  • Community Crunch 355: ARK Roadmap, EVO Event, and More!

     welcome_crunch2023-1.png

    Hey there Survivors!

We’re ready to reveal ARK's roadmap for the next year, covering various game-related initiatives, new platforms, and media.  The community’s support continues to be incredibly humbling and inspiring for the team, and that enthusiasm helps drive us toward creating the ultimate survival franchise. What we’ve planned has changed due to many shifting factors, but we believe it will ultimately provide the most fun and excitement for everyone who enjoys ARK.

We know you’re eager for the lowdown on our plans and more transparency regarding what’s behind the curtain, what’s evolved, and what has sprung anew, and we’re ready to share that with you… But before starting, we want you to meet our new friend!

    And now, for the roadmap…

    ark2heading.png

After careful consideration, we have decided to delay the sequel's launch to the end of 2024, when it will still launch exclusively on Xbox, Game Pass, and Windows distribution platforms (Steam/PC). We’ve put much thought into delaying ARK 2 for the betterment of the final product and the team's well-being. This news will be disappointing to many - we feel it too - but we’re confident this heavy decision is the right one.

So why the delay? Our goal is to make ARK 2 the best game it can be and provide a truly exceptional and rewarding experience for players. Unreal Engine 5 is incredibly new technology to us (and all developers), and we aim to use this cutting-edge tech to its fullest potential while creating a game with never-before-achieved scope at Studio Wildcard. As we learn more about the engine and develop the sequel, we have adapted our workflows and adjusted our pipelines to accommodate this new next-generation paradigm, and because of everything that involves, we need more time for development.

We sincerely apologize for this delay and genuinely appreciate your understanding. Your support and passion are vital to us, and we will continue to work intensively to deliver the ultimate next-gen dinosaur survival experience. With that in mind, we do not plan to showcase any gameplay/screenshots/videos of ARK 2 this year; however, we intend to keep you informed and engaged in the development process by regularly showcasing more ARK 2 assets in the months ahead, leading to our gameplay reveal next year.

But! Our desire to push the boundaries of what ARK 2 is on a next-generation platform has led us to the decision to create an intermediary Unreal Engine 5 ARK product utilizing some of the new technology we are building, allowing us to further our mastery of the new engine and ultimately battle-test some of our riskier technical advancements. We’ll gain a deep understanding of how well the rendering and lighting techniques work on console, what performance will be like, whether we can optimize and deliver interactive water and foliage on a widescale basis, and much more. We will deliver cross-platform modding, cross-platform multiplayer & a new account system, informing us about other changes we should consider for ARK 2. Due to the scope of all the technical and QOL changes required for such a next-gen experience, it is not feasible to make this new version of ARK backward compatible, which led us to conclude that this would need to be a separate product.

We also recognize that ARK 2 has some pretty significant design changes from the original game, which may not make it as appealing to everyone (looking at you, Souls-like combat, primitive-only weaponry, and strict third-person mechanics – and an overall “very serious” tone), which is why we feel it is essential to provide players with a fully next-gen version of the original experience to ensure that fans can continue to enjoy the ARK they know for years to come.

We’re thrilled to share this new ARK journey with you this year -- bringing players from PC, Xbox, and PlayStation together in a next-generation version of the game you love, topped off with revolutionary cross-platform modding.

ARK: Survival Ascended is a next-generation remaster of our beloved ARK: Survival Evolved, harnessing the power of Unreal Engine 5. It will be released on Xbox Series S/X, PC (Windows/Steam), and PlayStation 5 by the end of August 2023. The base game will include The Island, SOTF, and all the “Non-Canon” DLC maps (which will be added to ASA over time).

Xbox Series S/X and PC players will only be able to get it via an ultimate-value bundle known as the ARK Respawned Bundle. This bundle includes ownership of both ARK: Survival Ascended AND ARK 2 and will be priced at $49.99. This bundle will be available to purchase from the end of August for up to 1 year (after which ARK: Survival Ascended and ARK 2 will be sold separately). Additionally, the bundle will provide players access to an exclusive 1-month closed-beta to ARK 2 in 2024 before the rest of the general public can play ARK 2.

PlayStation 5 users will be able to get their hands on ARK: Survival Ascended as a standalone next-gen game at launch in August 2023 for $39.99.

All the expansion packs will be sold separately on all platforms:

    • $19.99 for Explorer’s Pass, which includes Scorched Earth, Aberration (Q4 2023), and Extinction (Q1 2024).
    • $19.99 for Genesis Pass, which includes Genesis Part 1 (Q1 2024) and Genesis Part 2 (Q2 2024).

At ARK: Survival Ascended’s launch, players will have access to The Island, Scorched Earth, and the new revamped game mode, Survival of the Fittest.

In addition to many other new features, ARK: Survival Ascended will feature the following improvements and enhancements:

    • Unreal Engine 5 Overhaul with Nanite, Lumen and RTXDI
    • Dynamic Water
    • Interactive Foliage
    • Unreal Engine 5 performance gains: instanced-rendering (large-bases etc.), threaded server networking, and native physics engine
    • Cross-platform Multiplayer
      • This includes cross-platform accounts and cross-progression, cross-voice chat & friends, etc. No matter what platform you start playing on, you can access your account, character, dinos, and items on a different platform for the ultimate cross-platform experience.
    • Cross-platform Modding
      • We recognize the power of giving players the tools and capability to define their survival experience, so we want to take cross-platform one step further by working with  Overwolf  to introduce an industry-first cross-platform modding experience where mods created on PC are delivered directly to end-users’ consoles from a custom modding backend.
      • The modding capability will include FULL blueprinting support ;), stacked mods, and maps. Everything that is currently possible on the Steam version of ARK: Survival Evolved and more will be possible on the new system and be available for end-users to play on consoles in all modes.
      • Premium Mods: Reviewed by Overwolf and Wildcard for quality control and value, Mod authors will optionally be able to specify price points for their Mods (with 50% of the price point going to the Mod author). This is necessary to pay for the custom infrastructure required for Overwolf to support, administrate, and deliver Mods to the console.
      • We plan on streamlining the process of upgrading legacy ARK: Survival Evolved mods to the next-generation platform. We plan to reach out to current/former sponsored modders in preparation for the launch of ASA with the tools they need to get their mods ready before the launch.
    • Cross-platform Anti-Cheat
    • Survival of the Fittest
      • SOTF will be integrated into the main product as a new fully-supported game mode. It will have a dedicated team that will continue to work on more gameplay changes, mechanical improvements, quality of life, maps, and balance adjustments. The initial mode will be revamped with an exclusive ARK: Survival Ascended update, including:
        • Upgraded to Unreal Engine 5 with complete cross-platform and cross-modding support (the SOTF UE5 source content will be released for modders to utilize as they wish within ASA)
        • Scorched Earth SOTF Map
        • Matchmaking queue
        • Character and Creature customization with cosmetics
        • Local Lobby where you can group up with your friends, configure the look of your survivor and dinos, and queue up for lobbies together
        • Lots of bug-fixes and balance and functionality improvements
    • Art Assets are being upgraded throughout the entire game
    • Newly-designed holiday events take advantage of the next-gen pipeline, released as mods, so they’re always available to play!
    • New content, QOL improvements, balance, and gameplay changes, including but not limited to:
      • Updated mini-map (pan, zoom, pings, etc – similar to the SOTF mini-map)
      • New structures (display cases, smaller TEK Teleporters) & building QOL improvements (snap fixes, increased foundation support, foundation height adjustments, and more)
      • Queueing System
      • New third-person camera (with the option to opt out)
      • Directional Sprinting and Walking
      • Ping system
      • Gamepad cursor
      • Chibi Slot and Skins Tab
      • Balance passes (e.g. Cave Entrances, MEKs, Aberration Creatures, more breedable creatures, etc)
      • …and more! (seriously, a lot more, this list isn’t exhaustive, but it’ll get super long if we list everything, and there’s more we’ll decide to do between now and launch too)

    LiveOperationssubheading.png

We understand there will be questions regarding LiveOps for the product, so we’ll review some key areas now.

    • Final Content Update: In June for ARK’s 8th Anniversary, we’ll release ARK: Survival Evolved’s final content update, which includes the fan-voted Rhyniognatha!
    • Cross-platform: It’s important to note that ARK: Survival Evolved (ARK:SE) and ARK: Survival Ascended (ASA) will coexist but will not support crossplay between the two games. ASA will have undergone profound functional changes which prevent it from being compatible with the previous game.
    • Holiday Events: We plan to develop and release ASA-exclusive holiday content that takes advantage of the next-gen pipeline released in mods, so they’re always available to play!
    • Official Servers: With the launch of ASA at the end of August, we will be taking down all Official Servers on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC for ARK: Survival Evolved – at that time, the final save-datas from the ARK: Survival Evolved Official Servers will be uploaded for players to re-host on their own servers or play in singleplayer/non-dedi, as well as slightly earlier snapshots. You will still be able to play on single-player, non-dedicated, player-dedicated, and unofficial servers. ARK: Survival Ascended will have its own fully supported Official Network for all platforms.
    • Feature Sunset: With the launch of ASA, we will be ending official support for Primitive+, Split Screen, and Procedurally Generated Maps. These aspects of the game will not be ported to the new Unreal Engine 5 version.
    • We will look into releasing the source files for Primitive+ for those that wish to repurpose aspects of it for mods.
    • ARK: Survival Ascended Updates: The remaster will have regular updates to resolve bugs, introduce new content, balance changes, and quality-of-life improvements for years to come.
    • ARK: Survival Evolved Updates: will be limited to crashes and critical bug fixes.

We plan to release a new canonical-story expansion pack for ARK: Survival Ascended that will be available in Q4 2023. This DLC will feature four new creatures, which we’ll share more details about later this year!

    ARK_Ultimate_Bundle_2560x1440_V05.jpg

ARK: Ultimate Survivor Edition has been off to a great start on Nintendo Switch. The insightful crew at Digital Foundry called it "one of the most radical improvements in game quality (they've) ever seen."

So far, we've launched Scorched Earth, Aberration, and Ragnarok, with Extinction coming on April 11th. Our current estimated timeline for the rest of our significant releases is as follows:

    • April 2023 - Extinction
    • May 2023 - Small Tribes servers
    • June 2023 - Genesis Part 1
    • October 2023 - Genesis Part 2
    • Winter 2023 into 2024 - Remaining community maps

Spring has been an exciting time on the platform, with the release of the Carcharodontosaurus now roaming around The Island and Ragnarok. Eggcellent Adventure begins on April 3rd, bringing this full event to players on Nintendo Switch for the first time. Lest we forget ARK: Dinosaur Discovery, which also saw a content update to v1.5, recently adding a full-featured in-game map and numerous gameplay improvements. As a reminder, ARK: Dinosaur Discovery is a separate download available for FREE to all digital owners of ARK on Nintendo Switch.

Finally, we are happy to welcome a swath of new players from Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan & South Korea. Both titles are now available locally on Nintendo Switch in those regions from our partners at Spike Chunsoft.

    arkmobilerevamp.png

We have some important news for Mobile Survivors! At the year's end, we anticipate a relaunch of ARK: Mobile as a completely revamped product. It will be based on a graphically improved version of the Switch codebase due to the increased power generally available with mobile devices and include new Switch features and content and mobile-specific changes. We plan to release all the expansion packs and non-cannon maps over time into this revamped version, and from that point onwards, ARK: Mobile will have its product lifecycle and roadmap.

ARK: The Animated Series has completed the animation and cast recordings of all its 14 initial episodes, which are currently in post-production (VFX, sound mix, etc.). We're delighted with how the show turned out -- it's an epic melodramatic love letter to dinosaurs, fantasy/sci-fi, and of course ARK itself -- though we have not placed it yet with any platform, hence the lack of news in that area. So as soon as there's more to report, we will let you know!

Thank you everyone for reading through this substantial write-up, and stay tuned for more information on the ARK: Survival Ascended in the months ahead toward its August launch!

This comment is referred to everyone blaming WC for this.

The cause of the problem is not WC but the shady publisher of ark Snail Games that is know to milk cash form games and just abandon them when they are no longer worth the trouble. Some examples of those milked games published by snail games are Atlas, Dark and Light, Last Oasis and PixArk to name a few.

To clarify Snail Games is just forcing WC to monetise ark as much as possible because it is one of their last sorce of revenue, as all the other games they have published died off completely or are just not providing enough money.

I don’t see anything about PS5. Will ARK2 be available for the PS5? Is it for sure ASA will be available for PS5 in August? I can’t believe my son and I are the only PS5 players out there, I really wish I could get an answer,  good or bad from the people building the game not the people speculating. Please 🥹

Ark2 will be out on PS when the PS6 is out. Two more yrs minimum for XBOX/PC release. 1-2yr of exclusivity and content work and another 1-2yrs for a PS version just like Ark1 took to be on PS4. So, yeah...

I still remember their subsidiary stating Atlas would release on PS and PS5 would get next gen Ark upgrade like the Xbox 2yrs ago...never happened.

I have to disagree. When you make a deal with the devil for money, you can't be considered blameless afterwards when s** hits the fan. They're joined at the hip for many years now and profited quite alot. They both share the blame just like they share profits, but you don't blame individual people who are not the leadership decision makers in both companies

I think I speak for the majority of the players when I say: I wont buy it. It can be difficult to determine the value of a game without experiencing it firsthand. Relying solely on plain words or reviews can be risky, as everyone's tastes and preferences are different. And even if the game is going to be good and full of wanders, I would still reconsider  buying it, especially the DLCs which I already played and finished them. I wont pay for the same thing twice just because you would add 2-3 new items or 2-3 new dinos for that DLC. I really hope you that you watch the comment section and every youtuber of Ark that exist, because nobody, really nobody is happy with the decision you took.

    People, Grow Up.

Yes it sucks the upgrade was initially mentioned as free but is now charged, yes not everyone may like Ark 2, outgrowing old systems sucks, etc... However, this is all a bunch of impulsive wildfire rage without deep thought on it. A company especially one owned by another needs profit function and ark hasn't monetized anything new in almost TWO YEARS since Gensis part 2 because survival of the fittest has existed forever even if they did recently start adjusting on it. Something had to happen eventually if they were going to keep providing.

    The Charged "upgrade"

If you read in full detail they are NOT just porting the game over to UE5 entirely new features are being added, this is new work, which oh boy the team in charge of needs paid for. We're going to be able to keep our progess across platforms, the water and foliage is being revamped, rendering is being improved, Anti-cheat is expanding to cross platform, they're also reaching out to/helping modders adjust to ASA so that WE don't have to wait weeks to months for those mods to be converted. This is also just what they've told us about, and keep in mind some of this needs done for EVERY map, half of which are FREE because the FREE maps we've been getting are the NON CANON MAPS.

They're literally giving us ark 2 and it's closed beta for TEN DOLLARS for a year after the launch of ASA, which means currently by PLAN ark 2 will be obtainable for that same price for a while after official launch. Which means they'd be losing money on either ASA or ARK 2 when someone decides they like both.

Also the DLC's minus Gensis are a discount because each was launched and sold on it's own initially but now like they did at the end of initial ark they're bundling them for ASA, for the same price they once sold them alone for.

It's also pretty clear their intention is to bring Ark Survival Evolved into the future as the "real Ark 2" picking it back up properly, while Ark 2 is Ark 2 in the same way Back 4 Blood is Left4dead3. However, if people keep up this path, all we're going to do is lose Ark likely because they won't be able to afford to do it.

If you look at other ue5 game developers like the trailer of city skylines you wil laugh at ARK 2 ue5 lol 😂 and other game developers do effort like elder scrolls Skyrim now that ark can learn from. Why not launch ark ASA earlier and look at those who played allot of hours and give us a free pass.

Let me see if I can put this full price update in perspective for all the Ark fans out there. Ark survival evolved came orinn March 2015 (according to Wikipedia) give or take. Other popular games in 2015 were:

    Witcher 3

    COD: Black Ops III

    Fallout 4

    Halo 5

    Mortal Kombat X

    Final Fantasy XIV

    Assassin's Creed Syndicate

Now how many of you folks have had to pay full price for an updated version of those games? And how many of those updates let you take your original character with you?  I am fine with paying full price for a new version of Ark. Let Wildcard make some money on a game I have enjoyed for years.

I kind of expected the closing of servers as they did with the first rendition by I had thought it would be during the release of Ark 2.  Like others, prior to the first time they did this, I put many hours/days of work and sleepless nights building up what I had.  Now, once again, Wildcard is simply wiping away mints and years of work and enjoyment.

I've been loyal and supportive, 2 paid accounts both with all the paid DLC's.  Simply giving me the server files so I can continue to either host my own servers and play alone isn't cutting it this time.  I don't paly Ark to play alone, if I wanted that I would have never began to play ark in the first place.

I've owned Conan since it released and never got to play it because of the time I had invested in Ark and the enjoyment I received.

So now I'm re-installing Conan to give it a chance.  Reasons?  Well, now I have to buy ARK again and the DLC's I've already paid for?  I can understand Wildcard doing this on Ark 2 drop, but not for a game I haven't seen yet nor will even know if I like what they are doing I Ark 2.

Don't get me wrong, I knew this was coming once Wildcard started looking at Ark 2, and I knew time in this current development was on a count down click to go poof like the previous.  What I didn't expect is for Wildcard to do it this way and to cause this mess with their loyal fan base which I might add, looks to be bailing on Ark.  I may be one of them.

    Good going Wildcard!

Now how many of you folks have had to pay full price for an updated version of those games? And how many of those updates let you take your original character with you?  I am fine with paying full price for a new version of Ark. Let Wildcard make some money on a game I have enjoyed for years.

I have 13600 + gametime in the ark. I restarted whole game 4 or 5 times.  So yes. My favorite game. But i feel this is  hustle. So yes. I restart again, but in single player.  I played earlier in legacy server. Left that, becouze anything happened wildcard said to me "Legacy deprecated server, not her jobs" Ok, then i started again. The difference is,  more people play that server, and official more lagg then Legacy. Nothing more.  I tryed to play gen 2 servers.  All gen 2 server is trash. 10-16 hrs offline from 24 hrs, i reported countless time, nothing changed. Moved to one gen2 to other gen 2 server, i dont counting alredy how many time. All of that is a lot of trash.  UE 5 need better computer then UE 4.  Gen 2 needed a little bit stronger computer, then other maps, and they computer crashing.  Then what can i waiting with UE 5 servers? 24/24 offline?:D  And i dont sayed yet, to i cant see the point of it to buy. I restarting, playing until 1 or max 2 year, then ark 2 releasing, and UE 5 ark 1 servers again, shut down, and they speak to you. Sorry guys, but this will be better. Ark 2 will be better then ark 1. So buy again, and play again.  So no.  I love the ark. I will love forever, i will play in single blayer.  Good luck to WC.  Us I can see, many player will buy again, so everybody can learn from WC to how can we clever business.

Let me see if I can put this full price update in perspective for all the Ark fans out there. Ark survival evolved came orinn March 2015 (according to Wikipedia) give or take. Other popular games in 2015 were:

    Witcher 3

    COD: Black Ops III

    Fallout 4

    Halo 5

    Mortal Kombat X

    Final Fantasy XIV

    Assassin's Creed Syndicate

You REALLY havent kept upto date with the majority of feelings in the room have you?  its not that they are forcing us to buy another game (the same game with shiny bits) AND the DLC ... its the horrific WAY they have forced it upon us AND the overpriced cost of it all - AND after all this will they even maintain asa after (if it comes out) ark2 ??? this was THE final nail in the coffin of BS and lies that we have been fed for years from WC / Snail, its simply too much now for anyone that had a flicker of hope to carry on holding their torch with any confidence - ADD to the fact they ARE STILL SELLING arkse with NO WARNING of closure of official updates / servers its a helluvah shady practice.

I could go on but if this wasnt enough then there is no changing your perspective.

PS NON of these games are anything like ark in content / player progression.

Every game you listed as examples are sequels, ASA is nothing more than an expensive face lift.

    • I don't understand what kind of people are you? what are 5 euros per month? a maximum of 2 and then a lot, you yourself then estimate 5000 people for 2 evra is already 10000 evra, for such money you can rent so many servers and half will remain.. you impose problems on yourself for the future..

And this is your first post on the forums .... bot or REALLLLLLLLY naive i am not sure .... IF for ONE MINUTE you think WC can and will MEET ALL THEM DEADLINES AND 'NEW' UPGRADES then boy oh boy you are in for a HUGE SHOCK LOL not been cruel or disrespectful just letting you know WC has NEVER met one deadline / release date as yet since its release - let alone included ALL of the bells and whistles it is touting for the 'facelift' ....

It is also the entire principle and delivery of this information and hereafter lack of any response to the playerbase which has made us annoyed.

By the time Ark 2 gets released, Unreal Engine would be updated to version 6 lol.

As for Ark 1 remastered. I understand both sides of things. Will I get it? Nope, not until I see it's release version and see the reviews on it. I honestly do not trust Wild Card anymore. They do NOT have any good QA team, hell current Ark 1 is still bugged... for a PS5 user, Ark Ascendent, 40$ for Island, plus 20$ for the other ones, then another 20$ for the rest if not for all the other ones...

I feel cheated to some point, but I don't care anymore...

    Good luck, with respect.

    Regards,

    Moose

The best thing WC could do: EVERY ~2 years release FULL PAID beautiful (like im sure WC can do) DLC like Aberration or Extinction in UE5.

This could be best for us players and for their $$$ money.

FULL creative DLC BASED on ARK 1 included

    - new beautiful, polished map
    - new dinos
    - new original boss
    - new engrams
    - new story
    - new mechanics (just like Nemeless/Radiation/Reapers Queens in Aberration or Orbital Drops/Titans in Extinction)

And then do good stuff like:

    - Good community crunches
    - Dino TLC's
    - New creative events
    - code improvements

AND FORGET ABOUT ARK 2 - WE DONT NEED IT!
OR AT LEAST DO IT WITH US - Ask what we need it ark 2
We can help you make best game

Why is everyone scared of August?

Wildcard has never hit a release date with ark, ASA probably won't get launched until August 2024 or later and Ark 2 will be sometime in 2026 after the newest consoles launch.

Also why talk about boycotts.  The player base have defended every shady thing WC has done over the past 7 years.  ASA will sell like hotcakes.

Does anyone else think that the concept art is just unused originals from ASE.

If UE5 is the reason Ark 2 is being delayed because its such "new technology". Which, btw does not have that many breaking changed from UE4. Then why is it you can release the Ark 1 remaster in UE5 in only a few months... The remaster which was meant to be free originally?

Because all they have to do is put it into ue5 but ark 2 is completely new and will be entirely different
