  • Community Crunch 355: ARK Roadmap, EVO Event, and More!

     welcome_crunch2023-1.png

    Hey there Survivors!

We’re ready to reveal ARK's roadmap for the next year, covering various game-related initiatives, new platforms, and media.  The community’s support continues to be incredibly humbling and inspiring for the team, and that enthusiasm helps drive us toward creating the ultimate survival franchise. What we’ve planned has changed due to many shifting factors, but we believe it will ultimately provide the most fun and excitement for everyone who enjoys ARK.

We know you’re eager for the lowdown on our plans and more transparency regarding what’s behind the curtain, what’s evolved, and what has sprung anew, and we’re ready to share that with you… But before starting, we want you to meet our new friend!

    And now, for the roadmap…

    ark2heading.png

After careful consideration, we have decided to delay the sequel's launch to the end of 2024, when it will still launch exclusively on Xbox, Game Pass, and Windows distribution platforms (Steam/PC). We’ve put much thought into delaying ARK 2 for the betterment of the final product and the team's well-being. This news will be disappointing to many - we feel it too - but we’re confident this heavy decision is the right one.

So why the delay? Our goal is to make ARK 2 the best game it can be and provide a truly exceptional and rewarding experience for players. Unreal Engine 5 is incredibly new technology to us (and all developers), and we aim to use this cutting-edge tech to its fullest potential while creating a game with never-before-achieved scope at Studio Wildcard. As we learn more about the engine and develop the sequel, we have adapted our workflows and adjusted our pipelines to accommodate this new next-generation paradigm, and because of everything that involves, we need more time for development.

We sincerely apologize for this delay and genuinely appreciate your understanding. Your support and passion are vital to us, and we will continue to work intensively to deliver the ultimate next-gen dinosaur survival experience. With that in mind, we do not plan to showcase any gameplay/screenshots/videos of ARK 2 this year; however, we intend to keep you informed and engaged in the development process by regularly showcasing more ARK 2 assets in the months ahead, leading to our gameplay reveal next year.

But! Our desire to push the boundaries of what ARK 2 is on a next-generation platform has led us to the decision to create an intermediary Unreal Engine 5 ARK product utilizing some of the new technology we are building, allowing us to further our mastery of the new engine and ultimately battle-test some of our riskier technical advancements. We’ll gain a deep understanding of how well the rendering and lighting techniques work on console, what performance will be like, whether we can optimize and deliver interactive water and foliage on a widescale basis, and much more. We will deliver cross-platform modding, cross-platform multiplayer & a new account system, informing us about other changes we should consider for ARK 2. Due to the scope of all the technical and QOL changes required for such a next-gen experience, it is not feasible to make this new version of ARK backward compatible, which led us to conclude that this would need to be a separate product.

We also recognize that ARK 2 has some pretty significant design changes from the original game, which may not make it as appealing to everyone (looking at you, Souls-like combat, primitive-only weaponry, and strict third-person mechanics – and an overall “very serious” tone), which is why we feel it is essential to provide players with a fully next-gen version of the original experience to ensure that fans can continue to enjoy the ARK they know for years to come.

We’re thrilled to share this new ARK journey with you this year -- bringing players from PC, Xbox, and PlayStation together in a next-generation version of the game you love, topped off with revolutionary cross-platform modding.

ARK: Survival Ascended is a next-generation remaster of our beloved ARK: Survival Evolved, harnessing the power of Unreal Engine 5. It will be released on Xbox Series S/X, PC (Windows/Steam), and PlayStation 5 by the end of August 2023. The base game will include The Island, SOTF, and all the “Non-Canon” DLC maps (which will be added to ASA over time).

Xbox Series S/X and PC players will only be able to get it via an ultimate-value bundle known as the ARK Respawned Bundle. This bundle includes ownership of both ARK: Survival Ascended AND ARK 2 and will be priced at $49.99. This bundle will be available to purchase from the end of August for up to 1 year (after which ARK: Survival Ascended and ARK 2 will be sold separately). Additionally, the bundle will provide players access to an exclusive 1-month closed-beta to ARK 2 in 2024 before the rest of the general public can play ARK 2.

PlayStation 5 users will be able to get their hands on ARK: Survival Ascended as a standalone next-gen game at launch in August 2023 for $39.99.

All the expansion packs will be sold separately on all platforms:

    • $19.99 for Explorer’s Pass, which includes Scorched Earth, Aberration (Q4 2023), and Extinction (Q1 2024).
    • $19.99 for Genesis Pass, which includes Genesis Part 1 (Q1 2024) and Genesis Part 2 (Q2 2024).

At ARK: Survival Ascended’s launch, players will have access to The Island, Scorched Earth, and the new revamped game mode, Survival of the Fittest.

In addition to many other new features, ARK: Survival Ascended will feature the following improvements and enhancements:

    • Unreal Engine 5 Overhaul with Nanite, Lumen and RTXDI
    • Dynamic Water
    • Interactive Foliage
    • Unreal Engine 5 performance gains: instanced-rendering (large-bases etc.), threaded server networking, and native physics engine
    • Cross-platform Multiplayer
      • This includes cross-platform accounts and cross-progression, cross-voice chat & friends, etc. No matter what platform you start playing on, you can access your account, character, dinos, and items on a different platform for the ultimate cross-platform experience.
    • Cross-platform Modding
      • We recognize the power of giving players the tools and capability to define their survival experience, so we want to take cross-platform one step further by working with  Overwolf  to introduce an industry-first cross-platform modding experience where mods created on PC are delivered directly to end-users’ consoles from a custom modding backend.
      • The modding capability will include FULL blueprinting support ;), stacked mods, and maps. Everything that is currently possible on the Steam version of ARK: Survival Evolved and more will be possible on the new system and be available for end-users to play on consoles in all modes.
      • Premium Mods: Reviewed by Overwolf and Wildcard for quality control and value, Mod authors will optionally be able to specify price points for their Mods (with 50% of the price point going to the Mod author). This is necessary to pay for the custom infrastructure required for Overwolf to support, administrate, and deliver Mods to the console.
      • We plan on streamlining the process of upgrading legacy ARK: Survival Evolved mods to the next-generation platform. We plan to reach out to current/former sponsored modders in preparation for the launch of ASA with the tools they need to get their mods ready before the launch.
    • Cross-platform Anti-Cheat
    • Survival of the Fittest
      • SOTF will be integrated into the main product as a new fully-supported game mode. It will have a dedicated team that will continue to work on more gameplay changes, mechanical improvements, quality of life, maps, and balance adjustments. The initial mode will be revamped with an exclusive ARK: Survival Ascended update, including:
        • Upgraded to Unreal Engine 5 with complete cross-platform and cross-modding support (the SOTF UE5 source content will be released for modders to utilize as they wish within ASA)
        • Scorched Earth SOTF Map
        • Matchmaking queue
        • Character and Creature customization with cosmetics
        • Local Lobby where you can group up with your friends, configure the look of your survivor and dinos, and queue up for lobbies together
        • Lots of bug-fixes and balance and functionality improvements
    • Art Assets are being upgraded throughout the entire game
    • Newly-designed holiday events take advantage of the next-gen pipeline, released as mods, so they’re always available to play!
    • New content, QOL improvements, balance, and gameplay changes, including but not limited to:
      • Updated mini-map (pan, zoom, pings, etc – similar to the SOTF mini-map)
      • New structures (display cases, smaller TEK Teleporters) & building QOL improvements (snap fixes, increased foundation support, foundation height adjustments, and more)
      • Queueing System
      • New third-person camera (with the option to opt out)
      • Directional Sprinting and Walking
      • Ping system
      • Gamepad cursor
      • Chibi Slot and Skins Tab
      • Balance passes (e.g. Cave Entrances, MEKs, Aberration Creatures, more breedable creatures, etc)
      • …and more! (seriously, a lot more, this list isn’t exhaustive, but it’ll get super long if we list everything, and there’s more we’ll decide to do between now and launch too)

    LiveOperationssubheading.png

We understand there will be questions regarding LiveOps for the product, so we’ll review some key areas now.

    • Final Content Update: In June for ARK’s 8th Anniversary, we’ll release ARK: Survival Evolved’s final content update, which includes the fan-voted Rhyniognatha!
    • Cross-platform: It’s important to note that ARK: Survival Evolved (ARK:SE) and ARK: Survival Ascended (ASA) will coexist but will not support crossplay between the two games. ASA will have undergone profound functional changes which prevent it from being compatible with the previous game.
    • Holiday Events: We plan to develop and release ASA-exclusive holiday content that takes advantage of the next-gen pipeline released in mods, so they’re always available to play!
    • Official Servers: With the launch of ASA at the end of August, we will be taking down all Official Servers on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC for ARK: Survival Evolved – at that time, the final save-datas from the ARK: Survival Evolved Official Servers will be uploaded for players to re-host on their own servers or play in singleplayer/non-dedi, as well as slightly earlier snapshots. You will still be able to play on single-player, non-dedicated, player-dedicated, and unofficial servers. ARK: Survival Ascended will have its own fully supported Official Network for all platforms.
    • Feature Sunset: With the launch of ASA, we will be ending official support for Primitive+, Split Screen, and Procedurally Generated Maps. These aspects of the game will not be ported to the new Unreal Engine 5 version.
    • We will look into releasing the source files for Primitive+ for those that wish to repurpose aspects of it for mods.
    • ARK: Survival Ascended Updates: The remaster will have regular updates to resolve bugs, introduce new content, balance changes, and quality-of-life improvements for years to come.
    • ARK: Survival Evolved Updates: will be limited to crashes and critical bug fixes.

    paidexpansionheading.png

We plan to release a new canonical-story expansion pack for ARK: Survival Ascended that will be available in Q4 2023. This DLC will feature four new creatures, which we’ll share more details about later this year!

    ARK_Ultimate_Bundle_2560x1440_V05.jpg

ARK: Ultimate Survivor Edition has been off to a great start on Nintendo Switch. The insightful crew at Digital Foundry called it "one of the most radical improvements in game quality (they've) ever seen."

So far, we've launched Scorched Earth, Aberration, and Ragnarok, with Extinction coming on April 11th. Our current estimated timeline for the rest of our significant releases is as follows:

    • April 2023 - Extinction
    • May 2023 - Small Tribes servers
    • June 2023 - Genesis Part 1
    • October 2023 - Genesis Part 2
    • Winter 2023 into 2024 - Remaining community maps

Spring has been an exciting time on the platform, with the release of the Carcharodontosaurus now roaming around The Island and Ragnarok. Eggcellent Adventure begins on April 3rd, bringing this full event to players on Nintendo Switch for the first time. Lest we forget ARK: Dinosaur Discovery, which also saw a content update to v1.5, recently adding a full-featured in-game map and numerous gameplay improvements. As a reminder, ARK: Dinosaur Discovery is a separate download available for FREE to all digital owners of ARK on Nintendo Switch.

Finally, we are happy to welcome a swath of new players from Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan & South Korea. Both titles are now available locally on Nintendo Switch in those regions from our partners at Spike Chunsoft.

    arkmobilerevamp.png

We have some important news for Mobile Survivors! At the year's end, we anticipate a relaunch of ARK: Mobile as a completely revamped product. It will be based on a graphically improved version of the Switch codebase due to the increased power generally available with mobile devices and include new Switch features and content and mobile-specific changes. We plan to release all the expansion packs and non-cannon maps over time into this revamped version, and from that point onwards, ARK: Mobile will have its product lifecycle and roadmap.

ARK: The Animated Series has completed the animation and cast recordings of all its 14 initial episodes, which are currently in post-production (VFX, sound mix, etc.). We're delighted with how the show turned out -- it's an epic melodramatic love letter to dinosaurs, fantasy/sci-fi, and of course ARK itself -- though we have not placed it yet with any platform, hence the lack of news in that area. So as soon as there's more to report, we will let you know!

Thank you everyone for reading through this substantial write-up, and stay tuned for more information on the ARK: Survival Ascended in the months ahead toward its August launch!

Because its illogical to assume that they would keep them up forever.

Maybe developers can give us some option for example:

    1. create new official premium paid servers connected to free official cluster
    2. set up good affordable price for it - better than typical Nitrado, because of mass customers discount
    3. make premium paid server much more stable
    4. make special "exodus" engram - kind of transfer storage box with unlimited weight and storage space - that will help to carry stuff from free to paid servers in more convenient way that dumb transmitter transfers
    5. wipe out free servers whenever they want to

But it need some effort and to have good will.

I browsed a bit to get some info on UE5 and to my understanding the engine was created specifically to allow UE4 games to be ported over to UE5. In other words UE5 can effectively re-create the results of UE4 without all the bells and whistles of course.  Just like Fortnite UE5 runs on PS4/Xbox atm. To me it seems possible the upgrade could have been done on those systems keeping player progression etc. Couple that with shutting down the official servers on day 1 of ASA (when the last paid for DLC was 2yrs ago and normally most games keep these running for 5-8yrs after that point) it's undoubtedly a  way to force players into a brand new full price purchase and an anti-consumer tactic to simply re-package the game, re-title it as a new game to justify a full price in place of Ark2.

Lastly, as you're still selling ARK1, have you changed the description to reflect that service is being removed in a few months? Or people who are just buying it and trying it out will come to find out in 5 months that service disappears? Even though I'm not using public servers and will not be affected, I still think this move is a bad one and if you just sit back and not protest, it opens the door to more anti-consumer moves being made with impunity.

At the very least, if you worry that Ark2 will not have anywhere near the success and appeal as Ark1, you could have done the Free basic upgrade and then turn it into a live service game running along side (releasing new paid for DLCs/skins etc) with potential crossover of assets etc since the engine will be the same without going down this greediest route.

Anyways...it's just a game, so although I can't be upset about a game, the mentality I see does bug me though.

yes unreal engine project always allowed to be port-forwarded. Of course some versions passages (like 4.5 to 4.6) are less time and resource demanding than others (4.26/4.27 to 5.0). Code must be refactored and sometimes changed to handle some deep changes but not rewritten all from 0. Models have to be recooked as well (that was expected from begin, current PC ARK version uses 4.2 still 4.2 model file-format), same as effects.

if they cared so much about server prices they would have done something already, like shut down all legacy, close very-very-low/really unpopulated servers, tweaking server settings to allow more people playing (eg: make those 70 slot really work for real). Nothing of this has being done since 2019 where some legacy (mostly pvp) have been shut down.

You guys are seriously screwing everyone and it's Insulting that you think a graphics engine change should equate to everyone buying the entire game again. Good luck with that. You are going to lose a butt load of the community and money. Not to mention that you are totally screwing the PS4 users who won't even be able to play official on Ark 1, but also won't be able to play Ark 2.

You're right, I don't know exact percentage of people playing with Epic Settings. However, I know that many players deliberately turn off the bells and whistles to Low Details to have a faster and more visible game (the vast majority of PVP players do this).  It's just that for many players, the graphical change doesn't matter much.

The case of the mysterious DLC, which would be created this year, is different. I'd gladly spend a few bucks on that. However, I think that such a general statement is intended to confuse our minds. Just another unclear promise we should not trust.

If this isn't clear @StudioWildcard you just lost the community support indefinitely unless you find a way to change all what you announced. And just to be clear: ARK2 delay is the last of the issues.

I feel like the smart decision would have been to push back ark 2 and start monetizing ark on console and pc or just release more paid dlc AFTER the FREE ue5 update. Sell skins ffs.

Sorry WC and Snail Games you don't get to all of the sudden have it purely your way just for profit. I was okay with the delay from Q4 2022 until Q2 or Q3 of 2023. The delay, from what was somewhat hinted of Q2 or Q3 2023 until Q4 of 2024 is disappointing, but at the end of the day most of us can stomach that because we have sympathy for the devs and their well being AND we all want the best possible version of that game on release, within reason. However turning this layover into a cash grab and the structure of your incremental monetization is beyond greedy. You can blame it on the economy all you want but in this economy, most everyone of us is suffering not just you as part of the global 2%.

TBH the delays have only allowed me more time to research Snail Games and from what I've learned about the owners this move is less about the economy and more about forcing players to into some pay to play system that the true owner of the brand has always wanted. The expansion of the brand into an animated series is cool to think about as a fan and even more enticing because you brought some big names on board, but your latest roadmap has revealed your true glass-transparent intentions.

Personally, as a player of 6 years and someone who was stoked about UE5 Ark and Ark 2 I'm done with you and the brand. Making rash decisions is not in my nature, but understand the bigger picture and your true intentions are clear in my mind. Bait and switch. Take the whole thing and peddle it to someone more gullible.

There's a reason why games like SWG in the past had so much momentum and then completely failed and those reasons are the same with what you did here. Not respecting your player base and staying true to your word will turn off dedicated fans which is a horrible idea because they can be your best advocates at the end of the day and best form of advertisement. I'll forget about this brand soon enough, but not until my personal word of mouth and keys is spread to every gamer I've been associated with over the past 6 years.

Event if i had 1 000 000 € in my account, I dont buy on principle anyway...

I browsed a bit to get some info on UE5 and to my understanding the engine was created specifically to allow UE4 games to be ported over to UE5

It's also not that simple. More than half of Ark is custom C++ code. It's not just using the UE4 framework. So I direct simple port like you are suggesting isn't on the table.

Greedy Weasels! Wildcard always tells you 1 thing then goes and does another!! Ark 2 imo probably wont be out till 2025 or worse will never come out, but that may be a good thing since it will NOT be "ARK". Dark souls like? Lmfao, i hated dark souls played 5 min then never returned!! 3rd person only? Lmfao ya no thx. Just gave all my stuff away in ARK survival evolved! You lost a loyal player that will NOT be scammed into paying for ARK a 2nd time!

Well done Wildcard.  Ignore the haters.  This is a 10/10 move.  Remaster with new content and features?  YES PLEASE!  Of course it's going to cost money.  Myself and most of the community will be glad to pay for the product.  WOW players pay up to $180 a year just to play.  $50 + DLC costs is nothing.  Let's goooo!!!!

Most of the community? You should try reading the posts made by the community, hell even people who usually defend WC are calling out their crap with this one.

That's a fan page. Has nothing to do with the company.  Nothing about that is official. It's just some dude on Twitter.

My anger got the better of me there & I'll admit I missed that. Thank you for correcting that for me.

I do still stand by my not a joke statement though. We've had nothing but radio silence from them, if it was a april 1st joke they should've said something by now.

Working so much on band-aid fixes/workarounds and avoiding updating the game engine to newest version UE4 in Early Access sent its regards at last.

I haven't logged it to this website for a few years after Wildcard disappointed me severely in Early Access, I guess some things never change.

What annoys me the most about this:
Wildcard: "We have to delay ARK 2 to Q4 2024, we don't have anything to show you yet."
Also Wildcard: "ARK remsatered will be released in just 4 months! Trust us, "we are engineers", Oh! Also rebuy all your DLCs you already paid for! :3 But it's more! You preorder game that does not exist yet!"

ARK 2 does not have playable build after 2 years of development, only concept art that don't mean anything in a long run (they can be changed or thrown away). So why should we trust that remaster wouldn't be as buggy mess as ATLAS was.
They think they can take us for granted again and again...

My friends who played ARK more than me are beyond disgusted by this announcement and swore they would not play ARK 2 nor the remaster.

I just registered only to write this comment.
I played ark on PS4 and bought all DLCs. Then, since the only next gen console version came for xbox series X, I bought the game and all DLCs AGAIN on that platform. Then, since you announced the unreal engine 5 version was coming for free, I bought Ark and all DLCs AGAIN for my steam deck, because I wanted to support you guys and despite all the bugs never fixed, I enjoyed the game.
Now I am so disappointed ASA and all expansions are meant to be bought again I can't even find the words to express how sad this is. Totally disrespectful towards your comunity. I disinstalled Ark on every platform I had it on and I'm never going back to play it again, ever!
I feel like I have been scammed.
Goodbye forever from a useless ex fan of yours. But we all know you don't care at all.

What happen to unreal 5 upgrade being free?  Now we have to pay to play the new unreal 5 version.  I don’t complain ever here but I don’t mind the changes they seem to be for the best of the game…but telling us it will be free then charging us for it isn’t cool at all

Aye. The main reason I was turned-off by the game. The devs didn't work on core gameplay mechanics of ARK during Early Access so fundations were solid as much as throwing extra dinosaur in it. Now, the game pays the price.

I don't tackle all of your points because you're posting walls of text whereas I being the criminally lazy goon I am prefer quick and concise points focused on the things I pipe up on unless something really vexes me into dragging it out. I skim for the points of interest and generally disregard everything else unless explicitly necessary to address. Some people will quit and likely move to unofficial or simply drop the game but not all of them will. If even one person stays put then it's still a net positive, if the people that choose to quit miss the window for a refund then why should wildcard care? They have your money, they clearly don't care about proper server maintenance, consumer satisfaction, or bugs so why should they care about a low player count? The Timmy point doesn't show anything about my mentality, it's to highlight the issue that while some are getting up to speed with beginner basics the alphas will already be halfway through the metal era. The funny thing in all this is I don't even play official, I run my own unofficial server cluster. I just really dislike the idea of people losing their work and being told to double dip into their wallets to get the dubious privilege of doing it all again from zero. It's nothing like building up a base and having an alpha steamroll it since you can at least attempt to fight back and walk away knowing you tried, it's more akin to watching a meteor the size of New Mexico barreling at you and knowing you can do nothing. The thought of it disgusts me.

We actually agree on more than we both realise :) /\

Hope Jeremy is not a liar and he really wanted UE 5 upgrade to be free but Snail Games forced Wildcard to make it as paid DLC instead. Snail Games cares only about money so maybe they forced Wildcard to choose - ARK upgrade as paid DLC and paid expansions or NFT poop in ARK 2. If so, Wildcard just chose lesser evil. But it's still sad that Wildcard broke promise of ARK upgrade to be free for all ARK: Survival Evolved owners. They should make promises only if they are 100% sure that they can keep their word. It wasn't their first time.

You guys are seriously screwing everyone and it's Insulting that you think a graphics engine change should equate to everyone buying the entire game again. Good luck with that. You are going to lose a butt load of the community and money. Not to mention that you are totally screwing the PS4 users who won't even be able to play official on Ark 1, but also won't be able to play Ark 2.

excuse my novel im writing..i agree, the thing about that is that now we all get punished, even though us people buying the game pays them to maintain it and uphold it (as well as all the donations and fundraising they did), they are forcing us all to buy it all again? yeah no happening. you want to have everyone start over and be whipped because you couldn't figure out how to fix the servers and the running process YEARS AGO WHEN THE PROBLEMS BEGAN. us ark players begged and begged for you guys (wildcard) to fix the issues yet you never did but just kept laying on more and more stuff to glitch the servers out. "hey let's spray this pile of poop with perfume, that should fix it right?" so you going to let people to continue to buy the DLCs still for the same price? i hope not cause they are on a time crunch for the end.. some people just started and bought all the stuff for the game to not even get to complete it, i don't think that is fair to them tbh. yeah won't be buying the not so FREE ark again, yall got my money and yet gonna whipe all my stuff and then expect us people who have been playing for years to just start over. should have just started a different platform completly cause clearly this one isn't the best, nah.
