” DLC maps (which will be added to ASA over time).

Xbox Series S/X and PC players will only be able to get it via an ultimate-value bundle known as the ARK Respawned Bundle. This bundle includes ownership of both ARK: Survival Ascended AND ARK 2 and will be priced at $49.99. This bundle will be available to purchase from the end of August for up to 1 year (after which ARK: Survival Ascended and ARK 2 will be sold separately). Additionally, the bundle will provide players access to an exclusive 1-month closed-beta to ARK 2 in 2024 before the rest of the general public can play ARK 2.

PlayStation 5 users will be able to get their hands on ARK: Survival Ascended as a standalone next-gen game at launch in August 2023 for $39.99.

All the expansion packs will be sold separately on all platforms:

    • $19.99 for Explorer’s Pass, which includes Scorched Earth, Aberration (Q4 2023), and Extinction (Q1 2024).
    • $19.99 for Genesis Pass, which includes Genesis Part 1 (Q1 2024) and Genesis Part 2 (Q2 2024).

At ARK: Survival Ascended’s launch, players will have access to The Island, Scorched Earth, and the new revamped game mode, Survival of the Fittest.

In addition to many other new features, ARK: Survival Ascended will feature the following improvements and enhancements:

    • Unreal Engine 5 Overhaul with Nanite, Lumen and RTXDI
    • Dynamic Water
    • Interactive Foliage
    • Unreal Engine 5 performance gains: instanced-rendering (large-bases etc.), threaded server networking, and native physics engine
    • Cross-platform Multiplayer
      • This includes cross-platform accounts and cross-progression, cross-voice chat & friends, etc. No matter what platform you start playing on, you can access your account, character, dinos, and items on a different platform for the ultimate cross-platform experience.
    • Cross-platform Modding
      • We recognize the power of giving players the tools and capability to define their survival experience, so we want to take cross-platform one step further by working with  Overwolf  to introduce an industry-first cross-platform modding experience where mods created on PC are delivered directly to end-users’ consoles from a custom modding backend.
      • The modding capability will include FULL blueprinting support ;), stacked mods, and maps. Everything that is currently possible on the Steam version of ARK: Survival Evolved and more will be possible on the new system and be available for end-users to play on consoles in all modes.
      • Premium Mods: Reviewed by Overwolf and Wildcard for quality control and value, Mod authors will optionally be able to specify price points for their Mods (with 50% of the price point going to the Mod author). This is necessary to pay for the custom infrastructure required for Overwolf to support, administrate, and deliver Mods to the console.
      • We plan on streamlining the process of upgrading legacy ARK: Survival Evolved mods to the next-generation platform. We plan to reach out to current/former sponsored modders in preparation for the launch of ASA with the tools they need to get their mods ready before the launch.
    • Cross-platform Anti-Cheat
    • Survival of the Fittest
      • SOTF will be integrated into the main product as a new fully-supported game mode. It will have a dedicated team that will continue to work on more gameplay changes, mechanical improvements, quality of life, maps, and balance adjustments. The initial mode will be revamped with an exclusive ARK: Survival Ascended update, including:
        • Upgraded to Unreal Engine 5 with complete cross-platform and cross-modding support (the SOTF UE5 source content will be released for modders to utilize as they wish within ASA)
        • Scorched Earth SOTF Map
        • Matchmaking queue
        • Character and Creature customization with cosmetics
        • Local Lobby where you can group up with your friends, configure the look of your survivor and dinos, and queue up for lobbies together
        • Lots of bug-fixes and balance and functionality improvements
    • Art Assets are being upgraded throughout the entire game
    • Newly-designed holiday events take advantage of the next-gen pipeline, released as mods, so they’re always available to play!
    • New content, QOL improvements, balance, and gameplay changes, including but not limited to:
      • Updated mini-map (pan, zoom, pings, etc – similar to the SOTF mini-map)
      • New structures (display cases, smaller TEK Teleporters) & building QOL improvements (snap fixes, increased foundation support, foundation height adjustments, and more)
      • Queueing System
      • New third-person camera (with the option to opt out)
      • Directional Sprinting and Walking
      • Ping system
      • Gamepad cursor
      • Chibi Slot and Skins Tab
      • Balance passes (e.g. Cave Entrances, MEKs, Aberration Creatures, more breedable creatures, etc)
      • …and more! (seriously, a lot more, this list isn’t exhaustive, but it’ll get super long if we list everything, and there’s more we’ll decide to do between now and launch too)

    LiveOperationssubheading.png

We understand there will be questions regarding LiveOps for the product, so we’ll review some key areas now.

    • Final Content Update: In June for ARK’s 8th Anniversary, we’ll release ARK: Survival Evolved’s final content update, which includes the fan-voted Rhyniognatha!
    • Cross-platform: It’s important to note that ARK: Survival Evolved (ARK:SE) and ARK: Survival Ascended (ASA) will coexist but will not support crossplay between the two games. ASA will have undergone profound functional changes which prevent it from being compatible with the previous game.
    • Holiday Events: We plan to develop and release ASA-exclusive holiday content that takes advantage of the next-gen pipeline released in mods, so they’re always available to play!
    • Official Servers: With the launch of ASA at the end of August, we will be taking down all Official Servers on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC for ARK: Survival Evolved – at that time, the final save-datas from the ARK: Survival Evolved Official Servers will be uploaded for players to re-host on their own servers or play in singleplayer/non-dedi, as well as slightly earlier snapshots. You will still be able to play on single-player, non-dedicated, player-dedicated, and unofficial servers. ARK: Survival Ascended will have its own fully supported Official Network for all platforms.
    • Feature Sunset: With the launch of ASA, we will be ending official support for Primitive+, Split Screen, and Procedurally Generated Maps. These aspects of the game will not be ported to the new Unreal Engine 5 version.
    • We will look into releasing the source files for Primitive+ for those that wish to repurpose aspects of it for mods.
    • ARK: Survival Ascended Updates: The remaster will have regular updates to resolve bugs, introduce new content, balance changes, and quality-of-life improvements for years to come.
    • ARK: Survival Evolved Updates: will be limited to crashes and critical bug fixes.

We plan to release a new canonical-story expansion pack for ARK: Survival Ascended that will be available in Q4 2023. This DLC will feature four new creatures, which we’ll share more details about later this year!

    ARK_Ultimate_Bundle_2560x1440_V05.jpg

ARK: Ultimate Survivor Edition has been off to a great start on Nintendo Switch. The insightful crew at Digital Foundry called it "one of the most radical improvements in game quality (they've) ever seen."

So far, we've launched Scorched Earth, Aberration, and Ragnarok, with Extinction coming on April 11th. Our current estimated timeline for the rest of our significant releases is as follows:

    • April 2023 - Extinction
    • May 2023 - Small Tribes servers
    • June 2023 - Genesis Part 1
    • October 2023 - Genesis Part 2
    • Winter 2023 into 2024 - Remaining community maps

Spring has been an exciting time on the platform, with the release of the Carcharodontosaurus now roaming around The Island and Ragnarok. Eggcellent Adventure begins on April 3rd, bringing this full event to players on Nintendo Switch for the first time. Lest we forget ARK: Dinosaur Discovery, which also saw a content update to v1.5, recently adding a full-featured in-game map and numerous gameplay improvements. As a reminder, ARK: Dinosaur Discovery is a separate download available for FREE to all digital owners of ARK on Nintendo Switch.

Finally, we are happy to welcome a swath of new players from Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan & South Korea. Both titles are now available locally on Nintendo Switch in those regions from our partners at Spike Chunsoft.

    arkmobilerevamp.png

We have some important news for Mobile Survivors! At the year's end, we anticipate a relaunch of ARK: Mobile as a completely revamped product. It will be based on a graphically improved version of the Switch codebase due to the increased power generally available with mobile devices and include new Switch features and content and mobile-specific changes. We plan to release all the expansion packs and non-cannon maps over time into this revamped version, and from that point onwards, ARK: Mobile will have its product lifecycle and roadmap.

ARK: The Animated Series has completed the animation and cast recordings of all its 14 initial episodes, which are currently in post-production (VFX, sound mix, etc.). We're delighted with how the show turned out -- it's an epic melodramatic love letter to dinosaurs, fantasy/sci-fi, and of course ARK itself -- though we have not placed it yet with any platform, hence the lack of news in that area. So as soon as there's more to report, we will let you know!

Thank you everyone for reading through this substantial write-up, and stay tuned for more information on the ARK: Survival Ascended in the months ahead toward its August launch!

The roadmap says it won't be added to ASA.

Sorry but i think that's is a normal Process when they bring a Remasterd Version of a Server Base Game , take down the Server for the Old Version and give new ones to the new Version ... also they say you can get the Savefiles for a Privat Server when you will play Ark Se and not ASA

Sadly since they won't be updating SE after June, the save file won't do us very much good. how often do things break in Ark? (often) and with no updates the private servers won't last very long. We have had one in the past. Plus, not even going to mention single player since it just doesn't have the same vibe or other people. As much as I will miss our dinos.. the save file is more like a snapshot of what was. And will never be again.

there is a reason why we have client and servers: to decouple code. Server should not totally care about your graphics engine backend. graphics computations are never done on server for games.

there is no reason to literally kill an entire game for another that it doesn't exists yet and that will not get magically all players buying it and playing it on new servers ( that will face just The Island and MAYBE Scorched Earth).

Until ASE is still profitable (ie: it sells well) they should just keep the server running. If we have too many servers running than let them make a serious server review and allow players to migrate from unpopulated servers to close to others. Goddamn, this is done even on monthly paid subscriptions MMOs!

In my opinion this was a bad move on Wildcard's part. You've just alienated and closed off a massive portion of your fan base, which in the long run will cost you money in the end. The only thing that you've successfully done is drive away your loyal fan base that has been with you since 2015. I have spent over $200 on three accounts buying all the DLC's and the main game so my family and I can play together as well as with friends thatI bring over to introduce to the game which brings you revenue. After your announcement about the road map of ark, I am no longer going to be a loyal fan and the thousands of people that I've talked to feel the same way. The only thing that you actually done was cost yourself the money that you're trying to make. How can you loyal fans trust you that in another five years when a new Unreal Engine is released that you don't do the entire thing all over again. We cannot!!!!!!

I could have understood having to just paid the money to purchase the new game coupled with the new release of ark survival ascendant, but that should include all the DLC's for the old ark game. But charging for the original game along with the new game that hasn't even come out yet and has had three years of delays is totally unacceptable. Not to mention now having to rebuy all the DLC's once again. On behalf of fans everywhere your company has signed its own death warrant.

    .... ha scritto:
Ce ne sarà un altro? XD
    Sia community che crunch?

hmmm actually right observation.... Comunity has now had the culmination of disappointment from WC...

even if hope is in vain, we still want to hope for April Fools' Day (at least they take it as an excuse to announce a few steps back about what they decided to do).

If they remained firm on their decisions, it would be correct to announce a first backup of rescues for the weekend following Easter (or the end of the month for example), so that anyone has about ten days to reorganise/group their current things and organize their Clusters immediately (it would also give some time to organize them, remaining in contact with the people of the servers of origin during the movements of the same); and then the second block of saves when the Servers are closed. <-- This is for those who have now lost the desire to continue but would only wait for these months of "only refresh timer" to at least get the save data.

The basic problem remains that the Survivors on Console (both XBox & PS) will not be able to download the first or other Save Data except by renting their own servers (paid for each single server); however, I think that if they released the Rescues immediately: within a month we will see hundreds of Servers emptied whose Players have already been able to recreate their own clusters with what they had worked hard for and with Friends&Against, soon several Official Servers will have ZERO daily accesses for a whole week and they would also have justification for being closed immediately, as a consequence of things (and now also thanks to our choices) the really active servers in five months would be very few on all platforms, personally they would deserve to have the possibility to remain active (..regardless..) but then we can also think of compromises and alternative solutions for us.

--- the transition to NextGen is certainly a great step, I find it correct however not to completely cut out those who "grew up with us" on PS4-XBoxOne at least in the Original ARK:SE version (""don't mention the fact that it's on sale in Store without any notice of closure of the Servers""), if my hypothesis that giving the first Backup Data now will lead to a "natural" emptying of most of the Servers of all platforms, the situation in five months would allow the maintenance of a minimal part of Servers (for example a Single Official Cluster of only two maps per type = 24 x 2 PVE/PVP = 48 servers) in favor of a recovery of 99% of all the others, I'm looking at the Server Official Pve screen + Pvp of XBox which counts 2381 + 57 Legacy and I assume the same on PC and PS therefore saying it in round numbers on 7500 Servers active today, being able to leave 150 active on the three platforms is equivalent to only 2% (I bet that even if it were 15% it would be a good compromise for everyone), not least considering that ASA will start with only two maps (TI & TheCenter, the others later as it is going on the Switch, right?) and let's combine it with the fact that ARK:SE suffered on the stability of the Servers, I suppose that in ASA it would be recommended to open only "a few but good" ones and not many and buggy ones...

--- The other problem caused by the closure of the Serers concerns the transfer of everyone's years of work: yes, this is precisely one of the two daggers that hurt!! What's the other dagger? well, anyone who already has ARK would be happy and proud to pay an additional fee for an upgrade of our game, anyone here spends ten (even twenty) dollars to further "enhance" those already spent on the game and DLC, always at provided we can maintain our current progress, I bet it would also spur our advertising to new Buyers added to all the expected others. It is evident that (with the will to do so) there is certainly the possibility of solutions that are comfortable for everyone (WC & Community & ARK) but the choice is targeted, such a hard cut of legs can (?) financially achieve the goal in the short term term

.......but you have created a Community of almost a Decade......now ready to support you in evil for good for as many years........

are you really preferring the income (? maybe?) STARTING "YOU" AGAIN FROM SCRATCH and with "let's try to inflate today's portfolio rather than maintain an investment with solid foundations" mentality?

-----> What I hope is that at least EVERYONE OF WC has read every single response to this CC <---

just a sample about shutdown official is hurting for real your community and potential costumer: the Official PVE server where I mainly play since almost 3 years (and I wanna remember: 2 accounts with full game, season passes included) was always in the last 6 months in the top 5 PVE official ranking according to metacritics (and so not counting EGS playerbase): we went for being the first or second ranked official PVE server according to battlemetrics to be like the 71st or so... in a week. And despite this there were still new players joining last night wanting to start playing and not aware you will kill us all in August (but hell, the steam page advertise ASE still as an mmo game).

Only thing we can do to help these players is to keep the Steam reviews up to date and tell them to not start on official right now if they want to keep playing. Gladly will change the review again if Wildcard decides not to kill all official servers in August. My PVE Server is only full of newbies right now, too. Regulars just logging in once a week to keep the base alive. Me as well. Not going to breed anything if it's dead by the end of August. (yes I know it's only pixels, but they're MY pixels.)

Will primitive plus be included with the payed upgrade or for the primitive plus community there is no point paying for the upgrade, as we never play the crap tek version.

primitive plus is as dead as official primitive is. won´t be continued

UNREAL GUYS  WC you are unbelievable.  Shut down the servers to force game play on a game that we already own. Can't wait.  Look forward to it. Can't wait to log into another game and have the memory hit me of this epic launch idea.  Why bother with the saves though? You could've charged for those.  Gotta think through for the cash grab. Look forward to the fire. Sorry folks but if you played Ark for any length of time you know this isn't a surprise is it?

Wow! I am super excited! It's everything I wanted. ARK1 in Unreal 5, cross platform, I am just blown away. It doesn't bother me that it's a paid upgrade. It's fair. Who expects the developers to work for free anyway? I was never really too excited about the plans for ARK2, but I will give it a chance.

Anyway, thank you Wildcard! This is amazing!

The entitlement of some people in this thread is staggering. Just because it's a remaster/remake doesn't mean that it's for free. If you feel like the price is too high, wait until it goes on sale 🤷‍♂️ I can't wait to wipe my current ARK server and reload it with ASA. Yes it means starting from scratch, but with the new graphics I want to start from scratch and experience it all over again.

The cause of the problem is not WC but the shady publisher of ark Snail Games that is know to milk cash form games and just abandon them when they are no longer worth the trouble. Some examples of those milked games published by snail games are Atlas, Dark and Light, Last Oasis and PixArk to name a few.

To clarify Snail Games is just forcing WC to monetise ark as much as possible because it is one of their last sorce of revenue, as all the other games they have published died off completely or are just not providing enough money.

That's literally the purpose of a business, making money.

Thanks Wildcard, seems nice but I'll be sticking with my dedicated cluster for ASE.

At least until we see some ACTUAL content.

This double-back on promises made before you understood the scope of the engine overhaul is just poor foresight and sad.

Good luck, I've seen companies shoot themselves in the foot before but this is above and beyond.

Ultimately, I'm more disappointed than anything since I've stuck with you and Ark since Alpha days. I've championed this game and got several friends to buy it, but will NOT be encouraging ASA or Ark 2 based on this update. ASE was a unique and fun game, and that is where I will stay.

I think WC holds some responsibility in this too. From the beginning they have operated from a grey area. WC kind of wants the old gamers to leave so they can bring in the new pay-to-play gamers, sell them skins we earned PLAYING THE ACTUAL EVENTS FOR YEARS. All Dev's, not just WC lack creative thinking to make MT's that are useful services to gamers. It's always just skins/cosmetics... I for one need goals to work for in games. I don't mind paying for a service that provides function for the players like no decay timers or better paid servers.

    Best they could do in 8 years is;

-The rifle still doesn't reload properly.

-Lose more dinos/gear to crashing and transfers than playing the game.

    -Characters progress lost in transfer.

Gamers have been offering paid subscriptions or types of MT's for years. Instead, they want to reset character progress and pay to play the 3rd time around. That's not Snail. That's all WC. All the personal real lifetime we invest in their product is just a 'game' to them. I question if I will support this change. Maybe just finish the game before Aug and then post how much I get done Not playing ASA over the next 8 years of my life. Go back to no commitment gaming.

Just ask yourself this before you download ASA and invest your money and priceless time.

Should I get (or finish) a degree in 'insert passion here' or re-play a remaster over the next 8 years?

Which brings up, has a remaster ever saved or renewed a games player base for years to come, aren't they just short-lived trips down memory lane?

The literal producer of the game said it was going to be free you self righteous koont. You need only look at Jeremy Stieglitz's twitter page. Get all the facts before you come in swinging at everyone else.

This 'entitlement' that you speak of is not staggering it is natural human reaction, firstly WE were told it would be a free upgrade , that changed kinda obvious, HOWEVER the frikking price and closure of current ase servers is a kick in the nads, too much for a game we ALREADY own and the dam dlc its virtually the SAME price as ase right now lol and all its getting is a 'few upgrades and a facelift' (of which HOW MANY of them will make it in august????).

Plus you joined 1 hour ago to stoke the flames of entitlement I see ..... its much more than that, really much more, WC and snail could have added something else for 'us' to spend money on to have a profit incoming heck skins shop etc think fortnite / rust etc, and if u have read all 25 pages then you would defiantly have understood the anger / reasoning behind all this from the players, an mmo will try its hardest to NOT kill its fanbase whereas here we see the opposite.

Or I am arguing with a bot lol

The funniest thing about that guy's argument is saying "I want to start from scratch and experience it all over again". Like what? My brother in Christ, you can do that with baseline AsE if you just delete your character. He's so npc brained that he both forgot that's an option and failed to realize not everyone wants to just build from zero, especially if they've had the same setup for a while. A lot of players that have been on since the game came out were likely younger and had more free time at their disposal then that isn't available now.
